Open Gardens Tomorrow

Where am I? What am I?

On Sunday at the Open Gardens (2-6pm), see if you can see this little fellow.  He really is quite obvious in one of the gardens.

Parwich Bowls Club

Week commencing 14 June 2010.
Oh dear. Two away matches, two defeats. At least the sun was shining both days!

Tuesday League – Away – Buxton Park.
As mentioned last week it was just as well we had had a good win. Buxton are top of our league and their green is very ‘tricky’ indeed.  Last week we won and our opponents got 59 points. This week the scores were reversed. We lost 59 to 81.  The score was not as bad as we had anticipated though. We are half way through the season (can’t believe it) so the fixtures are reversed. Let us hope we can get a few points back at home next week.
Next match – Home – Buxton Park B – 22 June 6.30

Thursday League – Away – Tideswell.
Again this is a really lovely venue and although we lost it was a gorgeous sunny day.  We lost the doubles games 2 to 1, but won the singles 4 to 2. This gave a aggregate score of 132 to 121.  At the start of play we were fifth in the league so hopefully with this reasonable away score we will stay in that position. All will be revealed in the fullness of time.
Next match – Away – Wirksworth – 24 June. 1.30 ish.

The friendly against Ellastone was marred by the rain, but the food was great!  No matches this weekend as it is all hands to the pump for ‘Open Gardens’.  It’s still not too late for baking scones for the cream teas!

Bikers having fun

On Wednesday, this group of bikers were enjoying the sights of Parwich and were photographed by JF-S, a former biker himself.

Final Photo Diary

The Memorial Hall has now been handed over to the committee, and as with any new development there are of course a number of  issues that still have to be sorted.  This period of time is called snagging in the trade and has been going on throughout this week.

To update you on the hole in the car park, the leak in the heating system is sorted, and the complete commission of this will take place on Monday.  There will be a complete new car park relaid shortly.

The landscaping that was featured in an earlier photo diary was halted, as the committee are not happy with the quality of the soil, plants and planting by the contractors.  This issue is being pursued by the committee in conjunction with Peak Park.

The photo below shows the rear with the newly seeded grass crete, by the Legion.  This section will be taped off for the next few weeks to allow the grass seed to grow.

The photos below show where we were at the beginning of October, through the exceptionally snowy winter to today.

A message from Andrew and Rachel

Thankyou so much for all your cards, messages, phone calls, visits and offers of practical help. We have been overwhelmed by all your expressions of love and support, and they have been a great comfort to Andrew, and me.

What a wonderful village we live in, Parwich is a very special place and you are all very special people. Thankyou, thankyou for your friendship and for helping Andrew through this very difficult time. He has had his first ten days of chemotherapy, with all its side effects, but he is gradually starting to eat again and to feel a little better. It lifts his spirits every day when I take him your cards and messages, and share the life of the village with him. All being well, he will be allowed out of hospital for a week or so before starting the second month of chemotherapy, possibly next week.

We send you all our love and so many thanks. Rachel.

One of our readers has suggested that we start up a new section on this site, dedicated to car-sharing requests.

So, for example, if someone is going to Derby, Ashbourne, Bakewell, Matlock – or even further afield – they could post the information here, along with a phone number or other contact details.

This would also work the other way, so that anyone needing a lift could also post a request. Requests could also be posted on behalf of friends, neighbours and relatives who do not have internet access.

Examples:

  • Spaces available in car going to Ashbourne at 10:00am on Friday 25th June – John, tel. xxx
  • Lift wanted from Derby station at 6:00pm on Thursday 24th June – Mary, tel. xxx

As for sharing of any petrol costs, this would be left to the discretion of the drivers and passengers.

Our reader says:

This would be ecologically and environmentally sound, cheaper for some, companiable for others and convenient for all.

The blog team are more than happy to trial such a service – but before we make a start, we’d like to know whether or not you would find it useful.

Please let us know what you think by completing our poll.
Note that you can tick more than one option.

If you would NOT find the service useful, please tick the last option only. In this instance, the “negative” votes are just as helpful to us as the “positive” votes, so please don’t hesitate to answer honestly!

1) Committee and Sub-groups – your volunteer teams have yet again shown fantastic commitment through their time given to fund raising and ensuring good detail design and quality in the build.

2)  Day-to-day running of Hall

  • Cinema – continued success using the Church, with thanks to them for allowing this to continue.
  • Insurances for new Hall now in place so Hall and Committee members are suitably protected
  • Bookings’ Secretary is again taking bookings and reports that there has been a good level of interest for when the Hall is finished.
  • Stepping Stones will finish their term at Bradbourne, to give them time to move all their equipment back in the summer holiday for a September start in Parwich.
  • Booking rates have increased as reported last year – local rates have increased by £1 or £2, non-local have increased by £5 & a new commercial rate has been introduced. Continue Reading »

The next meeting takes place in the Memorial Hall from 7.30pm to 9pm on Thursday June 17th. Here is the agenda.

Missing Crockery

We seem to be missing some cups and saucers and pudding dishes from the village hall. If anyone has them or knows their whereabouts could you please let me know

On page 13 of this week’s Ashbourne News Telegraph, there’s a splendid half-page advertisement feature dedicated to this weekend’s Parwich Open Gardens, and to the Wakes Week activities which commence at the end of the month. Containing a full preview of the forthcoming activities, and accompanied by quotes from various Parwichians, it’s well worth reading. Copies are available from the shop, or you can read the e-edition by following this link.

Hole in the new car park.

In case anyone is wondering why there is suddenly a hole in the new Memorial Hall car park, it appears that pressure to the heating system had dropped, and engineers from Eco vision have traced it to a possible leak to one of the bore holes.

More tests are to be carried out, but meanwhile the system will still work on three bore holes.

Bugged by Unwanted Calls?‏

Our thanks go to Keith Parsons for submitting this post:

I don’t know about anyone else in Parwich, but personally I get at least one unwanted marketing telephone call every day.

I don’t like being rude to these people who have a sad job making cold calls for a living.

They probably get lots of abuse and phones slammed down in the middle of their pitch. Not a fun way to earn a living.

But I also don’t want to receive their nuisance calls.

Did you know there is help at hand?

The Telephone Preference Service is free and allows you to opt out of receiving unsolicited sales or marketing calls.

Its quick and easy to register your phone number. You can find all the details on www.tpsonline.org.uk

I registered my phone number today, but have yet to find how effective it is.

Late night crash

We understand that a single vehicle was involved in a collision with a wall in the centre of the village last night.

Our particular commiserations to the owner of the wall as she has only just got rid of the builders who had been working on the property almost continuously since the flooding and as this is the second time recently the wall has been hit.

The Police have passed their file on the death of Lionel Webster on to the Coroner’s Court.  Though arrests were previously made, the Crown Prosecution Service have decided that no prosecutions should be made.  The inquest hearing will take place in the next month or so.

Lionel Webster was brought up in Parwich, and always had a friendly word for customers in his jeweller’s shop in Ashbourne Market Place.

Best win of the Season

PARWICH BOWLS CLUB – Week commencing 7 June 2010.

We came so close to winning both of our matches this week. However, we did have the best result in one league.

Tuesday League – Home – Bakewell.

  • Our best win of the year so far. Everybody played really well and following on from last week we missed getting a maximum score by one point.
  • We won by 83 to 59.

Hopefully when the league results for all teams are in we may move up a place in the league.  Our next match is against the team who are top of the league, so perhaps it’s just as well we have had a couple of good wins.

Next match – Away – Buxton Park B – 15 June 6.30

Thursday League – Home – Matlock Golf Club.

  • We only have 14 regular players and today we managed to put out a team where 12 people all played a game. This meant that 6 people played in the doubles and 6 in the singles.
  • It was a very close match indeed and we lost by the closest of margins 118 to 119.
  • The Golf Club were one point behind us in the league and although our points totals will now be the same they have a better points ‘against’ tally so they will overtake us in the league.

Next match – Away – Tideswell – 17 June. 1.30 ish.

We are all going to have a friendly game at Ellastone Bowls Club on Sunday. These matches are really enjoyable, and the tea provided is usually very tasty!

First Night in the New Hall

Thank you to Patti B for this report on how the first meeting in the new Memorial went:

Well, the AGM last night gave many of us the first opportunity to see the new hall. The overwhelming feeling and comments from those attending were ones of sheer pleasure with the hall and all its details.

‘Amazing’, ’beautiful’,’ I never expected it to have all this’,’ we must have the best village hall in England’ were just a few of the comments.

People wandered around examining everything from the ‘state of the art’ kitchen to the toilets – six in total complete with a baby changing station.. There were many comments about the feeling of space in the lobby, ‘dramatic’ was a word heard more than once. The lobby, with its natural limestone floor, forms a natural centre with the hall, toilets, meeting room and kitchen leading from it.

The hall has a beautiful oak floor and is light, airy and luxurious. The high ceiling is lined with acoustic panelling and lit with bright, practical pendant lights. People commented on the quality and attention to detail.

‘I never expected such a high quality interior’ was one remark.

There are also wall lights for background lighting for entertainments. We were able to try the new chairs, which were very comfortable –no need to bring a cushion now and they can all be stacked on a trolley and wheeled away to a storage room when not needed. The new tables, which can also be locked together to form a stage, were also in use for the first time

The electric blackout blinds and high window openers in the meeting room were definitely a bit ‘toys for the boys’ with several men needing to satisfy their button pressing manias.

The totally stainless steel kitchen is large, impressive and professional with an extensive range of appliances such as a fridge, freezer, range cooker, dishwasher and warming ovens. One village resident was totally overwhelmed and said she wished it were hers.

The meeting room, which interconnects to the main hall, has folding glazed oak doors leading to the outside terrace. It is a more intimate room with a carpeted floor, which will have many future uses.

We were not able to go outside because work is still in progress but we could see the outside paving and landscaping and there was already talk of getting a barbecue to go out on the terrace.

It was evident from all the very positive responses that Parwich and its surrounding villages now have a new village hall to be proud of.

On Saturday, it is bulk rubbish morning for Alsop & Eaton.

Week 37 – Photo Diary

Tonight’s AGM will be the first meeting in the new Hall, so it is an opportunity to see inside.  The lobby, the hall itself and the toilets are all that can be seen this evening.

The Hall Memorial can be booked through Janet at the Sycamore Inn (tel. 390 212), though there may be changes on the Committee following this evening’s meeting.
