Update for Bradbourne & Parwich Heating Oil Club


The Ukraine crisis pushed Brent Crude over $105 a barrel on Thursday but has since fallen back to $97 a barrel. However, we have heard from several suppliers today that a lack of product at a number of terminals is pushing kerosene prices even higher in the UK. If you do not need to order fuel, you may wish to wait until oil prices and supply issues stabilise.
Estimated delivery times are 7 to 14 working days. Delivery times are an estimated delivery time. Please allow plenty of time for your order to be delivered and take into consideration that with the cold weather comes higher oil usage so please ensure you have allowed enough time for delivery. If you are low on heating oil and need a quick delivery, this group order will not be suitable.

TIP: Over time condensation and sludge naturally build up in your tank and can cause issues if sucked into your system. We recommend adding a bottle of additive to your oil to help break down any sludge and clear the injectors and pipes, and putting a water scavenger in every few months to absorb any water that has built up at the bottom of your tank.
Additives and water scavengers can be purchased from The Oil-Club Store. Please note, if you have an AGA then please ensure you order the cooker additive.

Help Needed

I wonder if you could help please? My parents, Gill and Peter Simpson are despairing about being let down time & time again by tradespeople. They have been promised people to come to put in a new radiator &, look at lights in their living  which have gone dim. Their summer house roof and felt has now blown off and requires repair. They also require help in the garden and for odd jobs.
I wonder if you could put a request for help with the above please but tradespeople need to be reliable and be able to do the job well!
I realise that many people are in this situation but they are becoming very anxious about this and are struggling especially with the light situation. I live up in Cumbria and have asked on Facebook for recommendations but have only managed to find substandard tradespeople.

Bins Update

This message received from Derbyshire Dales District Council-

While household waste and recycling collections currently remain a day later than usual this week due to Monday’s floods, Serco are catching up faster than expected with some garden, food and trade waste collections.

This means some garden, food and trade waste collections have happened on residents’ usual day today – we apologise on Serco’s behalf for the lack of communication on this.

However, Serco will go back for any garden waste and food collections missed yesterday and today if you were working to the revised day-late schedule and didn’t put your container out. Simply complete the missed bin form at www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/missedbin

The new message for the rest of this week is to leave garden and food waste containers out for collection *on your usual collection day*, but household waste and recycling collections will continue to be a day later than usual. Serco’s crews will work on Saturday to catch up.

Glow Worms!

Dear residents of Parwich.  I am after your help!

My name is Jim, a Derbyshire naturalist and former countryside warden.  For almost 20 years I have had a fascination with one of the UKs most enigmatic insect, the Common Glow-worm and most evening through June and July I am out searching the Derbyshire countryside to try to locate and record the species which is actually a type of beetle and not a worm at all.

Many people are totally unaware that Glow-worms (a close relative of Fireflies) even exist in Derbyshire or even the UK. They do and Derbyshire is quite a good place to find them, especially in the limestone areas of our county, where they may be found in many of the limestone dales.

Unfortunately, the number of populations of this species has declined over the past century through changes to land use, use of pesticides and increased levels of light pollution. Therefore I am trying to locate as many of our surviving Glow-worm populations as possible.

Over the last five or six years I have been trying to find new i.e. unrecorded populations as well as visiting sites with historical records, some dating back to the mid 1900’s. 

There are no records that I am aware of for the immediate area around Parwich. The nearest populations being in Ballidon Dale where I saw them in 2018 and on private land a little farther east towards Brassington.  There is also an old record for the Tissington Trail near Newton Grange. 

It is possible that Glow-worms do exists around Parwich village and some of you may be aware of them, or have seen them there in the past, perhaps lighting your way home with their yellow bioluminescent glows, down one of the lanes on a summer evening.

Glow-worms are usually found on unimproved pastures & meadows especially steep banks or dale sides, where they feed upon slugs and snails.

I’d be grateful if anyone who may know of the whereabouts of any Glow-worms, even memories of seeing them decades ago around Parwich (or indeed anywhere else in the county) could let me know via my email address

More information about Glow-worms can be found on the UK Glow-worm Survey website (www.glowworms.org.uk ) that Glow-worm enthusiast Robin Scagell has run for almost 30 years.  I now assist Robin with the survey as well as conducting my own searches in Derbyshire.

Bin Collection One Day Late

All bin collections will be one day later than usual for the remainder of this week due to rounds being cancelled today because of widespread flooding across the Dales.

It means collections that were scheduled for today will now happen tomorrow, and Tuesday’s on Wednesday etc. Serco crews will be working on Saturday to complete the week’s rounds.

Housing Needs Survey

Housing need survey for Parwich, Ballidon, Bradbourne, Eaton & Alsop and Newton Grange

Local people with a connection to Parwich and the neighbouring parishes of Ballidon, Bradbourne, Eaton & Alsop and Newton Grange are being encouraged to take part in an online survey about their housing needs.

Derbyshire Dales District Council wants to hear from people who are living in accommodation that is unsuitable for them. For example this could be young people interested in setting up a home for the first time, families needing a bigger home, people struggling in high cost rented homes and older people who may have a need to downsize.

A District Council spokesperson said: “For many people, finding a home that is affordable in the Peak District can be a real challenge – and local shops and services, which help to keep our communities sustainable and vibrant, are put under pressure as the population changes.

“Our key corporate priorities include enabling new homes for local people and supporting the local economy – that’s why we are working in partnership with local parish councils and other community groups to deliver more housing.”

A postcard inviting residents to take part in the survey is being hand-delivered by local residents through every letterbox in Parwich, Ballidon, Bradbourne, Eaton and Alsop, Newton Grange.

The spokesperson added: “We have a strong track record of building small developments of sensitively planned affordable homes within the Peak District National Park. You can see recent examples in Bradwell, Youlgrave, Stoney Middleton, Elton, Calver and Bakewell. These are all occupied by people with a strong local connection to those villages and towns.

“We believe that there is a growing need to build affordable homes for local people in Parwich and the neighbouring parishes.

“However, before any options are considered, we need the community to help us identify what the housing need is. That’s why we’re calling on residents – or former residents with a strong local connection who have moved away and wish to return – to tell us about their housing issues.”

Road Closed Matlock Bath

Just in case anyone has to venture out :  I’ve heard that you cannot get to Matlock through Matlock Bath ( the road is closed between Cromford and the railway bridge going into Matlock) due to concerns about the wall retaining the river.  There is also flooding in Crown Square, the park and the A6 (The Arc leisure centre road).

Meeting of Parwich Parish Council

The next meeting of Parwich Parish Council will be held on Wednesday the 16th February at 7:30 pm in the Memorial Hall.

Parish Councils are no longer permitted to meet using video conferencing so this meeting must be held in person.

Risk management measures including sanitising and distancing will be in place. The number of attendees may not exceed 30. All attendees may be required to wear face masks (unless exempt).
