Panoramic Five: a route and some history
Posted in Events, History, Parwich Panoramic 5, Sport on Sunday August 4, 2013| Leave a Comment »
The Parwich Panoramic 5 fell race started in 2009. Initially set up as a fund raiser towards the redevelopment of the Memorial Hall, our village hall, it has become an annual fixture in the fell runner’s calendar.
Further down the post is an outline of the Senior Race route, and information on the history of what you might see when taking it at a more leisurely pace than the PP5 competitors do. Please walk the route and send in any photographs to parwich@hotmail.co.uk, as we hope eventually to produce a leaflet for both locals and visitors.
But first, here are the race results and photographs from previous years posted at parwich.org:

Council updates
Posted in About this site, Events, Local government, Services, Sport on Friday July 19, 2013| Leave a Comment »
We get a lot of information and press releases from the County and District Councils and the Peak Park Authority. Many are not of specific interest to our immediate area or are too general for parwich.org. However today there are few that may be of tangential interest to some of our readers, not enough to warrant separate posts, but perhaps worth a brief listing here:
- Tour de France visiting Derbyshire in 2014, though not near to us. Click here for more details.
- Serco agreed to pay £75,000 to cover costs incurred by Derbyshire Dales District Council in tackling a series of problems with the launch of a new waste and recycling service. The good news is the new contract is now working well and, in addition to saving Dales Council Tax payers £385,000 a year, has increased recycling rates to almost 50% – one of the best figures in Derbyshire. Click here for more details.
- Information on the County Council’s autumn term Adult Education courses are now available, click here for County-wide information. Also click here for details of the Adult Education Centres in Derbyshire Dales.
- Derbyshire Dales District Council urges local people of all ages to give new sports a try, as its Wirksworth Leisure Centre stages a free open day on Sunday 28 July.

11.00 am – The Campsite “Songs of Praise Service”.
This year’s service will be held on the Campsite on Parson’s Croft. It will be led again this year by Rev. Andy Larkin. It is a popular event which brings together villagers, visitors, and our camping friends from Notts DA. The Service is followed by an opportunity to sit and chat, with tea and coffee provided by the campers.
12.00 noon – Fun and Games with the Campers.
Tug o’War and Volleyball are regulars at this friendly (but fiercely contested) sporting extravaganza, before we move on to more unusual competitions to test the skills of the participants.
6.00 pm – Treasure Hunts around the Village.
Assemble on the Green for a 6.00 pm start (even if it rains – and it usually does!)
For many years Pippa Sillitoe set our Junior Treasure Hunt for the under 14s. Pippa has now left the village and this year the questions have been set by Sharon Rankin. The Village Treasure Hunt for the over 13s has been set by Val Stevenson and Fiona Hadfield.
8.00 pm – Wakes BBQ at the Legion.
A chance to mull over the questions and decide just where you went wrong!
Sausages & pork burgers provided by Paul Dickinson.

Tudor Fun Day
Posted in Events, History, Peak Park on Monday June 24, 2013| Leave a Comment »
Chance to step back to the time of Henry VIII
Families can step back from the 21st century to the time of Henry VIII by joining the Great Tudor Farming Day in the tranquil Dove Valley on Saturday July 6.The outdoor event, from 11am to 4.30pm at the Dove Valley Environmental Centre, Under Whitle Farm near Longnor, will take people back to 1537 to share the daily lives of the Horobin family.
Children can dress in Tudor outfits and try their skills at spinning, weaving, farming, gathering vegetables and herbs, cooking and making reed lights as our 16th century ancestors would have done. Families can watch a re-enactment of skulduggery at Upper Whitle Farm, meet a Tudor quack (doctor), discover how to research local history, write with a quill and learn the secrets of the Tudor landscape and wildlife.
Peak District National Park ranger Lynn Burrow, who helped organise the event, said: “We want to open up a different world and show people what life was like for a Peak District farming family during the time of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn.
“Children can become part of an oxen plough team, and everyone can try their hand at dry hedging, archaeological exploration and Tudor dancing.”
The event is co-ordinated by Elspeth Walker of the Dove Valley Environmental Centre and run mainly by volunteers. Although free, donations are invited to help cover costs.People should bring a packed lunch (drinks will be available), and clothing suitable for a day outdoors including wellies in case of wet ground.
The postcode for the Dove Valley Centre is SK17 0PR, or ordnance survey map reference SK107 305 (between Longnor and Sheen), tel: 01298 83282.
