New arrivals in Parwich…

Posted by Heather H:

No, sorry, not children this time; but puppies! Late last night, five puppies were born to Jill L’s Maisy. There are three girls and two boys, all black and with their eyes tight shut for ten days or so. We went to visit them earlier this evening, and found all of the puppies well…and cute of course. Maisy’s learning how to look after her pups and looks fine. Oh and please keep the newspapers coming!

I have spotted three stories with local links in the Ashbounrne News Telegraph this week.  The main one being an article on the closure of the Chapel several weeks ago.  Also our own Debbie Webster featured in an appeal for volunteers for Ashbourne Arts Festival (to find out more contact the Volunteer Centre).  Finally congratulations to Charles Bunting for his success in the Ashbourne Farmers’ Club judging of beef cattle last Friday.

As always let us know about anything I missed.

Five hours later: so far you have pointed out the following

  • A letter from Patriotic of Parwich p.12
  • Guided walks in Tissington, led by Sir Richard (10-30am Sat 31st May, 10-30am Sat 14th June and 6-30pm Tues 29th July) p.32
  • Planning Application for change of use of former Parwich Shop to domestic use, application no. NP/DDD/0408/0307 (any interested party comments must be in within 21 days) p.44
  • Ashbourne Town Darts, both the Legion and the Sycamore Teams will be playing in the Divisional Finals on Friday 30th May p.53

Community Pub of 2008?

The Sycamore Inn, Parwich has been nominated for the Great British Pub Arwards‘ “Best Community Pub 2008“. Well done the Brewery and Phyllis for putting our local forward.

We wish Janet and Steve all the best in this event, it is a prize they richly deserve: not only for all Janet’s hard work in providing a shop in the village at three weeks’ notice, in organising the bookings for the Memorial Hall and supporting lots of local groups, but also for providing a friendly relaxed pub where all can mix and chat.

Ashbourne Telegraph news drought

There is a drought of news from Parwich, Pikehall and Ballidin in this week’s stunner.  So far I have found only one mention of Parwich; well done Elizabeth Moorcroft for gaining a third prize in Ashbourne Farmers’ Club’s Intermediate Shorthorn Dairy Cows class at the new stock judging last Friday at Rough Grounds Farm, Cubley.

Alsop tried to make up for the rest of the villages but even then its news was a little out of date, over 60 years out of date.  The Memory Lane page has a very fine picture of Alsop Moor Quarry and the old lime kiln in the snow (where Rivendale Caravan Site is now), and some of William Bunting’s recollections of the winter of 1947.

Do let us know of any news that has been missed (new or old).

I was driving to work this morning, switched on the radio and was expecting to hear “Terry”, but no it was Ashbourne Radio.  This is our new local radio station due to be launched officially on 96.7FM from Monday 26th May at 10am.

The station is committed to providing a locally-focussed service which reflects the interests and concerns of the people of Ashbourne and Dovedale and the Staffordshire borders along with entertainment and information, 24 hours per day, 365 days per year.

Having just checked out email I would like to add a P.S. from Debbie Webster.

In the knowledge that there is going to be a lot of fundraising happening in Parwich over the next year, can I let it be known, via the website that Steve Jenner from Ashbourne Radio will be speaking in the Community Room at Shbourne Leisure Centre on Wendesday 14th May at 2pm.

There was an impressive turn-out at the Memorial Hall last night for the launch of Project Parwich.   Val Stevenson began the evening by giving a presentation on “The Journey So Far“.  After giving us some useful historical background on the rebuild project, Val went on to explain the committee’s strategy in more detail, and to give us some context for the approach that is being taken.  In particular, she stressed the importance of our needing to demonstrate that a new hall will offer the potential for increased usage, from a wider range of users.

Having already secured a development grant of £23,500, we are now four months away from our next deadline: the submission of our application for a grant of £500,000 from the Big Lottery Fund‘s Community Buildings Programme.  As applications for this programme are no longer being accepted, the message was clear: in terms of a full rebuild, it’s now or never.

If the grant application is successful – and we have every reason to feel confident that it will be – then a further £255,000 will still need to be sourced from elsewhere, in order for work to commence in Summer 2009.  Although the fund raising group (led by Brian Beasley) is working hard on this, there is still a role for the rest of the village to fulfil.  This was expanded on further by Patti Beasley, who explained the aims of Project Parwich.

As many of you will already know, Project Parwich is a twelve-month fund raising campaign by the village itself.  The idea is to raise as much money as possible, while having a good time in the process.  This will have the additional benefit of demonstrating that we are a self-organised community, who are taking an active and lively role in making the Memorial Hall project a successful one.

Last night’s suggested events included an auction of promises, a “millionaire’s night”, a 10k road run and a party/disco.  There will be many more to follow.  Ruby Hickmott is our official Events Organiser, who will be keeping a list of volunteers and putting together a calendar of events.  (You can e-mail Ruby, or phone her on 323.)  Everyone is encouraged to get involved, whether by planning their own event or by helping out at the many events that will be taking place between now and mid-2009.

The third and final speaker was Steve Riley from Marsh Grochowski Architects, who talked us through some of the current ideas for the new Memorial Hall.  Although Steve was keen to stress that the building plans were still very much at a draft stage, he was able to give us a fairly detailed glimpse at the sort of building we might expect to see.   (more…)

This week’s Ashbourne News Telegraph has a very positive feature on PARWICH.ORG.  A half page spread under the title “Blog site keeps villagers updated“, it also has a picture of the site (showing our post ‘Peak Park confused about Memorial Hall‘).  The final sentence “… it should be a beacon for other villages contemplating a similar enterprise” is particularly heartening (especially as this has also been picked up elsewhere, see onlineFocus).  Although the text of this excellent article does not seem to be on their website, it draws on our press release posted on this site.

There are several other things in this issue that our browsers might like to read, including a feature on Tissington Well Dressings p 28 & 29, and an article on the QEGS students collecting their D of E Awards (p.17) with a couple of names most will recognise (congratulations to all, but especially to our own Catherine Bunting).  Also as Bill pointed out on this site, the Peak Park arrived at a ‘mutually acceptable alternative’ venue for the Church Cottage Planning Appeal Hearing on the 28th of May (my apologies for our previously incorrect date) by letting the appellants know it is to be at Aldern House through the pages of this week’s Ashbourne News Telegraph.

Parwich Methodist Chapel was closed on Sunday 4th May after 159 years of worship in the chapel building. The Ashbourne Superintendant Minister, the Rev’d Tim Morris, led the final service, emphasising that it was not a ‘wake’ but an opportunity for a new beginning. From now on chapel members will worship in St. Peter’s church. More details of the final service, and photos, can be seen here .

It is expected that the chapel building will be sold by auction, but details of this are not available at present.

Don’t forget this Sunday sees, after 159 years, the final service in Parwich Methodist Chapel

3-30pm Final Service & Chapel Anniversary
Parwich Methodist Chapel
followed by refreshments in the Memorial Hall

Although this is a sad occasion, especially for those who have worshipped here all their lives, also remember and give thanks for all that have worked so hard to build and maintain the Methodist congregation in Parwich, which will continue beyond the closing of the building. The building, though we do not yet know what it will become, will remain as a permanent memorial to the hard work and community spirit of the people of Parwich.

Carolyn’s Corner (No 5)

The latest update on Carolyn…..

Carolyn is still make good progress and her therapists are “very pleased” with her overall progress; however there is still no news on how long it will be before Carolyn can come home.

On a more positive note, Carolyn’s been out and about again – this time to the Westfield shopping centre for lunch. She has also regained a little more independence this week. She has been given an electronic wheelchair so she can now move herself around the hospital as she wishes. Although she had one attempt at running Howard over in the corridor, she’s now in full control!

Howard took in the CD with everyone’s recorded messages on this week, which resulted in laughter and a few tears. Howard tells me the messages were great, very genuine and they made Carolyn’s day. Howard has also made up an album of all the photos that have been sent. Please keep sending photos and if the opportunity to record messages comes up again please have ago. The photos, cards, messages and pictures are all really helping Carolyn’s progress and they have the added advantages of brightening up her day and helping her to still feel part of the village.

There is a bit of an update as relates to visitors. Non-family members will now be able to visit but this needs to be carefully organised to fit in with her family and to make sure we don’t “double up” and wear her out. I know lots of us would like to see her as soon as possible but since she will be in hospital for a while it would make sense to spread our visits out. If you would like to visit please leave a comment here, call Howard, or put a note through the door. If you’re not able to do this, please email the website with a message and we’ll pass it on. If you do get to visit Carolyn it worth knowing that even though the visiting hours are quite restricted (2-4pm and 6-8pm) it’s not unusual for her to receive treatment during visiting hours. Clearly it’s important that she receives her treatment and so, if you’re visiting and she needs to go for treatment, please be patient.

Once more, Howard has asked me to say thank you and let everyone know how much he and Carolyn appreciate what has been and is being done for them both.

In the papers 30th April 2008

I have spotted two articles this week’s Ashbourne News Telegraph relating to our area, as well as the darts report, but do let us know if there are more. Firstly there is a report on the planning decision by the Peak Park Authority to reject the application for an extension to Station Road Farm. The article focuses on the placing of planning policy above individual circumstance, though it does not mention that the Committee had the discretion to allow such an extension if they saw fit, and that it was a close fought decision. Also it describes the building as a cottage, not mentioning that fact that it is the only remaining working small holding in the Parwich Conservation Area. (See also our report and the minutes of the Planning Committee of 18th April when they come on line).

Secondly congratulations are due to Ballidon’s Felicity Edmeston who is near to qualifying for the British Development Squad senior endurance team. There is a good photo in the paper of Felicity and her horse Floriferouz. “Following wins last year in 50-mile and 75-mile competitions she recently finished 11th in a 75-mile competition at Sangatte, France, and later this year will be facing her first 100-mile ride.” Felicity will be organising an endurance ride at Biggin on Saturday 17th May, with some nine classes, starting on Hartington Moor between 9 and 11am. All the best wishes for Felicity, especially as a recent accident to her horse has delayed Alice Beasley’s start to this year’s Dressage season.

Finally there was an article that attracted my attention, though not directly related to our villages (yet?), namely that Ashbourne Radio will appear on the airwaves at 96.7fm from Monday 26th May. (Their web address is http://www.ashbourneradio.co.uk/, though the site does not seem to be on-line yet.)

In the build up to the launch of Project Parwich we are starting our publicity.  This is our first press release on PARWICH.ORG: its remarkable success so far and the reasons behind setting it up.  If you have any suitable contacts that it should be forwarded to then please let us know.  It can also be downloaded in pdf format from http://www.parwichmemorialhall.org/publicity.htm

PARWICH.ORG
a community village website with a difference

Launched on March 16th 2008, PARWICH.ORG is a community website for the villages of Parwich, Alsop-en-le-Dale, Ballidon and Pikehall, in the Derbyshire Peak District. Unlike most village websites, which rely on traditional web page design to display static content, PARWICH.ORG uses blogging technology to create a lively, frequently updated weblog, with input from a broad cross-section of village residents.

To the delight of its creators, the blog proved an instant hit within the community, notching up an impressive 10,000 page views before the end of its first month. The site now averages 3,000 views per week: a remarkable achievement for an area with only around 500 people on its electoral roll. (more…)

This week’s Ashbourne News Telegraph reveals us to have one of the most dangerous stretches of road in the country for motorbikes:  “Figures released to coincide with a new campaign show that the short stretch of A515 between Ashbourne and Alsop-en-le-Dale has seen more bikers die or be injured than most other roads in the country.”  To find out more about the road safety campaign call Derbyshire County Council on 01629 058058.

A recent post here at PARWICH.ORG raised concerns that the new 50mph speed limit has made this road even more dangerous, so will we see the local section of the A515 moving up the league table to become the most dangerous stretch of road in the country?

Carolyn’s Corner (No. 4)

A further update on Carolyn…..

Carolyn has been in the rehab ward for over a week and the treatment she has received there has made a noticeable difference. She is making good and regular steps forward and Howard reports daily progress. In fact, Carolyn has really impressed the physiotherapist as she was able to stand for the first time yesterday, exceeding expectations!

Carolyn is now spending most of the day out of the bed in her chair and Howard and her family have been wheeling her around the hospital and its grounds. The hospital staff are even planning to take her on an outing to a local pub on Friday lunchtime! Howard has completed his “chair training” and is hoping to be able to take her out for the occasional meal soon. (more…)

The Planning Application for a rear extension to Station Road Farm house was rejected today by the Peak Park Authority’s Planning Committee. It was rejected by 5 votes to 4, with one abstention. Of the possible 19 Committee members some eleven, including the Chair, were present, meaning the rejection was carried by less than one third of the Committee.

The Committee were clearly split on the application with a motion to defer making a decision until after a site visit, only being rejected after the Chair used her casting vote. Some Committee members felt they could not make decision only on the basis of photographs, especially given the strong local support, including that of the Parish Council*, in favour of the application, however they were out voted. It should be noted that a member of the public present subsequently complained that the photographs and plans shown at the meeting were very difficult to see, and that they only told one side of the story. This had been raised by speakers in relation to other items on the agenda.

Two more articles in this week’s Stunner

Yet again there are two features on Parwich in the Ashbourne News Telegraph out today.  The main one is an article on the closure of Parwich Methodist Chapel, with the final service on the annual Chapel Anniversary, 3-30pm Sunday 4th May, followed by refreshments in the Memorial Hall.  The second is a short feature and photo of Parwich Lees Cottage in the property section, on the market with Boxall Brown & Jones.

There is also a feature on All Saints’ Church at Bradbourne, which is hosting an art exhibition along with its flower festival (Thursday 1st May to Monday 5th May), don’t forget you saw this here first.

Do let us know if I missed any other mentions (I did look for the Darts news but could not find it).

Tympanum Project

Work is progressing on a replica of the Tympanum.

This ancient carved stone is now above the west tower door of Parwich Church. Experts have dated the original variously between the seventh and twelfth centuries, though it most likely to have been carved in the early 1100s drawing on earlier Saxon and Celtic imagery. Since being placed in its current position in 1873 it has suffered considerable weathering. The replica is being made by the National Conservation Centre in Liverpool and here are a couple of photographs of the process forwarded to us by Jonathan Marshall:

Planning Information on-line

A big welcome to Emma on the blog team: she has lots of ideas on how to contribute to the site. One idea she has is a regular feature on planning issues. However with the following, I am perhaps being guilty here of stealing some of her thunder.

I noticed today that the Planning Officer’s report on the proposed extension to Station Road Farm has been posted on the Peak Park Authority’s website. This is to be considered at Friday’s meeting of the Planning Committee at Bakewell. The Parish Council have supported this application and there are some 31 letters of support from local residents, and no letters of objection.

The Officer’s Report makes interesting reading, as it is much more thorough than reports I have previously seen. The Planning Service is undoubtedly committed to fighting for refusal of the application. It is too late to add any further comments, though the Committee meeting is open to the public. I am sure the applicant and her family will welcome the support of friends and neighbours (in the real, not planner’s interpretation of the word) at what must be a stressful time.

Confusingly the Planning Officer raises the issue of building affordable housing; though do read the report as it may help the community in general to raise the profile of this with the Authority, after their previous resistance to the Nottingham Housing Association application for additional houses at Smithy Close and Rathbone Croft. Also the report is perhaps an indication of the role the Conservation Area Appraisal may play in future planning applications.

Carolyn’s Corner (No.3)

Thank you to Emma for sending this in.

A quick update on Carolyn…..
Carolyn is no longer on any medication and has been moved to a Rehab Ward (Ward 1), where she is best placed to receive the treatment she needs to recover.

Howard is reporting steady, daily, progress and improvements and he was most insistent that I pass on his thanks and appreciation to everyone who has sent cards and photos, made voice recordings and to all who’ve left comments on the previous postings. All of these things have been really useful in helping Carolyn’s day to day recovery.

A lot of us are keen to visit Carolyn; however, as much as she would love to see her friends, the hospital has asked that visits to be limited to family for the time being. The reason for this is that the hospital has advised that Carolyn still needs plenty of rest to make the quickest recovery possible. Similarly, there is still no news on how long it will be before we can have Carolyn back in the village, where she belongs! However, the reality is that she will probably be in hospital for many weeks. So, in the meantime any new comments, letters, photos and voice recordings would be welcome!

Howard checks the website regularly and takes all comments to read to Carolyn so this is a really good way to get messages to Carolyn (and Howard)! Don’t forgot there is still the Dictaphone in the shop/pub for anyone who wants to send a message in their in own voice – speaking to a machine can be a bit awkward and alien for some of us, but I know Carolyn would love to hear familiar voices so even a quick “hello” would be great.

There will be a further update next week………

First Kneeler Meeting

Thursday 24th April
10am at Dam Farm

As you will have read in an earlier blog Ambrose Wilton has left a generous sum of money to the Church and it was agreed that this should be put towards some kneelers in Church. Helen is hosting the initial meeting at her house, Dam Farm (near the Pond) so that we can all find out what we have to do. The kneelers are very straightforward to make, the pattern is printed onto the fabric and it is a very simple cross-stitch design. The stitch size is quite large, so having bad eyes is not a good enough excuse not to get involved.

Did you know that some of the best tapestry sewers are men – so Parwich males don’t be shy come along & join in as well.

In the papers again.

Updated: Sunday April 13th.

Parwich is in the Ashbourne News Telegraph again this week, featuring in three articles.

Note: the text of some articles in the Ashbourne News Telegraph is reproduced on their website. To look for them, select ‘Search News’ in the left hand column of their Home Page, and type ‘Parwich’ or similar into the search box.

The first article talks about the review of Parwich Conservation Area and the Peak Park Authority’s draft appraisal document.

Less positively, the second article reports on an act of vandalism towards a car parked in Parwich last Friday night (a week ago). The pieces stresses the potential risks of tampering with any motor vehicle. It is stated that this car has been targeted by vandals previously and PC Cooper requests anyone having seen anything to contact Derbyshire Police on 08451 233333 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Finally, there is a brief write-up of the darts match between Parwich Legion and Bradley House:

C Hampson with 10 registers, A Stevenson with a 95 finish and P Redfern had a 15 dart singles for Bradley House during their 6-3 against Parwich Legion. J Edge and J Hotchin won their singles and doubles for Parwich.

Residents of Parwich should have received notification today of the details of the review of the Conservation Area.

The Peak District National Park Authority’s draft appraisal of Parwich Conservation Area is now available on-line at http://www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/parwich-appraisal/. Copies are also available for public viewing at the Authority’s Offices at Aldern House in Bakewell, in the Sycamore Inn Parwich or through Parwich Parish Council.

The consultation period on this document runs from Monday 14th April to Friday 23rd May 2008. If you want to comment to the Peak Park Authority either email sue.adam@peakdistrict.gov.uk, or write to the Historic Buildings Team at the Peak District National Park Authority’s headquarters, or attend the public meeting at 4-00pm to 7-30pm on Tuesday 6th May in Parwich Memorial Hall. All comments must be sent in by 5-00pm on Friday 23rd May 2008. If you have any questions about this review phone the Historic Buildings Team on 01629 816200.

Parwich Village Action Group urges as many people as possible to look at the draft appraisal and to attend the public meeting. They also feel it is important for us all to share our views with each other, which you can do either by commenting here on PARWICH.ORG or by coming along to the informal Environment Group meeting at 8pm on Monday 21st April at the Sycamore Inn. It is vital that we are happy with the appraisal as we will have to live with its implementation over the next twenty or so years.

Here are some ways in which we can help Carolyn while she is in hospital.

1. Photographs.

We are planning to take photos of familiar people and places into hospital for Carolyn. This is partly to help her keep in touch, and also so that she can let all the numerous new people (nurses, therapists, etc) know something about herself.

If you have any images that you think would be useful, please e-mail them to parwich@hotmail.co.uk and we will forward them to Howard. (To avoid confusion, please mark them as “Photos for Carolyn”.)

Peter Trewhitt will also be in The Sycamore on Thursday evening with a camera, ready to photograph anyone who is willing.

2. Messages.

Do please continue leaving messages for Carolyn in the comments box (or e-mail them to us if you prefer). Howard can take them and read them to her, to help her recovery.

3. Sound Recordings.

There is also the opportunity to record short messages for Carolyn, until it is the right time for us all to visit in person. Mike Atkinson will then burn these to CD, so that Howard can play them to her in hospital. This will not only cheer her up and let her know that we are thinking of her, but it will also be another great way to assist her recovery.

If you would like to take part, then there will be a “recording session” at Creamery Cottage (Creamery Lane) between 2pm and 4pm on Saturday afternoon.

Alternatively, if you can’t make it on Saturday afternoon, then there will be a digital dictaphone behind the bar of The Sycamore, from Friday morning. These messages will also be burnt to CD.

Our thanks to Denis Laycock for providing us with this post.

Parwich Over Sixties began their new season of visits with a mystery trip. 37 members set off at 6 o’clock with our driver, as usual, keeping very quiet as to our destination.

We soon found ourselves up on the A515 and heading towards Buxton. We were rewarded with some excellent views across the Staffordshire Moorlands as the sun slowly sank in the skies: beautiful shades of green in the fading light.

From Buxton some of us were in ‘new territory’: the A5004 along Long Hill, overlooking the Goyt Valley and then via Kettleshulme to Macclesfield and eventually our destination, The Knot Inn at Rushton Spencer. Several of us had seen a number of hares as we were travelling, and near Kettleshulme a couple of red deer were seen in the woodlands. At The Knot we ejoyed an excellent evening repast before returning home under starlit skies with a beautiful crescent moon (Brrr….more frost!) Back in Parwich just in time to get the heat on in the garden frame after another lovely trip.

Thanks to our driver David, who somehow always finds somewhere new to take us.

Our next visit is Castle Howard near York on May 13th. At present we have spare places on this trip which may be available to non Members. The coach leaves the Green at 8am.  Contact Alan Lowes (tel. 279) to reserve a place, the cost will be £8-50 entry to Castle Howard plus the coach costs.

The First Responders asked us to post the following:

A THANK YOU FROM PARWICH FIRST RESPONDERS … AND WHY NOT JOIN US???

We have been rather busy over the last few weeks and we would like to thank all those villagers who have helped when someone has become unwell – you know who you are – and the community spirit in this village is fantastic – thank you.

For those of you who don’t know about Parwich First Responders we are a group of 15 or so villagers who have been trained by East Midlands Ambulance Service. They ‘employ’ us and insure us – after a 999 call has been received from our immediate area, if they feel it is appropriate, they call us and we respond. (more…)

Carolyn’s Corner (No. 1)

Many thanks to Emma Spence (Pond Cottage) for supplying us with this post.

A huge amount of support and genuine concern has been expressed by people from all over the village relating to Carolyn. Most know by now that Carolyn suffered from a stroke last Wednesday and is currently recovering in the Derby Royal Infirmary.

With so many people asking after Carolyn it was thought (following agreement from Howard) that a good way to keep her friends updated on her progress would be to make use of our community website. One of the main ideas behind this is that Howard can keep us informed by sending updates to be posted on the website. Another purpose for this is that we can use the “comment” facility to leave messages that Howard can take and read to Carolyn to help her recovery. We can also use the comment facility to ask questions. A few of the questions you might have wanted to ask are answered below.

Although perhaps an unusual way to use our website, I hope this is useful to many of you and not considered inappropriate.

Howard has asked me to say thank you to everyone who has sent cards to Carolyn. He and Carolyn have opened and read each one together during his daily visits.

Ploughed On Despite Snow.

Our thanks to Di Turnbull for submitting this article.

Following the resurfacing and refurbishment of the hard play area on Parsons Croft, the P.A.R.C. committee arranged a working group to complete maintenance tasks, before the official reopening on 20th April 2008, at 11a.m.

What we didn’t expect was a fall of snow that very morning!

Undeterred, we all met, completing the necessary repairs. This involved replacing some of the posts and boards and beginning to form a planted area on the perimeter path.

It turned out to be a beautiful sunny morning. We worked hard but also had lots of fun. In four hours, the job was done. Amazing what can be achieved with a few tools, some cement, a bit of muscle and a packet of chocolate biscuits!

Thanks go particularly to the Tennis Club, whose members made up the majority of the volunteer workforce.

We all look forward to using this superb village facility in the years to come.

PARWICH.ORG notes with amusement – and no small measure of pride – that the Diocesan Office in Derby were well and truly spoofed by last week’s “Ring Tones for Parwich Church” post.

Having contacted the office to seek “fast track approval” for the project, our vicar was surprised to receive a totally genuine reply – complete with an application form for the new system, and a list of meeting dates at which the application could be considered.

“Is the direction in which they want rural churches to go?”, he wondered, as the prospect of “Crazy Frog” calling Parwich parishoners to prayer edged closer to reality.

This morning, a rather embarrassed second e-mail arrived from the same office, admitting their mistake. (“In their defence, they said that they hadn’t thought this kind of system was very typical of Parwich!”)

With the same story having been picked up by the Ashbourne Evening Telegraph, it all goes to show that a little light-hearted blogging can go a long way.

In which case, we appear to have a rather powerful tool at our disposal!

Parwich is in the Ashbourne Telegraph twice this week.

Firstly, there is a comment on our two posts, about the new quarry and the new bells (1st April 2008).  PARWICH.ORG makes the news!

Secondly there is a longer feature on the new shop at the Sycamore.  Well done Janet and Steve.

I have just been onto Derbyshire County Council again, with regard to the not so ‘temporary’ traffic lights. I have spoken to David Nicholson (01629 580000 extn 7685) and the lights will be present for at least another 12 months minimum. Apparently a new wall has to be built, but so that it is not undermined by the river, (“a unique problem in Derbyshire”) then the barrier is added to comply with current standards. Their design teams are looking at the problem and the cost will be in excess of £300,000 (cynically- is this the real problem). I did suggest that maybe the problem wasn’t unique in the country & do their designers contact other authoritities to share information & ideas? The reply was “No”.

The reason that the lights do not always work is because according to DCC someone is regularly tampering with them!

This blog can also be found with the comments in the blog below, but I felt this information was important enough to stand alone.

Parwich in the Sunday Telegraph.

PARWICH.ORG notes with pleasure that our village has once again attracted the attention of the national media. In last weekend’s Sunday Telegraph Travel section, Tom’s Barn was nominated as one of “the UK’s best cottages for lovers” – although, as its owners are quick to point out on their website:

“We do stress that both our cottages are perfect for all couples at all ages and stages of their relationship.”

Click here to read the article. Tom’s Barn is mentioned on Page 3.

For a full list of the many fine holiday cottages in our area, please look at the “Holiday Lets” section on the right hand side of this page – and if you know of any omissions from the list, then please e-mail us or leave a comment.
