Thanks to DDDC for the following information:

For the 10th year in a row, Derbyshire Dales District Council is encouraging people to ‘shop local’ this Christmas by introducing free parking across the district from 1st December.
The free parking from 2pm throughout December comes on top of residents’ parking concessions that allow local people to park free every day of the year up to 11am and after 4pm.
This means Dales residents have free parking for 21 hours each day over the festive period, which helps local people and local traders.
Free parking extends to midnight each day and motorists are reminded not to leave anything valuable in their vehicles as the lead up to Christmas can also be a choice time for thieves.

Butterfly Reserve Open Day

Hoe Grange Quarry

The first Open Day for Derbyshire’s first Butterfly Reserve has been organised for Sunday the 23rd of July from 11 am to 3 pm.

Members of Butterfly Conservation East Midlands, including Ray Walker (Hon Warden), Derek Brownlee (Hon Assistant Warden) together with Pat and Ken Orpe will be able to show visitors around this abandoned limestone quarry where already 24 species of butterflies have been recorded including Dark Green Fritillary and the Peak District version of the Brown Argus. It will also be possible to see the work that many volunteers have done to enhance the habitat so as to increase the biodiversity at the site.

Directions. From the cross road in the centre of Longcliffe village, proceed in a north westerly direction towards Slipper Low Farm and just after the brow of the first hill, take the first left, just before a bungalow, and then proceed down a limestone track and park by the entrance gates to the Nature Reserve at the end of the track (SK222562).

Please note there may be parking problems in Ashbourne today as a number of caravans moved onto the Shaw Croft Car Park last night. (See report on the Ashbourne Telegraph website.)

It is not known how long the situation will continue. Alternative parking includes the Market Place, the overflow field by the Fire Station, the Leisure Cetre car park, the ‘bus station’ and Sainsbury’s car park. Do let other readers know when this is resolved by adding a comment to this post.

Update – 12 midday Friday 15th July

Re. Traveller encampment, Shawcroft car park, Ashbourne

Derbyshire Dales District Council owns and operates this car park, and a spokesperson said:

We have visited the encampment, which appears to comprise a number of connected families all of whom are apparently Irish Travellers. While their representatives have informed us they intend to move on by Monday at the latest, we have in any case instigated an immediate court order process to remove them and in the meantime are constrained by the law. We will however be monitoring the site closely.

CULLAND HALL OPEN GARDENS AND SPECIALIST PLANT FAIR

It was twenty years ago that the owners of Culland Hall embarked on creating a memorable garden at their home. Years of dedication have come to fruition to produce an exquisitively painted corner of Derbyshire….walled water gardens edged with cool white allium….hot reds and vibrant oranges ignite the kitchen garden, an old fashioned potager bursting with fruits and vegetables for the kitchen, a woodland walk with an autumnal palette of burnt sienna and ochre, painterley coloured double borders (more…)

Cyclists Survey

Call for cyclists to reveal their cycling habits in the Peak District National Park

Information is being gathered on the use of the following cycling routes that have been created through the Pedal Peak Phase II project:

• The Little Don Link – between Sheffield and the Trans Pennine Trail, via Stocksbridge and Langsett.

• The Staffordshire Moorlands Link – between Stoke and Leek via the Caldon Canal.

• The White Peak Loop – linking the Monsal Trail with Matlock, and the High Peak Trail with Buxton.

• The Hope Valley Link – linking Hathersage to Bamford.

The online survey opens on Monday October 12 and will be available until Monday November 23
www.surveymonkey.com/r/PedalPeakII

Tim Nicholson, Peak District National Park transport policy officer, said: “We are interested in finding out how the project has affected cycling in and around the Peak District and would like cyclists to help us by completing the survey which asks about where and how they cycle in the area.

“This information will help us plan where more new routes could be introduced and will help provide evidence when we come to apply for funding for them.”

The survey results will form part of an evaluation report to be submitted to the Department for Transport in March 2016 on the success of the Pedal Peak II Project.

The Pedal Peak Phase II project won funding from the Department for Transport in 2013 to improve facilities for cyclists in and around the National Park. The project partners are the Peak District National Park, Barnsley Metropolitan Borough Council, Derbyshire County Council, Sheffield City Council and Staffordshire County Council.
