Should we convert our phone box into a library?
Posted in Services on Monday November 30, 2009| 3 Comments »
A blog reader has told us that the BBC have reported this weekend (see article) that villagers in Somerset have converted their traditional red phone box into one of the country’s smallest lending libraries. Users deposit a book they have read and swap it for one they have not. Should we try the same in Parwich?

I don’t normally post this information so far in advance, but as it is getting dark so early, you may wish to get organised today, for the rubbish collection next Saturday. The next one is not until 20th February.
Further power cut today?
Posted in Services on Sunday November 22, 2009| Leave a Comment »
A Parwich resident was told yesterday that a further power cut was likely this afternoon because there is still further work required to clear the tree(s) from our power lines.
However Central Networks (tel. 0800 056 8090) have no planned cuts on their computer system (10am Sunday morning) for our area, so are unable to confirm this. If we hear more we will update this post. If you hear more please add a comment or email parwich@hotmail.co.uk .
Last night’s power cut & more
Posted in Services on Saturday November 21, 2009| Leave a Comment »
Part of our area experienced a power cut from about 1am last night/early this morning (Friday/Saturday). It lasted between three and four hours if my central heating timer is to be believed.
Some of you may have slept through it, so you may want to check any electrical timers.
Added at 5-45pm on Saturday 21st – I guess you would have had to have been on holiday to have missed the second power cut today. It rather renders the above redundant!
Added at 9pm on Saturday – Eon (?Central Networks) report the power cuts were due to trees interfering with the power lines supplying Parwich and Tissington. There is a possibility that there will be a further power cut tomorrow afternoon. Hopefully we will be able to post confirmation of this tomorrow morning.
Anyone ordering oil?

Keeley B of Parwich (or are you technically Eaton & Alsop?) is about to place an order for oil (domestic) so if anyone wants to order at the same time in order to get a bulk delivery discount, please contact Keeley.
(Emails to parwich@hotmail.co.uk will be forwarded for those that have not already met Keeley. Also parwich.org would like to say a belated welcome to the three Parishes.)
TV Transmitter Fault
Posted in Services on Friday November 6, 2009| 1 Comment »
Those of us in Parwich still using an old fashioned aerial have lost BBC 1. It went off early evening yesterday and at the time of writing this it was still off air. The BBC are aware of this and have someone working on the transmitter fault at present. They hope to rectify it soon. (Back on at about 4-30pm today.)
If you want to report any transmitter faults go to the UK Broadcast Transmission website for the contact details for each channel.

Parwich Village Action Group

The web pages here at PARWICH.ORG for the Parwich Village Action Group have been updated, along with links to the 2004 Village Management Plan and the previous surveys and reviews that it is based on.
The Management Plan has aims relating to:
- The Environment
- Affordable Housing
- Community and Sports Hall Facilities
- Roads, Traffic and Parking
- Children, Teenagers and Young Adults
The Plan is due for revision, especially given all the changes in the Village over the last five years. Also the Peak District National Park Authority are keen that we look at our community taking the lead in developing a Management Plan for the Parwich Conservation Area, following on from last year’s Appraisal by the Peak Park Authority. Parwich Parish Council also supports looking at this.
We are keen for more people to be involved in the Village Action Group, but also we are keen for suggestions as to how we should establish what village residents see as the current priorities. We are reluctant to undertake yet another questionnaire, and would welcome ideas for alternative ways of gathering people’s views.

‘Rural Health Link’
Posted in Services, Transport on Tuesday July 7, 2009| Leave a Comment »
Rural Health Link is a new project aimed to help people in this area attend health related appointments. There is a 50% subsidy on transport costs to all health related appointments, including trips to GPs (both Hartington and Ashbourne Surgeries), hospitals, chiropodists, dentists and physiotherapy.
This is particularly relevant to those of us who live in Parwich, Alsop, Pikehall and Ballidon, as there is no public transport at all for patients going to the Hartington Surgery.
Those in our area wanting to use the Rural Health Link please call Ashbourne Community Transport on 01335 300 670, and ask for the Rural Health Link Co-ordinator.
Rural Health Link is a working partnership between Ashboune Community Transport, Buxton & District Volunteer Centre, Bakewell Community Transport and Derbyshire Dales Volunteer Centre, and is supported by Derbyshire County Council (Cllr Simon Spencer’s community grants).
This is in addition to the existing provision by these groups. The Rural Health Link Co-ordinator will as appropriate organise your transport with these groups.

*** We have been asked to point out a problem that is regularly occurring on The Green on these days. If you leave rubbish to be removed, you must be in attendance when the wagon comes to help load it. There is only one council refuse collector, and it is your responsibility to get the refuse on to the wagon yourself. At the moment some people are leaving their rubbish there on Friday and not returning on Saturday morning, leaving it to a few on Saturday morning to load all their rubbish onto the wagon.***

Parwich public phone stolen
Posted in Parish Council, Services on Sunday June 7, 2009| 2 Comments »
The phone box in Main Street has not been decommissioned but apparently the pay phone has been stolen. BT do have a long list of public phones that are being decommissioned, but so far ours is not one of them. (The confusion arose because ours disappeared at the same time as BT were removing phones elsewhere. However there have also been a number of phone thefts.)
The Parish Council are in contact with BT in order to get it reinstated as soon as possible.
What are you thoughts?
Note: our phone box is a Grade 2 listed building.

Is your family safe from fire?
Posted in Services on Wednesday May 20, 2009| Leave a Comment »
There were surprisingly few at the Fire Safety meeting last night, but we all learnt important messages.
- Did you know that the Fire Service will supply and fit smoke alarms free of charge, and that modern alarms are sealed units that last for 10 years (no batteries to change)?
- Or if you are over 60, our own Brian, part of Derbyshire’s HandyMan Network, will supply and fit alarms free of charge – phone 0845 850 8013
- Keep room doors closed at night to keep safe
- Don’t use a chip fryer, a big source of fires.
- Hair straighteners, curling tongs and hairdryers can be a problem, as they become hot, and then are left on a surface which could ignite.
- Best not to leave the TV on standby at night, turn it off.
- Overloading electrical sockets with adaptors and multiways can be a problem.
- Best not to run the washing machine at night or when you are out- a fault could cause a fire.
Many thanks to the Ashbourne crew who came to talk to us- they can be contacted below, and thanks to the Parish Council, who sponsored this meeting.
Thank you to Martin for sending in this post. Click on poster to enlarge.

Time for Summer Bedding Plants and Baskets…
Posted in Gardens, People, Services on Saturday May 16, 2009| Leave a Comment »
It’s the time of year where many of us start thinking about summer bedding plants, baskets and containers…
Leatherbritches Nursery, owned and run by our own Bill Whitfield (affectionately known to some as “Big Bill”), is definitely worth a visit.
There is a large selection of summer bedding plants to enable you to make your own fantastic displays and for those with less time there is a range of pre-planted baskets and containers that you can put straight out in the garden. Instant effects with none of the hassle!
As well as the summer bedding plants, there are herbaceous perennials / shrubs and alpines etc.
If you’re not a flower person, there is an excellent range of vegetable plants.
The nursery is opposite the Bentley Brook pub and is open 7 days a week from 9.30 to 5.30.
Bill offers free delivery to the village and a discount for locals / villagers.
You can contact the nursery on 07713 743295 or for out of hours enquiries contact Bill on 390571.

Faulty Traffic Lights, Potholes etc.
Posted in Police, Roads, Services on Saturday April 4, 2009| 5 Comments »
At Thursday night’s Annual Parish Council meeting, the problems of our “temporary” traffic lights were discussed at length.
These first set of lights going towards Ashbourne but after Bradbourne Mill – the road should be sorted by late summer.
As for the second set of lights nearer to Bentley Brook, there is no timescale as to when reconstruction will take place.
It was acknowledged that the lights are often faulty, which could lead to a serious accident – so can we all start reporting these faults.
PC Ian Cooper said that after every report, the police will check the lights and then the contractor will go out and readjust the lights.
Please only report them if they are faulty, and not just if you think they are too slow at turning green. That way, maybe we will end up with reliable lights – but this is obviously going to be a long term issue.
Please ring the Call Derbyshire number: 08456 058 058 or 01629 760247. The County Council call centre staff with then get someone to look at the issue. The same number can be used for potholes and icy roads.

No More Fish & Chips
Posted in Services on Thursday March 5, 2009| 4 Comments »
There is a notice on The Green saying that there will be no more fish & chips in Parwich because of lack of trade. So it is back to cooking on a Friday night.
Maybe if the village had not been messed around on dates just after Christmas, with people turning up for fish & chips and no van, then the support would have continued. Reliability is the key.
Where do you buy your heating oil?
Posted in Oil, Services on Friday February 20, 2009| 19 Comments »
Just after filling my oil tank a while back, I had two very irritating conversations. One with Nia, who said that her man in Leek charges 5p per litre less then Halso and Peak Oil. And one with Jane B who said that, whenever they are quoted a price per litre by Halso or Peak Oil, they always haggle and get a reduction. I felt I had paid over the odds.
So, please tell me – where do you get your oil? Does anyone have a cheap(er) supplier? Do you always shop around and, if so, who tends to be cheaper? Do you always haggle and get the pence-per-litre price knocked down and, if so, by how much? Who has had the price reduced by the most? If you get a good price next time you buy, put it on the blog so we can all jump on the bandwagon and get hold of some cheaper oil. This information would be useful for everyone in the village who heats their house and water with oil.

Emergency Vehicles Getting Lost in Parwich village
Posted in First Responders, Roads, Services on Wednesday December 17, 2008| 4 Comments »
As you are probably aware many of us have the names of our houses as addresses, and rarely use the street name (if it exists). A village map is in the process of being produced, and it is hoped that when this is sited in the village it will help visitors find their way around. This process is well underway and we look forward to its completion.
However in the interim there have been difficulties for emergency vehicles trying to find addresses in the village. Recently we had a fire engine and the senior fire officer up here at Gibbons Bank by mistake looking for Monsdale Lane.
Today the emergency ambulance needed help finding a house which had made a 999 call. The emergency services have asked for our help – especially with the festive season coming up.
As a temporary solution permission has been given to site a copy of the First Responders village map on a board on the roadside near to the south entrance to the village, next to the drive to Stephen Dale’s yard. We hope this will meet with the village’s approval.
However if anyone is unhappy about this, or has any alternative better solutions to the problem, we are more than happy to reconsider. Do please ring us on 390 529 or add comments to this blog entry.
Here’s to a healthy trouble-free Christmas (or is that an oxymoron?)
Season’s Greetings from Jean and Martin Compton, on behalf of Parwich First Responders
