Hill Race 2009

Thank you to Graham, our roving reporter for this evening:
No Haile Gebrselassie ( -spell that without Google!), no Ron Hill, no Roberto Buntingo, no Paula R (she told us the lack of course toilets prevented an appearance this year) – no matter – 80 of the region’s best runners (and me) lined up for the annual Parwich Hill Race this evening.
The weather was warm and sticky but much more pleasant than last years deluge.
Even if I wasn’t a keen runner (enthusiasm here being a definite talent substitute), the Hill Race night would be one of my favourites of Wakes week. With the fair in full swing, and crowds congregating on the streets around the pub and the green, it tends to maintain a good natured carnival atmosphere which is starting to be lost on the evening of Wakes Saturday, (which I find is becoming sadly marred by the intimidating groups of marauding binge drinking youth’s largely from outside the village smashing glass, throwing firework’s and racing cars). Children’s races – Monday night – a scorcher…….
Posted in 2009, Posts of Note, Sport, Wakes, Young people on Monday June 29, 2009| Leave a Comment »
Thank you to our roving reporter for the evening Nia:
It all started well, with Dennis, missing his usual side kick – Brian- getting the races off to a flying start at bang on 6.30pm. Children were clutching their brown envelopes of money and sucking on revolting looking purple chews with more additives in them than a bag of candy floss from the fair, by the time the roving reporter made it down to the sports ground…..
The birth explosion in Parwich around the millennium meant the tape holders had to work doubly hard as heats had to be run before the finalists could be decided. The ‘smarter’ children quickly realised they needed to ensure they got in the right heat in order to guarantee a place in the final. For the boys that meant avoiding Jack G. and Jacob B. and the girls had to avoid Bethany F. These 3 youngsters were obviously under strict instructions to bring home to the dosh as they were flying down the home straight into 1st place in every race they entered.(unless it was against each other of course….) School rounders at QEGs last night

A team of about 20 boys and girls went to a QEGs rounders tournament last night in the blazing hot sunshine. The highlights were beating Longford 7:3 and getting through to the quarter finals where sadly we were knocked out by Clifton. Still, the kids clobbered the ball hard a few times, made a few great catches, ran like the wind and had a blast. (more…)

The Parwich Panoramic ‘Five’
Posted in Environment, Memorial hall, Pub, Sport on Friday June 12, 2009| 3 Comments »
A group of running enthusiasts (well Paul D, Don and me) are organising an event in aid of The Memorial Hall rebuild to be staged on the evening of Tuesday 4th August.
There will be a series of fell runs for juniors (under 8’s, 10’s and 12’s) followed by the inaugural running of the “Parwich Panoramic Five” which is a beautiful 5 mile (approx.) cross country run under the auspices of The Fell Runners Association. The course follows the skyline around Parwich and Alsop-en-le-Dale, and will provide runners with a series of spectacular views around Parwich and Alsop.
Janet has kindly agreed that race control will be The Sycamore Inn, and the junior events will be starting at 6:30pm, with the senior event around 7:15pm.
We are hoping to attract local schools, as the junior event is one of a series of junior fell races taking place in Kirk Ireton, Thorpe (details to follow) and Bradbourne on Sunday 30th August.
Anyone who would like to run, jog or even walk is welcome, as every entry will help with the Memorial Hall funds.
We also are looking for volunteers to help with registration and marshalling, and if you are interested please contact either Paul Drummond (561), Don Higgins (773) or Graham Johnson (344).
Thanks Graham.

Due to the poor response to last week’s tennis sessions we have decided to change the format.
From 10am – 11am the courts will be available for the 7 -11 year olds to come and play with help from 3 of our older juniors (Alex, Will and Catherine). The cost will be £1 per session. From 11am to noon the courts are available for the senior Juniors to play and the cost for this is also £1.
If there is sufficient interest then coaching will be made available on 6th, 13th, 20th June and 4th 11th 18th July.
This will cost £18 up front for all 6 sessions or £4 per session on a turn up basis.
If you are interested please can you let Nia know ASAP as the coach needs to be booked. (Alternatively email your name and contact details to parwich@hotmail.co.uk, clearly indicating that it for forwarding to the Tennis Club.)

Man of the Moment – Star Rugby Player
Posted in 2009, Posts of Note, Sport, Young people on Monday March 30, 2009| 2 Comments »
Bertie Linnell – the young blonde hooligan – has for the last year been the Captain of Ashbourne Rugby Club U9 team. Yesterday he lead them to the final of the NLD (Notts, Leics and Derbys – for the non sporting types….) competition. Unfortunately they were then defeated by West Bridgeford but Bert has consistently been man of the Match and we may have found an outlet for his energies!
Ashbourne RUFC says “The Under 9’s travelled to Newark to participate in the Notts, Lincs & Derbys Cup to take on the best teams from across the three counties. Most of the opposing teams are from much bigger and more established clubs, but Ashbourne displayed maximum quality, effort and determination to come away with a well-deserved runners up spot.
The defeat in the final cannot disguise what was a fantasic achievement by the team to be recognised as the second best Under 9’s team from across the three counties of Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire and Derbyshire.

Another report from Parwich’s own sports reporter, Nia:
Yet again the ladies of Parwich (in the most flexible method of interpretation…) remain victorious in their conquest of the Leek Netball league. With Wendy swanning off to the sunshine, Olivia was drafted back onto the team but Jan seemed not to need any support in the D as she set a new 95% scoring record. (more…)

Sent in by Nia, our roving sports reporter…
The ladies of Parwich have had two fantastic victories in the last two weeks. The Leek league is made up of young fit women and girls but they are no match for the steely- eyed determination and the years of experience that we display. Our first victims were Leek Hockey Club who had all the confidence of youth. They watched us putting on knee supports, trying to hide post baby tummies and struggling to move with grace and energy and decided they were in for an easy victory. However…….
Parwich against Preston – Ladies’ football.

“In the course of some rather aimless surfing the web” (his words!), Christopher came across a poster advertising a football match between Parwich Ladies and Preston Ladies, as part of the Shrewsbury Hospitals’ Carnival in 1938.
Presumably, this referred to a ladies’ football team from Parwich hospital. Does anyone know anything more about it?

Apologies for the late publication regarding this week’s Ashbourne News Telegraph. Unfortunately the blog team are a man down, as Peter is not well at the moment.
From Sunday, we will also be losing Christopher – so if you are interested in joining this very friendly, small team, please email us.
- p3. Keeping with the traditional name – A ‘new’ name for the hospital, but Mrs V Wright from Parwich who submitted two names is quoted as saying, “If that’s what people want then fair comment, but it’s a shame a new building hasn’t got a new name….”.
- p5. Compost fire firm wins ‘green’ award – Vital Earth which of course has Parwich links through Mr Robert Shields, has won the International Green Hero Award and will now be automatically put forward in European Business Awards for the Environment. A spokesman for the judges said that they were not aware of the fire incident, but this would not have necessarily affected their decision if they had known. (more…)
Nifty Netballers strike again

The Parwich ladies romped to a very convincing win last night in Leek. The final score was 26-4 and it has to be said that the defending players – Sarah, Nia and Ruth did not break into a sweat! All sweating was left to Olivia Flowers, who has returned to the Parwich team after short child rearing break. Straight back in at GA she was darting around the D and popping the ball neatly in the net. Janette (also a Flower….) was on fine form launching impossible looking shots which sailed through the hoop without touching the sides. (more…)

Congratulations to Parwich Netball Team who began the spring season (the snowdrops are beginning to appear, but Spring!) with a 12 – 6 victory last night in the Leek Netball League.
The team was Olivia, Jan, Wendy, Jannette, Ruth (From the Bluebell), Sarah and Nia. They have been coached by ex England netballer Amanda Johnson for an added dimension!!!!
They play weekly so we should get regular up-dates. (Hopefully Nia will produce some match reports as entertaining as those on the Wakes Children’s Sports.)

The Dovedale Dash

Graham’s comment on this week’s Stunner post is worthy of posting in its own right. Click here for the results of the 2008 Dovedale Dash:
Sunday saw the annual madness which is the Dovedale Dash. 1200 runners from all over the world, descend on Dovedale for a 5 mile run over hill and down dale (and through the river).
It was also the 44th consecutive occasion that Clive Russell has competed, and although he didn’t match his win in the veterans section last year, he was runner up. A truly amazing achievement.
He was joined by a gaggle of Linnel’s, a Drummond, a couple of Amos’s to name but a few.
I sadly was consigned to my sick bed with a bad case of Chinese bird flu (is there any other kind?) and couldn’t even spectate.
Well done Clive!
