Well you see we had two cracking wins this week. The team we played in the Tuesday League are ten points ahead of us and in the Thursday League opponents are a little behind us.
Matlock Tuesday League.
Home -12 July – 6.30pm – Whitworth Park.
We shared the games this week and all four were very keenly contested. Dennis and Clara E got back to winning ways by 21 -17. Ever dependable Edith and Rick stormed home 21 – 11 which in fact was the deciding factor in the overall result. Although Dawn A and John B tried hard they were well beaten by the Whitworth pair 19 – 21 and the same applied to Pat B and Harry B, just beaten 18 -21. The final result was Parwich 79, Whitworth 70. As you maths geniuses will note we won by 9 points so we are now one point behind Whitworth.
Next week we entertain Youlgrave they of elephant under the green fame. Has anybody got a camel lurking about somewhere that we could bury under our green before next week?
Next match – Away – Bradwell B – 19 July – 6.30pm.
Matlock Thursday League
Home – Bradwell – 14 July – 1.45pm.
The Thursday League Juggernaut rolls on! Really good wins in the doubles with two wins and a close second. Liz H and Sue A coming home 21 -14 and Dawn A and Ian J also winning 21 -19. With the close loss we were 61 – 54 ahead.
Five wins out of six in the singles with John H and Dawn A both winning 15 – 9. The singles score finished up Parwich 83, Bradwell 67. The combined score was Parwich 144, Bradwell 121. Bearing in mind the maximum score you can achieve is 154, we were only 10 below this.
Next match – Away – Wirksworth A – 21 July – 1.45pm
We have a club competition on Sunday, open doubles, but I’m sure a piece of cake could be in the offing.
The new fencing around the Hard Court Area is being erected this week. It is taking longer than expected so the courts will probably be out of use until next week. A more exact completion date will be advised when known. Apologies for any inconvenience.
The previous owner of the tabby cat who appeared in Smithy Lane last week, has been traced as the cat was microchipped.
Apparently this little cat had been rehomed from the village as a kitten 2 years ago and had gone to live in a town several miles away. Due to a change in family circumstances the cat had been brought back and subsequently escaped. Unfortunately she was in a very poor state when she was found. I took her to the vet used by Cheadle Animal Welfare Society, Meir Park Veterinary Hospital, where it was found that she had a broken tail and a huge abscess on her back. She has been put on a drip so will be staying in hospital for a few days. After which we will try to find her a new home once she has built up her strength. She weighed just 1.8kg and had become very weak.
She is a delightful little cat and I hope that she will soon be happy in a new home.
Susan S at Townhead has had black sacks of rubbish left on her driveway for several months. The dropping of the sacks coincide with black bin collection day. Can anyone shed any light on this or is anyone else experiencing a similar problem?
Please note that there is no Village Lunch in August, but that they resume in September. Here is next year’s menu list, so you can start salivating now. We will include them in our Diary and put posters here in on the Blog each month, but if you have any queries contact Val on tel. 390 458.
We have received the following from the Parwich Oddfellows:
To everyone who helped and supported us, and most of all showed their friendship.
Now the Wakes Week as ended, I don’t think we can say, “now the dust can settle” I haven’t seen any over the last week due to the inclement weather.
Last Saturday we marched off from outside our base, thanks to the Sycamore Inn, and its a big thanks also to the Carnival and Recreation Committee with the Parwich RBL for the week we all had, you have more than helped us, and to say we ended the week on the right note was down to the RBL team and our Brother Hotch, (who can ring a bell as well), I think I can quietly say people enjoyed the night.
Big thanks also to Mick and Val on the BBQ, organising and giving your time, it is appreciated greatly.
Thanks also goes to Petal (A Flower) for his trailer.
The family fun afternoon will hopefully take place when the weather improves, we will keep you posted and we hope to see you all there.
Most of all its the friendship that’s within the village that creates such a good week for the Oddfellows, and the support given by adults and now juniors joining the Lodge, this keeps us strong and secure for the future, so thank you Brothers and Sisters.
Thank you again to all involved and the support everyone gives.
The Committee.

Please be advised that the old fencing on three sides of the tennis courts is being renewed at the beginning of this week. One side should be taken down and replaced on Monday Tuesday and Wednesday. During the day the courts will not be available for use. In the evening they may be usable but please exercise caution in case the old fencing or other materials have not have been completely cleared away.

Update 9am
I spoke with Ilkeston Fencing this morning. Due to the weather they will not be starting the work on the Tennis Court fencing until Tuesday. They should now finish on Thursday.
Don’t forget that you can also see photos in other locations besides the Blog. There are some excellent photos from last night on the Legion’s Facebook page:
As always the Carnival & Recreation Committee do us proud, as can be seen in the proliferation of posts and photos here on the Blog. Indeed they come in fast and furious, so it can be hard to find what you are looking for. Here is a list of the posts and links to them, which will hopefully make reading the Blog easier:
It may be damp outdoors, but the ever popular Mrs Miggins’ Pie Shoppe are now playing in the Memorial Hall this evening. There will be a bar organised by the Legion. You can warm up with the following clip, before setting out for the fun from 6pm onwards at the Legion and at the Memorial Hall.
He/she may have been missing for a while as he/she is painfully thin and ravenously hungry. A very friendly cat who must have had an owner at some time. He/she has been passing through our garden for several days but always ran away until yesterday when he/she came for some food.
If you know who may have lost this cat please ring Margaret R on 01335 390369.

We do not want to discourage anyone from attending the Odd Fellows Family Fun in the afternoon and the live music in the evening tomorrow here in Parwich, but visitors to our area might want to attend Pikehall Harness Racing. It is always an great day out and there is just the one meeting this year.
Thank you Rita for this enthusiastic endorsement of Colin’s latest John Gammon novel:
Congratulations to Colin J Galtrey, our local author, on the launch of another book, an addition to the ‘Inspector John Gammon mysteries’ set in the Peak District. The book is the fifth in the series, titled “Annie Tanney”.
An exciting and enjoyable book to read. I recommend it!
Well done Colin,
Rita M
It is available both as a paperback and to download as an ebook.
At least we managed to lose one game this week, but it wasn’t a very good loss. In the other league we won. Perhaps next year we should have had a go in the hill race instead.
Matlock Tuesday League.
Home -5 July – 6.30pm – Cote Heath.
Cote Heath got relegated from the top division last year and have been winning for fun this year. They have some really very good players, but then so do we. The match was shared two games each with the ever reliable Edith and Rick winning 21 – 7. Tony and Sue A also played their little socks off to win 21 – 17. Although our other two pairs lost because we managed to accumulate more points than they did a win was possibly on the cards, and as you know dear reader points mean prizes in crown green bowls. The final score was Parwich 67, Cote Heath 66. Only one point in it, but a win is a win. Following last week’s win we had moved up a place in the division, but I think that this win may well not be sufficient to keep us there.
Next match – Home – Whitworth Park – 5 July – 6.30pm.
Matlock Thursday League
Away – Chatsworth – 7 July – 1.45pm.
Few we lost! But only just. There were two very close games in the doubles this week with Harry and Audrey B just losing 21 – 20 and Ian J and Clara E losing 21 – 19. After the doubles the score was Chatsworth 63, Parwich 49.
The singles were split three games each with a rare event taking place with Dawn, Edith, and Rick all losing. Fortunately the losses were not that great and the singles score was Parwich 71, Chatsworth 60. Now those of you with a calculator will have worked out that we therefore lost the match 123 – 120. We were in second place in the league; however this loss may drop us down a place or possibly two, which would be useful.
Next match – Home – Bradwell – 14 July – 1.45pm.
See you down at Parsons Croft on Saturday and perhaps Sunday too when we entertain Hazelwood for a friendly.
