Our Weatherman in the Village says:

Last week was another wet one with again more than an inch of rain recorded. Thankfully the rain has temporarily ceased, but it looks like it will return in the middle of next week.

Parwich Bus Service

Parwich Bus Service

Contact has been made with both District and County Councils and the Parish Council is pleased to summarise the response from the Senior Project Officer Local Bus Network at Derbyshire County Council as follows:

1. As the tendering authority for supported bus services, Derbyshire County Council (County) determines which contracts it supports and this is not a decision that would be made by either the bus operator or its drivers.

2. Any rumours made by any driver would be complete speculation and are wholly without foundation.

3. The current expiry dates for the two buses are as follows:

i. Services 101-104 Ashbourne – Thorpe/Parwich/Kirk Ireton/Hulland Ward School Expires 25/10/2014

ii. Service 449 Ilam – Bakewell (Alternate Mondays) Expires 23/03/2015

4. As it is not permitted for County to enter into open ended agreements with operators to provide bus services, all of the contracts have end dates. When the end date for any contract is reached it may be possible to extend the contract for a further period, or alternatively a new contract could be tendered. The end date of a contract therefore certainly does not signify the end date of a service and, equally, the presence of a contract end date does not secure the continuation of any service until that time is reached, as the provision of any contract is dependent upon passenger use and the availability of funding.

5. County can confirm that there are no imminent or any current plans to change the services for Parwich. The Authority does face significant funding cuts over the next few years and this may have an impact on the funds available to support bus services across the county, however, as budgets for future years have still to be determined this is currently an unknown. Regardless, the Authority can assure the village that maintaining accessibility across the county will remain a high priority. Should it subsequently prove necessary to withdraw supported local bus services in the county as a result of funding cuts then this would not be done without undertaking a consultation process beforehand.

6. Whilst the bus service providing home to school transport has become a separate school days only contract, it is still a registered bus service open to the general public.

7. Any journey requiring a connection (Swift Services) will have a limited appeal to travellers, particularly when these involve infrequent services and given the many conflicting potential opportunities for connections and other constraints to timetables, it is not always possible to provide ideal connection opportunities. Whilst the Authority acknowledge that the current timetable does not provide ideal outbound connections with the Swift service towards Derby, the return afternoon connections are now good. Conversely, the previous timetable provided for good outbound connectivity but was very poor for the return journeys. We will have a look at the outbound journeys for the current timetable to see if these can be changed to provide for better connectivity onto the Swift.

County Councillor Simon Spencer attended Parwich Parish Council meeting on Wednesday, along with nine parishioners and he was able to hear the strength of feeling in support of the bus service and the need for improvements, particularly to the connection times. He will take these views back to the appropriate Cabinet Member. He explained that smart ticketing gives the Authority full details about the number of journeys made on each bus route and stressed how important it was to use this subsidised bus service, to show the Authority that it is an vital provision for the community.

Parwich Parish Council will be setting up a public meeting to discuss all the issues around Public Transport. Members of the Parish Council are aiming for a meeting in April, but the exact timing is dependent on the availability of the appropriate representatives from both County and District Councils.

Recycling Site

Recycling Site

Parwich Parish Council contacted Derbyshire Dales District Council because of concerns regarding the closure of the “bring” site at The Sycamore.

Members of the Parish Council have been informed by the District Council that the Environment Committee decided last November to reduce the number of sites because of the big improvements brought about by the new household recycling scheme. Everything that can be recycled at bring sites can now be recycled at home.

The District Council do not dispute that the site is used but compared to many other sites the material quantities are low. The period between Christmas and New Year put extra pressure on sites because collections are reduced due to Bank Holidays, but residents have extra waste.

Where there are particular difficulties with access or storage for residents using the kerbside service, it is necessary for the contractor, Serco, to visit and discuss the options available. Assisted collections can also be offered for residents who cannot move containers if they meet the criteria. The Helpline number is 01629 761122.

Operating recycling sites is a duplication of the service offered at kerbside and therefore it is for the above reasons that the site will be removed and cleaned on Tuesday 21st January.

At our Parish Council meeting our local District Councillor was unable to attend. Questions were raised during the public speaking item. The Parish Council will again contact District Council, as Councillors are particularly concerned that for whatever reason there was no consultation period with both residents and the Parish Council.

There is an opportunity for residents to have a say on District’s spending at the next open Forum meeting at Ashbourne Leisure Centre on Monday 3rd February. The meeting starts at 7pm and anyone who can’t attend in person can email questions in advance to  communityforum@derbyshiredales.gov.uk or via the District Council’s Facebook and Twitter pages @derbyshiredales.

Hello Possums.

A Canadian woman, who was knocked unconscious after tumbling from her horse, awoke to find herself speaking with a Scottish accent in yet another case of foreign language syndrome. Her first words were “Independence for Canada, down with the bloody Sassenachs“.

A 54 year old Chinese man murdered his close friend and neighbour, before committing suicide, so as to have a chess playing companion in heaven. Other residents said they were both fanatics and had heated exchanges during games. The murderer was a real oddball and an unpredictable firebrand, and his victim was the only man who could keep him in check.

New Signs for Limestone Way

The Peak Park Authority has organised the installation today of two new wooden signs in Parwich village to mark the route of the Limestone Way: one replacing a metal sign by Dam Farm and Japonica, and the other a new one by Hallcliffe gate.

The wooden signs look more fitting than the metal ones, though it prompts the query as to why there isn’t coordination between the Highways (County Council) and the Peak Park, with perhaps some consultation with the Parish Council, to have all the footpath signs matching.

Our Weatherman in the Village is reassuring about the prospect of snow, but warns of more rain:

Don’t be fooled by the settled weather today (Sunday) as there’s another Atlantic depression and front sweeping in from the west to bring more wet and windy weather later today and tonight. The coming week will be punctuated by more of the same – wet, windy and relatively mild. At least we’re not battling the snow!

Frosty start to Sunday morning

Thank you David G for these photos of this frosty Sunday morning, is this the the start of colder weather, with perhaps Ski Sunday next weekend?

Northern Lights over Parwich tonight?

A number of news reports today have suggested that tonight (Thursday) could be our best chance in years to see the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights. It is thought that the best time for viewing will probably be between midnight and 3am, and the Met Office’s current cloud cover forecast bodes well for our area.

If we do strike it lucky, any photo or video evidence would be greatly appreciated!

For more info, read the news reports in The Guardian / The Independent / The Telegraph.

For more alerts as the night progresses, Lancaster University’s AuroraWatch project has a regularly updated Facebook page, Twitter feed and website.

Street Lighting Review So Far

In the review of part-night street lighting here at parwich.org there continues to be strong support, with, at the time of writing, 77% in favour of some form of part night lighting, the most popular option (30%) being to extend the scheme to all Parwich’s street lights.

However, so far, in the polls on individual lights only a few people have voted, making any conclusions difficult. This is surprising given the strength of feeling in the original polls last March, where the Creamery Lane lights in particular raised a very strong response.

You can still vote in all the current street light polls below:

Plan of current street lighting in Parwich

street light plan

(Note. There is currently some discrepancy with at least one of the recent replacement street lights which should be on only part night staying on all night.  This is the case with Light 056373 at the opening of Church Walk between Hallcliffe Barn and Church Cottage. If you know of any other anomalies do add a comment to this post.)

Continue reading to have your say on:

(i) the individual street lights where the previous polls were not implemented,
(ii) the lights along the Main Street/Shaw Lane route, and
(iii) other specific lights that have been raised here at parwich.org since the introduction of part night street lighting.

Stargazing at Minninglow

New information panels have been installed to give stargazers a guide to the night sky over the Peak District National Park.

The Dark Sky panels, which will be changed seasonally, can be found close to Arbor Low stone circle and Minninglow burial mound, where the position of the stars seemed significant to our neolithic ancestors more than 4,000 years ago. To help people appreciate the relation of these special sites to the stars, the panels are positioned at nearby National Park car parks which are easily accessible and on clear nights provide good conditions for stargazing.

The car parks are both beside the High Peak Trail at:

• Parsley Hay, off the A515 near Hartington (nearest postcode SK17 0DG) • Minninglow, off the A515 at Pikehall (nearest postcode DE4 2PN). Continue Reading »

Hello Possums,

coffeeEveryone survived? Good. I bet those New Year resolutions are tumbling like wheat before the scythe.

Her Majesty the Queen broke with tradition after the Christmas service at Sandringham by declining to accept flowers from well wishers, including a ten year old boy who had traveled fifty miles with his parents. The reason being that One did not want to be bouquetlate for One’s Xmas luncheon, as last year the vichyssoise was stone cold, when the Royals finally sat down to luncheon.

Father Christmas brought Prince Andrew a Royal Monopoly set, where one pays much more than the properties are worth, and with a golf club (St Andrews). Prince Edward got a Royal Marines Action Man set, but soon tired of them and back in the box they presentwent. Prince Charles got a book of nursery rhymes to read to his seedlings at bedtime.
