Parwich Memorial Hall has commissioned a sculpture by local artist blacksmith Hayley Powell. Everyone will know her cuckoo by the Cuckoo Gate in Monsdale Lane (if not go and have a look). Here is a reminder of the unveiling of this in 2006 at a village picnic, that was very well attended despite a clash with the Wimbledon Men’s Final:
Hayley made the cuckoo sculpture when still an A-level student at QEGS; she has since then taken her degree and is now working full-time as an artist and blacksmith (trading as Forever Forged based at Claymills Victorian Forge near Burton on Trent).
Here are some more recent photos of Hayley and her work.

John B writes:
Now, I know you have all been wondering where on earth the final week’s report on the bowls club league results has gone to. Wonder no more. The league secretaries, bless ‘em, have taken some time to put the info together. Your wait to find out how the major sports club in Parwich has done is ended.
You will all remember – indeed, who could forget – that in the penultimate week we had lost both our matches. Well, we came back with a vengeance and the regular visitors from outer space who support us really cheered. Well, whatever the galactic equivalent of cheering is.
Matlock Tuesday League.
Home – 4 September – Matlock Bath.
We managed to share the games two apiece. However, our scores overall were a little bit better than Matlock’s. Edith Rider, partnered as usual by Rick Manning, won comprehensively. If only we had a few more Ediths and Ricks. Anyway, we won by 74 to 69.
Last year we finished fourth from top, having won 9 matches. This year we finished fifth from the bottom, having won 13 matches. In the world of crown green bowls. it’s points that count, not wins. Statistics are fun, aren’t they?
Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Baslow – 6 September.
We do try very hard to win doubles games, but again this week we lost 59 points to 40. Having said that, Clara Evans and Harry Bunting had a really good win. The singles players came to our rescue again, winning by 88 points to 51, thereby giving us an overall win of 128 to 110. Anyone for doubles?
Last year, we finished just below half way in the league. This year, we finished exactly half way in sixth place.
It really would be nice to see more residents from the village playing and supporting the only regular team from Parwich. Why don’t people come? As I mentioned last time, Ashbourne Bowls Club have invited us to play indoor bowls again this year, starting on Monday 8 October. If you want a go, give a bowls club member a call.
It will be a great shame if the Bowls Club ceases, but unless we can get more new members for next year, I cannot see us managing to get a team together and keep the club going. Come on Parwich, don’t let the last regular club fail!

We have received the following message from Heather H, who successfully climbed Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania this summer:
I just wanted to let you know how my trip climbing Mount Kilimanjaro went. It was just about the hardest thing I think I’ve done, but I had such an amazing time! As you know, before I could go I had to raise £2450. Many of you supported me by coming to my coffee morning, Swiss evening, buying biscuits and bread and thanks to your generosity I exceeded my target.
So here’s a bit about my trip and a few photos if you’re interested! One of the first things we did after arriving was to visit one of the schools that Childreach International is helping to fund. We had a brilliant day playing and singing with the children.
We set off on the climb the next day and the whole thing lasted 6 days – 4½ days up, 1½ back down. We started out walking through humid jungle… Continue Reading »

Our resident ornithological snapper J F-S has sent us this striking picture of two goldfinches. Unfortunately the photograph is striking in more ways than one!
J F-S says:
Sorry to say the Olympic goodwill has not filtered through to the goldfinch population.

Tomorrow – 7.45pm – Memorial Hall
The film that everyone has been waiting for! A group of British retirees decide to “outsource” their retirement to Best less expensive and seemingly Exotic India. Enticed by advertisements for the newly restored Marigold Hotel and bolstered with visions of a life of leisure, they arrive to find the palace a shell of its former self. Though the new environment is less luxurious than imagined, they are forever transformed by their shared experiences, discovering that life and love can begin again when you let go of the past.
Starring Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Bill Nighy, Ronald Pickup, Dev Patel & Celia Imrie

Listening to the silence outside in the dark a few evenings ago, I heard the call of a night jar, seemingly over the hill towards Ballidon.
Are there any birders/twitchers out there in Parwich, who can tell me whether the night jar is a regular visitor in the area? Have I just missed the night jar’s call in the past as I’m not a birder/twitcher and certainly not tuned in sufficiently to notice all bird calls?

Thank you to Jane B for the following; on a ‘Blog free sabbatical’ but still thinking of us:
Five of us cycled to Alstonefield to support the event and there was a good number from Parwich. Bradley Wiggins and Mark Cavendish were in the chasing group as they came up the hill into Alstonefield, just completing the King of the Mountains climb.
Cyclists have just left A515 coming down Green Lane to the River Dove, they looked like dots on the horizon Continue Reading »

For those of you that enjoyed the Tour de France and the Cycling during the Olympics, the Tour of Britain Cycle Race is coming through the Peak District on Monday 10th September. The timings below are approximate. It is a chance to see Olympic Time Trial champion Bradley Wiggins and his Sky team-mate Mark Cavendish who are both competing in the event.
| 37.9km | Ashbourne | 11:13 |
| 51.1km | SKODA KoM, Alstonefield (Cat.1) | 11:30 |
| 57.9km | Warslow | 11:39 |
| 65.3km | SKODA KoM, Morridge (Cat.1) | 11:48 |
The first Category One SKODA King of the Mountains climb of 2012 takes the race into the Derbyshire Dales, with a steep opening through the village of Turnditch before levelling off considerably towards the top at Cross o ‘th Hands.
After descending into Ashbourne, a short, steep unclassified climb leads towards the Peak District National Park, followed up by a long, main road drag after Fenny Bentley that runs parallel to the Tissington Trail, a former railway line now popular with cyclists and walkers.
A left fork takes Stage Two down to the River Dove via a fast descent, with the route crossing the river before climbing instantly on the SKODA King of the Mountains climb of Alstonefield that takes the race into Staffordshire.
Tree-lined at the bottom the climb begins gently but steepens as it turns away from the Dove into a constant gradient. The summit comes in the attractive Peak District village of Alstonefield with the views opening of the countryside opening up as the race levels off heading towards Hulme End and the Manifold Valley.

Take a look at this enthralling sequence of photographs taken by J F-S.
Our number one wildlife photographer writes:
Swallows often drink at the Parwich pond. The adult birds do this very neatly just kissing the water. The new young birds take sometime to master the skill. You can see their first efforts in this series of pictures.
