Our roving photographer took a short walk along the High Peak Trail to the Neolithic Burial Chambers up on Minninglow Hill. The low sun and clear air provided a magnificent vista as can be seen in the following photographs.
The acclaimed wildlife artist Esther Tyson is staging an exhibition of recent work in our stunning modern Memorial Hall. Esther lives in Parwich, and the exhibition presents an opportunity for the local community to see her work, as well as serious collectors of wildlife art.
Esther studied at Carlisle College of Art and the prestigious Royal College of Art. She has exhibited in galleries in London and all over the country. She has also received many accolades and awards for her work.
Esther is renowned for work that reflects her intense passion for lengthy study of wild life in its natural habitat. The work she produces evokes a powerful image of the very essence that she experiences in her observations. The exhibition will feature a wide variety of her work, from her local Derbyshire countryside to the mountains of Nepal and recent underwater studies in Dorset.
The exhibition takes place in Parwich Memorial Hall on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th November 2012, from 10am to 4pm. Admission is free, and all are welcome!

Our “Weatherman in the Village” says:
Bonfire Night turned out to be as predicted: cold and pretty clear, with the unsettled end to the week that I forecast. This weekend has been very pleasant again, but it doesn’t look like it will last, with tomorrow seeing a return of unsettled conditions which will probably dominate the rest of the week.

Hello Possums! The Weedkiller Weekly consists of genuine news items from far and wide, unlikely as some may seem, with just a little tweak here and there.
The annual “Eat Bugs For Balls” competition recently took place in Deerfield Beach, Florida. Edward Archibald retained his title as undisputed Maggot and Cockroach Eating Champion, winning a python for his efforts. Unfortunately he collapsed in agony shortly after the presentation and could not be revived by paramedics. The state coroner delivered a verdict of death by misadventure, after a post mortem concluded that his death was most likely due to a dodgy hot dog he had eaten prior to the event.
The NHS is having to arrange for morbidly obese patients to undergo body scans at local zoos, as standard hospital equipment cannot cope with them. Other treatments being considered are elongated neck dislocations, Hipposuction, Elephantiasis, Dingowings, Bi-polar Bear Disorder and Ape-endiceptomies.

Willing to spare no expense, he instructs his representative to turn his dream into reality. The Prime Minister’s overzealous press secretary latches on for its potential as a ‘good will’ story. Now, this unlikely team will put it all on the line and embark on an upstream journey of faith and fish to prove the impossible, possible.

Greetings, Guys. If anyone is any doubt as to why thousands upon thousands of pounds’ worth of pyrotechnic wizardry bang, sparkle, crackle and whizz into the night sky at this time of the year, you can safely lay the blame at the feet of Guido Fawkes, who – along with his Catholic buddies – failed in their attempt to blow King James VI and his parliament to kingdom come. Guido was discovered in the cellars below with 36 barrels of gunpowder. As it happened, the gunpowder was virtually useless and probably wouldn’t have even been capable of blowing his hat off. Guido and his fellow conspirators were “persuaded” to plead guilty to treason and were sentenced to be hung, drawn and quartered. Guido flung himself from the scaffold and actually hung himself to avoid this gruesome execution. Bonfires were lit across the land to celebrate the survival of the king.
What a hoot: a lady in Melbourne, Australia is advertising for night time guardians to watch over her whilst she sleeps. Pretty reasonable, you might think – except for the fact that the successful applicants will be expected to dress as owls. There are no meal breaks, but you are allowed a muesli bar if peckish. Three owls are required to work on a rota basis, at £25 per hour. Breakfast will be provided for the early bird, consisting of field mice, voles, frogs, toads and the odd slug or two.

Our “Weatherman in the Village” says:
A pretty good forecast last week, with Halloween proving the most unpleasant day of the week, as predicted – as a result we only got four sets of children demanding sweets with menaces, and Val and Nia must have stayed at home in front of the fire!
It looks like we will have a settled start to the week again next week, and an unsettled end with more extensive rain on Thursday and Friday. Bonfire night tomorrow looks like it will be OK, with the slim possibility of a shower, but all the signs are it will be quite cold and clear with light winds – the perfect bonfire night.

The missing ram Gary (or is it Bary?) was spotted this afternoon by Joanne J. Although somewhat taken aback by the size of the tup, this intrepid detective secured him in the garden of Hallcliffe until Sandra C was able to attend the identity parade. He has now been taken back into custody.
Asked for an explanation of events Bary (or is it Gary?), replied with a sheepish “no comment”. It was noted however that whatever he had been tup to over the last few days had left him somewhat lame. Is he pulling the wool over our eyes or do ewe know where he has been?

As we are moving to a new house without room for our magnificent player piano (popularly known as a pianola) we wonder if anybody local would like to buy it.
It was built in Germany in 1923 by Ibach & Sohn, a premium brand. As soon as I purchased it, in 1985, I had it fully refurbished by a pianola company in London and it remains in good condition.
My piano tuner in London thought it was a lovely instrument with a good tone, virtually as good as a small grand piano. It comes complete
with around 200 mostly classical piano rolls.I can put you in touch with a man who specialises in pianola maintenance and who used to look after it for me when I lived in Leicestershire. Offers please?

Earlier this week our new waste and recycling contractor Serco Ltd issued a media statement in which they stated they were confident all outstanding containers would be delivered and missed collections cleared by today (Friday 2 November).
It is now evident that Serco won’t hit this target, so here’s a statement from Derbyshire Dales District Council’s Director of Community Services, Peter Foley:
We are hugely disappointed with the performance of our waste contractors, Serco. But whilst we appreciate they have experienced serious issues, the only thing that matters to us is that our residents receive the service they have every right to expect.
We are working with Serco on a continual basis to resolve the problems. At the highest level, Serco are fully aware that we are holding them to account and they have responded with an action plan that includes the use of significant extra resources.
We know from comments made to us by local people that the majority of households are delighted with the new service as it enables them to recycle more at home than ever before. So when Serco eventually get it right for everyone, it’s going to be a first class service.
However, Serco know their performance to date is unacceptable and they need to get it right – and soon – to comply with their contractual obligations. They are fully aware we are not prepared to accept anything less.

Our “Weatherman in the Village” says:
Quite a good forecast last week; we did indeed have a wet Monday as predicted, although the rest of the week was probably drier than I thought it would be. Temperatures have dropped a few degrees in the last couple of days, with a real feeling of Autumn pervading.
It looks like the first half of next week will be reasonably dry, although it may start wet tomorrow and clear up as the day goes on. Generally the weather pattern is unsettled and we may see more blustery conditions from Wednesday onwards. The current forecast for Halloween is quite windy, with blustery showers which will hopefully blow a few witches off course (Val and Nia please note).
