Thumbs Up for The Horns!

I just wanted to say  that all the volunteers from the Cancer Research shop in Ashbourne had their  annual Christmas meal at The Horns this evening and it was fantastic!

I don’t go out to  eat very often, and hadn’t been to the Horns before.  It is so clean and  inviting inside, and we had a wonderful welcome from Callum and staff.  The  tables were set nicely and included crackers that were not horrible and cheap  but really nice!

The food was  delicious.  On our table people had:  pate, soup, prawns and mushrooms – all of which were delicious, especially the pate.  The main courses  included:  pork, beef, turkey and mushroom lasagne – they were really  delicious, the veggies cooked perfectly (the sprouts were the best I’ve ever  had!); finally the desserts were scrummy.  The portion sizes were just  right.  Most amazing was the price – just £14.99 which included  coffee!

So hats off and  Happy Christmas to The Horns – well done!

Oil Prices

We’ve just ordered some heating oil to top up before Xmas. I thought I’d just pass on the information that:

a) there seems to be a big differential in price between suppliers (EMO – 70p/litre incl VAT, PEAK – 65p/litre) and

b) both companies said the prices were currently heading upwards rapidly.

Peak Park Budget Announcement

Key areas protected from budget cuts
Extra money is to be spent by the Peak District National Park Authority supporting the local economy, communities and the environment despite budget cuts.
The authority has to make cuts of £1.8 million over four years from its £7.8 million budget.
In 2012/13 the authority needs to make permanent savings of £354,000 towards the four year total. Continue Reading »

The Peak District National Park Authority is to increase spending to protect the national park from damage by 4x4s and trail bikes.

At the Authority meeting yesterday, members agreed to allocate an extra £100,000 over the next two years to:

• Resolve problems faster. • Speed up production of route action plans to manage the tracks. • Create the capacity to potentially deal with more Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) to conserve the landscape’s natural beauty and wildlife. • Improve engagement with user groups and local communities. • Involve volunteers more. • Contribute to the work of partners in monitoring and reporting illegal use. Film Night for Christmas

Return to the magic and wonder of C.S. Lewis’ beloved world The Chronicles of Narnia — via the fantastic Narnian ship, the Dawn Treader. Edmund and Lucy Pevensie, along with their cousin Eustace, their royal friend King Caspian and a warrior mouse named Reepicheep, find themselves swallowed into a painting and onto the Dawn Treader. Their mission — on which rests the fate of Narnia itself — takes the courageous voyagers to mysterious islands and a river that turns to gold, to fateful confrontations with magical creatures and sinister enemies and to a reunion with their friend and protector, the “Great Lion” Aslan.

Guide to Understanding Planning

Understanding planning

A guide to make planning easier for residents to understand has been published by the Peak District National Park Authority.

At the same time the authority and parish councils in the Peak District National Park area have agreed a Parish Accord, which sets out what to expect of each other during the planning process. Continue Reading »

Winster Guisers at the Sycamore

Guising or mumming is an ancient tradition of Christmas plays.  The Winster Guisers are possibly one of the oldest groups performing, come and see them at

8pm Friday 9th December in the Sycamore Inn

Note: the Parwich Mummers will also be on tour on the evening of the 10th December (click here for more details)

Faster Broadband Survey

The Department for Culture, Media and Sport has allocated money to help improve broadband speed in rural areas, but this can only be accessed by local authorities providing matched funding.  The Peak Park Authority are encouraging Park residents/businesses to fill in the local on-line surveys, which for our area is on the Derbyshire County Council website.

First Responders: Message in a Bottle

Villagers should look out for information about the Message in a Bottle scheme: on the blog, at the pub, in the Memorial Hall and via leaflets through your letter box.

This system allows people to keep vital medical information easily available for the emergency services, should they be called out to you.

Jean and Martin (529) will have a supply of these small bottles, which you can then keep in your fridge.

Your First Responders group would also like to say a big “thank you” to all those who have made generous donations to the group over the course of the last year. In many cases, these have been the result of asking for donations to PFR, instead of birthday presents. What a lovely idea! We hope that much delicious cake was still enjoyed!

The mummers return!

Update: please note the corrected date.

guizersIn accordance with time-honoured tradition, the Parwich Guizers and Mummers (also known as the Brothm Mummers) will once again be out and about for the Christmas season, performing their ancient play in a number of locations.

The troupe will be touring our region during the evening of Saturday December 10th, starting at the Coach and Horses, followed by the Bentley Brook, the Sycamore and the Legion.

Our weatherman on the hill says:

A cool mixed week to come with a little rain or showers, a bit of sun at times, temperatures rarely into double figures and the possibility of a ground frost if skies clear overnight.
