Everyone is invited to the Open Meeting on Community Renewable Energy, tomorrow (Tuesday) at 7.45pm in the Memorial Hall.

The meeting will be lead by John Youatt.  Although he will cover the points below, it is a meeting set up to enable our village to find out more about how we can help ourselves with becoming more sustainable – something which becomes ever more relevant as energy prices continue to rise.

1. Formation of Sustainable Youlgrave : why & how

2. Access to grants for feasibility studies for larger communities projects such as Alport hydro scheme, Friden AD plant

3. Help & support for individual projects, eg solar/pv on house roof

4. Government policies, eg Feed-in-Tariffs

5. Planning difficulties

Tickets for Buxton Festival

I have 2 tickets for Sunday 17th July 10.30am at the Buxton Festival (excellent seats 2nd row)

Will Hutton – Them and Us: Politics, Greed and Inequality
17 July, 10.30am. Opera House

Will Hutton’s latest book shows how our society has fragmented into inequality and sets out a powerful and brilliantly argued call for a fair society. His heartfelt campaign is for no less than a radical transformation of Britain, from its political system, media, and its over-reliance on big finance to the very values we live by. Writer, columnist and former editor of The Observer, Will Hutton musters convincing arguments for political change based on a firm moral framework, and his book is certain to inform the current affairs agenda for some time to come.

Tickets: £10

Please let me know if you can use them.

Swimming underwater: Part Six

Parwich artist Esther Tyson is working on a project to immortalise the seahorses of Dorset in art – but first of all, she has to learn to swim underwater. Esther’s project diary continues below…

Dorset: day one.

I’m tired; it’s been a long day starting with a drive around Holton Heath Trading Estate looking for a PADI sign. In actual fact it began earlier with a full English breakfast, but that was an unexpected treat due to a double booking on the accommodation front.

9.41am, a cup of tea and we jump right in to Chapter One of the dive manual: The Underwater World, followed by Dive Equipment, Scuba Systems, The Buddy System and Confines Water Dive Preview. At the end of each chapter there is a two page knowledge review and I’m tested.

Chapters Two and Three are long. They cover: Adapting to the Underwater World, Respiration, Dive Equipment, Buddy System: Communication and Procedures, Confined Water Dive Preview, The Dive Environment, Dive Planning, Boat Diving, Problem Management, Confined Water Dive Preview, General Open Water Skills, Open Water Dives 1 and 2.

The objectives are covered; I fill out the self-assessment and take three short exams.

I’m done in. Lunch, another mug of tea and we plough on with the practical side of things. We look at the different masks on show and check for fit, the snorkel, boots and fins. I try on a semi-dry wetsuit. Boy, it’s tough to pull on. How I’d fasten it on my own, I don’t know! My suit may be a cerise/purple, rather than the red of the dive center. I had hoped to be coordinated – but just when I’d pondered the red and black theme, I’m now red, cerise and yellow! Where’s the pot of gold?

We stand side by side to set up our gear. In front of me is the tank filled with compressed clean air, a BCD and some regs. I copy the routine of putting the equipment together then pack up. It’s now my turn to set up without help; did it all sink in? This was one of the steps I thought would be difficult, but having repeated the process a couple of times it now seems quite simple. This is good!

We finished at 6pm, and I’ve spent the last two hours walking in the edge of the surf, along the beach in Swanage. Revitalizing! And there is so much pink along the tide line…!

Another extremely successful Wakes Week is over and thanks must go to everyone who took part, spectators, participants, organisers and helpers, but without the hard work of the committee who meet, plan and co-ordinate the events we wouldn’t have this amazing week.  So special thanks to Kerry Allsop, Janet Bainbridge, Sandra Chadfield, Roger Cundy, Liz Edge, Denis Laycock, Alan & Barbara Lowes, Paula Lynam, Sharon Swindell and Karen Wigley.

Next year’s Wakes begins on Saturday 30th June 2012.

Children’s Sports Results

Well done to everyone who took part, here are the results from Monday evening.

FLAT RACES

1. Girls 9-10 –  50 yards

School newsletter 31

This week’s extended, two-page school newsletter is the last of the school year.
Please click here to open it.

The Masquerade Ball is scheduled to taked place on Saturday July 16th. Tickets are priced at £20, and they can be purchased from Tracy Marshall, Mandy Noble or Sally Peat. Alternatively, please ring 01335 390552 for further details.

Message from the organisers:

Ticket sales for this event, for whatever reason, have been very slow and we are becoming concerned as to whether this event should take place or not.

If you are interested in attending The Masquerade Ball and have not yet purchased your tickets, would you please do by  TONIGHT, so that we can assess whether to proceed with the event or whether to cancel or postpone it to a later date.

It would be incredibly disappointing to cancel or postpone, as we have put a great deal of effort into organising this event to co-inside with Parwich Primary School’s 150th year anniversary.

Due to lack of government funding, the PTA work very hard to raise money for the school to ensure that the children do not miss out on their educational needs, by raising money for educational trips, books etc.

So, please support this event if you can. We promise it will be a fantastic evening with exceptional food, a magician, music and wine! The only stipulation is a mask (which you don’t have to wear all evening) and no jeans or trainers (you don’t need a ball gown or tuxedo to have a good time).

BUT: please don’t forget buy your tickets by tonight –  Friday July 8th.

Parwich Bowls Club

Before starting on this week’s informative and knowledgeable details of the results of the league team a few words on the Bowls Extravaganza which took place on Wednesday night. We all thought, considering it was organised chaos, that it went off really well. Some of the participants were very good indeed. We will have to see if we can organise something else later in the year.  Perhaps we can try and persuade some adults to have a go. Well done to all concerned. It was fabulous to see the bowling green so full!

Turning to the informative and knowledgeable details for this week, we lost both matches. We will have to get some of the children to play for us.

Tuesday league -5 July – Home – Lafarge.
Last week was not good, this week was somewhat worse. The only consolation is that Lafarge are a much bigger club than us and have more players. The other factor of course is they played better than we did. We were exactly half way in the league. No doubt we have dropped down into the bottom half.
Next match 12 July – Away – Chatsworth.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League – 7 July – Away – Wirksworth.
Again this week we did not do well in the doubles games, losing all three again. One game however was only a narrow defeat. We did alright in the singles though, winning 4 of the 6 and only just losing in the other two. The result though was 129 to Wirksworth and 111 to us.
Next match 14 July – Home – Chatsworth.

Bletch Brook Valley Walk

More than 20 people from Parwich and Tissington met up in the Bletch Brook Valley with representatives from the National Park, to look at the wild flowers and find out about the elusive water vole.

Some of the best wild flower meadows are owned by Parwich United Charities (see photo below) and wonderfully managed by local farmers who over recent years through positive husbandry have brought back mixed hedgerows and increased the number of flowers dramatically. The reddish brown hue is bentgrass which follows the ridges of the ridge and furrow system in this field. One farm alone in the valley has over 200 mature trees, including 17 different species, this is considered remarkable for such a small area.

Thank you to Lynn Burrow, our local ranger for organising last night’s delightful free walk and to the experts, for their fascinating insight to the area and to all the farmers who look after this valley.
