We have received an appreciation of the late John Booth – former organist at Parwich and Alsop churches – from Reverend Jack Cooper, former vicar of this parish. Thanks to Stuart C for passing it on.
I was sad to be told of the recent death of John. Sadly due to distance and other problems, we are unable to make the funeral.
John was perhaps best known for his help at Parwich playing the organ, but much more so at Alsop. Many of you will remember that during my time as Vicar, John was a constant source of help to me in so many ways, not least his loyalty and reliability.
It is not very well known that John was not taught music, but taught himself. Actually he only played in two keys, which involved the Vicar (me) in sorting out hymns that could be transposed by John into those two keys. He spent hours and months ahead of the services, working out the hymns.
But what John may have lacked in technical ability, he more than made up for with his enthusiasm and his awareness of the “mood” of the worship taking place. He was acutely aware of when the hymn was being particularly enjoyed, with hearty singing. I would look down at him from my vicar’s stall and would see a tiny grin across his face, and a twinkle in his eyes as he returned my look, and he knew full well that I was going to signal that he should carry on with the chorus or last verse again. “Guide me oh” and ” Give me oil” were two such hymns, sung and played with great joy.
However, there were many occasions when John helped behind the scenes, namely with his skill as an “odd job man”. Many was the time he told me to “Leave it to him” when a job needed doing, e.g. fixing the well and truly broken and stuck lock on the main door to St.Peter’s. (That saved the treasurer a small fortune with a specialist locksmith.)
Thank you, John Booth for so many memories, and with much affection to Jeane for looking after you so well.

We want to offer our thanks to the Bluebell Inn for donating the first prize in the Parwich Strongman Raffle.
We do have a vested interest in that we won the prize and ate it last night!
We were very favourably impressed: pub staples, but well produced: local steak, lamb, sausage, chicken etc. A particularly nice touch was the surf and turf: our onion rings turned out to be calamari, even though these aren’t on the menu (caused some hilarity in the kitchen). The wine list has had some thought put into it too. All the staff at the inn were friendly and helpful, so well done all round.
Never eaten there before, but we’ll go back.

Rumour has it that the BBC programme Escape to the Country is in Parwich today. Apparently Fernlea is to feature as the ‘mystery house’ in a new episode to be broadcast in October.
Certainly it will get the property good coverage.

People in Parwich urged to nominate their favourite voluntary group for a 2012 Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service.
There’s still time to nominate your favourite local voluntary group for The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, the MBE for volunteer organisations, by getting your nomination forms in by Friday 30th September 2011. Please visit www.direct.gov.uk/qavs or email queensaward@cabinet-office.gsi.gov.uk
The Award, part of the UK National Honours system, was created by the Queen to mark the Golden Jubilee in 2002 and recognises the outstanding contributions made to local communities by groups of volunteers. It’s hoped the 2012 Awards will attract more nominations than ever, to help celebrate the Award’s 10th anniversary and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee next year.
In June this year, three outstanding groups in the East Midlands received this Award after being nominated by friends, family, beneficiaries or members of the public, but there are many more groups in the region which deserve to receive this recognition for their volunteers which can only be done by making a nomination.
The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service Main Award Committee Chair and former broadcast journalist Martyn Lewis CBE said:
“Volunteering groups make a huge contribution to people’s lives, often without praise for the incredible job they do. A prestigious UK National Honour such as The Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service can prove invaluable in so many ways to their ongoing success.”

This year’s Beyond Limits sculpture exhibition opened on Friday September 16th, in the gardens of Chatsworth House. There are 26 works on display, including pieces by Damien Hirst, Rene Magritte, Lynn Chadwick and Marc Quinn, and the exhibition runs until October 30th 2011.

23. Damien Hirst – Myth
The spot at the far end of the Canal pond is always reserved for something special. In previous years, we’ve had Marc Quinn’s statue of Kate Moss and a smaller version of Antony Gormley’s Angel of the North – and this year, Damien Hirst’s two painted bronze horses, Myth and Legend, looked spectacular in the afternoon sunlight. You’ll see Legend further down in this post.

We are looking forward to our Harvest Festival at 10am this Sunday, at St Peter’s. Why not come and join us with your harvest produce, and/or gifts for the Padley Centre? (For more information, see below).
If you would like to help decorate the church, then please join us on Saturday morning from 10am.
Even if you are not able to join us on Sunday, we would love to see you on Monday in the Memorial Hall from 18:30, for our Harvest Supper. Please bring your own drinks. Val is making meat and potato pie, and we shall be following that up with crumble and cream.
Harvest Supper tickets are available from Janet in the shop, or from Martin C (529).
This year, Stuart Chambers has kindly agreed to auction the harvest produce. All funds raised from the evening will go to the Padley Centre in Derby, which provides both a Day Centre and Direct Access Hostel.
You can also help the Padley Centre by donating items which will be of use to them. They can accept gifts of anything except pillows, duvets, electrical items and furniture. At the moment, they are particularly keen to receive any of the following items:
* toiletries (especially razors and sanitary towels)
* clothing
* textiles
* mugs
* cutlery
These can be left in church, or brought to the hall on Monday evening. If they need collecting, then please let Helen P know (362),

Last week of the season. A good season all round considering the membership we have. Two great wins to finish off.
Tuesday League
6 September – Home – Whitworth Park.
We managed to win all four games in the match. One very convincingly, one by just one point. The result was 84 to Parwich 60 to Whitworth. We have been hovering between sixth to fourth position in the league. This result and scores from other matches means we have finally finished fourth, one place higher than last year. A really creditable performance for such a small club.
Matlock Thursday Friendly League
9 September – Home – Matlock Bath
A final resounding win for us. We won all three of the doubles games and four out of the six singles. The score was 136 to us and 97 to Matlock. Matlock were ahead of us in the league, but with this conclusive win we have overtaken them. Again we have been around fifth to seventh in the league. Depending on other results we could make fifth.
We have one final game this Sunday before we put the green to bed for the winter. If you fancy a final look come down at 2.00pm. For a number of years the Club has had an invitation from Ashbourne Bowls Club to play indoor bowls during the winter period. This is very informal, but most enjoyable for those taking part. The season starts on Monday 10 October at 1.30 pm at the Ashbourne Club. If you fancy something to do on a cold winter afternoon then why not give it a try. Not sure where you can get such good entertainment for a £1 these days. Contact a member of the bowls club for more details.
All being well there will be further fabulous commentaries next year. Hope to speak to you electronically next April. Have good and safe winter.

Sunday 11th September – 10.30am
The Ashbourne Half has been running for 17 years, it is a challenging course. The race starts at the east of the town and the runners run south and steadily uphill for a mile before turning west on a level road behind the town for a further mile. They then enter the Dales passing through the village of Thorpe to the fields overlooking Ilam. They then run down into the valley of Ilam and then out and up on to Bloore Pastures. The course goes down towards Oakover Park and out on to the long level run in through Mayfield’s Hanging Bridge into Ashbourne. The race ends on the recreation ground.
The Fun Run has its fitness fanatics but quite a lot of the entries are true fun runners and include many well known local characters. The race is around the town and is about three miles. It follows the Half course onto and along Windmill Lane and then drops down past the old Cattle Market site to the War Memorial, around via the Duck Ponds and in through the back of the Recreation Ground finishing by the Pavilion. All finishers receive a medal and there is the Bob Hudson Trophy for the overall winner.
Parking – at the small car park just off Cokayne Avenue, by the Recreation Ground or at the main car park at Shaw Croft.

Derbyshire County Council are conducting a survey to gather residents’ opinions on the services that the council provides, and to find out how satisfied residents are with the area in which they live.
Although paper copies are being distributed, you can also opt to complete and submit the survey online. The closing date for this survey is October 31st 2011.

Visual Art Trails Weekend 10th – 11th September
The fantastic opening weekend when art takes over the town. The whole town becomes a gallery with more than 170 artists and makers showing their work in private homes, historic building, gardens, shop windows and churches. A great chance to buy affordable art, meet the artists and take a peek at some of Derbyshire’s best interiors!
Stay for the whole day and enjoy our FREE events in the evening.
Just opened in April 2011, the Ecclesbourne Valley Railway Wirksworth to Duffield line will be running Festival Specials, starting from 9:10am from Duffield with the last train from Wirksworth at 6:20pm.
Tickets for the Art and Architecture Trail are £5 per person with under 18s free. Tickets will be available on the day only.
