We have been asked to post the following message from Terry P so local people can attend the meeting if they wish:

I have received a letter regarding a meeting at Calver Village Hall at 7pm on Thursday 20th of January. The meeting is for people who have had dealings with the Peak Park Planning Authority and who feel aggrieved at their treatment, and finally the decisions that the Peak Park Authority have come to regarding planning applications that have been submitted. I believe that one of the things to be discussed is the non-uniform way in which different people are treated regarding planning.

Poppy Appeal

Many thanks to Mick E, who has given us the following message:

A total of £972 was raised for the Poppy Appeal this year;  this includes £145 that was collected at the service and the Legion at last year’s St Georges Day Parade.

Parwich Heights – Instalment Eight

Good news folks!

We know many of you have been waiting expectantly for the next exciting episode of Parwich Heights, the page-turning romantic novel written by you, the readers of parwich.org. We are delighted to announce Instalment Eight has been lovingly crafted and is published today for your reading pleasure!

This next chapter has been written by the incredibly talented authoress Bridget Jones. She lives locally (no doubt in a windswept cottage up on the hill) and has used her extensive local knowledge to weave elements into the story that will seem strangely familiar to people who know Parwich and its surrounds. We think this particular instalment is a cracker.

Click on the image to read this literary masterpiece…

Our authors and authoresses have lots of fun writing Parwich Heights. Once completed, we hope to publish the novel as a physical book for sale locally. We even have grand ideas to create ‘The Parwich Heights Trail’ for people to visit the places that have inspired the book.

If you would like to try your hand at an instalment of Parwich Heights, contact one of the Blog Team or drop a quick email to parwich@hotmail.co.uk. You can write a paragraph, a page or a whole chapter and we won’t give you a draconian deadline! If you apply, a friendly member of the blog team will allocate you an instalment and check with you that you are not too busy at the time. It’s a great way to develop your creative writing skills and you can use a pseudonym if you don’t want to be mobbed by the world’s press. Let your creativity run riot!

Look out Jilly Cooper – you’ve got competition!

Apologies from Georgie, but she has a funeral next Wednesday and will have to cancel the evening Pilates classes.

Sue H is Chair of The Parwich First Responders. Here is her first update of 2011.

My New Year’s Resolution is to try and give more information about Parwich First Responders as a group. Anyone who knows my hopeless typing and computer skills will realise that this will amount to quite a challenge for me.

However, it needs doing and as Chair (again, all those who know me will be aware that I once forgot that I’d volunteered/ been persuaded to take on this role for a whole year!!) I’m going to attempt to keep it up for longer than just January.

So here goes: Continue Reading »

Thank you from Hayley

Hayley would like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported her at the church Christmas fair.

We shall be publishing the answers to our 2010 quiz on Sunday evening. So if you would like to take part, this is your last chance!

We lost our lovely cat Funston (who was a wanderer by nature – he spent a lot of time in the church yard) to accidental anti-freeze poisoning. Apparently, anti-freeze tastes very sweet to animals and children, and it is fairly commonly ingested by both.

I Googled it, and it only takes an animal to walk through spilt anti-freeze, then lick their paws to be affected. I had no idea of this – I’ve merrily filled up with washer screen fluid in my car in the past, and not given it too much thought when it has slopped onto the driveway in the process.

I wanted to share this with people, to avoid this happening to another pet or, God forbid, a child. I’m very thankful to my neighbour who found Funston, and rushed him to the vet (I wasn’t home). We have some very kind people in this village.

Small laptop needed for Prof

Does anyone have a small laptop or iPad they could lend for a short time in case Professor Young, who is presently in hospital, could learn to use it.  If so, please contact Martin Compton on 529.  Thank you

(The blog team apologises for the lateness of this post. We are rather short-staffed this week, so anyone wishing a post to be made over the next few days is best advised to contact us as soon as possible.)

Circuit Training at the Memorial Hall resumes Thursday evening (6th Jan) at 6pm after the Christmas break.

You don’t need to have started from the beginning – anyone can join at any time, and come to as many or as few sessions as you like.

All abilities are catered for – perhaps now is the time to try to start working off that extra helping of Christmas pud?

More Urbanisation and Waste of Money‏

John H writes:

Just to let you all know the Derbyshire Dales District Council has started (as of Wed Jan 5) to repair the section of footpath 21 from Croft Avenue to the squeeze stile by the electicity sub-station, between Croft Avenue and Church Walk.

Wednesday morning’s work involved four men, two lorries, a trailer, a van and a JCB digger – and they haven’t started laying tarmac yet! They are turning the former 0.9m wide footpath into a 1.8m wide ‘highway’ – as far as the squeeze stile. This work is being directed by Footpaths and Rights of Way.

I have pointed out to the workmen that the continuing footpath is 0.9m wide to the south of the squeeze stile and has no surface at all where it runs north through 9 Croft Avenue, but was informed that 1.8m was what they were told to provide.

I THINK THIS IS AN UTTER WASTE OF PUBLIC MONEY. A single man with a spade could have cut back the encroaching grass covering the underlying footpath in a few hours. The team working on this could have been more usefully employed filling in the holes in Alsop Road.

The Footpaths and Rights of Way officer has just returned my call, and has stated that 1.8m is the standard adopted wherever possible when they are reconstructing footpaths – whether it be in a conservation area or not, across public land or private land. He is also aware of the condition of the footpath alongside Smithy Close – are we going to see more tarmac there fairly soon?

These piecemeal ‘improvements’ are eroding the character of Parwich as creeping urbanisation. Do we realy need 1.8m footpaths, kerbstones, road signs and street lights, or are they being imposed upon us by County Hall bureaucrats wasting our money when it would be better spent repairing roads, providing care services and education?

As part of the Limestone Way, footpath 21, even in its ‘grassy’ state prior to this morning’s activity, was adequate for use by ramblers. As a local path, for use by village residents, it could have been better, but it did not need to be wider. In poor weather conditions, most villagers would choose to use alternative routes to avoid the hazards of the lower section of the footpath which still remain.

Parwich Fit 4 All – Pilates

Rebecca J writes:

We have now received two very generous donations from the Horticultural Society and Parwich United Charities, and we are awaiting the outcome of a grant application to the Derbyshire Dales Health Development fund.

As a result, we can start to subsidise the 11-18 year olds classes; the cost will be halved to £2.50 for all young people who live in the parish of Parwich.

The start of the over 60’s class will need to await the outcome of the grant application, which I am told will be decided some time in the week beginning the 17th January. I am fairly confident we will get some, if not all of the money, applied for.

Due to other committments, the teacher (Tricia Durdey) has asked if we can start in February – so can all those who are interested pencil in Wednesday 2nd February for the first class and keep their fingers crossed! So far we have eight people interested and room for another four – so please let me know (318) if you haven’t already filled out a form, or told Sandra or Ann.

Treasure hunts: a visitor’s enquiry

We have received the following comment and e-mail from an imminent visitor to our area. If anybody is able to assist her, could they please contact the blog team at parwich@hotmail.co.uk.

A group of 22 family and friends will be staying at Uppermoor Farm, February 11th-14th, to celebrate my 50th Birthday.

I would like to organise a Treasure Hunt on the Sunday afternoon (13th) for my guests around the village of Parwich (on foot though, not chasing around in
cars). I have never organised a treasure hunt before, but think it would be an excellent way to get people out of the house to explore your beautiful village.

Pippa and Alan’s treasure hunt seems to have been a big success, and I was wondering if they would let me have a copy of their clues?

I hope this doesn’t sound too cheeky, and I am prepared to pay for the clues – or they could be our dinner guests on the Sunday night when we all go for dinner at a local pub.

Are Pippa and Alan still in Parwich, or has someone else taken over organising treasure hunts?

I look forward to your replies….
Many thanks,
Val (age 49 years, 11 months) 🙂

Christmas Tree Recycling

As twelth night approaches, we thought you might like to see the Christmas tree recycling information issued by the District Council:

If your property is on a garden waste collection round please put your Christmas at the edge of your property by 7am on your “green” collection day. You do not need a green wheeled bin,  just put your tree out on the correct day between Monday 3 and Friday 28 January 2011.

No trees over 5ft please. If your tree is taller than this, please chop it accordingly before placing it out for collection.

Lost Ring

Debbie W has sent us the following message:

Hi all,
I’ve lost a ring, I now think it may have happened on Christmas Eve either on my way, during or on my way home from midnight mass.

It is very distinctive: hammered silver with a brass ring around it. I’d love to get it back, so if people could keep their eyes peeled for it, I’d be very grateful.
