Parwich gardeners alert –
Barley straw for the strawberry patchAfter this nice drop of rain the strawberries are in flower and the fruit are developing well. Now is the time to protect the fruit from damage by the soil and slugs by laying barley straw around each plant. I have just acquired a bale of barley straw from a local farmer. I have far more than I need and if any Parwich gardeners want to protect their strawberries with barley straw, they are welcome to help themselves to my surplus straw – just come round to Flaxdale House with a black bin bag and I will gladly supply their needs.

Next BAG 2 SCHOOL collection
Posted in School on Wednesday June 12, 2013| Leave a Comment »
For information:
This is a great fundraiser for Parwich Primary School.
Bag2School are a non-profit making organisation who collect and remove for recycling unwanted clothing items etc. School is provided with collection bags which are distributed amongst families, who fill the bags (please use bin liners if you have lots of items) with their unwanted items of clothing, shoes, bags, belts, bed linen, towels, curtains, soft toys etc
(no bric-a-brac!).
The bags are brought into school on the morning of collection day, and Bag2School collect, weigh them and pay school, via the PTA, an amount depending on the total weight of items collected.
We would welcome members of the community to bring any unwanted clothes, shoes, bags, soft toys etc in to school by 9am on Monday 17th June ready for collection.
The more bags we collect,
the more money is raised for school funds!
Please ask friends and relatives if they have any suitable items to donate – in bin liners or similar is fine! If you are unable to bring the bags in to school, it may be possible for us to organise collection from you. Please speak to Karen Wigley or Sam Lomas, or contact Karen on 390253.
Many thanks for your help!

Hello Possums,
It looks like summer may have arrived, although no threats of hosepipe bans as yet. A good way to conserve water is to drink beer instead. Apparently you
can use bath water for your garden plants, but it’s a real chore carting them all up to the bathroom, such is life.
As alcohol awareness week gets under way, Derby City Council have produced a guide for the city’s winos:
- Apple-ation controlee White Lighting Cider – A crisp
no nonsense aperitif distilled from the sun ripened apples of Normandy harvested by a full moon.
- Chateau Buckfast Abbey – A pretentious full bodied wine with subtle overtones of meths and a nuance of b.o., available from selected corner shops only.
- Sanatogen Nouveau – A gutsy young wine with bags of potential, ghostly hints of Brasso, which linger on the palette. Perfect for laying down (after five or six bottles or so).
McEwans – super strength export lager, a must for the more discerning toper, a short cut to oblivion, serve chilled with a bin salvaged kebab or hamburger.
Remember drink sensibly.

Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club
Having been well and truly beaten in both Leagues last week we were looking to bounce back as they say this week. Well we bounced a little bit.
Matlock Tuesday League.
Away – 4 June – Wirksworth.
It was surprising how cold the evening was at Wirksworth particularly after the glorious day we had had. Wirksworth are usually a very strong side and this year proved no different than usual. We only managed to win one of the four games. Harry and Clara playing really well one 21 – 8, however wonder of wonders even Edith and Rick lost. They did come close however, losing 21 – 19 on the last end. The final result was a victory for the home team 75 – 67. Next week we are playing Hathersage. Let us hope we do not get beaten as badly as we did against their Thursday team.
- Next match – Home – Hathersage – 11 June, 6.30pm.
Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Matlock Park – 6 June.
Well at least we got back to winning ways in this League. We had fallen from the giddy heights of third place down to sixth following last week’s debacle. We again lost the doubles games two one, Clara and John H giving us a great win 21 – 6. Trailing by 48 – 43 after the doubles we again did really well in the singles games, although we only shared them three each. Our scores in the ones we lost, however, were considerably better than Matlock’s. We therefore came out winners by 127 – 111. We had three people come and watch us play today. One of them was Ron Twigg. Whenever the weather is half decent Ron will come and support us. Good on yer Ron.
- Next match – Away – Bradwell – 13 June – 1.45pm.
Club game this weekend with the open singles won brilliantly last year by Dot H. Can she defend her crown? Come along on Sunday at 2.00pm and see, you may even get a cup of tea.

Part Night Street Lighting So Far
Posted in 2013, Local government, Posts of Note, Roads on Tuesday June 4, 2013| 4 Comments »
Part night steeet lighting has now been implemented, that is some of our street lights are turned off between midnight and 5-30am. We will give our readers opportunity to review this more fully at the end of the year when we have had chance to experience it during darker nights, however in the meantime you can use the comments facility at the end of this post to share your experiences so far (good or bad).

the County Council planned to implement last month

Hello Possums,
Swaziland is cracking down on high flying witches by imposing a ban on exceeding an altitude of 150 metres, so as not be a hazard to commercial aircraft. Swaziland is rife with black magic, sorcery, necromancy and superstition; even witch doctors pay income tax. Non compliance of these restrictions may result in
confiscation of broomsticks, a hefty fine or a spell in prison. The witches’ union have condemned these draconian measures describing them as a right load of old warlocks.
At the “Ripley’s Believe It or Not” restaurant in Hollywood, U.S.A, head chef David Gordon’s signature dish of tempura battered tarantula is proving to be a big hit. The
abdomen is removed from the spider and the hairs singed off with a lighter, before being plunged in batter and deep-fried until crispy. ‘The Bugathon’ all-you-can-eat-buffet consists of scorpion, grasshoppers, locusts and cockroaches. The early bird special, served from 5.00pm – 7.00pm, is a generous helping of juicy earthworms with various dips to share. For more details go to the good grub website.

Our Weaterman in the Village says:
Major rain-gauge malfunction mid-week (maybe the deluge proved too much for it!), thus the measurements may be slightly inaccurate, but you get the idea – it was wet!
However, the good news is the current dry warm conditions are set to stay well into the coming week with a very pleasant week in prospect.

Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club
I suppose the wheels had to come off some time or other, it is a shame that all four came off at the same time in the same week!
Matlock Tuesday League.
Home – 28 May – Buxton Park.
It did not help matters as it was a Tuesday, its bowls, its Parwich, its raining. The playing conditions were really atrocious. Buxton Park had been in the top division for some years and were relegated last season. We knew that they had been playing well, but did not expect them to beat us so convincingly. Out of the four doubles games we only managed to win one, thanks again to Rick and Edith. Two of the games were close, but in the end Buxton won 75 to Parwich 63. At the moment we are very close to being bottom of the division, I suppose hopefully the only way is up!
- Next match – Home – Buxton Park – 28 May 6.30pm.
Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Hathersage – 30 May.
We could not carry on winning in this League, and we came a cropper with a vengeance against Hathersage. They again had been relegated from the top division and we were put to the sword. We did not win any doubles games and only managed to win one singles game. Suffice it to say Hathersage scored more than 150 points and we scored less than 100! Definitely we won’t be third in the League after this result. It’s probably just as well we lost as there could have been a distinct possibility we could have been promoted if we had kept up our winning streak.
- Next match – Home – Matlock Park – 6 June – 1.45pm.
No Club or friendly matches this weekend, but don’t forget if you want a ‘go’ on the green give a member a call and we will gladly have a few ‘ends’ with you. It looks like the weather is going to be a little kinder this weekend so what better than a meander round a bowling green.
