We are  lucky to have had this email from our very own Parwich Olympic Correspondent, Val S :

I went to the dress rehearsal for the Opening Ceremony last night. The opening scenes were shot in Parwich and then they move on to Belper. We are not allowed to tell – see #savethesuprise – but if you are going out, record it, trust me, it is worth it and it does start in Parwich!

I am off now for another day of slog and fun, so many languages, so many countries. The Park is packed and there is no public in there yet! I am working down here on the Help desk in the Main Press Centre (MPC) which together with the International Broadcasting Centre (IBC) forms part of a large media complex at the northern end of the Olympic Park to which there is no public access. The work is 24 hours a day as some-one is always awake somewhere! (more…)

This year’s Beyond Limits sculpture exhibition opened on Friday September 16th, in the gardens of Chatsworth House. There are 26 works on display, including pieces by Damien Hirst, Rene Magritte, Lynn Chadwick and Marc Quinn, and the exhibition runs until October 30th 2011.

Please click on each photo to enlarge it.

23. Damien Hirst – Myth
The spot at the far end of the Canal pond is always reserved for something special. In previous years, we’ve had Marc Quinn’s statue of Kate Moss and a smaller version of Antony Gormley’s Angel of the North – and this year, Damien Hirst’s two painted bronze horses, Myth and Legend, looked spectacular in the afternoon sunlight. You’ll see Legend further down in this post.

Four former railway tunnels are ready to re-open to walkers, cyclists and horse riders, following a major renovation project. Transport minister Norman Baker will officially open them on Wednesday May 25th. Update: Norman Baker will not be attending the opening after all.

The tunnels – Headstone, Cressbrook, Litton and Chee Tor – each measure between 400 and nearly 500 metres. They run from south of Bakewell to approximately three miles south of Buxton. Having been shut to the public when the Midland Railway closed in 1968, they have now been cleared out, repaired and resurfaced, with new lighting installed.

Nearly 1.5 miles of extra public access has been created. This extends the existing Monsal Trail, which runs from Bakewell to the edge of Buxton.

The project has been undertaken with the needs of cyclists in mind. Two new cycle hire businesses, at Blackwell Mill and Hassop Station, have been set up along the Monsal Trail to cater for those who wish to explore the new routes. Information panels and audio listening posts have also been provided.

Click here for more information, including maps and leaflets.

PARWICH.ORG has been contacted by Steve Garidis of the Electric Bicycle Network, which is part of a major initiative to create a network of electric bikes and charging points across the Peak Park, copying similar schemes in Switzerland and Germany etc. Steve says:

Have you seen cyclists whizzing past, seemingly unconcerned about hills and headwinds? If so, they are probably on one of the new electric bicycles available for hire from hotels, self catering cottages, campsite and cycle hire centres around the Peak District.

Part of the Electric Bicycle Network launched in the Peaks this Spring. This new technology means that pretty much anyone can get into the great outdoors on two wheels. Why not give it a try? Bikes are available to hire at Carsington Water and our own Rivendale Camping and Caravan Park in Alsop-en-le-Dale.”

To promote this new initiative, two electric bikes have been made available for free trial at Carsington Water, exclusively to PARWICH.ORG readers, in return for a review on this site. This offer is strictly on a first come, first served basis.

If you’d like to try one of these bikes out, and if you’re happy to write a review of your experience for PARWICH.ORG, then please e-mail the blog team and we’ll put you in touch.

Christopher sent the following to several people locally and has agreed to it going on the Blog:

Greetings from Nottingham –

I have mentioned to some of you that a couple of friends and I have formed a flute-cello-piano trio which will be giving a concert next Tuesday evening in Derby. The programme is entirely French – a trio by Debussy written when he was 18, a trio by Faure written when he was 77, and a rather sentimental piece by the flautist Philippe Gaubert (no, I hadn’t heard of him either, but it’s rather fun in a kind of pre-First World War way).

I think the concert is free, but you have to pay 25 pence for coffee and biscuits (see the attached programme).

This is something of a new departure for me, and it’s been great to find a very lively amateur musical environment here in Nottingham. If any of you can come that would be fantastic!

best wishes
Christopher Harrison

Tom in OK Magazine

There is an interview with Tom Chambers and Gethin Jones on the OK magazine website.  Also the feature contains several recipes: celebrity gossip and sexy food photos.

From the 19th of November to the 1st January Tom is appearing in White Christmas in the Sunderland Empire.  This is a great theatre from the heyday of Music Hall.

Rumor has it that there may be a coach trip being organised from Parwich to see White Christmas, so if you are interested watch this space or speak to Stuart.
