Alan Wood with the Arctic Star

Alan Wood is awarded the Arctic Star

Massive congratulations to Alan Wood who after nearly 70 years has now received the Arctic Star to acknowledge the vital role he, and many like him, played in World War Two.

The medal is awarded for any length of service above the Arctic Circle by members of the British armed forces and the merchant navy. Alan served in the merchant navy during World War Two on board the S.S. Fort Yukon in the Arctic convoys to Murmansk, Russia.

The Ashbourne News Telegraph included a quote from Alan:

I was only 17 when I joined the merchant navy in 1944. I spent three months on a training course for Lifeboat and Seamanship on the T.S. Vindicatrix, in Sharpness, Gloucestershire.

After this I joined the S.S. Demeatation in Grangemouth on the Forth, and we proceeded to London to take troops and supplies to the Normandy beaches.

On the second trip to the beaches, the ship was damaged by an inland shore battery with a number of casualties. We returned to North Shields for repairs.

The next ship I was on was the S.S. Fort Yukon, which was loaded with supplies bound for Murmansk, Russia. We went from Manchester up the Clyde, where we met with other vessels and formed a convoy.

I can tell you it was bitterly cold in the Arctic Circle, but I wasn’t frightened by it, I didn’t really feel it. After discharging the cargo in Murmansk we loaded the ship with phosphate bound for London.

Whilst we were sheltering in the north of Scotland overnight we heard that peace had been declared. My next trip as on the S.S. Llandaff, which went empty from Newport, Wales to Philadelphia to fetch supplies for American forces in the Pacific, but then the atomic bomb was dropped and the Japanese surrendered. So we boarded coal in Philadelphia for northern Norway instead.

I’m delighted to have been given this medal, but it’s a shame it took so long because many of my colleagues and friends who were also involved have long since died.”

To Mike and Kevin

The Blog Team would like to thank Mike and Kevin for all their work and support in the creation and development of our Blog site, parwich.org.

A changing Team

In 2007 there was a meeting to discuss ways of communicating the plans for developing a website to help communicate the progress of the planned new Memorial Hall. The possibilities of a traditional static website and a new fangled idea of a community blog were considered. Mike A was an experience blogger and he convinced everyone of the potential of a blog, though perhaps even he did not realise all the directions it could possibly take. At that meeting it was agree to set up two sites, a community blog and a more traditional static site for material that would not fit easily into a blog.

A very real advantage of blogging software is that it creates a site that can be administered by a group rather than requiring one person managing all up loading. Further it allows people to participate without extensive knowledge of HTML, the coding used in web design. Mike set about teaching a group of us how to use the blogging software. In early 2008 parwich.org was launched.  (more…)

Best Wishes to Dorothy Littlewood

Thank you to Mike R for collating this information. Best wishes to Dorothy in her new home from the parwich.org team, she will be much missed in Parwich and the surrounding area.

Dorothy

Dorothy Littlewood, late of Stable Cottage, has now moved to Delph near Oldham to be nearer her daughters. Dorothy came to Parwich about 25 years ago and taught piano lessons to many students in the area. She played the piano at Tissington Nursery for 17 years until her move. She returned to Tissington today to attend the annual Nativity Play and also to receive a retirement gift, a ceramic plate decorated with the inscription “Thank you from Tissington Kindergarten”. Dorothy must be well known to countless children who have attended the Nursery and it was a joy to her today to be greeted so warmly by the children.

Can you help the School with their a World War II ‘Evacuation Day’ in January. Were you an evacuee, did your family host evacuees, or are you a Veteran?

Hi Parwich Blog,

I wonder if you can help me find someone to come in and help Parwich School with our latest Topic on World War 2. I am the Key Stage 2 teacher (ages 7-11) and the children have been having lots of fun learning about the last world war. Lots of parents have sent in war relics such as ration books and helmets and we are now planning an Evacuation Day on Tuesday 14th January 2014.

It is going to be a very authentic day with dressing up and rations for lunch (well not too authentic!) It would be wonderful if we could invite someone locally to visit during the day who experienced World War 2, either as an actual evacuee or who was a child in a host family or even a war veteran. The children could interview the guest and then write about their experiences. This would be a fantastic opportunity for the children and I really hope there is someone in the locality who can help!

Please can you ask everyone on the blog if they know anyone?

Thank you so much and looking forward to seeing if we get any responses.

Very best wishes,

Kim Peatfield
KS2 Teacher
Parwich Primary School

This looks like being a fantastic day for the children. If you are able to help either contact the School directly or email parwich@hotmail.co.uk and we will forward your message. Also feel free to share any relevant experiences as a comment below or email them to us to create a separate post.

We have received the following email from someone researching the Parwich Webster families:

Hello,

(Updated 25th Nov 2013)

I am doing genealogy research for my friend who is directly related to the Webster families from Parwich area.

If any of your readers could assist me in any way, it would be greatly appreciated.

At this time, I have gone back many generations, including finding Joseph Webster who was a farmer working the Ball Croft Farm with his son Thomas, but who also was shown on the 1901 Census as being the Publican of The Sycamore Inn, Parwich and living there.

There are also references to members of the Webster family at Dam Farm, Dale End and 3, Gotham Farm, Parwich. There are references to the members of the earlier Webster families being farmers, cattle dealers and a butcher; presumably in the Parwich area.

I am particularlly interested in George Webster, born in 1919 and who served in WW2 [Welch Regiment], then returning to the UK from Klagenfurt, Austria in 1947/1948 with his Austrian wife Hermenegilde (more…)

Thank you to Hugh for letting us know about a new novel with Parwich connections:

I thought you might be interested to know that my son, Jasper has just published his first novel.

I am of course biased, but it is brilliant. It is a thinking person’s thriller, and a great page turner. It is set in Venezuela, where he spent many months of research, and it contains wonderful descriptions of that country and its people. Its main character, Harry Christmas, is a thoroughly disreputable, highly intelligent, impossible but irresistible, hopeless case. The book is the story of his flight to Venezuela pursued by the homicidal maniac son of a woman he has cheated on.

Michael Palin read it and wrote “Very funny very unpleasant yet very touching at the same time”.

It is called “A Bright Moon for Fools” and is available from Amazon, and is in Waterstone’s branches across the UK among other bookstores. It is published as an ebook and in hardback, by the Inside the Dog Press ISBN 978-0-9574681-0-8.

Clive Russell writes:

With some sadness, I received the news from a friend that Mrs. Anne Cooper, the wife of the Rev Jack Cooper, passed away yesterday (Sunday April 21st) after a long battle with cancer. She would be known and remembered by many older village residents as the former Mrs Annie Lyon of Knob Hall, who taught at Belper, Fenny Bentley and other local schools. She also served as Clerk to the Parish Council and was generally prominent in village life before moving to the North East following Jack’s retirement.

higwwfy

The Blog Team would like to extend its congratulations to our resident satirist Paul Burlinson, who has been invited to appear as a panellist on the next season of BBC1’s Have I Got News For You.

No stranger to the glamour of the television studio – his appearances on Channel 4’s Countdown in 2002 and 2004 have already gone down in broadcasting history – Paul was talent-spotted by HIGNY‘s executive producer, Ria Pollof.

“While taking a mini-break in your beautiful village earlier this year, I stumbled across Weedkiller Weekly, Paul’s wonderfully wry ‘sideways glance’ at events in the news”, says Ria, talking exclusively to PARWICH.ORG.

“We have been looking at ways to bring fresh new talent onto the show, and Paul’s cheeky sense of mischief was just the sort of thing we have been looking for. In this time of stringent budget cuts, we can no longer afford to pay the fees of many of our regular panellists, and as Paul asked for nothing more than a case of Marston’s Pedigree, a catering pack of pickled onions and a signed photograph of Dame Vera Lynn, we were only too happy to welcome him aboard!”

“Some of our production team were a little concerned about Paul’s somewhat provocative sense of humour”, Ria added, “but a top team of legal specialists will be on hand during the recording of the show, ready to intervene if his remarks get a little too close to the bone. We’ve had similar issues with Russell Brand, so forewarned is forearmed!”

Rumours that Paul is scheduled to appear on the same show as his great personal hero, Lord Prescott, could be neither confirmed nor denied as PARWICH.ORG went to press.

Janis Castledine

Janis Castledine (1952-2013)

Thank you to Mike & Gill for the following:

Janis Castledine, late of Newton Grange and Parwich , died aged 61 on March 7th at the Royal Derby Hospital after a long and valiant battle with a brain tumour. She will be sorely missed by her family and all those who knew her. Jan lived in Parwich only a short while, living in one of the cottages on Creamery Lane where she planned and created a fantastic cottage garden from a sad looking back lawn. Janis was also involved in other village activities and was a committee member of the history society in its early days. After she left Parwich she continued to be a regular visitor to Flaxdale House for weekly painting sessions with Gill Radcliffe and she never left without a walk around the garden to see what was in flower and to appreciate Mike’s latest gardening activities. In fact she was an inspiration to Mike and Gill when they first came to Parwich and planned their gardening improvements, and many of the plantings were with Jan’s advice.

Her funeral is to take place on Thursday 21st March at 10am at St Peter’s Church, Chesterfield Road, Belper with the committal at Markeaton at 11am.
