All is set fair for our two-hour (10.30-12.30) trip on Cromford Canal on Wednesday 9th July. Let’s hope we have a sunny day!

We have booked 20 ‘Seniors’ seats on the canal boat for a two hour trip (10.30-12.30) at a cost of £4.00 each. It look as though we may have two spare places, if anyone (male or female, all are welcome!) would like to join us please give me a ring on 519…

After the boat ride we plan to have lunch together at Wheatcroft’s Wharf, the café and bookshop beside the canal.  They sell soup, salads, quiches, paninis, sandwiches and cakes etc. Unfortunately they don’t take advance bookings, so we can’t make any firm arrangements.

There is a pleasant walk along the canal, and some of us may fancy doing that afterwards, or perhaps exploring the mill or the shops at the mill across the road.

The plan is that everyone will be meeting on the green at 9.30ish on Wednesday morning to arrange sharing lifts etc, aiming to leave Parwich at about 9.45, to give us plenty of time. There is a car park close to the canal.

Open Gardens 2014

With great weather, home-made scones and stunning gardens it was hardly surprising that we had a record attendance at this year’s open gardens. Garden owners and volunteers can be justifiably proud of their hard work and resultant success. The event is organised by Parwich & District Horticultural Society. The bumper proceeds will be used to underwrite the main Flower & Vegetable Show in September, and then the Society will allocate support for local groups and causes.

Here are a few photos I took around the Memorial Hall, but, if any readers have photos of the gardens, please do send them in to the Blog (parwich@hotmail.co.uk):

This evening Parish Annual Meeting included an excellent ‘Group and Societies Exhibition’ with very tasty cakes and other refreshments laid on by Catering 4 Parwich. Unfortunately the numbers of people enjoying it were limited.

Horticultural Trips

Yesterday 25 members of the PDHS visited two inspiring gardens near Northwich in Cheshire.

Thank you Glynis for this report:

The morning was spent at Bluebell Cottage Garden, tucked away over a narrow canal bridge in the heart of the countryside which presented the coach driver with his first challenge of the day. The island beds contained many unusual perennials some of which were available to tempt us in the attached nursery.

We then continued just a few miles down the road to Stonyford Cottage Garden and nursery. Here we enjoyed a tasty lunch, whilst the rain came down. Luckily there was a break in the showers and we could explore the beautiful, tranquil garden set around a series of pools. The candelabra primulas were fantastic.

The next trip is on Wednesday 16th July, combines a visit to Winterbourne Gardens in the morning. This is one of the best surviving examples of an Edwardian Arts and Crafts suburban villa, with a beautiful walled garden, colour themed borders, glasshouses, rock garden and stream side planting. A chocolate experience in Castleton on Tuesday?

On Tuesday (September 17th), a smallish group will be going from Parwich for an hour’s Chocolate Experience in Castleton.

We will watch a demonstration and get to sample some chocolates (which are really delicious!).

It’s rather short notice, but there are now a couple of places available, so please let me know if you’d like to come.

The Chocolate Experience costs £6.25 per person – and the lunch will depend on what you choose.

We are leaving from the green at 9.45am. I can offer two people a lift, if that helps.

For more info, or if you’d like to come, do ring me on 519 .

The Horticultural Society trip to Coton Manor and Kelmarsh Hall:

Today 17 members and friends travelled to Northamptonshire and enjoyed these gardens at their blooming best. The weather was kind and the gardens were beautiful. If anyone has any suggestions for next years trips please let Glynis know.
