Wakes over for another year…

As Wakes week draws to a close for yet another year the Carnival and Recreation Committee would like to give a massive thanks to YOU for attending and supporting our events. It has been an absolutely cracking Wakes (helped by the gorgeous weather) and we couldn’t do it without support from the Sycamore, Legion, Odd Fellows, fair, Notts DA and those unsung heroes (you know who you are) who do all the little jobs behind the scenes such as keeping our lovely village clean and tidy. We love you all for it and without it we couldn’t keep the events going.

See you all next year – now for the detox (after the glass of rose i’m just drinking!)

Ball race winners

1st George Laycock
2nd Charlie Jones
3rd The lovely Adam Raynor

5th Margaret Wood

A big thank you to everyone who supported the event.

Plants for Sale

I am selling a range of plants, mainly shrubs at present, including pheasant berry or Himalayan honeysuckle. All proceeds for the next ten days will go to the Carnival & Recreation Committee. If this works, I will try more plants sales for other village causes.

The plants for sale are by the road on the entrance to the drive. If no one is about just put whatever you would like to pay in the honesty box.

Wheels Fall Off

Oh dear, Oh dear it is not good when a few wheels fall off, but this week all the wheels fell off our wagon. Is it something to do with Wakes Week wobbles?

Tuesday League.

July 4 – Home – Matlock Golf Club.

Told you last week they were our Nemesis. We only managed to win one game out of the four. In the other three games we could not even manage to get to double figures! Pat B and Tony A came close but only got to 9. Dennis E and Sue A tried their level best, but failed 21 – 7. Dot H and Harry B unfortunately got even fewer and finished 21 – 6. Thank goodness we have Edith and Rick who got us our only win 21 – 10. Final score Golf Club 73, Parwich 43. Although we lost by 30 points we were 80 points ahead of the Golf Club so they are still well behind us in the league. 50 points to be precise so we will have to keep a reasonable perspective on the defeat.

As if playing our Nemesis this week was bad enough we are playing the top of the league next week. Let us hope we can put a few better ends together.

Next Match – Whitworth Park – Away – 11 July – 6.30pm.

Thursday League

July 6 – Away – Youlgrave.

I don’t think I have mentioned that there are some very devious, underhand, better players than us! It is difficult to convey how difficult Youlgrave green is to play on. (they probably think ours is unplayable as well). In the first half of the season we had beaten them by 21 points. What would happen on their green with the elephant bellowing like mad from beneath the green? Not a lot from a Parwich view point. John H and Audrey B Played like demons and only lost by one point. Our other two pairs however fell under the elephant’s spell. After the doubles we were 35 points down.

For once our singles players could not get us out of the jam. Only Dawn and Keith managed a win. The final score was Youlgrave 138, Parwich 95. For the first time this season we failed to get over 100.

Next match – Home – Baslow – 13 July – 1.45pm.

MONDAY NIGHT IS BOWLS NIGHT

Each Monday evening (starting 10 July) through to the end of August from 6.30pm – 7.30pm, bowls club members will be holding their weekly practice session down at Parsons Croft. Judging by this weeks display we need it. At the same time you are welcome to come and try your hand. We will be pleased to explain rules (not many!) and give advise. We have spare woods for you to use, all you need are flat shoes and a sense of humour! We look forward to seeing you.

PS. If you can’t make Mondays just let Tony (724) or John (455) know and we will arrange an alternative.

John B.

Plastic Pop Bottles Needed

We have brewed elderflower “champagne” and it is nearly ready to bottle.
If anyone has any empty plastic fizzy drink bottles, preferably 1 litre size, we’d be very grateful to have them. We need 25 in total, all contributions welcome!
Either give us a ring on 01335 216238 and we’ll collect, or drop them off at our house – Fernlea, opposite the village hall.
Thanks very much!

First Responders Wanted

18 – 74?

Did you know that if you are between the ages of 18 and 74 you could volunteer with Parwich First Responders?

After initial training you could join our small but friendly group to help us provide emergency medical cover for Parwich and the surrounding area.

Your commitment would involve regular training with the group in the village approximately every 2 months. You would also be able to cover two or more slots on our rota each week (or even none if you were too busy in any particular week). Slots are morning, afternoon , evening or night and you choose what you want to do and whether you would prefer to respond alone or in a pair.

You are welcome to join us at our next training session in September.

Please contact any member of PFR or ring Martin (529) or Sue (334). We would love to hear from you!

Butterfly Reserve Open Day

Hoe Grange Quarry

The first Open Day for Derbyshire’s first Butterfly Reserve has been organised for Sunday the 23rd of July from 11 am to 3 pm.

Members of Butterfly Conservation East Midlands, including Ray Walker (Hon Warden), Derek Brownlee (Hon Assistant Warden) together with Pat and Ken Orpe will be able to show visitors around this abandoned limestone quarry where already 24 species of butterflies have been recorded including Dark Green Fritillary and the Peak District version of the Brown Argus. It will also be possible to see the work that many volunteers have done to enhance the habitat so as to increase the biodiversity at the site.

Directions. From the cross road in the centre of Longcliffe village, proceed in a north westerly direction towards Slipper Low Farm and just after the brow of the first hill, take the first left, just before a bungalow, and then proceed down a limestone track and park by the entrance gates to the Nature Reserve at the end of the track (SK222562).
