caroline

I’m very lucky, as a relatively new gardener, to be the “custodian” of my granddad’s glorious oasis and it continues to pulsate with colour even under my novice hand.

This is my third Spring in the village and I wondered what other folks do to their daffodils and snowdrops, once they’ve gone over? I realise this may be as controversial as asking if you should have brown sauce or ketchup on a bacon butty, but any advice would be appreciated. I’ve been told to leave them, to cut them, and even plait the leaves… but what is the general consensus in Parwich?

Caroline G aka the Woolley-headed Gardener.

(P.S Brown sauce for sure!)

The Bowlers are Back

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Now I appreciate that you have been going through major withdrawal symptoms since the bowls season ended last year, however, your need is now about to be satiated with the start of the 2017 season.

As an opener to this season we held a club competition, the open singles on yesterday. The ladies in the Club appear to have a strangle hold on the trophy. Could they be the best players in the Club? On the basis of this, they most certainly are. Last year Dawn blasted everybody off the green. I keep telling you to come and watch the crème de la crème of the Crown Green Bowling scene, you missed a treat. This year it was Edith who showed us all how to play the game. I do not think the word imperious is overstating her domination of the green! Fabulous game Edith. Let us hope she continues to show this form in the league this year.

Our first match in League is this Tuesday at Parsons Croft. We are playing Matlock Park. Come down and see your ‘team’ do their stuff. We are away to Hazelwood next Thursday. Last year we got promoted to the higher division and only missed out on being Champions by a couple of points. Could be tough this year.

As always we are short of players and however hard we try no new members join. This year we have a couple of members not rejoining for various reasons. Your Club really does need you.

You will be pleased to know that there will be regular updates to keep you informed how your heroines and heroes get on.

April Film Night

fILM LARGE POSTER

A STREETCAT NAMED BOB

Based on the best-selling autobiographical novel by James Bowen, this feel-good film stars a cat named Bob.

Bob is a stray cat looking for somewhere warm to sleep. James is a street musician struggling to make ends meet.

When James and Bob meet, they forge a never-to-be-forgotten friendship; he found an injured cat curled up in the hallway of his apartment building, and he had no idea how much his life was about to change. James was living hand to mouth on the streets of London, barely making enough money to feed himself, and the last thing he needed was a pet. Yet James couldn’t resist helping the strikingly intelligent but very sick animal, whom he named Bob. He slowly nursed Bob back to health and then sent the cat on his way, imagining that he would never see him again. But Bob had other ideas……..

Friday Football News

WE’RE ON THE GRASS…….. YIPPPEEEEEE!!

‘Children’s Friday Football’ and ‘Adults Sunday Football’ can now be played on the grass.
This week our new mowing contract has started on Parsons Croft.

Can Friday football children please bring with them their football boots (if they have some, bring your trainers if not)… Shin pads are always preferred and will help prevent bruised shins.  Can children also bring with them any pairs of football boots that they have grown out of, so that they can be passed onto other children. If you wish to sell them please let us know….
For those of you who have not yet had the opportunity to come and watch the children train, then you are welcome to come down anytime.

ADULT FOOTBALL: The adult football got off to a flying start with 12 adults taking part, we probably need another 4-6 players to make it less tiring for us older ones!!.
We also had a large number of stand-by children who played their own game…Well done !  The younger children may want to play each Sunday themselves 6.30-7.30, but this will not be supervised, sorry!! Although you will be allowed to use the Friday Football equipment (balls, bibs, cones, etc) during this time.

Out with the old in with the new

The last scheduled 102 bus left Parwich on Friday 31 March.

bus-2

The New Bus

The service has been replaced by Derbyshire Connect, an on demand bus requested by phone  or email. Derbyshire Connect for some weeks has shadowed the 102 but is now the only regular service, At £2 single, £3.80 return, the fares are the same, and bus passes are recognised from 9.30am.
The service is already well used.
What is new is that the service can be used over a wide geographical area, roughly Ashbourne, Wirksworth, Onecote to the West and Hartington/ Newhaven and Ible to the North.
.Derbyshire Connect will run along the principles of a ‘Demand-Responsive-Transport (DRT) service − the first of its kind in Derbyshire.

This means it can be more flexible than conventional ‘turn up and go’ services. These generally have the same start and end destinations with fixed, timetabled stops along the way.

Journeys on Derbyshire Connect will need to be booked between a week and up to two hours before the time of travel. But because journeys are pre-booked, routes can be planned to cater to individual passengers’ needs meaning many more pick up and drop off points can be offered on different days of the week.

Bookings can be made by calling 01335 342951 or by email at bookings@derbyshireconnect.org.uk

Derbyshire Connect is initially being run as a trial for up to a year. It will be operated by Ashbourne Community Transport and serve villages north of Ashbourne and to the east as far as Wirksworth.

It will run 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday and 8am to 6pm, Saturday. There is no Sunday service.

Any kind of passenger will be eligible to use Derbyshire Connect for any type of journey, including current users of conventional bus services, community transport users, young people, older people, visitors and groups. It may also be used for non-emergency patient transport.

After the initial free travel period fares will be £2 adult single, £3.80 return, £1.20 child single, £2.40 return.

Gold Card holders will travel free-of-charge after 9.30am weekdays and anytime Saturdays. b_line2 cardholders will get 25% discount off adult fares and primary school pupils will pay the appropriate fare or travel free as an entitled student.

This is a six month experiment so do use the service to retain it. Importantly, do tell your neighbours who may not use the Internet.

Again ,thanks to the parish council who worked so hard to ensure a bus service remained a lifeline for our community, something recognised by Derbyshire County Council officers.

After Brexit is it Blexit?

News has just arrived in the post this morning of a totally unexpected side effect of Brexit that is threatening the continued existance of the Parwich Blog and thousands of other similar small sites across the country. The team are so shocked that we thought we should share this news with you immediately.

WordPress, the company which provides the web building and publishing tools and hosts the website are informing all their clients that they may have to shut down all UK based operations. This seems to be something to do with their servers being located at the TBS site in Frankfurt. Under EU law all data held on servers within the EU must be subject to legal control by the European Court of Justice. As the UK intends to leave the ECJ this will create a conflict and likely that UK sites can no longer be hosted.

Under the Terms and Conditions of WordPress’ service all data held by them becomes theirs so we would not be able to move to another service or reconstitute the site elsewhere without infringing WordPress copyrights. So it looks like we will have no option but to close down the blog.
