Calling Local Artists

Derbyshire County Council have sent the following:

Be inspired by Derbyshire Open Art Competition

Artists and aspiring artists are being urged to enter our annual Open Art Competition.

The competition has been running successfully for 33 years and is open to amateur and professional artists, including children. The resulting exhibition is supported by Tarmac Lafarge and the Friends of Buxton Museum and Art Gallery. Entries for the competition must capture an essence of why Derbyshire is special. The subject could be a landscape, a view of the artist’s home town, local people, representations of local legends or still life. Entrants can use most mediums, including oils, acrylics, watercolours, drawing, print, collage, manipulated digital imagery or three-dimensional work. The closing date for the competition is Saturday 13 June 2015. Our Museums Manager Ros Westwood said:

“Every year I look forward to seeing the entries in our competition and I am always impressed by the high standard. “The exhibition has been attracting a wide audience for over 30 years and I expect the same this summer. “I am delighted that we buy the winning entry to add to our art collection at Buxton Museum and Art Gallery which makes it available to view beyond the dates of the exhibition.”

Prizes totalling £2,400 – including a £750 first prize – are on offer along with the opportunity to display work at our Museum and Art Gallery in Buxton. Prizes will be announced at the preview evening on Friday 26 June 2015. Artists can submit up to two works which must be handed in between 10am and 4.30pm on Friday 12 June or Saturday,13 June 2015, to the Museum and Art Gallery on Terrace Road in Buxton. An independent panel of judges will select the winners of 11 prizes, including one for sculpture and also for work by artists under 22 and under 17. Visitors to Buxton Museum will also have the chance to choose their favourite while the exhibition is on − the Visitors’ Choice will be announced on 4 August 2015. This year the Visitors’ Choice Prize, supported by the Friends of Buxton Museum and Art Gallery, is awarded in memory of Peter Low who was a key member of the Friends for many years. The rules and entry form can be found on our Derbyshire Open Art Competition page. For more information tel: 01629 533540 or email: buxton.museum@derbyshire.gov.uk The judges’ selection including the winning pieces will go on display at Buxton Museum and Art Gallery from Saturday 27 June until Friday 11 September 2015.

Visitor Comments

A holiday cottage owner passed these visitor comments on to us:

Were it not for life’s constraints, we would move to Parwich like a shot. It is an idyllic village, lovely to look at, with friendly residents and abundant tranquillity. …… My favorite thing is opening the bathroom window wide to see ewes and lambs grazing right outside in the meadow. …………… We were made so welcome by the congregation of St. Peter’s Church, and we feel a part of the life in Parwich already (though at quite a distance). – visitors from Syracuse, NY.

Sssshhh Don’t let everyone know.

Day Trip to Two Gardens

Parwich and District Horticultural Society

Forthcoming Day Trip, Wednesday 10th June 2015

PDHS invite members and non- members to join them on their first trip of 2015. In the morning we will visit Stone House Cottage Garden and Nursery described by The Garden as follows:

‘A romantic garden set in an old walled kitchen garden. The area is only 1 acre but seems much larger- hedges divide it into different compartments and create diverse habitats in which to grow the vast selection of rare and unusual plants that thrive here.

Unusual brick follies adorn the walls and these in turn, are covered with a multitude of climbing and twining plants in which the garden specialises.

The garden acts as a shop window for the adjoining nursery. Here you can buy plants of almost all that grow in the garden – the list of shrubs and climbers includes many hardly ever seen for sale in this country’.

If you would like a preview of what will be there visit their website –

http://www.shcn.co.uk/garden.htm

We will then travel a short distance to Ashwood Nurseries owned by plantsman John Massey VMH. Here we will be able to lunch in their café and in the afternoon will have a guided tour of ‘John’s Garden’,which is described below, again further information is available from the website

‘John’s Garden’ at Ashwood Nurseries is a wonderful three acre private garden created by nursery owner John Massey VMH. Informal borders, island beds and woodland dells are set against the beautiful backdrop of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal. It is a ‘plantsman’s garden‘ that has an abundance of rare plants as well as many familiar favourites.

This is a garden for all seasons with magnificent collections of trees, shrubs, conifers adding to the interest all year round. There are many fine features including a stunning pool and rock garden planted with choice alpines and miniature bulbs, a colourful lewisia wall, an Anemone pavonina meadow and a unique succulent garden. A ‘hot’ border is home to an extensive collection of South African plants. Throughout the garden, urns and patio pots are imaginatively planted.

The garden has been featured on TV as well as in numerous articles in the national press and gardening magazines, and has been described by Carol Klein as ‘the most loved and looked after garden I’ve ever had the pleasure of visiting’.

We will leave Parwich (Pump House) at 9.00am returning about 6.00pm. The cost to members is £20 (non members £25), this includes coach travel and entry to both gardens and the tour. To reserve your place please send £5 (non refundable) to Glynis Drummond (tel 561) asap, the balance to be paid by 1st June.

Anyone got any Carrots?

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

The curate’s egg was very bad this week. Not only did we lose both our matches, but two of our wheels fell off.

 Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Away – Wirksworth – 28 April.

So you perhaps did not realise that not only do you have to be reasonably accurate, but you also need to eat a lot of carrots so that you can see in the dark. This green is very large but we started well. Dawn A and Dot H had a great win 21 – 17. Clara E and Harry B came so close. They were well on for a win reaching 20 very easily, however, as you aficionados of this great game know you need 21. Try as they might they could not get the final point and finished losing 20 – 21. This game had lasted over two hours and the final pairs did not get on to the green until 7.45pm. Edith then had a problem with her knee and hobbled round, but sadly lost with Rick M. The final pair were still playing and darkness was falling rapidly. Try as we might we could not find any miners lamps or carrots and the game was lost. The final score was Wirksworth 80, Parwich 69.

Next match- Home – Whitworth Park – 5 May – 6.30pm

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Hazelwood – 30 April- 1.45pm.

Hazelwood have played in the higher league for many years and the size of their club (150+ members) means they have a great pool of players to choose from. Anyway our doubles pairs battled all the way, but came second 60 – 35. Our singles players needed to play to the top of their ability and they did not disappoint. We won 4 out of the 6 games and went close in the other two, but the final score of 79 – 68 was not enough to swing the result in our favour. The final score was Hazelwood 131, Parwich 114. When you think that we only have 10% of their membership what a team we have.

Next match – Home – Baslow – 7 May – 1.45pm.

Don’t forget that we have another casual get together this Sunday at 2.00pm. All you need is a pair of flat soled shoes to have one of the best afternoons you can get. You don’t even need to eat carrots. You might need an umbrella though! Guaranteed great cakes and tea, rain or shine, come and join us.

Broadband Update

BT have resolved the capacity issues at the Parwich exchange and are now connecting new customers to broadband. (I was connected this lunch time.) Also for those not wanting to rely on phone lines W3Z are currently extending their coverage of our area so more people will be able to get a signal.

Face Painter Wanted

I’m doing a fund raising collection for Red Cross Week a week on Friday, and need a volunteer to paint my face as a tiger (before noon).  Is there any willing folk out there who could help me out?

Thanks so much!

Carnival & Recreational Committee AGM

The Carnival & Recreational Committee AGM is due to take place on Tuesday 19th May at Parwich British Legion. The meeting will start at 7.30pm prompt – everyone is welcome.

We have received the following from Parwich Royal British Legion:

On Friday 8th of May, Parwich Royal British Legion will be remembering the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. We would like to invite members and non-members to come and join us at the Legion for fifteen minutes as we mark this occasion.

At 7.45 pm we will gather outside the club and play Sir Winston Churchill’s famous end of war speech over loud speakers. This will be followed by the Act of Homage, delivered by Fred Knight, and we will conclude by playing the National Anthem.

We look forward to seeing as many people there as possible to help us mark this occasion, afterwards everyone is more than welcome to join us for a drink.

Many thanks for your continued support,
Carl (Club Chairman)

Parwich School in the News

Parwich Primary School are in the Ashbourne News Telegraph this week (click here to see the photograph on the paper’s website). They have raised £1,000 for the Isobella Peatfield Trust, which is

the total cost for the build and upkeep of a brand new playground to be built in a school, nursery or orphanage in one of the poorest areas of Sri Lanka for children affected by the 2004 Tsunami. The playground will be named after ‘Parwich Primary School’ and we are hoping, with Mrs. Peatfield’s help, to make lasting links with the school, nursery or orphanage where our playground will be built.

What an excellent achievement. Click here to see more photographs on the School website and for more details.

You can find more out about this excellent cause at the charity’s website and their Facebook page.

St. George’s Day Parade

With beautiful weather, all ran very smoothly. Starting with breakfast at the Legion the Parade, led by Doveholes Brass Band and made up of Parwich and other Odd Fellows, Wirksworth Army Cadets, the Brownies and local people made its way first to Parwich Hall. Here Charlie Fern outlined the history od St. George from early legends via his becoming Patron Saint of England in 1350 and via the Battle of Agincourt and much more upto his role with the Armed Forces and the Boy Scouts.

image

The St. George’s Day Service was taken by the Rev Andy Larkin, with Colin Sims talking on the 100th Anniversary of ANZAC Day (the Gallipoli Landings), Rachel Robinson Reading the lesson and the Vicar preaching on the text of ‘The Good Shepherd’.

The Parade moved on round the village with some much appreciated hospitality stops, before finishing again at the Legion for the barbecue.
