Paul B’s Weedkiller Weekly #73

Hello Possums,

A postcard has come to light, sent by Adolf Hitler during the First World War, confirming the removal of 19 of his teeth. The card, dated 21/12/16, features a picture of Berlin’s Landwebr Canal. It was fairly common knowledge that Hitler had a profound fear of dentists, but suffered, nevertheless, in the hope that the tooth fairy would make a significant financial contribution to the German war effort.

An American car mechanic, who was convinced, up until recently, that he was Elvis Presley’s love child, has been told that D.N.A testing has proved beyond doubt that he is in no way related to the star. His mother claimed to have had a one night stand with the legendary singer many moons ago, and became pregnant by him as a result. The mechanic’s craving for cheese burgers and peanut butter sandwiches, and an uncanny similarity in singing voices, has been put down to pure coincidence. The poor fellow is inconsolable with the findings, and is trying to come to terms by going into hiding at The Heartbreak Hotel, down at the end of lonely street.

An inebriated burglar, who fell asleep on the lavatory of a house he had broken into, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison. After passing sentence, the judge told him “Just thank your lucky stars that it wasn’t Oscar Pistorius’s house“.

Full Steam Ahead!

Two of Derbyshire’s steam beam engines are being opened to the public for the first-time this year.

Middleton Top engine house and Leawood Pump steam beam engine are being opened on the Easter weekend of Sunday 20 April and Monday 21 April.

Middleton Top engine house based on the High Peak Trail is the world’s oldest original working rotative beam engine and will be operating from noon until around 5pm. And the nearby Leawood Pump steam beam engine on the Cromford Canal will also be operating from 12pm until about 5pm.

Admission to Middleton Top engine house is £2.70 and £1.30 for concessions and entry to Leawood Pump House is free.

Visitor centres at High Peak Junction and Middleton Top will also be open seven days a week from Easter until September, where visitors can find out more about heritage and wildlife and what to see and do. Attractions include an audio tour at High Peak Junction workshops visitor centre, bringing the history of Cromford Canal and one of the oldest surviving railway workshops alive. There is a £2.70 charge for the tour (Concessions £1.30). Or why not hire a bike from Middleton Top and follow the path taken by the railway wagons until 1967 down the high peak trail towards Hopton tunnel & beyond?

The centres also provide information, maps, books and light refreshments.

For more information call 08456 058 058 or visit www.derbyshire.gov.uk/countryside (opens in a new window)

Easter Rubbish Collections

Derbyshire Dales District Council have issued the following update about Easter rubbish and recycling collections:

Easter waste and recycling collection changes

Derbyshire Dales residents are being warned to expect changes to their usual waste and recycling collections over Easter.

The District Council’s contractor Serco will work as normal on Good Friday (18 April), but there will be no collections on Easter Monday (21 April).

It means collections that week will be one day later than usual and will include a Saturday collection on 26 April.

Looking further ahead, the same applies in the weeks beginning with Monday 5 May and Monday 26 May, both of which are also Bank Holidays.

The District Council is urging residents to use the online search at www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/waste to see which containers to put out and download a collection calendar.

Local people can also sign up for a free e-newsletter at www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/enewsreg to be kept informed of any changes to bin collections.

This means that our Grey bin and food caddy collection this week is on Wednesday as normal, but that next week’s recycling (Green bin, Blue bin and food caddy) collections are a day later on Thursday 26th April. Local collection days are shown on our Diary page here at parwich.org.

Not a bad way to start the week!

Our Weatherman-in-the-Village says:

Still having problems with the rain gauge. It looks like it was working OK on Monday, but I know we had some rain yesterday which wasn’t recorded. I think it’s the reed switch in the gauge so it might be out of action for a while. Let’s see.

The week ahead looks pretty good until Thursday or so, but then I always feel that in the UK we have 4 days or so where predictions are reasonably accurate – beyond that is “educated” guesswork. With our country being close to the Atlantic, the Gulf Stream, and the solid land mass of Central Europe, there are just too many variables to make long range weather forecasting anything other than statistical observations.

Let’s keep our fingers crossed for the Easter weekend – I have left the garden furniture under wraps until this weekend. Last year a week after I got them out we had a foot of snow!

The first swallows arrive

The swallows have put in appearances in both Parwich

Summer must be on the way. Our first male swallow returned to Blanche Meadow on Thursday April 10th – unfortunately I was away and missed it. With luck the rest should follow shortly and I’m sure JFS will be around to record them so watch this space.

Patti

and Alsop en le Dale

Just spotted my first swallow of the year up at Alsop, exactly one day before my first sighting last year. Male, alone for now, no doubt leading the charge ahead of the others (and the house martins of course). Swifts to look forward too around the end of the month.

I never cease to be impressed by the epic achievement of these birds in navigating the long and arduous flight from Southern Africa. And what a joy it is too, notwithstanding the rainy evening.

To celebrate, I’m re-posting this:

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Now I know there important days in the year like Christmas and your birthday, but none get close to the day the bowls season starts. What an event. How did I miss its’ coming I hear you cry. Well you did and what a coming it was.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.

Away – Wirksworth – 8 April

I am not sure what Edith takes, but whatever it is we all need some! We do have a break over the winter, but Edith must practise in her loft. She and Rick ( who did play very very well also ) won their game 21 – 7. Although we only won one more of the remaining three games the two we lost were by one point and three points giving us a win by 80 points to 68. A really good start to the season. In all honesty, however we do usually start well and fade as the season progresses. Let us hope we can buck the trend.

Next match – Home – Bakewell – 15 April 6.15pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.

Home – Wirksworth – 10 April

Fixtures computers seem to have a way of sorting things out in odd ways occasionally and we played Wirksworth twice in the same week. The format for Thursday is three doubles games first to 21 and six singles, first to 15. We do tend to have a bit of a problem in the doubles games. However, although we did not score as many points we did win two out of the three. Audrey and Dennis leading the way, with John and Liz coming a good second. 50 points to 45 to Wirksworth.

In the singles we won all six games, what a team!. The best being Tony who won 15 – 3 and Harry 15 – 4. The overall score was 90 to 49, giving us victory by 135 to 99.

Next match – Away – Chatsworth B – 17 April 1.15pm

Two good wins, but next week I have a feeling we will come down with a bump, we will see. As every year we are in desperate need of new players. Please come and support the only major active club in the Village.

John B.

“Long Ride To Victory”

Thank you to Graham J for this report of an intrepid group of local cyclists in South Africa:

A few weeks ago, 4 intrepid Parwich cyclists crossed the equator to meet up in glorious Cape Town and take part in the World’s biggest cycle race – the “Cape Argus”. After having trained through the depths of a Peak District winter, it was pure joy to be transported into high summer overnight, with the prospect of a legendary bike race to boot!

Paul B’s Weedkiller Weekly #72

Hello Possums,

Police are hunting a man, who attempted to rob a store (in Maldon, Essex) at gunpoint, wearing a Rod Stewart mask. The man escaped empty handed after a member of staff hit the alarm button. A local C.I.D Inspector told us that a similar modus operandi was adopted some years ago by a man wearing a Gordon Brown mask, who brazenly carried out a massive gold bullion reserve heist, and is now believed to be a fugitive living in Scotland.

A man, walking his dog by a golf course, was shocked when the animal returned from undergrowth with a badly decomposed human arm in its mouth. A club spokesperson said “We do have one or two dog legs on the course, but a human one is definitely a first”.

Apparently a Teddy bear was one of the more mundane items stolen from the House of Commons in recent years, and was thought to have been the unwitting victim of a honey trap.
