PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

So, four weeks into a new season and still no new members!! Where are you all? Anyway here goes another waste of space.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Home – Chatsworth B – 29 April

Having done really well last week with a bit of a scratch team because of players being away we were back to nearly full strength this week. Rick and Edith were back to their imperious best winning 21 – 10. We managed to win two more of the remaining three games and only just lost the other. The final score was Parwich 82, Chatsworth 57. Not a bad result when you consider the maximum points you can score is 84.

We will certainly lose in the next few weeks, but at the moment WE ARE STILL TOP OF THE LEAGUE. The chances are it will be next Tuesday as we are playing a very very good team with lots of members.

  • Next match – Away – Buxton Park – 6 May – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Whitworth Park – 1 May

We were doing reasonably well in this league, but we came unstuck with a vengeance this match. Whitworth were top of the league and after their display against us will no doubt keep them there. Those of you who read this twaddle will know we very often struggle in the doubles and this week was no exception. We did get close in one game, but were handsomely beaten in the other two. Whitworth 63, Parwich 34. We did fair a little better in the singles, but again lost 81 – 71. Rick M and Edith (no surprise) winning, with John H only failing by one shot. The overall score 138 – 105 our worst result so far.

Next week we have a ‘blank’ week so will be playing a Club tournament. Why not come and have look.

  • Next match – Club match – Square Robin – 8 May 1.00pm Parsons Croft.

Hello Possums,

Escapee sighted in Derbyshire: A six foot tall wild bird, native to Australia, with lethal claws and the capability of reaching a speed 45mph, may be in the vicinity of Parwich. A local man claims to have spotted the bird in his rhea view mirror whilst driving into the village on Friday.

An opportunity has arisen within the Royal Household for someone capable of specialist antique cleaning and a willingness to travel to the numerous royal households around the country. A salary of £14,400 is up for grabs, which includes food and accommodation. Job seeker, Prince Edward, has already submitted his C.V.

Ashbourne firefighters on strike

The Fire Brigades Union (FBU) has announced further strike dates following a national ballot for strike action last year.

Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service (DFRS) have said that FBU members will be striking on Friday, May 2, 12 noon until 5pm, Saturday, May 3, 2pm until 2am on Sunday, 4 May, and Sunday, May 4, from 10am until 3pm.

During times of industrial action, DFRS will continue to provide an emergency response service at a reduced level.

The Fire Service are asking members of the public to take extra steps to reduce the risk of a fire breaking out in their home and to take extra care when driving on the roads during times of industrial action. They DFRS say:

I would urge everyone to visit our website, www.derbys-fire.gov.uk where there is a wealth of fire safety advice and information available.

If you do have a fire, do not try to tackle this yourself, get out, stay out and call 999, we will respond.

The Ashbourne News Telegraph contains more details.

New Resident, New Business

Hello

Having spent the last two years travelling between Parwich and Wiltshire, Stuart and I will finally be moving to Parwich in August this year.

I have been teaching primary aged children with specific learning difficulties (dyslexia) from home for the last 7 years, having taught in school for 10 years before that, and will continue working from Spenedge from Summer this year. I am qualified, very experienced and passionate about working with children and supporting their parents. The one to one teaching is tailored to the individual child’s needs and adapted to his or her own pace, learning style and strengths. I create an environment where the pupil feels at ease and happy with an emphasis on improving self-confidence as well as basic skills in literacy and maths.

I am very happy to chat about a child’s needs and although sad to have to say goodbye to my current pupils, am looking forward to meeting new pupils and their parents in the near future.

I can be contacted on 07925 274265/ 01793 813666/ ronacampbell@btinterent.com and on 390653 from August.

Peak Park Photography Competition

Get inspired in the Peak District National Park for photo competition

Teaching a child to ride a bicycle on the Tissington Trail, taking part in a Duke of Edinburgh Award challenge on the Peak District moors, practicing watercolour painting at Monsal Head – show people discovering the joys of national parks and you could win a national prize.

This year’s UK National Parks photo competition (April 14 to May 28) focuses on the young and the young at heart with the theme “Britain’s Breathing Spaces: Space to Grow.” Photographers of all skill levels are encouraged to take part.

The photograph must be taken within one of Britain’s 15 national parks.  UK National Parks partner outdoor gear specialists Merrell are offering a prize of top-quality footwear for the best picture.

Jim Dixon, chief executive of the Peak District National Park Authority, said: “When we think of the future and who will look after our National Park family in the decades and centuries ahead, we think of young people. We might think of the child catching his or her first fish, but there is, too, the grandparent who is teaching that child to fish and instilling a respect and love of our naturally beautiful landscapes.

“This year’s competition theme gives plenty of scope for some super images and I hope the Peak District’s talented photographers, both amateur and professional, are inspired to enter. A visit to the Photo Gallery inside Bakewell Visitor Centre, which shows magnificent work by a group of local professional photographers, is a good starting point for inspiration.”

For ideas on what to do in the Peak District National Park visit www.peakdistrict.gov.uk/visiting which has information on events and activities and more.

More information on the photo competition, including terms and conditions, are at www.nationalparks.gov.uk/spacetogrow The deadline for uploading entries is May 28.

The photographs must be of people getting inspired or actively enjoying themselves within one of the 15 UK National Parks – Brecon Beacons, the Broads, Cairngorms, Dartmoor, Exmoor, Lake District, Loch Lomond & Trossachs, New Forest, Northumberland, North York Moors, Peak District, Pembrokeshire Coast, Snowdonia, South Downs or Yorkshire Dales.

The winner will receive his or her choice of footwear from outdoor expert Merrell. The competition is also supported by Natural Resources Wales, and Natural England.

The annual photo competition is part of a series of events culminating in National Parks Week, which takes place from July 28 to August 3.

Winning Run Continues

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Now the scary thing is that we are playing quite well and have only lost one match so far, and that was a close call.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Away – Matlock Bath – 22 April

As I mentioned last week we are so short of players that Audrey B had to step in and help us out and she helped us out with a vengeance. Audrey playing like a demon and just about assisted by John B won the game 21 – 13. Dennis and Clara E also came up winners 21 – 17. Rick, without his usual sidekick Edith, won brilliantly with Dot a fabulous substitute playing equally like a demon. Our remaining pair only just lost their game 21 – 17. The overall score therefore was Parwich 80, Matlock 62. Not bad for a scratch team.

To cap it all we are still miraculously TOP OF THE LEAGUE!

  • Next match – Home – Chatsworth – 29 April – 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Matlock Park – 24 April

Tea & Cakes in the Churchyard

Thank you to Mike H for this account and photos of today’s ‘Tea & Cakes’ in Alsop Churchyard:

image

Despite being short-staffed, volunteers at Alsop-en-le-Dale manned a stall brimming with cakes, jams and chutney today in the churchyard of St Michael & the Angels. Nothing could compare with basking in the spring sunshine supping a refreshing cuppa and tucking into a slice of home-made cake.

If you missed today, there will be three other opportunities on upcoming bank holiday Mondays. This year they will be on 5th May, 26th May and 25th August. We recommend you make a note in your diaries!

We are the Tops!

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

What is the expression, ‘you can’t win them all’, well at least we won one of our two matches this week and the Thursday match went down to the wire as they say.

Matlock Tuesday bowls league.

Home  – Bakewell – 15 April

Another good result following on from last week. Harry and John B were the best pair this week winning 21 -12. Rick and Edith both played really well and although the game was close, 21 – 16 to us, the outcome was never in doubt. Dawn and Sue provided us with our third game win coming in 21 – 15. Although we lost the final game sufficient points were accumulated to provide us with an excellent win 74 – 64.

Just as an aside, the league secretary is a bit of a stickler for having things absolutely correct. One team made 6 small errors on their score sheet and were fined 60 points. They had only won 56 in the game so they are now on minus 4. The next transgression we hear will result in deportation.

Because of holidays next week we are 4 players missing and we are having to call on everybody and anybody to make up the team. Don’t get too close to a Bowls Club member or you will be kidnapped to play for us.

STOP PRESS:- Details of the scores from the first two matches have just been received and PARWICH ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE. Keep it to yourselves we don’t want to get too carried away.

Next match – Away – Matlock Bath – 22 April –  6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.

Away – Chatsworths – 17 April

Normally, as you avid readers of this riveting editorial will be aware, it has been known that we struggle in the doubles games in this League, well not this week. John H and Dennis had a really good win 21 – 11, and Ian and Harry also came up trumps with a 21 – 13 win. Although we lost the final doubles game we came out leading in the match 54 – 45.

In the singles we got off to a good start winning the first two games, but apart from Tony A’s excellent win we did not accumulate enough points to win overall. In the last match it looked as though a possible draw might result, but it was not to be and we finished 121 to Parwich, 124 to Chatsworth. A really close and most enjoyable match.

Next match – Home – Matlock Park – 24 April 1.15pm.

Why not come down to Parsons Croft and either have a go or support us when we play.

John B.
