Matlock to Chesterfield Road Closed

Derbyshire County Council have notified us of the following:

Road closure due to flood

22 October 2013

The main Chesterfield to Matlock A632 road remains closed due to flooding which has caused a wall to collapse.

The road has been closed between Acorn Ridge at Walton, Chesterfield, and Span Carr Crossroads since yesterday (21 October) lunchtime.

Continued rainfall and water running from the hills is hampering attempts to clear the debris and establish and fix the cause of the problem, which is thought to be a blocked culvert.

We have knocked down part of a retaining wall on the opposite side of the road to relieve some of the flood water. Diversions remain in place and motorists are being advised to avoid the area if possible.

Alternative routes are available via Wingerworth using Langer Lane, Birkin Lane and Span Carr Crossroads or by using the main A619 route through Baslow and Bakewell.

Take Care on the Roads: Tuesday 22nd

The rain has continued over night and Cheryl sent in the following warning first thing:

Be careful this morning everybody – the road conditions are dreadful. There is a lot of standing water and it’s deep in places.

Do keep everyone updated on road conditions and any specific black spots, by adding comments to this post.

Hello Possums

bellOYEZ! OYEZ! Derby’s town criers have been criticized over their exorbitant call out charges.

imageThere now follows a portly political broadcast on behalf of the N.F.H. (No Fracking Here) Party:

Hello good folk of Partridge,
Lord Scottpress here,

I am synthetic to your constellations regaling the distraction of shale gas from areas of upstanding national beatification. As you know if Labour were still in power there would be none of this fracking nonsense as we were more than culpable of producing our own natural gas. Anyway I digest so downwards and side ways. You may join in the fracking debate in the House of Lords but please avoid these times:

Hello Possums,

Shale Gas in the Peak District?

imageThe Government has listed areas with potential for shale gas extraction. The website wrongmove, set up by Greenpeace has a facility to identify from your postcode whether your house is in an area potentially included.

Unsurprisingly with shale beneath us, the site, in response to our local postcodes, suggests we are in one of these areas. However this does not necessarily mean that there will be any shale gas extraction and associated fracking here. For any new extraction sites there would have to be a long process of identifying commercial viability, getting agreement from landowners and/or the holders of mineral rights and obtaining necessary planning consents.

So there are no concrete plans for our area, and nothing could happen quickly, however Greenpeace consider it worthwhile for objectors to register their objections sooner rather than later.

The back route to Hartington via Biggin will be closed in High Cross above Hartington Youth Hostel between the 21st and 22nd October. Click here for more details.

Our Weatherman in the Village says:

Not a particularly pleasant week in prospect. The calm autumn of recent weeks has broken, and a pattern of wet and windy weather looks like it has settled in. The only saving grace is that the temperatures are not too low. Personally I would sacrifice the mild temperatures for some crisp clam and cold autumn conditions!
