Our Weatherman in the Village says:

It looks like we’ve seen the last of the snow for a while, but we certainly got a lot. I didn’t manage to measure the total depth (did anyone record it?) but it looked over a foot to me. On that subject, of course the rain gauge will only measure liquid water so although the measurements were zero for most of the week, it doesn’t mean there was no precipitation.

The coming week looks like being relatively mild, windy and unsettled generally. After a week of difficult driving conditions, it will make a pleasant change.

Thank you David how encouraging, your cheque is in the post.

Splendid news for the economic woes of Ashbourne, a real shot in the arm for local commerce. The impending arrival of … Wait for it … drum roll please maestro, … … … – ’The 99 pence store’ – guaranteed to revive the most jaded of market towns. The sheep drovers will return, the ancient cobbles will once again ring with the clatter of horses hooves, the market will become a magnet for buyers from far and wide, the ancient ale houses will overflow. Actually joking apart the town was so quiet on Thursday the traffic warden ticketed his own car.

Thank goodness the bins have finally been emptied, one more week and I think ours would have become scheduled ancient monuments and most likely would have been investigated by the ‘Time Team’ in years to come.

A wee bit further afield three Colombians, who attempted to rob a store at 2.00 in the morning, were forced to abort the raid Continue Reading »

Send us in pictures of your pet if you think they should be famous!

Last of the snow?

A fair dollop of snow landed on Parwich last night, adding to the unmelted layer already on the ground. The morning saw many residents reaching for their shovels.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

At the time of writing (5.30pm on Saturday) the Parwich weatherlink (kindly made available by Graham & Amanda) says the temperature is 1 degree celsius. We are expecting a bit of a thaw mixed in with rain over the next few days. The village’s fondant icing appearance is likely to change.

Have we seen the last of the snow? Probably not. There is still plenty of time for more of the fluffy stuff. In the meantime, enjoy the warmer temperature!

Methodist Service Cancelled

Thanks to Val K for letting us know that the Methodist Service for scheduled for tomorrow 27 January, has been cancelled

Bins updated!!

A further message from DDDC has just arrived:

For the avoidance of doubt, not every property in the Dales gets a double collection next  week: only those properties where collections have been missed to date.
So, the many  Dales residents who have been lucky enough to have their usual collections  through the snow will just get their regular collection next  week.

Bins!!

We have received this from Deryshire Dales this morning:
Derbyshire Dales  bin collections update:
To enable us to catch up with this week’s missed bin  collections caused by weather disruptions, please note we will be collecting  food, household waste and garden waste AT THE SAME TIME next week, from Monday  28 January, on residents’ normal  collection day.
So, as a one-off, if we have missed bins because of the  weather, we’re asking residents please to leave out food,  household waste and garden containers together next week.
  • Properties that did not receive a recycling collection on   Monday 21 January because of snow should get a collection this   weekend.
  • Any recycling collections not possible this weekend will   be completed on the next scheduled recycling day.
  • Any other recycling collections missed this week will now   be completed on the next scheduled   collection day.

Looking to Buy Oil?

I am planning to buy some heating oil in the next couple of weeks – Peak Oil have quoted me 62.9p per litre for 2000 litres, but if I can increase my order to 3000 litres, the price will drop to 60.9p.  Anyone want to join in?

Young Voices

Parwich Primary School has reluctantly decided to withdraw from the Young Voices Concert tomorrow evening. Please open this letter for further information regarding refunds for purchased tickets/t-shirts.

Are you having a new year clear-out?

Don’t throw out your old electricals. Donate them to Encore Re-use – Ashbourne’s furniture reuse project.

At this time of year, we tend to cast our minds to having a good old clear out. You’ll probably find that some of the things you want to get rid of are old electricals. Things that still work but perhaps you’ve replaced them with something more up-to-date. We tend to stick old, working electricals in a cupboard somewhere, up in the loft or stashed away in the garage. They sit there until they’ve become obsolete or worse still, eventually get thrown away.

Encore Re-use in Ashbourne is a furniture reuse charity that is crying out for good quality, working household electricals and appliances. Donate your vacuums, kettles, radios, microwaves, fridges, washing machines and other working items that you no longer use to the project and they will find them a new home.  Everything’s tested for safety before being sold from their showroom on Henmore Trading Estate on Mayfield Road at very reasonable prices. Families on low incomes, students or just people on the look-out for a bargain can benefit – anyone’s welcome. Continue Reading »

Waste Collection

We have received the following communication from Derbyshire Dales District Council:

By working yesterday (Sunday), crews managed to catch up with most of last week’s snow-enforced missed collections. Any remaining areas missed last week will get a “double” collection (household waste and garden waste) this week – these households should please leave out household and green waste containers, plus food caddies, for collection.

Paul B’s Weedkiller Weekly #14

Hello snow persons, I hope you are all sitting comfortably in your igloos this morning. It looks like Parwich is peppered with giant white molehills. By the way, gentlemen – if you ever find yourself as a guest of an Eskimo family for the night, you will most likely be offered the delights of your host’s wife for the duration, and to decline is definitely bad form. The major stumbling block is being able to tell them apart, so beware.

Midlothian county council is to mark “Love Your Library Day” on Feb 2 by staging free pole dancing classes to encourage people to use the facilities. Derbyshire Dales will be joining in the initiative with their mobile library service. Interested parties are invited to come along to the library on its next visit to the village. Suggested attire: Lycra leotards and non-slip ballet pumps; ladies’ outfits to be advised.

The parish council has been advised that chestnut trees at Nethergreen are diseased and pose a risk. Two of the trees are due to be felled early in 2013.

The parish council would like to receive opinions from Parwich residents regarding future proposals at the Nethergreen area, over a period of 4 weeks, from 7th January 2013.

The three options are:
1. No replacement trees at Nethergreen
2. Trees just on one side at Nethergreen
3. Avenue of trees on both sides of the road at the Nethergreen area

Cheryl W reports:

Just to let you know that the road to Ashbourne are not good – even the A515 from the Bentley Brook (as at 8am)

Graham J reports (10:51):

Got to Harpur Hill (Buxton) this morning via Fenny Bentley in 4WD.

The A515 north is fine – well ploughed and gritted, but side roads are not that good in Buxton.

We have also received this update (at 8.20am) from Derbyshire Dales District Council:

It’s a pretty bleak picture in the Derbyshire Dales first thing Monday.

Some good news is that enough staff have somehow managed to get into our four leisure centres in Ashbourne, Bakewell, Matlock and Wirksworth, so all are open for business, but please be aware that parking could well be a problem. Staff at Arc Leisure Matlock have managed to clear the driveway up to the lower pedestrian entrance, but the main car parks are not accessible.

Our weekly Bakewell stallmarket has been cancelled but the Monday livestock market at our Agricultural Business Centre in Bakewell is apparently going ahead as planned.

So far as waste & recycling collections go, there’s no chance of our crews getting out onto the roads today. A supervisor has been out on today’s routes and it simply isn’t safe to do the collections, so we’ll be playing catch-up for the rest of this week. Our advice to residents is please leave your bins out and we’ll get to you just as soon as we can.

We’ll be posting regular updates on Facebook and Twitter.

For conditions in and around Buxton, the reports at http://www.buxtonweather.co.uk/ are always helpful.

If you have any more information on road conditions and snow-related closures today, please let us know.

Igloos seem to be popping up all over the place!

weather13Jan20

Our Weatherman in the Village says:

It’s been a very cold week with temperatures not getting above freezing for long periods and that’s making the snowy conditions more difficult as there is no thaw.

The cold temperatures look like continuing throughout the coming week, but hopefully not too much precipitation on the cards. No let up to the wintery conditions in sight yet…..

A “historic” igloo

JF-S writes:

Congratulations on your igloo build, it looks pretty authentic. Ours built two years ago went a bit wrong. Still, it was fun to do.

Sadly Pilates Classes will be cancelled next week due to the heating system not working in the Memorial Hall. Hopefully they will run the following week. I will keep you up-dated.

BBC One to pay us a visit?

Word has it that a TV crew from BBC One’s Inside Out for the East Midlands may be paying a visit to Parwich and Alsop on Sunday, to find out how we are coping with the current weather conditions. The show airs at 7.30pm on Mondays.

How To Make An Igloo

You may have noticed that we have had the odd snowflake drop in on us yesterday. For one Parwich family, this provided the perfect opportunity to launch an ambitious construction project.

Once planning permission had been obtained – we are in the Peak Park after all – the intrepid construction team descended on the garden, intent on creating the perfect winter residence.

Dear Parents and Friends of Parwich School,

As the weather forecast for this weekend (Saturday 19th January) is for heavy snow we have decided to change the date for the ‘Celebration of Life service’ for Ray Williams. This service will now take place on Saturday 2nd February.

If you would like to be part of the service in anyway or would like to pay tribute to Mr Williams, please contact Caroline Rodgers at headteacher@parwich.derbyshire.sch.uk to discuss this further.

Many thanks
