Parwich Lunch – Reminder for February

February reminder

Parwich Bus Service

The Derbyshire Public transport unit have advised that there is a tendering process for the bus service in April. They said there is NO intention to take away a bus service from Parwich.

They are legally obliged to provide a service for children to school. They cannot provide details until after April of exact timetables. There may be changes to the services as a result of the re-tendering process and there will be notification in advance of any possible changes being implemented.

The Parish Council will be notified of any changes and will post these on the blog.

Parwich Lunch - February

Paul B’s Weedkiller Weekly #16

Hello Fellow Earthlings,

Well the big burger scandal rumbles on; at least we know for sure what one of the ingredients is; ask any French butcher what is the toughest part of a horse and he will tell you it’s the saddle. Has anyone analysed salami or hot dogs or that mouth-watering doner kebab, that is a must for every pub and club goer at the end of the evening, that indescribable lump oozing grease as it merrily revolves night after night; ‘Bon Appetite’.

Well Ashbourne will soon be bracing itself for the annual ‘Shrovetide’: Upard’s and Downard’s locked in gladiatorial combat, Of course the game was originally played with a human head, but this barbaric practice ceased in 1985. Allegedly many an old score has been settled in the mayhem of “The HUG”. Much further afield in days of yore, Captain Bligh and loyal members of his crew, after being relieved of their ship and awaiting rescue on the Pitcairn Islands, amused themselves by rolling coconuts at turtles on the beach, a game which became known as terrapin bowling.

Pilates classes cancelled this week.

The heating system is still not working properly. It works for a period of time and then stops. I checked the temperature on Monday morning and it was registering 13 degrees.

I have made the decision sadly to cancel classes this week.

The following two weeks are half term.

Classes will resume (heating permitting) week beginning Monday 25th February.

Hopefully see you all then.

Thanks
Sue

The parish council has been advised that chestnut trees at Nethergreen are diseased and pose a risk. Two of the trees are due to be felled early in 2013.

The parish council would like to receive opinions from Parwich residents regarding future proposals at the Nethergreen area, over a period of 4 weeks, from 7th January 2013.

The three options are:
1. No replacement trees at Nethergreen
2. Trees just on one side at Nethergreen
3. Avenue of trees on both sides of the road at the Nethergreen area

Film Night: Friday 15th February

Based on the book THE HELP, this charming comedy set in Mississippi during the 1960s tells of a southern society girl who returns from college determined to become a writer, but turns her friends’ lives — and a small Mississippi town — upside down when she decides to interview the black women who have spent their lives taking care of prominent southern families. Aibileen, Skeeter’s best friend’s housekeeper, is the first to open up — to the dismay of her friends in the tight-knit black community. Despite Skeeter’s life-long friendships hanging in the balance, she and Aibileen continue their collaboration and soon more women come forward to tell their stories — and as it turns out, they have a lot to say.

Ray Williams was Headteacher of Parwich Primary School from 1985 to 2007. During these 22 years, Ray’s inspirational teaching and wise leadership of the school profoundly touched the lives of so many people. It was very fitting that a celebration service was held yesterday at the school. Former pupils, teaching staff, governors and others who knew Ray gathered to celebrate the life and achievements of a very special man.

School photographs had been set out, showing the many pupils from Ray’s time at the school. People spent time spotting people they knew and reflecting on the large number of former pupils who had benefited from Ray’s teaching.

20130202_141350_768x1024

Current headteacher Caroline Rodgers welcomed everyone and provided some opening words. She then invited everyone to gather in The Celebration Garden where an oak tree was to be dedicated to Ray. Dennis Lacock talked about the significance of the tree and likened the planting of acorns to sowing knowledge and wisdom in the minds of children.

20130202_141055_1024x768

Ray’s wife and brother laid earth round the base of the tree and the oak was dedicated to Ray.

Back in the school, Margaret, Haley and Jenny made a warm tribute to Ray, talking about their experiences working with him in school.

20130202_143823_1024x768

A tribute was also made by former pupil Chloe.

20130202_144030_1024x768

Ray’s wife Margaret thanked everyone for coming and said it meant a great deal to her and the family. She mentioned that in April, Ray’s son Gareth will be cycling 1,600km from Adelaide to Canberra over 10 days in Ray’s memory. The funds raised will go directly into research and support projects aimed at finding a cure for cancer. You can find out more about this great cause and read Gareth’s blog during his ride by clicking here.

20130202_141556_1024x768

In her opening words, Caroline highlighted just how giving Ray was as a person. On this sunny afternoon, we had an opportunity to reflect on this and to give thanks for having met such a wonderful person.

Business Opportunity

Something new on the menu at Arc Leisure Matlock

Applications are being invited to run the café at Derbyshire Dales District Council’s Arc Leisure Matlock as the landmark attraction nears half a million visits.

Arc has gone from strength to strength since opening to the public in August 2011 and being officially unveiled by London Olympics mastermind Sebastian Coe KBE a couple of months later. The facility currently attracts as many as 6,000 visits in a single week.

Chairman of Derbyshire Dales District Council’s Communities Committee Councillor Mrs Carol Walker said: “This is an incredible opportunity for an established or start-up business that understands what regular visitors to Arc Leisure Matlock want to see on the café’s menu.”

For further details call Dave Turvey on 01629 761224 or email dave.turvey@derbyshiredales.gov.uk

Closing date for applications is 28 February.

Pilates update: no class on Wednesday

The heating system is still not working, so Wednesday’s class is cancelled. Arnold is hopeful that the problem will be sorted within the next couple of days. So hopefully classes will run next week.

Keep logging onto the blog for latest news. I will post an update on Sunday.

Thank you for your patience.

Derbyshire Dales Car Parking Review

The first detailed policy review in 10 years of public car parks across the Derbyshire Dales begins soon.

And Derbyshire Dales District Council – which operates 33 pay and display car parks throughout the Dales – will be inviting local people and traders to give their views on the way ahead.

The first opportunity will be at the District Council’s latest series of Area Community Forums in February, at Shirley Community Space (St Michael’s Church) on Monday 4th, Wirksworth Memorial Hall on Monday 11th and Bakewell Agricultural Business Centre on Monday 18th. All start at 7pm.

A formal consultation programme will follow in March and April, including focus groups with traders, residents, disabled users, town and parish councils and tourism and stakeholder organisations.

Feedback will also be available by post and online.

Every household in the Derbyshire Dales currently receives a free car park permit enabling them all to park free of charge at every District Council car park before 11am and after 4pm every day of the week.  For the past five years the District Council has also made parking free after 2pm for everyone throughout December to encourage people to shop locally. Suttons Seeds

A big thank you to Mike R for creating a second opportunity to order discounted seeds from the Suttons catalogue:

With the snow keeping me in doors these last two weeks, my mind has been giving attention to planning the garden for this year. As a paid up member of the Horticultural Society I have been wondering why my Suttons Seed catalogue has not arrived. A visit to my neighbour across the road reveals that the catalogues were given out at the AGM in the Autumn and there are no catalogues left. Further the P&DHS order has already been placed with Suttons and it is too late to include any order from me through the P&DHS!

The good news is that after talking to the organisers at Suttons this morning, they have confirmed to me they are willing to receive an order direct from me on the same terms as the P&DHS and a catalogue is being sent to me by return.

So, if there are any other Parwich gardeners in the same situation as me, puzzling why they have not been given a Suttons Seed catalogue this year, I would be more than willing to help out if they want to contact me and tell me their requirements.

Mike R. tel 390433

NB If you don’t have a catalogue, you can see what is available on-line at the Suttons website, but to get the discount don’t order on-line, rather speak to Mike. Existing orders are not effected by this.

Stream / Pond Management

On Tuesday & Wednesday this week, Derbyshire Dales District Council on behalf of Parwich Parish Council will be carrying out maintenance work on the Millennium Pond, Sheep Wash and on the sections of the stream that the Parish Council is a riparian owner.

Work is likely to commence from 8.15am.

The Big Thaw

The rate at which the snow has been disappearing is quite remarkable. Impassable roads yesterday morning are now perfectly driveable. This does mean the melting ice, coupled with the overnight rain, have left quite a bit of water to drain away. This picture shows the icy puddle just down by the Ballidon turning:

DSC_2238_1195x800

This however has to be seen to be believed. Tissington Ford reached 3 feet and caused the sign showing the depth to swivel round. No problem for Andy’s Defender however. Watch and wonder at this piece of video:

Don’t try this at home!

Our Weatherman in the Village says:

It looks like we’ve seen the last of the snow for a while, but we certainly got a lot. I didn’t manage to measure the total depth (did anyone record it?) but it looked over a foot to me. On that subject, of course the rain gauge will only measure liquid water so although the measurements were zero for most of the week, it doesn’t mean there was no precipitation.

The coming week looks like being relatively mild, windy and unsettled generally. After a week of difficult driving conditions, it will make a pleasant change.

Thank you David how encouraging, your cheque is in the post.

Splendid news for the economic woes of Ashbourne, a real shot in the arm for local commerce. The impending arrival of … Wait for it … drum roll please maestro, … … … – ’The 99 pence store’ – guaranteed to revive the most jaded of market towns. The sheep drovers will return, the ancient cobbles will once again ring with the clatter of horses hooves, the market will become a magnet for buyers from far and wide, the ancient ale houses will overflow. Actually joking apart the town was so quiet on Thursday the traffic warden ticketed his own car.

Thank goodness the bins have finally been emptied, one more week and I think ours would have become scheduled ancient monuments and most likely would have been investigated by the ‘Time Team’ in years to come.

A wee bit further afield three Colombians, who attempted to rob a store at 2.00 in the morning, were forced to abort the raid Continue Reading »
