Here are some interim results from the polls at PARWICH.ORG on the County Councils proposals for part night street lighting in Parwich village, which are being discussed at tonight’s Parish Council meeting.
Although there is a wide range of genuinely held opinions, so far there seems to be strong support for some reduction in street lighting (86%) with the largest group in favour of making a decision on a light by light basis.
- Decide on a light by light basis – 53%
- Turn all lights off for part of the night – 23%
- Turn street lights off altogether – 10%
- Keep all lights on all night – 14%
Looking at the individual polls (see Draft Interim Report for the workings out), PARWICH.ORG readers so far disagree with the proposals for 14 lights, have not reached a consensus for 4 lights, and agree with the proposals for 15 lights. Continue Reading »

Janis Castledine (1952-2013)
Thank you to Mike & Gill for the following:
Janis Castledine, late of Newton Grange and Parwich , died aged 61 on March 7th at the Royal Derby Hospital after a long and valiant battle with a brain tumour. She will be sorely missed by her family and all those who knew her. Jan lived in Parwich only a short while, living in one of the cottages on Creamery Lane where she planned and created a fantastic cottage garden from a sad looking back lawn. Janis was also involved in other village activities and was a committee member of the history society in its early days. After she left Parwich she continued to be a regular visitor to Flaxdale House for weekly painting sessions with Gill Radcliffe and she never left without a walk around the garden to see what was in flower and to appreciate Mike’s latest gardening activities. In fact she was an inspiration to Mike and Gill when they first came to Parwich and planned their gardening improvements, and many of the plantings were with Jan’s advice.
Her funeral is to take place on Thursday 21st March at 10am at St Peter’s Church, Chesterfield Road, Belper with the committal at Markeaton at 11am.

Hello Possums.
Many thanks to Mike A for his comment. It was an excellent review of the Justin Bieber concert; it was almost like being there myself, but of course I wouldn’t be; Bob Dylan is more my scene man. Mike also commented on the delays in starting times, you would think that with a
Rolex on each wrist Justin would have no excuses. I am delighted that Mike emerged triumphant in the tussle for the wringing wet vest that Justin threw into the audience; I suppose it will shortly be appearing on EBay. Well done Mike.

Our Weatherman in the Village says:
No let up in the continuing wintry conditions is in sight, unfortunately. The coming week looks like more of the same, with low temperatures and occasional rain or even snow.
This time last year, we were enjoying spring. This year, winter looks like hanging on for a bit yet. Perhaps we will be rewarded with a better summer?

So far there seems to be strong support for some reduction in street lighting (89%), with the largest group in favour of making a decision on a light by light basis. Up to this morning, Friday 15th March, 36 people have responded to our general poll:
- Decide on a light by light basis – 50%
- Turn all lights off for part of the night – 28%
- Turn street lights off altogether – 11%
- Keep all lights on all night – 11%
In relation to the polls for individual lights, so far, things are less clear cut: some indicate agreement with the County Counci’s specific suggestion, others indicate disagreement with the proposals, though for many there is a split vote giving no clear consensus. Continue Reading »

POSTPONED DUE TO SNOW – TO BE REARRANGED
Hartington’s town crier will summon people to the village pump on Saturday March 30 at 2pm to announce the launch of a new Village Trail.
Peak District National Park Authority chair Tony Favell and Hartington Parish Council will unveil new information panels, while leaflets, local history displays, tea and cakes and a Village Trail prize draw will be available from 12noon to 4.30pm in the Village Hall.
Villagers themselves got together to help create the new Village Trail that leads visitors back in time and encourages them to support local businesses for the future. The trail leaflet features a self-guided map, illustrations by local schoolchildren, and 11 points of interest put together by community groups, exploring the village’s rich heritage from the 1200s to the present day.Aimed at families, adults can enjoy the fact-packed potted histories, and children, led by “Detective Duck,” can test themselves on a treasure-trail of questions. Hello possums.
After the phenomenal success of Tom Chambers, we have another rising star in our midst. A mover and shaker, who makes Michael Jackson look like Pinocchio, our very own David S. A
‘Britain’s Got Talent’ scout spotted David strutting his stuff to ‘Mr’s Miggin’s Pie Shop’ at the Legion on Saturday night. Apparently David’s vertical leaps were worthy of the African ‘Whatootsie’ (Watusi) tribe, who execute amazing leaps in their fertility dances in an effort to impress prospective brides. In his usual modest manner David was unfazed by the prospect of stardom, but did manage to sign a few autographs before his wife, Sharon, carted him off home in a wheelbarrow.
