Parwich Heights – Instalment Ten

It has been some time, but the waiting is over folks! The latest enthralling instalment of Parwich Heights has been published.

The long months of winter are coming to an end and – although today is a bit grey – we are now seeing and smelling the glorious signs of spring. The latest instalment of the romantic novel written by the readers of parwich.org also has a spring-based theme. It’s almost as if the novel mirrors real life in our village!

Instalment Ten has been written by the inimitable and hugely talented Bridget Jones. It’s another page turner.

Our authors and authoresses have lots of fun writing Parwich Heights. Once completed, we hope to publish the novel as a physical book for sale locally. The Parwich publishing empire is on its way! Maybe it’s time to launch a Sunday newspaper….!

George Woolley

Sadly, George Woolley passed away on Thursday 23rd February. George grew up in Mappleton before eventually moving to Parwich, where he has lived for almost 50 years. Initially he lived at Gibbon’s Bank before spending the rest of his life in Sycamore Cottages with his wife Kathleen, who he has been married to for 49 years. He has four sons, Robin, Andrew, Robert and David, a daughter Jayne, eight grandchildren and one great grandchild.

George has always been a real supporter of village life, involved in various committees, he sat on the Village Hall Committee for many years and was also the President of the Horticultural Society for a long time; horticulture was one of his keen interests.

His family invites you to join them at his funeral on Monday at 9am at St Peter’s Church, Parwich.

Area Community Forum – on Monday

The District Council’s next round of the Southern Area Community Forum will take place in on Monday 5th March at Parwich Memorial Hall at 7pm.  Everyone Welcome.

The Forums provide an opportunity for members of the public and representatives from community & interest groups to meet with District Council representatives to air views and ask questions.

As well as councillors and senior officers from the District Council, the sessions are attended by representatives from Derbyshire Constabulary, Derbyshire County Council, the Peak District National Park Authority and Derbyshire Fire & Rescue Service.

Anyone who can’t attend in person can participate via a live Twitter link.

As this is an open meeting there was no Agenda.

Gill Harrison, Treasurer welcomed all to the meeting and gave a rough scenario of were we are at because of our Ofsted report. We might be thrown a lifeline Derbyshire County Council are visiting tomorrow (Friday 10 February 2012) to see how we have progressed since the Ofsted report and if they are happy we will get funding for 6 children (3 more than we were) from Easter. If we don’t then we can only run until May 2012. We currently have 10 children on the books and 6 leave this July for School. In September that leaves only 4 children this would only bring in £150 and it costs £411.61 a week to run at the moment. There is £500 in the cash flow and £900 in Reserve account to cover Redundancy if required. At the moment we are not viable to run in September 2012. Last year we had a lot of children funded so that’s what kept us going. We need to cut down on costs and push the Pre School.

We need to do all we can to try our very best to keep the pre school open. We need to advertise in/on papers, radio, page on blog – Jane Bennett will help flyers and leaflets. We will have to make a decision June/early July as to whether the Pre School will open in September 2012.

Free Paint

We have several boxes and bags full of Dulux emulsion and other paint  tins and cartons, in a multitude of colours and each part used. Quite  a lot of it.

We don’t want it to go to landfill, if possible. If anybody would like  to come and collect it from Fernlea House opposite the village hall,  please just turn up or call us on 500.

You’ll be very welcome to take it away for free.

Driver safety following traffic checks in Ashbourne

Almost 50 motorists have been stopped for not wearing a seatbelt or for using their mobile phone while driving following a road safety check in Ashbourne.

They were found during the latest Operation Safedrive day, a partnership campaign to ensure drivers are road safe and legal.

The checks place on Friday, February 17 at Ashbourne Fire Station on Park Road, thanks to the support of Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, who are the lead on road safety.

During the checks the team, which included police officers and PCSOs from both CREST (Casualty Reduction and Enforcement Support Team) and the areas local Safer Neighbourhood policing teams, issued a mixture of warnings and fixed penalty notices to:

• 44 drivers for seatbelt offences
• 14 for driving while using a mobile phone
• 11 people for driving vehicles with tyre defects
• 2 motorists were asked to remove their vehicles window tinting because it was found to be below legal visibility levels.
• 1 for number plate offences

I have recently returned to the UK after spending 25 years in Europe and am looking for lodgings in the Parwich area, after falling in love with the place.

I am employed by a charitable organisation and am based in Derby: as I cannot afford to rent a property on my own I wondered if you know of anybody who would house share or take in a lodger. I am a pretty versatile person and would slot into any household, share tasks and help – on the proviso that I can have a room with ensuite facilities.

I am 49 years of age, I don’t smoke and my one and only daughter is studying at university in Spain ( although I would like her to be able to stay with me during her uni breaks).

June Bank Holiday Weekend

Derbyshire Open Arts is a not for profit open arts event that takes place in various venues across Derbyshire. The event takes place annually in the Spring Bank Holiday. Each year over 100 Artists and Craftspeople display their work in separate venues and invite the public to view and purchase work as well as take the opportunity to meet to the visual arts professionals and find out more about what they do, as well as taking in the beautiful Derbyshire scenery over the weekend. Free brochures with maps will be available to download or from libraries, tourist offices or from the artists themselves nearer the time.

Ashbourne Festival
 22nd June – 8th July
Now in its thirteenth year, the Festival follows after the Diamond Jubilee celebrations and embraces the excitement of the Olympic torch passing through the town on its way to London for the opening of the July games.

Demand for firewood puts trees at risk

Tree experts at the Peak District National Park Authority are urging national park residents to contact them before starting any tree work on their property.

Trees are an important feature in the villages and countryside throughout the national park for the environment and wildlife as well as aesthetic reasons.

Tree conservation officers Dave Goodwin and Dave Frost are concerned at the recent and widespread increase in illegal tree cutting around the national park. Fines of up to £20,000 can be incurred for damaging or illegally removing trees.

The cause of the problem is believed to be the demand for firewood which has risen due to the increase in energy prices.

Trees can be protected by law if they are in conservation areas and by tree preservation orders, planning conditions and the Wildlife and Countryside Act. This means that permission is needed before any work on a tree can be carried out.

Dave Goodwin said: “We want to encourage good tree management and care and retain trees in our villages with minimum fuss and maximum encouragement. In some cases we are able to help with grants towards the work.

“Sadly some important and attractive trees have been disfigured or completely lost simply because people have failed to contact us before the work is done.”

The officers have written to all parish councils in the national park calling for their help in raising awareness with residents of the need to contact the tree conservation officers before any tree work is started.

Dave Frost said: “Over the past few months we have had to take people to task where illegal tree work has been done and it could have been avoided if people had contacted us first.”

Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations

We held a village meeting last week to plan for the Queen’s Golden Jubilee celebrations on Tuesday 5th June.

The plan is to have a tea party starting at about 4.30 by Nether Green, a paper boat race and games on the Green, a village photograph and to finish in the evening with a torch lit procession.

Jubilee mugs will be available at tea time for all of the village children aged under 16 and we have ordered some extra ones which can be bought on the day.

We thought it would be really fun and atmospheric to have a musical accompaniment to the procession and we would welcome a volunteer to do this. Please can anyone who is willing to do this contact me.

Parwich is also joined in to the national beacon lighting and this will take place on Parwich Hill between 10 -10.30pm the evening before, on Monday 4th June.

Lets hope the weather doesn’t let us down for all of this!

Dodgy ATM’s

Police are advising people to be extra vigilant after suspicious devices have been placed on two ATM’s (cash machines).

Between 6.30pm and 6.45pm on Tuesday 14th February, a device was placed on the ATM at a store at Granby Croft, Granby Road, Bakewell. While the person reporting this incident went inside the store to alert staff, the device was removed by the offender/s. Incident no: 509 of 14.2.12.

Just before 6.30pm on Wednesday 15th February, three men were seen acting suspiciously at a bank ATM, The Quadrant, Buxton. One of the men had placed a plastic object over the slot on the machine and then removed it when disturbed by a customer. Description: three men of Eastern European appearance, about 6ft tall, aged 40-50 years, well dressed. They headed towards the alley at the side of Pizza Express. Incident no: 573 of 15.2.12.

Crime prevention advice:

• Members of staff at premises with cash machines should check ATM’s regularly.

• Members of the community should check ATM’s carefully and avoid using them if there is a device on the machine or if anyone is acting suspiciously nearby. These offenders tend to maintain observations on the ATM during this type of incident.

• Report any suspicious activity around ATM’s to the bank or store and call Derbyshire police.

Anyone with information or CCTV near these locations should call 101, quoting the above incident number.

Change in Bus Frequency

Thank you to Heather and Carl W for letting us know that as from 25 March 2012, the 8.14 bus to Ashbourne and the 16.05 return will only run on schooldays. This means that during school holidays, the earliest bus to Ashbourne will be at 9.53 am and if you want to return in the afternoon you wtll have to catch the 14.47 or wait for the 18.15. The service will continue as normal during school term times.
