Residents in the Derbyshire Dales are being reminded about shed security as the Spring arrives and the summer approaches. It is at a time where people sheds and gardens will be used more frequently and also when they are more at risk of being targeted by opportunist thieves.

People are being offered the chance to buy discounted shed alarms and residents are being encouraged to take steps to help protect the valuable items they store in their sheds. The shed alarms have been bought in bulk at a cost of £7.19 each, and are being sold by the police to the Derbyshire Dales residents for £4.00. The subsidy has been provided by the Safer Derbyshire Dales community safety partnership

“As well as following advice including fitting and using a good quality lock, installing an alarm to your shed can act as great deterrent to thieves.”

Residents are asked to help prevent sheds from being broken into by:

Our weatherman on the hill said:

The unseasonal but summer like weather is over, a much cooler week with some rain and possibly sleet or snow to come. Summer weather will return (we hope!).

Trees and Insurance

In our current unseasonal dry season, and with increasing concern about insurance issues, it has been pointed out to us that we may not think about trees in relation to our buildings insurance.  Trees are a potential factor in subsidence but also failure to disclose ‘relevant’ information even if not relevant to a specific claim can invalidate your policy.

Thank you to Terry P for the following information, about the potential impact of trees on insurance:

Just recently I have been renewing insurance policies for buildings in my ownership, and these days I have a little more time to study the ins and outs of all the excess paperwork the insurance companies send with your renewal notice. One thing to look out for, is when you accept their terms, conditions and quote you will also be accepting their PROPERTY OWNERS’ STATEMENT OF FACT which has more than one or two exclusions in there. One thing I picked up on, is the distance of mature trees from a building that are likely to cause Heave or Subsidence, Continue Reading »

As chance would have it, our recent photograph of frolicking frogs at the Jubilee Pond has created a minor sensation in certain circles.

To most of us, this simply looked like a picture of ordinary frogs, going about their usual spring time activities. However, the photo has also managed to catch the eye of international maverick chef Heston Blumenthal, who became famous for serving dishes such as snail porridge and bacon & egg ice cream at his Fat Duck restaurant in Berkshire.

Heston Blumenthal is fascinated by the history of food. On his TV series Heston’s Feasts, banquets with Victorian, Medieval, Tudor and Roman themes were served to celebrity guests, who dined on delights such as bone marrow rice pudding, venison with dormouse, and calves’ brain custard.  Thanks to his great knowledge of food and his continual search for the unusual, Heston eventually found the photograph on this blog.

As Heston soon realised, these were no ordinary frogs. Instead, these were rare examples of Rana esculenta ssp. gustusspawnum, making them direct descendants of the edible frogs which were prized in Tudor times for their tasty frogspawn.

Heston quickly arranged a trip to Parwich, in order to collect a sample of this very special spawn. This gave him the long-awaited opportunity to develop a recipe that he had planning for several years. Naturally, the dish would be given the unique Blumenthal touch.

Back at his development kitchen in Bray, Heston started by separating the spawn into separate batches. These were then “stewed” for eight hours – at precisely 76oC – in extracts of vanilla, lychee, lime, peach and raspberry, so that each individual batch absorbed the colour and flavour of its own particular marinade.

Finally, just before serving, the spawn was “poached” at minus 196oC in liquid nitrogen, before being gently stirred into a separately prepared soft passion fruit jelly.

The resulting dish, which you can see pictured here, bears all the hallmarks of a classic Blumenthal creation, in which unusual, out of context ingredients are combined and prepared, using high tech methods, to spectacular effect.

By way of a “thank you” to the village, Heston recently invited Catering 4 Parwich’s Val Kirkham to the Fat Duck, where she was shown how to prepare the dish. This will be served at the next Parwich Lunch in the Memorial Hall. Val and Alison are expecting quite a queue, so do be sure to get there early!

UPDATE: There is, of course, no truth whatsoever in this story – but it was published on April 1st, and we have a tradition to maintain!

Up to 18 couples can be invited to the Reception, i.e. 36 people in total. In the event that more than 18 couples apply then each of the District / Borough / City Councils within the County will be asked to choose two couples each to ensure a fair distribution of invitations from across Derbyshire.

Quiz & Chilli Dinner – Saturday

Action plans agreed today (March 23) set out details of how the impact of recreational 4×4 vehicles and trail bikes will be managed on unsealed routes and off road in the Peak District National Park over the next 12 months.

The Peak District National Park Authority’s Audit, Resources and Performance committee approved action on green lanes, controlling illegal use of unsealed routes and communications.

A list of 27 green lanes have been identified as priority routes for attention; 24 in Derbyshire and 3 in Cheshire, South Yorkshire and Staffordshire. The number of priority routes may increase, particularly outside Derbyshire, as further routes are surveyed by national park rangers.

All vehicles using the priority routes will be electronically logged and monitored.

A variety of actions is planned, including repairs to surfaces, communicating with relevant parish councils and consultations on proposed regulations to vehicle use. Continue Reading »

We have received the following note of endorsement from Mike H:
I would like to let you know about an excellent experience I have just had with a new Parwich-based business called Generations Back Ltd.
Many people in the village know that Ian Pitts is very knowledgeable in the fields of local history and archaeology. I was interested to discover that Ian is also an expert at genealogy. For a long time, I had had it in mind to do some research into my own family tree but did not really have the know-how to undertake the exercise nor did I have the time to learn how to approach family history research. When Ian’s business was advertised on the parwich.org for the first time, I took the opportunity to make use of Ian’s expertise.
Ian approached the exercise in the most professional way. He started by discussing the project with me to understand my primary areas of interest in our family history. Ian then used a wide range of sources to produce a comprehensive report, providing information on my family as far back as 6 generations. He very thoroughly cross-checked the facts to ensure the accuracy of the information. That was only the beginning however; he was also able to find 19th century newspaper articles about family members, details from old wills, military records (e.g. Ian found dispatches from the Boer War that mentioned a family member) and bills of passage from ocean liners for ancestors that had emigrated to the USA.
Ian’s well structured and nicely presented report unearthed information about our family that would have been almost impossible for me to uncover myself.
If you were interested in finding out more about your family history and wished to engage a professional and knowledgeable expert to undertake some research, I can highly recommend Generations Back.

Parish Council Volunteer Update

Since the autumn the Parish Council has been re-examining the role of volunteers who carry out community work for them. This was reinforced at Wednesday night’s monthly Council meeting during the public speaking time when villagers made it clear that they would like to see volunteers taking a more active role within areas covered by the Parish Council.

Now for all the legal bit! As a public body the Parish Council has to ensure that the highest levels of safety are maintained at all times. We have a legal and mandatory duty of care to ensure that all volunteers are competent to carry out the work, which must be undertaken in a safe environment. The correct personal protective clothing and equipment must be used according to the task undertaken. A risk assessment has to be carried out, kept and communicated to volunteers to ensure that they work within the guidelines set out. The Parish Council has to be satisfied that volunteers possess adequate experience and depending on the type of work, relevant training or qualifications may be considered necessary. These are all legal requirements set out by our insurance company as well as by national bodies. Fortunately much of it is just common-sense to protect both volunteers and the Parish Council, identifying sensible and proportionate measures to control the risks.

So in plain English, as long as the tasks are appropriate and we all carry out the necessary legal requirements, volunteers are welcomed and we look forward to working together.

Lost Cat

Our cat Bob, who is a real creature of habit, has not been seen for over 36 hours.  This is very, very unusual for him.

He is black and white, wears a red collar with a pirate tag (unless he’s slipped his collar) but his most distinguishing features are his extra toes on each foot (he has “thumbs”) and exceptionally long whiskers.

Please, please keep your eyes peeled and let me know if you spot him. I’m hoping he is just out and about enjoying the good weather, but we are quite worried.

Parwich Parish Council Precept

It is with regret that the Parish Council is having to raise the precept. We are also very sorry that this information was not conveyed to those affected, before the increase was shown on the Council Tax bills.

Below is an outline of the responsibilities of the Parish Council which I hope illustrates the rationale for the increase and demonstrates that we are using the income we receive, to good effect.

What is the precept?

Parish Councils can raise revenue to help meet their spending requirements by issuing a “Precept”. This represents the total amount to be raised through Council Tax from all of the dwellings within the parish. The Precept is converted into an amount per council tax band and is added on to an individual Council Tax bill

In Parwich the Council Tax for 2012/13 includes a Parish Council Precept which impacts on individual Council Tax bills ranging from £19.53 per year for band A dwellings and up to £58.58 for the highest valued band H dwellings.

For mid-range band D valued dwellings in Parwich, the sum included within the Council tax bill after the 2012/13 increase, is £29.29 per dwelling per year.

This means that there has been an increase on last year’s cost per household, per year of £6.17 for Band A and £18.50 for Band H.

The annual increase for Band D being £9.25, an increase of less than 18p per week per household.
