David Allingham

Lynda K writes:

For anyone who knew David Allingham, who owned the Bentley Brook Inn for 28 years, he passed away peacefully last week at his home on Anglesey.

The funeral was today (Tuesday Feb 14) at the church where they were married at Great Bowden.

Farewell from Stephen & Nadica Village

We have received the following message from the Villages:

Firstly we would like to apologise for making our goodbyes in a less personal manner than we would have wished. We had hoped to host a Farewell drinks get-together but recent predicaments have meant we find ourselves challenged just to deal with our move. Once we are sorted out we hope to address the matter. We will be in Bakewell temporarily whilst we explore our next bolt holes both locally and in London, so hope to bump into familiar faces regularly. Our family has enjoyed a wonderful 12 years in Parwich and we feel sure that the new owners of Shaw Lane House (Charles & Judith Bailey) will feel the same.

Enclosing our warmest good wishes.

Drawing underwater: Part Four

Wednesday

Visibility: three metres. Exposure protection: wetsuit, hood and boots.

I’ve discarded my gloves today, as they make drawing a little more cumbersome. The sun is shining. My buddy and I make our final checks, wade into the water and dive.

The visibility is very good and within the first ten minutes I spot a pipefish! It’s only the second I’ve seen in as many weeks. I signal Shep and he spots it, just as I get his attention. I find it unexpectedly unnerving initially; with its head out of sight, it’s like a snake in the grass!

We watch it for a while, then move on… another! We pass an area of weed and Shep spots two more.

It has been one of the best dives to date: one hour and twenty-five minutes of incredible sea life, good visibility and warm waters.

Everything was right, and we really thought we would see the illusive seahorse today. But no… still no horses.

Lost: Pet Dog

Update: Jake has been found, and he is happy to be home!

We’ve been informed that Natalie S has lost her dog, and is desperate to find him.

Jake, who went missing on Sunday lunchtime, is a brown Staffordshire terrier (Grindle).

He has no collar on at the moment, and he has a white front foot.

Any information would be greatly received.

Please call Natalie on: 0797 143 6565.

Our thanks to Katy W, for passing us this information at Natalie’s request.

Zumba

Sadly we’ve just had the last Zumba class for the moment. Numbers have dropped to the point where the class is not viable for Lizzie. I am really sorry about this as I have enjoyed it so much. I am absolutely no good at dancing but it has been such a privilege to learn dance steps with a professional dancer. Zumba routines work both the body and mind. I was surprised at how hard I had to concentrate! And yes, it was sometimes an effort to get to the class but how fantastic to have yet another class arranged for us in the village! Also, I have not laughed till I cried for a long time!!

Slippy conditions

Just to warn that conditions underfoot are treacherous this morning. It’s currently raining into frozen ground so there is a lot of black ice on both the roads and footpaths.

Refreshments At Tissington

We understand that the Tissington Tearoom is closed for renovation until early March. Fear not however! You can get a nice cup of tea, hot chocolate or a selection of cold drinks from Edward & Vintage. This charming 1940s style, Tissington-based shop also sells the most amazing range of confectionery and homeware. Be prepared for a trip down memory lane if you are a tad nostalgic for the sweets of your childhood. We understand children like this shop very much too! Winter opening hours are Thursdays to Sundays, 11am – 4.30pm until the end of April.

Paul and Evie’s curries seem to get ever more delicious. These oriental delicacies are available from Thursday to Saturday between 5.00pm and 7.30pm. Call on 01335-390488 to order yours!
