Dorothy L’s wooded area has once again been glorious. The daffodil display was spectacular and now we have the treat of the bluebells. For those lucky enough to wander through the meandering paths, there is a special peaceful feel to the place. The sunlight dappling though the leaves onto the flowers below is magical. Flags and bunting can be seen flying all over Great Britain at the moment in celebration of the Royal Wedding. Parwich has its fair share of flags too.
With blue skies and slightly windy weather, the flag flying from the roof of the Hall in Parwich is particularly magnificent. We thought we would share a picture of it with you.

Steve K from Leek recently visited All Saints at Ballidon and was disgusted that such an old place of worship (12th century & rebuilt in the 19th century) could be allowed to decay and deteriorate. He has contacted the diocese at Wirksworth and is saddened that no one seems to care.

Today’s ‘This is Derbyshire’ & the ‘Derby Telegraph’ feature an article on Major Ben Ingham. Senior reporter, Martin Naylor saw the orginal articles on PARWICH.ORG and followed up a report for the newspaper.
Taliban-fighting major who misses the clean air of home
A SOLDIER from Derbyshire has told of his “challenging, stressful but rewarding” role fighting the Taliban.Major Ben Ingham has been keeping his family and friends up to date with his exploits in war-torn Afghanistan by sending regular emails and photos to his village’s website.
In his online dispatches to http://www.parwich.org, he tells how he is working at NATO headquarters in the capital Kabul.
The exact nature of the 37-year-old’s role is secret but his reports offer a fascinating insight into a soldier’s life in Afghanistan.

The tennis season is about to start in Parwich
with our first social event of the year
on Sunday 8th May 2011
If you are over 11 years old and can play tennis on a full size tennis court then this is your chance to come and take part in the opening social tennis event of Parwich Tennis Club’s Summer season. There will be lots of games for all and a handicap system to give everyone a chance of winning!
*Register on the day – £1 entry fee
* Be at Parwich Tennis Courts by 1pm
* Play will commence at 1.15 pm
* Finish around 5.30pm with refreshments and presentation of the trophies
* Players to bring a plate of food (call Tracey on 231 for suggestions)
Dust off your tennis shoes, search out your racquet and come and join us, you dont need to be a member to take part!

Poppy has gone out to grass and her milk yield has increased. Is there anyone who would like to try some raw Jersey milk? Overnight on 26/27th April, offenders forced entry to several farm buildings in Alsop-en-le-Dale, near Ashbourne. Saddles and a hat have been stolen from the tack room. The offenders may have been disturbed during this burglary.
Anyone with information is asked to call 0345 123 33 33, quoting crime number: 21599/11.
Ensure that your premises are secure and report any suspicious activity to Derbyshire police.

Our Council has to have a maximum of seven Parish Councillors, with a quorum of three (which is the minimum number of Councillors that Parwich needs to carry out its function).
For Parwich to have no Council after May 9th, this means that less than three people submitted their candidacy for election; it may even mean that no-one chose to stand.
Derbyshire Dales District Council has said that a new election will be called, possibly by the end of July. So on 9th May, the existing Parish Councillors officially retire and thereafter are not legally allowed to carry out any further Parish Council business.
During this interim period, any issues relating to the Parish must be directed to either the District or the County Council.
The new Notice of Election will be posted on the village notice board. We shall also request that it is sent to PARWICH.ORG, in order to reach the widest possible audience.
If between three and seven people choose to stand, then there will be no election and these candidates will be automatically elected. However, if the election is contested, i.e. with more than seven candidates, we will have an election. If an election does take place, these additional costs would have to be paid for out of the parish precept.

Although I bemoan the fact that we do not have very many members, the few we do have really do us proud. The past couple of weeks only serves to prove the point.
Tuesday league – 19 April – Home – Chatsworth.
The maximum points you can win in this league is 84. ( 4 x 21 ). We obviously try to win by as many points as possible, but there are some very good teams and therefore players in the league. Anyway we managed the top score beating our opponents by 84 to 53. This put us fourth in the league albeit after only two games.
26 April – Away – Ashwood Park Buxton.
We never do very well on this green and after the beautiful warm weather we have been having it was really quite chilly. However our team warmed up the green with another full house winning by 84 to 36. I am sure this is the best result we have ever had against Ashwood either home or away. I wonder where we will be in the league?
Next match 3 May – Home – Whitworth Park A.
Thursday Friendly league.
Having blown our trumpet over the results of the Tuesday team we are struggling somewhat in this league.
14 April – Away – Baslow.
A good team and a tricky green. Having said that we acquitted ourselves well. Although we lost all three doubles games we did share the singles games three each. The result however was 125 to Baslow 111 to us.
21 April – Home – Wirksworth A.
Another loss this week; but a creditable one. Wirksworth were only just relegated last year and have very good players. The score was 119 to 126.
Next match 28 April – Away – Chatsworth.
We had a really pleasant friendly game with Hazelwood. The hospitality was very nice.
Don’t forget Monday nights 6.30pm.

We are thrilled to report that Janet had a little baby girl just before 11.00am on Sunday morning!
Both mother and baby are doing well. When Steve returns from the DRI we’ll try and bring you further details of this wonderful Easter birth.
Update: Her name is Rosie, and she weighed in at 7 pounds and 4 ounces.

Dearest Reader,
It gives me the utmost pleasure to present to you a further instalment of Parwich Heights, the striking work of romantic fiction penned by the collective contributions from readers of this virtual forum.
As you will no doubt be aware, my good friend Lady AgaSaga has kindly consented to bestow upon us the benefit of her fertile imagination. I believe she created this particular contribution from her private carriage on the Orient Express as she took her early Spring break to Venice. You will no doubt find this latest instalment to be of the utmost fascination. I for one almost fell off my horse as the twists and turns unfolded before my eyes. I urge you therefore to situate yourself in a stable location before you commence to read.
I must, dear reader, conclude this epistle now as our regiment has much to prepare for a certain royal wedding. Please forgive my brevity. I can however commend this work to you and hope you find as much pleasure reading it as I did.

Businesses of all sizes in the Peak District are being given a strong new voice with the creation of a group to promote the area as a place to do business.
Called Business Peak District the group will be led by a wide range of representatives from the business community. It will represent all businesses in the area covered by the Peak District National Park and the High Peak, Staffordshire Moorlands and Derbyshire Dales districts or boroughs.
All businesses are being invited to join an event to find out about the group and its plans at Thornbridge Hall, near Great Longstone, on Monday 16 May, 5-8pm. It doesn’t matter how big or small your business is. Maybe you are even thinking of starting a new business.

Rannoch Linnell has been offered an amazing opportunity to go with 11 other boys and 2 teachers to Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands for a month in summer 2012. Whilst on the Galapagos Islands he will be a volunteer working with a disadvantaged community, this may involve working with local children or helping in building projects. In Ecuador they will be trekking through the Andes, followed by a challenging hike through the Amazon Rainforest to work with local tribesmen.
The planning of the trip is done in co-ordination with the World Challenge organisation, but once abroad the teenagers have to organise everything themselves!
So, Rannoch needs to earn money to pay for the trip. He is willing to do almost anything; labouring, gardening, mowing, decorating, babysitting etc. He is available most Sundays and throughout the school holidays. I apologise for that lack of personal content in the latest article but hope that the article gives an insight into some of the difference between the people and culture of Afghanistan in comparison to our own. The longer I spend here the more evident it becomes that the differences in our respective ideologies are chasms apart and that what we, in the west, perceive as abnormal or dysfunctional is viewed totally differently though the eyes of an Afghan local.

The spare time to sit and write is being rapidly eroded as the workload continues to mount. It is hard to define if we are making a significant improvement in the overall security of the country and my perspective, from within the headquarters, will differ greatly from the perspective of the typical infantry soldier out on patrol and moreover to the message being delivered by a western politician. Nevertheless, a rough timescale in which the Afghan Government will transition to control of its own Provinces has been set for 2015. By this stage it is hoped that we will have created an Afghan National Army and National Police Force, which will counter the insurgent threat that proliferates across the country. Additionally, the aspiration is to provide the Afghan Government with the skill set to correctly govern what appears to be an ungovernable, fragmented society. Continue Reading »
