Although it is not a long distance as fell racing goes, the challenge of Parwch Hill Race is the steep-sided Parwich Hill.
Above is J Pountain as he approaches the summit to win the trophy for first runner to the top of the Hill. Following are nearly all the runners near the top (apologies to the few that were missed):

With the rain holding off, the evening went well with increased numbers of runners in the main Senior Race, which was won by M Jones in 18min 59sec, slightly slower than last year. We missed Paul Mannion this year, but at least it gave someone else a chance.
The quickest home in the Junior Race was A Stone in 12min 33sec, a faster time than last year. Here are the winners:

Bowls extravaganza at Parsons Croft

All Ages Golf Target Competition – Parsons Croft
Parwich Bowling Club have kindly organised an event for youngsters to introduce them to the delights of Green Bowls. All children are welcome to what should be an exciting new event. 
At the same time on Parsons Croft we have another new event – a target golf competition for all ages.
Don’t forget the Film tomorrow night, starting after the Ball Race.

More than 20 people from Parwich and Tissington met up in the Bletch Brook Valley with representatives from the National Park, to look at the wild flowers and find out about the elusive water vole.
Some of the best wild flower meadows are owned by Parwich United Charities (see photo below) and wonderfully managed by local farmers who over recent years through positive husbandry have brought back mixed hedgerows and increased the number of flowers dramatically. The reddish brown hue is bentgrass which follows the ridges of the ridge and furrow system in this field. One farm alone in the valley has over 200 mature trees, including 17 different species, this is considered remarkable for such a small area.
Thank you to Lynn Burrow, our local ranger for organising last night’s delightful free walk and to the experts, for their fascinating insight to the area and to all the farmers who look after this valley.

Forum Meeting

If you have any concerns or issues that you would like raising at this next meeting, please contact this group through their new e-forum, which is part of the Community Messaging Service. This gives each individual and village the chance to contribute to the setting of priorities in their neighbourhood.
The Safer Neighbourhood policing teams hold a meeting every three months to set priorities, offering residents the chance to select what their local police officers and other agencies target.
Each team works in partnership with local agencies, which include parish, town, district and county councils, housing associations, Derbyshire Youth Service, Derbyshire Fire and Rescue Service, Neighbourhood Watch among others, to help keep your area a safe, clean and pleasant place to live.
Priorities can include a wide variety of issues, including anti-social or nuisance behaviour, graffiti or vandalism, speeding, parking or anything which you feel impacts on the quality of life for you and your neighbours.

A free guided walk through wildflower-rich hay-meadows, and the chance to search for the elusive “Ratty”, is on offer on Monday July 4th in the Bletch Brook Valley, between Parwich and Tissington. Meet at 6.30pm outside The Sycamore
Peak District National Park ecologists and experts from the Derbyshire Wildlife Trust will lead the walk, looking out for rare species including the water vole, known as “Ratty” in Kenneth Grahame’s Wind in the Willows. One of the UK’s most threatened species, the water vole has disappeared from 90 per cent of sites it occupied over the last 60 years. But it does survive in pockets of the Peak District National Park – including the Bletch Brook Valley.
The two-hour walk starts from two meeting places, both at 6.30pm on July 4th: outside the Sycamore Inn in Parwich, and in front of Hand’s Well in Tissington. There is no need to book. Dogs should be on leads. If you have any questions, please call 01298 84992.

Our annual visitors from the Camping and Caravanning Club’s Nottinghamshire District Association are with us once again, staying at Parson’s Croft until Monday. They are always a welcome presence on the Carnival Parade, and we particularly hope that they will enjoy tomorrow’s “Fun and Games”, which starts at midday.

The start of the second half of the season. Where did the first half go? One win one loss again this week.
Tuesday league
28 June – Away – Matlock Golf Club.
They say a week is a long time in politics; well it is a disaster in bowls. By a fluke in the fixtures we played the Golf club two weeks running. First at home, last week and second, this week away. The scores for each side were very close in both matches. 79 to 57 to us at Parwich, 75 to 54 to the Golf Club at Matlock. Why is it that the two games are such a contrast? It’s a funny old game! We were up to third in the league but this result has dropped us down a couple of places.
Next match 5 July – Home – Lafarge (Hope).
Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
30 June – Home – Baslow B.
Again a match of contrasts. We did not do well in the three doubles games, winning only one out of the three. The points at this stage were 53 to Baslow 34 to us. What a change around in the singles games we won five out the six only missing out winning the sixth by one point. The score in these games were 89 to us and 50 to Baslow. This gave us an overall win of 123 to 103. What a comeback! We had dropped down to sixth in this league so hopefully we will not fall any further after this really good result.
Next match 7 July – Away – Wirksworth A.
No Club games this weekend, it’s the start of Wakes. Keep your fingers crossed for good weather, particularly on Wednesday evening when you can all enjoy a bowls extravaganza at Parsons Croft. All welcome from 3 to 103. See you there.

Derbyshire County Council are undertaking some road resurfacing in Parwich next week; this will involve Smithy Close and Croft Avenue. They had also planned to resurface Church Lane then, but will postpone that until the week after to avoid clashing with Wakes Week.
Residents of the streets involved should have recieved warning, but for more information contact Derbyshire County Council on tel 08456 058058.

Tomorrow is the bulk rubbish collection; the dustcart picks up at various points in the village. Remember if you leave rubbish to be removed, you must be in attendance when the wagon comes and load your rubbish, yourself.
Unfortunately Saturday’s collection day does coincide with the Wakes Saturday and the Oddfellow’s Parade, as was pointed out 4 months ago on the blog. Derbyshire Dales said yesterday that it was too late to cancel it, but the driver will be made aware of the situation.

Major Benjamin Ingham writes:
I have been deployed for just over five months now and have been keen to try to explain what a typical day might entail. A single day feels like a week back in the UK, however very soon the hours blur into days and days into weeks. Regardless, I dare not count for fear of ‘wishing my life away’. Instead, I set small goals each week such as 30,000 meters on the rowing machine or 15 laps of camp. To put time into perspective, two weeks of R&R goes by quicker than a single 24 hour block of time in Afghanistan.
Living.
I share a tiny room with three other guys from my headquarters in a utilitarian ‘hardened accommodation’, so called because they are designed to protect against rocket and mortar attack. Bunk beds are used to save space and we share two wardrobes and a desk between us.
Our beds are shrouded using old sheets; if you are night shift, it keeps the light out when trying to sleep during the day and although small, it is the only truly private place available. With space at a premium, kit is stored in any available nook and cranny: under beds, on beds, behind the door, stuck on the wall, taped to the site of wardrobes… you name it, there is a piece of kit sitting, lying, stuck or draped on under or over it.
I avoid the morning shower rush and in order to save time, shower and shave in the evening. Water is also at a premium so we ‘ship shower’: water on – water off – soap on – water on – soap off – water off. All water is pumped from the natural Kabul sub-surface water supply and is therefore not drinkable and incredibly salty. It strips the skin of any moisture in just one short wash.
Feeding.
There are two DFACs (Dining Facilities) on camp run by a large civilian contractor. The cheapest contract wins and thus we lose out on food quality. For breakfast: sausage ‘things’, semi-cooked bacon and a choice of cereal is accompanied by 1 x serving of fruit, all served from an industrial sized food counter.
