A message from John B:
You may have been watching the World Bowls Championships on the television, well you too could be part of the bowls scene right here in Parwich. Perhaps we are not quite as good as Paul Foster or Alison Merrion, but with practice perhaps you could be.
We had our AGM in the Legion last week. We have now so few members and players it really is getting critical how much longer the Club will continue. We have gone from more than 30 people in 2004 to 15 this year!
Our fees are £20 per year. The season starts at the beginning of April, although we do try to get some practice in March, but this depends on the weather.
Please try to support your local Club.
We did discuss at the AGM the possibility of indoor bowls in our lovely new village hall. In order to gauge whether this could be something that people may want it would be good to see how many people would consider playing. We can then review possible grants for equipment etc. If you are interested will you please register this by letting us know by phone or meeting with an existing member.

We have the received the following excellent news from Rebecca B:
We have got our grant! and this together with the donations from the Horticultural Society and Parwich United Charities means we can now go ahead with our Over 6Os exercise class. The first class will take place on Wednesday 2nd February at 2pm, followed by refreshments at 2.45pm. That class and the one the following week will be free taster classes, although a donation of £1 towards the refreshments would be appreciated. Thereafter the cost will be £4 per session to include the refreshments. Unlike the evening classes where we pay up front for a block of classes, the charge for these classes will be payable per session only if you can attend that class. The teacher Tricia Durdey would like all participants to fill in a health form, which will be delivered to all who have expressed an interest. Forms can also be filled in at the class on the 2nd and there will be an opportunity to talk to Tricia if you have any particular health concerns about exercising.

Tomorrow is bulk rubbish collection day; the dustcart picks up at various points in the village. Remember if you leave rubbish to be removed, you must be in attendance when the wagon comes and load your rubbish, yourself. Don’t lose it, use it.

We have received the following request for help from Jacqui and Paul:
Paul and Jacqui Jesson (‘The Happy Campers’) are asking for your urgent help. Quite a few of you may be aware that we are hoping to move into the lovely village of Parwich very shortly and are currently buying Jane Harris’s house: 9 Sycamore Cottages. Unfortunately, when the search was carried out, it came to light that there is a covenant of the Property that anyone wishing to Purchase the house must have lived in the area for a minimum of three years.
Although we do not own property in the village, so therefore can not produce things such as utility bills, we are trying to show the Council that we have been members of the ‘Parwich Community’ since 2004, that we have many friends within Parwich, and that we have tried to support the village throughout this time, spending as much time as possible in the area.
We would therefore like to appeal to as many of you as possible to help us achieve this. Paul and I have drafted a letter, confirming how long we have been coming to the village and supporting Parwich. We are asking for as many of our friends and hopefully neighbours as possible to add their names and addresses and to sign the letter, enabling us to take these to the Council to help us get the Covenant dismissed for the sale to proceed.
Also, if anyone would be kind enough to put pen to paper to support us, we would not be able to thank you enough. The letters would need to be addressed to:

We need to be able to produce as much evidence to help to get the covenant changed to the council by the end of January.

The A52s will play a monster gig at The Miners Arms in Brassington on Saturday 29th January, starting around 8.30pm.
The band will feature their new horn section – the mighty Chad Bean on saxophone (and virtuoso recorder!).

Our village website has just passed a historic milestone today. This blog, set up to serve a few hundred people in and around Parwich, has just received half a million visits.
The site has been extraordinarily successful since it was officially launched in March 2008. The blog plays an important role in keeping the community informed and provides an effective means of holding a collective dialogue. We are regularly cited as one of the most successful ‘hyperlocal‘ websites in the country, and we are held up as an example of what local communities can achieve when they harness the power of the internet.
On average last year, we received 545 page views per day. These visits come from people who live locally and want to know what’s going on; they come from from people who used to live here and like to keep a connection to the area; they come from people as far afield as the USA and Australia, who have historical connections and want to find out more.
So here are some more statistics…
Our most popular month was January 2010, when 72 notices were posted and almost 26,000 page views were recorded. Subjects ranged that month from make-up workshops, through Austrian dinner evenings to a lament that the fish and chip van hadn’t turned up!
Our most popular day was June 30th 2010, when 2003 visitors clicked on the site. The main interest that day was the Hill Race. Many pictures of the contestants were posted and there was great interest in this record of the races.
They say the best form of flattery is imitation. We were particularly chuffed therefore that the creators of that long-running BBC institution – The Archers – have used parwich.org as an input to create their own village website – click here to see just how similar it is! What’s more, Archers scriptwriter Keri Davis dips in to parwich.org to get ideas.
I’ve been popping into parwich.org for quite a while as an Archers scriptwriter, often drawing on it for little village details. So yes, it was a big influence when we were setting up the Ambridge site.
Most of all, we’d would like to thank you for your support and active participation on the website. It’s a cliché, but without you, the whole thing would not work at all! Please keep your information and ideas rolling in….we’ve only just begun……

I have received a letter regarding a meeting at Calver Village Hall at 7pm on Thursday 20th of January. The meeting is for people who have had dealings with the Peak Park Planning Authority and who feel aggrieved at their treatment, and finally the decisions that the Peak Park Authority have come to regarding planning applications that have been submitted. I believe that one of the things to be discussed is the non-uniform way in which different people are treated regarding planning.

Good news folks!
We know many of you have been waiting expectantly for the next exciting episode of Parwich Heights, the page-turning romantic novel written by you, the readers of parwich.org. We are delighted to announce Instalment Eight has been lovingly crafted and is published today for your reading pleasure!
This next chapter has been written by the incredibly talented authoress Bridget Jones. She lives locally (no doubt in a windswept cottage up on the hill) and has used her extensive local knowledge to weave elements into the story that will seem strangely familiar to people who know Parwich and its surrounds. We think this particular instalment is a cracker.

Our authors and authoresses have lots of fun writing Parwich Heights. Once completed, we hope to publish the novel as a physical book for sale locally. We even have grand ideas to create ‘The Parwich Heights Trail’ for people to visit the places that have inspired the book.
If you would like to try your hand at an instalment of Parwich Heights, contact one of the Blog Team or drop a quick email to parwich@hotmail.co.uk. You can write a paragraph, a page or a whole chapter and we won’t give you a draconian deadline! If you apply, a friendly member of the blog team will allocate you an instalment and check with you that you are not too busy at the time. It’s a great way to develop your creative writing skills and you can use a pseudonym if you don’t want to be mobbed by the world’s press. Let your creativity run riot!

My New Year’s Resolution is to try and give more information about Parwich First Responders as a group. Anyone who knows my hopeless typing and computer skills will realise that this will amount to quite a challenge for me.
However, it needs doing and as Chair (again, all those who know me will be aware that I once forgot that I’d volunteered/ been persuaded to take on this role for a whole year!!) I’m going to attempt to keep it up for longer than just January.
