A few days ago, we published a post on Dorothy L and the blooming daffodils in her woodland garden. This post was picked up by a reporter from The Ashbourne News Telegraph, who promptly came to the village with a photographer. Arthur and Ethel Gosling spent the weekend celebrating 60 years of happy marriage. The Goslings both went to Biggin Primary School together, but the couple went their separate ways and it was not until 1943 that their lives crossed at a young farmers’ dance. The couple spent the next seven-years courting and the two married in 1950. “We were looking for a farm to live on for a number of years. In those days you didn’t get married until you found somewhere to live.” In the last 60 years, the Gosling family has vastly expanded. They now have seven grandchildren and eight great grandchildren the youngest is nine-years-old.
The Goslings say there is no secret to a long and successful marriage, but it takes commitment from both sides.

A fascinating article (“News on your doorstep”) in the current (10 April) edition of The Tablet talks about the ways that “citizen journalism” – and so-called “hyperlocal” blogs in particular – can help boost the identity of a community. The article makes special mention of PARWICH.ORG throughout, with particular reference to Andy Larkin’s recent series of videos. There are also several quotes from the blog team’s Mike A, who was interviewed by the reporter a couple of weeks ago.

The last fortnight has been a hive of activity inside the hall. As can be seen from the photos, the scaffolding is back in the main hall to allow the electricians to site the wiring, ready for the lights, cinema and sound system. Many thanks to Dave R who sent us the following information:
Work appears to be progressing very well both on the landslip near the Bentley Brook Inn and on road repairs between Bradbourne Ford and the landslip. I hear that it could be open by 11th May. The attached photographs show that the retaining wall on top of the piles is complete and that the stone facing is well advanced. Base layers of the road are being laid and compacted.
There seems to have been an additional landslip in the woods below the line of piles. You might be able to pick out the trees at odd angles in one of the attached the photographs.
The road surface is being repaired and drainage improved all along the stretch of road. New kerbing is in at Horsley Farm and new stone retaining walls are being built where the road has been scraped back to its original width. You’ll be pleased to note that the tight corner near Bradbourne Ford has been widened by cutting into the bank. Finally, many overhanging trees have been cleared from the roadside and this makes the road feel wider and lighter in those places.
Whilst the road closure has been very inconvenient for us all, I think that the council engineers should be congratulated on the improvements that they have carried out. See for yourselves in May.
There are also three new milestones along the route. No prizes are on offer, but we’re running an impromptu competition for the first photographs of these milestones to be sent into us. (Hint: The milestones are one mile apart!).

The first matches of the new season took place this week at Parsons Croft with not very auspicious results.
The club plays in two leagues – The Matlock and District Tuesday League and the Matlock and District Thursday Friendly League. As those of you who went to University will note we play on a Tuesday and Thursday on a home and away basis. The season for both leagues end in early September.
Tuesday league. – Matches usually start at 6.30 pm.
Home to Matlock Golf Club.
It was a very close match. Each team is made up of 8 members and 4 ‘doubles’ matches are played. First pair to 21 wins the match. Parwich won two matches and lost two matches. The overall result was a win for the Golf Club 70 points to 69.
The next match is away to Chatsworth.
Thursday league. – Start time 1.45 pm.
Home to Wirksworth.
These matches consist of three games of doubles – first to 21 and six games of singles – first to 15.
We nearly had to concede games, as the minimum number of players required is 6. We just made the required number of players.
Although we lost the match overall, considering our scarcity of numbers, we did reasonably well. We won the doubles games by 60 points to 50, but lost the singles games by 84 points to 62. Giving an overall result of a win for Wirksworth 134 points to 122.
The next match is away coincidentally to Chatsworth.
We are having practice meets down at Parsons Croft on Monday evening at 6.30 pm until 7.30 – 8.00 pm. Why not come down and have a go. We could certainly use new members and players.

A swallow was spotted flying and feeding around Blanche Meadow last night ( 8th April). Is this the first in the village? Unfortunately it doesn’t appear to be one of our regular nesters as it is no longer around this morning. We are very fortunate to have anything up to five nesting couples each year – the earliest and most experienced have been know to raise three broods. Over the years we have built special nesting ledges inside the stables to encourage them to stay. The sight of five little heads peering over the nest never fails to give us all pleasure. The only downside is the amount of bird dropping on the horses backs in the mornings.

Here are our highlights of this week’s edition. As always, please let us know if there’s anything of local interest which we’ve missed.
Page 2: “£3m shot in the arm for our local services“. Derbyshire County Council is to receive more than £3 million to improve services, from crucial skills and jobs programmes to arts facilities for young people and town centre regeneration projects.
Page 3: “Cat centre visitors show generosity”. An Easter celebration at the Derby Cat Adoption Centre raised £2,300. A number of people from our area are actively involved with this charity.
Page 11: If you would like to take part in the BBC2 antiques show “Flog It”, you can have your antiques valued by the show’s experts at QEGS on Saturday 10th April, from 9.30am to 4pm. Admission is free.
Page 12: “Dovedale Sheepdog Trials”. The Dovedale Sheepdog Society is holding its Tom Nadin Memorial Cup event on May 8th, at Dove Top Farm in Alsop.
Page 13: The new branch of Waitrose in Ashbourne are offering a £3 discount voucher, redeemable to anyone spending £15 or more at the store before 18th April. (You’ll need to buy a copy of the paper to obtain the voucher, of course.)
Page 23: “Free entry to Sudbury for anyone living in DE6”. The Sudbury Museum of Childhood is opening its doors for free this coming weekend, to anyone who can bring along proof of their home address in DE6.
Page 23: “Early morning bird stroll followed by a breakfast”. One for our local ornithologists: the National Trust are holding an early morning event at Ilam Park on Saturday April 24th. You can hear the dawn chorus from 6.30am, followed by a full Staffordshire breakfast at 8am. To book, call 350503.
Page 26: A grass eating auction is being held at Bakewell Livestock Centre at 3pm on Monday April 12th. This includes grazing land at Pikehall.
Page 38: “Local pupils win charity contest“. QEGS pupils have won a charity junior golf competion, which raised £2371 for the British Heart Foundation.

The General Election has been announced for Thursday 6th May 2010. As the Memorial Hall will not be ready then, the Parwich Polling Station will be in the Sycamore Inn, so you can get a coffee or a beer at the same time as you vote.
If you are not already registered to vote you will need to do so by 2oth April in order to participate in this election (click here to find out how to register or to check if you are already registered).
Our local constituency was West Derbyshire, which has been a safe Conservative seat since the 1950s, but is now reformed as Derbyshire Dales which will be contested for the first time in this election. The sitting MP for West Derbyshire is Conservative Chief Whip Patrick McLoughlin, who has held the seat since 1986. In the last election in 2005 there was a 69% turn out with the Conservations polling 48% of the vote (Labour 27%, Liberals 22% and UKIP 3%).
The prospective candidates for Derbyshire Dales are (these are the ones I have found so far, but there may be others):
- Conservative: Rt Hon Patrick McLoughlin
- Green Party: Josh Stockwell
- Labour: Colin Swindell
- Liberal: Joe Naitta
- UKIP: Ian Guiver
PARWICH.ORG will invite responses from the above on local issues, so add comments below saying what you want to know about. (Hopefully these Parliamentary Candidates will be more interested in replying than the European Parliament Candidates were.)

Now that we no longer have the fish and chip van visiting the village, I wondered if fellow villagers would be interested in to know that Ye Olde Gate pub at Brassington is now providing a takeaway fish, chips and mushy peas service on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6.30-8.30.
The price is £5.95 for a medium fish, or £6.75 for a large fish.
Some of you may also be interested to know that some of the draft lagers and beers are discounted between 6.00 and 7.30!

This great afternoon may not be happening until Saturday 8th May, but have you registered yet? 450 walkers have already. Click here to download your form. It is £10 for adults and £5 for under 18’s and if you want to you can also get a sponsorship form to raise additional funds.
The walk is 8.5 miles along, on good paths, it is relatively level and easy walking around Carsington Resevoir.
All the money raised from the 2010 walk will go towards funding for equipment for the Breast Cancer Unit at Royal Derby hospital.

OPEN GARDEN AT CULLAND HALL, near Brailsford

The Plant Fair will be open from 11:00 am to 4:00 pm, tickets are £3.50 (children free) and there is ample free parking. Refreshments will be served all day. In addition to plants for sale there will also be French and Shabby Chic garden furniture and a variety of quality gardening goods.
This is the fifth annual Open Garden and Spring Plant Fair and it is in aid of local charity ‘The Mid-Derbyshire Association for Mobile Physiotherapy’, which has been providing home based physiotherapy for over 25 years to housebound, and often isolated people, living in the Derbyshire Dales area. There will be unusual plants for sale from leading specialist nurseries and RHS exhibitors.
Culland Hall garden is featured in this month’s edition of Derbyshire Life, using some of Debbie W’s photos.
Culland Hall is based in an idyllic position on parkland which was laid out in the 18th century; although there has been a house at Culland since the 12th Century. There are 5 acres of garden as well as a lake. The owners, Simon and Lucy Thompson are well acquainted with the house and gardens, as Simon’s father bought the estate in the 1930’s (where he built a new house on the old site.) Continue Reading »

Thank you to Andy & Jo, Phil K, Emma, Sue H & Patti for either potting up or letting us dig up parts of their garden and relieving them of some of their snowdrops. Once the Memorial Hall grounds have been landscaped, we will plant these bulbs in drifts in the bed near the entrance. If you have any spare clumps of snowdrops in your garden, please pot them up and let Jane (665) or Glynis (561) know.

Happy Easter!
We’re just coming up to having been at Parwich Lees Cottage for a year now – and have not had much luck in finding out too much about the history of the property other than it was the Head Bailiff’s House for the Parwich Lees Estate. We were wondering if there’s anyone in the village that has any further information on the property or any old photographs of what it used to look like, we know it was in a state of disrepair in the 1960’s when a builder took it over and renovated it. We also know that the property was extended at some point in the recent past – and were wondering what it would originally have looked like inside and out. We discovered that there was originally a range in what is now the dining room and have exposed the original inglenook fireplace, but are a little confused as to how the rest of the house was laid out.
Any info or photos would be greatly appreciated.

Easter Monday sees the first Tea and Cakes in the Churchyard for 2010. Delicious homemade cakes will be served at Alsop Church between 11am and 4.30pm. Last Easter the sun shone and we basked in the warmth admiring the view. Do pop in and support this event, all proceeds to Alsop Church.
