There are significant delays on the Alsop Road by Swiss Cottage, near Parwich Lees. Delays can be as long as 15 minutes. So if you are in a hurry or have an appointment then it may be best to go via Bradbourne. Kerbing is being replaced and it has been suggested that work should be finished by the end of the day – but we do not have any official information. Please keep us updated.
Latest Update
The workmen are coming back tomorrow to tarmac up to the kerbing – and intend to be finished tomorrow. Take care in the meantime round the corner as there are cones out which means the road is even narrower than usual at this point
A post has recently become available for a new “community” school governor at Parwich Primary School. If anyone within the community would be interested in becoming involved, please contact Lynne Goldsworthy (chair of governors) on 474 by Tuesday 11 May for more information.
This morning’s St. George Parade started at the Legion, with the Parwich Odd Fellows (also supported by members of the Loyal Cavendish Lodge and their banner), the Cyberscouts and the Cadets all led by Doveholes Brass Band.
The procession made it’s way (via Parwich Hall) to the Church for a rousing service. All the hymns could be belted out, and were: “Guide me, O thou great Redeemer”, “Jerusalem”, “I vow to thee, my country” and “Onward Christian Soldiers”. The Vicar, brandishing a sword, gave an address on St. George as a Christian knight.
After the service the Parade continued on round the village before adjourning to the Legion.
Thank you to the Parwich Society of St. George for organising this event. For more photos Continue Reading »
“A huge thank you to all who worked so hard to make the St George’s day service and Fair on the Green such a success today. Thanks also to all who turned out to support the event, I hope you all had a fantastic day. It’s great to see the community come together.”
This afternoon saw the very successful Fair on the Green, fundraising for the Church Restoration. There were lots of people enjoying a really fun afternoon. It was super to see Andy, our new vicar, prominent in the fundraising effort – Well done Andy and everyone else for organising a super afternoon. Further thanks to all involved in this morning’s events.

Mixed fortunes this week, but at least we broke our duck in terms of wins in one league.
Tuesday League – Home to Hathersage.
We have yet to win in this league and although we won two games and Hathersage won two, the points totals meant that overall we lost 62 to 81.
Perhaps we can try and console ourselves by thinking we have been playing the best teams so far! Hope springs eternal.
Next match – Away – Whitworth Park – 27 April.
Thursday League – Home to Bakewell.
Not only did we break our duck in terms of wins, but a new member played for the team for the first time. Perhaps he brought us luck. Bakewell are top of the league. Although we lost the Doubles games 2-1, we won the Singles games 5-1. Combining the points for all the games we won by 138 to 123. A great result.
Next match – Away – Lafage, Hope – 29 April.
Come and join us for a practise next Monday night 6.30pm ish.
PARWICH.ORG continues to attract readers from accross the World:
Good afternoon
Just wanted to tell you how delighted I was to discover your blog. I found it referred to in the Tablet, and was enchanted to read such a vibrant newsy website. I loved Sandra C’s lambs (I live in Masterton, where there are many large sheep farms, or stations as we call them). I loved also the tug of war homily of Andy Larkin.
Thank you for showing what a small community can do when it sets its mind to it.
The Environmental Quality Mark has been awarded to the Bluebell Inn and to Hoe Grange Farm and to Bent Farm. Congratulations to all three Continue Reading »
Two weeks ago, one of Ben C’s sheep had three lambs. Mum couldn’t produce enough milk for them all, so Sandra C took two of the lambs into her care. A disused kitchen cupboard was filled with straw and the lambs took up residence in the kitchen. An intensive programme of feeding began. In the beginning, Sandra and Ben fed the lambs every two hours day and night.
Two weeks later, both lambs are doing well…and the feeding is down to just (!) four times a day.
Luckily, Jasper the family dog has been very tolerant and can be found playing with the gambolling sisters.
In another month, these lambs will be ready to leave the house and head for the fields. In the meantime, we think we’d be hard pressed to find two cuter household animals in all of Parwich!
Available online or in the Sycamore, the Stunner has the following stories of local interest this week:
p.1 – Ash Cloud forces school to close – QEGs has been forced to shut for some of this week because teaching staff are stuck abroad.
p.2 – Spreading out the daffodils to flower – a story about Dorothy’s fabulous daffodils.
p.27 – May Day concert with top music – a concert will be held in Parwich on 1 May at 7.30pm in the church featuring the Essentially Brass Quintet and Christian Cartwright on the organ.
Parwich Primary School PTA is holding a coffee morning on Monday morning from 9-ish am (i.e. after school drop off) until 11-ish am at 3 Rathbone Croft (778). Phoenix Cards will be available for sale as well as cakes and local produce. Any donations of cakes, produce etc will be gratefully received. We would like as many people as possible to come and support this school fund raiser!
If you would like to make something for the home produce stall or have anything for a tombola, book stall or bric a brac then please bring them to Dam Farm or Church Farm. Thank you!
Remember the Church Fair this Sunday on The Green 1-4pm.
Lunchtime Rolls, Teas & Homemade Cakes in the Church.
I have a size small QEGS rugby shirt, still in very good condition, if there is a year 7 or 8 boy who would like a spare, or a Parwich Primary School boy who will be at QEGS next year. THIS ITEM HAS NOW BEEN SNAPPED UP!
Latest Update from your
Safer Neighbourhood Officer March/April 2010
.
.
Dear Resident
March and April has been fairly quiet regarding incidents, but nevertheless a few more have occurred since the last newsletter, so below is a brief update.
On 14/3 it was reported that an aggressive dog was on the Tissington Trail, the caller, quiet rightly was concerned for the safety of trail users. After a bit of digging regarding previous complaints, the owner of the dog was advised and the DDDC Dog Warden was informed.
A female was arrested for possession of cannabis and dealt with via a formal cannabis warning on Dovedale car park. She was discovered by an Officer on routine mobile patrol, she had walked there from Ashbourne, this was on 20/3 at approximately 1.30am
A vehicle was stolen from Thorpe area; Staffordshire Police dealt with the incident as it was on the Staffs side of the River Dove, but passed details to Derbyshire Police for observations. This is a fine example of both Constabularies working together. The theft took place on 28/3 and was reported at 19.41hrs by the owner. Enquiries are ongoing and hopefully to a successful conclusion.
On the same day a little earlier there was a RTC (road traffic collision) in the car park of the Dog and Partridge ph. There were no injuries.
East Midlands Ambulance Service (EMAS) contacted the Police to inform us that two young boys had fallen from the quad bike. They had been picked up by a kind local farmer who had taken them to his farm at Pikehall. One boy had a head injury and both were in shock. They were eventually taken to Chesterfield Hospital. Neither was wearing crash helmets, both boys were advised accordingly by the Paramedics treating their injuries. It is vital that all quad bike users wear the appropriate equipment, as this will protect them and hopefully prevent serious injury. The incident took place on private land. Many thanks to the farmer who helped the emergency services. Continue Reading »
As mentioned last week both our matches were away to Chatsworth and even if we don’t play very well and lose we still enjoy some lovely venues for our games.
Anyway, although we enjoyed ourselves at Chatsworth we unfortunately lost both the matches. The Tuesday evening team won two games and lost two, but on points count back we lost the match 73 to 60. In bowls matches ‘points mean prizes’
Similarly the Thursday team narrowly lost 135 to 131. A really good effort.
Even though we have yet to win a match we are not bottom of the leagues we play in. In the Tuesday league there are 12 teams. At the moment we are fourth from bottom.
The Thursday league has the same number of teams and we are fifth from the top.
As the saying goes it’s not the winning, but the taking part that counts. If we had some more players we may be able to do even better.
Speaking of which it was really nice to see a new face on the green on Monday night. It would be even nicer if we saw some more. Don’t forget, Mondays 6.30pm for an hour or so. You’ll love it.
With less than three weeks to go until the General Election, the political parties are campaigning ever more vigorously for your votes. But have you already made your mind? Or have you decided not to vote at all?
If you live in our area, and if are registered to vote in the Derbyshire Dales constituency, please let us know how you’re feeling in our poll. If we get a good enough response, then we may run a few more election-related polls between now and May 6th.
IMPORTANT! If you live outside our area, or if you are not registered to vote in Derbyshire Dales, then please do not vote in our poll.
As a reminder, we have candidates standing from the following six parties: Conservative, Green, Labour, Liberal Democrat, Monster Raving Loony and UK Independence.
If there is enough local interest, we are also happy to compile a list of your questions, to submit to our six candidates. We had some success with this during last year’s European elections, and would expect an even better response this time round, as the issues are a good deal “closer to home”. So please let us know whether or not you think this would be a good idea!
Yesterday I was commenting to JF-S about the beautiful blossom on one of his trees which we couldn’t identify. Later in the day he sent me a photo; I challenged him to photo some other trees and plants and within no time at all they were emailed in and here they are. Your challenge is to help identify all 14. Answers in the comment box please.
Although PARWICH.ORG is primarily written for the benefit of our local residents, we have also noticed a steady trickle of interest in our site from further afield. Over the last couple of years, more and more people have started setting up so-called “hyperlocal” community websites to cover events in their own areas, and many of them have taken a good look at what we have managed to achieve in Parwich.
Last weekend, around a hundred “hyperlocal” bloggers and other interested parties gathered together in Leeds, for the second annual “Talk About Local Unconference“. (The event was called an UN-conference, due to its relatively informal nature.) Mike A from the blog team attended the event, and met many other people from other areas of the UK who have set up successful local websites of their own.
The day ended with an awards ceremony – or rather, an UNawards ceremony! – in which PARWICH.ORG was named the winner of “The UnTourist Board Award, for a site that attracts visitors to a place”. As PARWICH.ORG has never won an award before – and who knows whether we ever will again? – we’re rather chuffed, and very grateful to the Talk About Local judging panel for thinking so kindly of our efforts.
This year Open Gardens will be on Sunday 20th June, 2-6pm. If you are willing to open your garden this year, please ring Dot H on 456 by the beginning of May or email parwich@hotmail.co.uk and we will forward your emails.
If you enjoy classical music there is a concert on Friday in Matlock at Highfields School at 7.30pm. It features a group called Partita, who perform songs and instrumental music from the 12th to 18th century. Their programme will include music by Purcell, Vivaldi and Handel.
These concerts are organised by Matlock Music, the have approximately 6 concerts a year and individual tickets are £10 and free for under 18’s. It really is incredible value for money to have this opportunity to listen to professional musicians.
The next concert will be Friday 11th June with a violin and piano recital.
Also remember to reserve May 1st , music that night will really be on our doorstep: at the Church. A brass and organ recital in aid of Parwich Church Restoration Fund. The concert starts at 7.30pm and tickets are £5-7.50 including refreshments, children £1
This week and throughout the weekend has been a busy time for the plasterers; the meeting room and kitchen are fully plastered and the main hall is almost completed. Acoustic board is being fitted to the ceiling in the hall to improve overall sound quality. By Tuesday the plastering should be completed, as should the outside low level roofing.
Although two of our teachers are stranded abroad, unable to get home because of the Icelandic volcano ash hovering over Europe, our headteacher and both teaching assistants are in the UK and we have been able to get supply staff for this week so the school will be open.
And thanks to Debbie for letting us know that QEGs is closed Monday.
Many of you will have seen the recent article on this subject on the Parwich Village website and several of you have expressed an interest in discussing your insurance needs with an independent insurance broker, either in a surgery format or individually.
As a result we have arranged to come to Parwich on Tuesday 11 May and Bryan Elliott and I will be in the Sycamore Inn from 5pm onwards. The Wilson Organisation has strong relationships with many insurance companies and this means we can offer bespoke cover, which will cater for your individual circumstances, at competitive premiums. We have researched Parwich and the surrounding areas and we are confident we can help. Please come along and see us. Please email to confirm your interest and a suitable time from 5pm onwards on 11th May.
