Residents should be extra vigilant following a report of a suspicious male going door to door trying to sell items from a holdall in the Ashbourne area, shortly before midday on Wednesday 23rd June.
He was seen to approach a property on Windmill Lane and before knocking on the door he tried the door handle. When challenged, he left heading towards Kniveton and is reported to have gone to many houses. He is described as a white male, aged mid 20’s, 5’6″ tall, close shaven head, wearing a t-shirt and carrying a large holdall.
Ensure that your homes are secure. Any sightings of this man or any other suspicious persons/vehicles in the area, please call 0345 123 33 33, quoting incident number: 283 of 23.6.10.

In the middle of this heat wave what an earth are doing talking about a White Christmas, well read on and click this link.
As it is official now we can reveal that Tom Chambers will be taking the leading role in Irving Berlin’s classic ‘White Christmas’, an exciting challenge, as Tom will be taking up the role once performed by Bing Crosby. It was due to be staged at the London Palladium, but the theatre is having to be ‘revamped’ for the Wizard of Oz and ‘Dorothy’. ‘White Christmas’ will be shown at the Empire Theatre, Sunderland, a 2200 seater theatre which is the largest theatre outside of London. The show be on from 19th November to New Year’s Day.

The bell dates back to 1804, made in Chesterfield, and had not been removed since the church was built (it pre-dates the current church). The bell hangers had to cut a trap door in the floor, and lower the bell to the ground with a pulley. Now it is off to the bell foundry to have new fixings and bearings, and due to return on the 19th July.

Sam Flowers’ garden, a wonderful array of vegetables that would be the envy of many. A little bird has whispered that Sam celebrated his 92 last week and is probably the most senior man in the village.

It was clear that on the day of planting there were problems with the standard of the plants and soil. The committee immediately expressed their dissatisfaction, and from that moment have been liaising with the Landscaping Company and Wildgoose, but unfortunately things always take longer when you have to pursue things in a professional manner.
Today, 20 tons of topsoil were delivered. Some of the beds have been excavated to remove the soil, whilst others have had smaller amounts of soil removed before being topped up and the beds at the rear are having their soil levels generally raised. The beds excavated by the community notice board were done so in an attempt to remove as much of the existing bindweed as possible and minimise this problem. The landscaping company has removed the majority of the shrubs; new ones will be sourced, inspected, planted and bark mulch will be added to all beds. It will be several weeks before the planting is redone.

We have received the following message from Jean Compton:
Following on from the recent most enjoyable skills day in Church, the idea has been put forward to create a worked collage/ embroidery of the village to celebrate village life, and to mark the beginning of a new decade. It is hoped that this could then be hung in the Church
We would now like to see if there are others in the village who would like to join with us in this activity – either with the sewing (any form – embroidery, gold work etc.) or with suggestions for designs to be included in the project. We would hope to have as many people as possible involved in the project – I have been reassured that no knowledge is required and any necessary skills can be taught!
Do come and join us at Jill Simpson’s house on Tuesday, 6th July at 7.30pm to take this forward. You can contact any one of us to discuss this further, or just let us know on 529 if you are interested. You can also discuss it with Jill Simpson, Ann Knight, or Mandy Noble.

There were some wonderful entries in the Parwich Horticultural Society Childrens’ Show this year. It was clear that a lot of hard work and imagination had gone into the entries. Many thanks to the children (and parents!) who worked so hard to create such a fine set of exhibits. Well done especially to all those who won prizes!

The new Memorial Hall was put to good use during Parwich Open Gardens this Sunday. It was great to see so many people buying plants, playing tombola, enjoying tea and scones in the main hall and drinking up the sunshine on the new terrace. Hard-working volunteers in the kitchen enjoyed the extra space and found the continuous hot water and ‘4 minute’ dishwasher to be of enormous use given the demand.
Below are a few pictures showing the new facility in action. Note the Children’s Show will be covered in another post.

Here is the first of several photo galleries of Sunday’s Open Gardens and Childrens’ Horticultural Show. The weather remained fine and sunny throughout, ensuring that plenty of visitors turned up to enjoy the fourteen gardens on display. This was also the first major public event to take place in our new Memorial Hall, and trade was brisk throughout the afternoon, with many people opting to take advantage of the sunny patio area on the south side of the building.

To coincide with Parwich Open Gardens, a selection of floral photographs are being put on sale. These photographs have all been taken in Parwich, and they can be purchased framed or unframed. All proceeds will be donated to Parwich Horticultural Society.
The photographs can be viewed and purchased in the Memorial Hall on Sunday afternoon. Additional copies can be ordered, using the order forms provided in the hall. Alternatively, you can place your orders by calling Kevin on 390503.
A limited number of early orders can be processed on Sunday. All other orders will be processed by Sunday June 27th.

PTA Coffee Morning

On Tuesday of this week (22nd) our 19th century bell in the Church is being removed for renovation work. The fixings of the bell have become worn out, and the bell was in danger of falling on our heads! We would like to thank all of you who have supported the Church through our concerts and other events; this has enabled us to raise the necessary £4000+ to have the repair work done.
Do come along on Tuesday morning from 10am onwards to see how it is going to be removed from the tower, with ropes and pulleys and two willing parishioners, and wave to it on its way to a Leicester bell foundry.

Week commencing 14 June 2010.
Oh dear. Two away matches, two defeats. At least the sun was shining both days!
Tuesday League – Away – Buxton Park.
As mentioned last week it was just as well we had had a good win. Buxton are top of our league and their green is very ‘tricky’ indeed. Last week we won and our opponents got 59 points. This week the scores were reversed. We lost 59 to 81. The score was not as bad as we had anticipated though. We are half way through the season (can’t believe it) so the fixtures are reversed. Let us hope we can get a few points back at home next week.
Next match – Home – Buxton Park B – 22 June 6.30
Thursday League – Away – Tideswell.
Again this is a really lovely venue and although we lost it was a gorgeous sunny day. We lost the doubles games 2 to 1, but won the singles 4 to 2. This gave a aggregate score of 132 to 121. At the start of play we were fifth in the league so hopefully with this reasonable away score we will stay in that position. All will be revealed in the fullness of time.
Next match – Away – Wirksworth – 24 June. 1.30 ish.
The friendly against Ellastone was marred by the rain, but the food was great! No matches this weekend as it is all hands to the pump for ‘Open Gardens’. It’s still not too late for baking scones for the cream teas!

The Memorial Hall has now been handed over to the committee, and as with any new development there are of course a number of issues that still have to be sorted. This period of time is called snagging in the trade and has been going on throughout this week.
To update you on the hole in the car park, the leak in the heating system is sorted, and the complete commission of this will take place on Monday. There will be a complete new car park relaid shortly.
The landscaping that was featured in an earlier photo diary was halted, as the committee are not happy with the quality of the soil, plants and planting by the contractors. This issue is being pursued by the committee in conjunction with Peak Park.
The photo below shows the rear with the newly seeded grass crete, by the Legion. This section will be taped off for the next few weeks to allow the grass seed to grow.

Thankyou so much for all your cards, messages, phone calls, visits and offers of practical help. We have been overwhelmed by all your expressions of love and support, and they have been a great comfort to Andrew, and me.
What a wonderful village we live in, Parwich is a very special place and you are all very special people. Thankyou, thankyou for your friendship and for helping Andrew through this very difficult time. He has had his first ten days of chemotherapy, with all its side effects, but he is gradually starting to eat again and to feel a little better. It lifts his spirits every day when I take him your cards and messages, and share the life of the village with him. All being well, he will be allowed out of hospital for a week or so before starting the second month of chemotherapy, possibly next week.

One of our readers has suggested that we start up a new section on this site, dedicated to car-sharing requests.
So, for example, if someone is going to Derby, Ashbourne, Bakewell, Matlock – or even further afield – they could post the information here, along with a phone number or other contact details.
This would also work the other way, so that anyone needing a lift could also post a request. Requests could also be posted on behalf of friends, neighbours and relatives who do not have internet access.
Examples:
- Spaces available in car going to Ashbourne at 10:00am on Friday 25th June – John, tel. xxx
- Lift wanted from Derby station at 6:00pm on Thursday 24th June – Mary, tel. xxx
As for sharing of any petrol costs, this would be left to the discretion of the drivers and passengers.

1) Committee and Sub-groups – your volunteer teams have yet again shown fantastic commitment through their time given to fund raising and ensuring good detail design and quality in the build.
2) Day-to-day running of Hall
- Cinema – continued success using the Church, with thanks to them for allowing this to continue.
- Insurances for new Hall now in place so Hall and Committee members are suitably protected
- Bookings’ Secretary is again taking bookings and reports that there has been a good level of interest for when the Hall is finished.
- Stepping Stones will finish their term at Bradbourne, to give them time to move all their equipment back in the summer holiday for a September start in Parwich.
- Booking rates have increased as reported last year – local rates have increased by £1 or £2, non-local have increased by £5 & a new commercial rate has been introduced. Continue Reading »
