UPDATE: This hardly needs saying, but just in case there is any confusion: the following news item is complete and utter made-up codswallop. So, was anyone April Fooled? Even for a split-second? Nope, thought not…!
As part of our new series of linking bird photography with sound recordings, we have recently had a major new development: a combined sighting and recording of a very rare subspecies of Song Thrush.
Ornithologists out there will know that three subspecies of Song Thrush are recognized throughout Europe. The male’s song, which is given from trees, rooftops or other elevated perches, is a loud clear run of musical phrases, repeated two to four times (“filip filip filip codidio codidio quitquiquit tittit tittit tereret tereret tereret”) and interspersed with grating notes and mimicry. An individual male may have a repertoire of more than 100 phrases, many copied from its parents and neighbouring birds. The Song Thrush is also a very gifted mimic and has been known to imitate man-made objects such as telephones.
Over recent years, the repeated use of mimicry has led to a proposal to classify a fourth subspecies of Song Thrush. At some time during the last sixty years, a Thrush was able to mimic part of Mozart’s Queen of The Night aria, as sung by Florence Foster Jenkins (the famously atrocious soprano) and was then able to pass this song on to its offspring. There are now thought to be several hundred of this subspecies, living mainly in Scandinavia.
Just like their close cousins the Redwing, the recent freezing weather has cause this very rare Jenkins Thrush to migrate south, and only last week we were able to record one singing near the Cuckoo Gate. This is a very exciting event for local ornithologists, and PARWICH.ORG is proud to provide you with an exclusive preview of this unique recording.

On the back of the letter that we received from Severn Trent re. the water repairs on Saturday, there is a form for claiming compensation if they don’t restore services by the stated time.
Could we encourage people to claim, and then give the money to the people who were flooded? I know of at least two – they had turned taps on and forgotten about them, and then had floods during the night after the water was restored and overflowed the basins. (I suspect the water pressure is higher now than it was before.)

Again the builders have been working 7 days a week, with 6 guys in today. This week has seen the completion of the main roof, which is fully tiled and has two solar panels on the rear. The small structure in the middle of the roofline, when finished will be the ventilation system for the hall, and will be placed in situ by crane.
The carpenters have finished the floor for the high level storage above the hall, this area is designated for items such as scenery flats, costumes etc for future stage productions (calling all thespians, get your thinking caps on).
The plasters have been prepping the hall ready for plastering this week. Plumbing, electrical work and further insulation continues, as does the external pointing on the stonework.

The next meeting of Parwich Parish Council is Tuesday 30th March at 7-30pm in the Cricket Pavilion at Parson’s Croft. This is the April meeting, but is early to avoid clashing with the holiday weekend.
As always the first ten minutes of the meeting are open to comments and questions from members of the public, who may also attend but not participate in the remainder of the meeting.

Water was switched off in Parwich today. Seven Trent switched on the water at 2pm, but unfortunately the water has not reached the village yet. Seven Trent are currently driving around the village trying to find the problem/leak. They will do everything they can, as soon as they can but………..

Hi following our posting last week regarding has ‘Anyone Found a chocolate and cream cat?’ – as some of you may have noticed by our subsequent comment we found Sasha but she’s been quite badly injured.
She’s back home now, and we’ve borrowed a puppy crate from the vets, but as she needs to be in there for approximately 6 weeks were wondering if anyone has a crate that we can borrow. The crate needs to be large enough for her bed, litter tray and food and water bowls. If anyone has one that we could borrow for this period of time that would be great.

No, PARWICH.ORG hasn’t signed up to Twitter! This “tweeting” is of an altogether more traditional kind. Kevin S. explains further:
We have been very lucky on this blog to have some excellent bird photography, supplied by John F-S and several other local snappers. Having recently met Alan Burbidge, Vice Chairman of the Wildlife Sound Recording Society (WSRS), I realised there could be a great opportunity to attach recordings of bird song to relevant photos on the blog.
The WSRS is a group of about 300 members who are interested in recording sounds from nature, thus helping to further the appreciation and understanding of animal language.
Their website has a lot of information about how the recordings are made, numerous articles about bird song and a section where recordings can be heard. The quality of these recordings are amazing. I particularly liked the European Tree Frogs and Eider Ducks.
Alan has kindly supplied us with a couple of recordings, which we have linked to a couple of John’s photos. To listen to them, please click on each picture.
In the future, we will try to link relevant recordings to other photographs as they appear on the blog.

Skills Celebration Day

It dawned on us recently how blest our village is with individuals with the most extraordinary range of talents and interests – from painters, through quilters, potters, bee keepers, metal detector researchers, meteorologists, caterers, flower arrangers, to record producers! – sometimes skills quite hidden from view.
We would like to put on a day in the church celebrating some of our talents and interests – and maybe arrange lessons in these skills in the future.

p6 – Free flood alerts when river rises – People in Derbyshire affected by flooding will receive free alerts by the Environment Agency, that should include approximately 24,000 properties.
p6 – Police Officers receive awards for their work in town – PC Ian Cooper, who used to be our community officer, was awarded this commendation for saving a man’s life.
p18 – New book examines days out with a hint of folklore – The author Denis Eardley writes that Parwich was mentioned in the Domesday Book and how the Romans had a presence in the area because of the ‘attractive’ mineral deposits. Pottery fragments have been found in the region and the name itself is thought to be derived from Roman orgins.
p28 – Ready to stage Annie – A photo of Amy G who is part of the cast of this talented group of youngsters from Stagecoach Uttoxeter who will be performing Annie this weekend.
p47 – Parwich Legion lost in dominoes to Wheel Wanders in the Ashbourne Darts League, Division 4.
p48 – Victory served on a plate for U10’s – Ashbourne U 10’s came home with the NDL plate after taking on the best in Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire and Derbyshire. Bertie L broke down the blindside to score an excellent try in the corner.

We have received the following enquiry from A. Jackson, regarding the history of Alsop Hall.
I have a query about Alsop Hall and the family that resided there.
I recently bought two books, both with inscriptions on the inside. The first (called Lost Gip by Hesba Stretton) has the following inside: “To John, from Mrs Heald, Alsop Hall, Derbyshire“. Could you tell me anything about both these names? Probably written around the 1900s (due to the age of the book).
The second book I believe to be from the same place, as they were purchased from the same stall, are the same age and by the same publisher. The second is inscribed: “Awarded to Jane Lamb for lessons and attendance in the year 1900.” Again (although the books may in fact not be linked), could anyone tell me anything of this Jane Lamb?
I realise family histories are hard to track, but I’m intrigued to know something of these three people: John, Mrs Heald and Jane Lamb.

Caroline Rodgers (headteacher of the primary school) and I (Lynne Goldsworthy, chair of governors of the primary school) were taken on a tour this lunchtime of the building site that is very fast turning into the new village memorial hall. The space and facilities that the school will be able to use really amazed and excited both of us. The hall will benefit the village school children hugely and, as we were walking round the site, we were already planning what we could do with the space.
One of the most obvious uses will be as an indoor sports facility for the children – they will be able to use it for indoor badminton, 5-a-side football, basketball, hockey, netball, gymnastics, dance etc. etc. The school will also be able to use it as an extended learning facility, for assemblies, for end of term productions, the list is endless.
The teaching staff will be visiting the hall shortly to enable them to start planning for its use. Governors of the school will also be invited to have a look around to see what a fabulous facility this will be for the school. We will be the envy of all the other village schools in the area and are very excited about being able to start using the hall as early as next term!
