Following the photographs of Townhead House in a post last year, thank you to Eileen Brownson for sending us several photographs of an oil painting of the house:
Eileen indicates that this is one of several pictures that
were painted by my Gd Mother Fanny (Brooks) Brownson The little girl was my Auntie Laura Brownson They are oil paintings, we have them here, unfortunately some are badly damaged, my daughter JoAnn has had a few repaired but that is very expensive, the other pictures are of Scottish cattle, I didn’t include those. All are signed by my gd mother and dated, barely recognizable. Glad you can share them with everyone interested.
Given the difficulties in photographing paintings here is another shot of the same view. Continue Reading »
This letter is currently in the process of being posted to all members of the community.
To all members of the communities of Parwich, Ballidon, Alsop-en le Dale and Pike Hall:
You will have heard the great news just before Christmas that Parwich has been awarded £500,000 by the Big Lottery Fund towards our new memorial hall. This is the maximum grant that has been awarded in the country. The team were particularly pleased by the comment from the BLF representative that it was one of the most impressive bids that they had received. This means that we really can have our long awaited hall – BUT we need more help.
Read on to find out the current state of play, including all funding details.
The list will be updated again next month. Until then, you will be able to find it on the USEFUL INFO page, and in the ELSEWHERE ON PARWICH.ORG section on the right hand side of this page.
The afternoon included visits to the Pub and the School, followed by a series of meetings in the Memorial Hall. Thank you to everyone who participated in the visit and helped report back. Here are our write ups of most of those sessions, and we will add reports on the remaining when/if they become available: Continue Reading »
By now many of you in the village will have received information relating to the appeal for funds to repair various areas of the church. To this end it has been suggested that a calendar of events be publicised for this year and a small group within the PCC has met and agreed a number of events.
We very much hope that these will be enjoyable occasions and that you will support as many as you can, seeing them as both fund-raising and social opportunities. Continue Reading »
Welcome back to a new term and a new year.

A special welcome to Maisy H who has joined us on Thursdays. Continue Reading »
On Tuesday Parwich had two mentions in the Derby Evening Telegraph (sorry we did not pick up the links earlier):
an update on those still out of their homes because of last September’s flooding (click here to read the article).
a note on Tuesday’s Peak District National Park Authority’s visit to the village (click here to read the article). Currently we are gathering comments from the groups involved to post a report on the day here at PARWICH.ORG.
Derby Evening Telegraph are seeking nominations for their 2009 Community Champions awards. Evening Telegraph editor Steve Hall said:
The Community Champions awards gives us the chance to recognise the work of those who have helped improve the lives of others and asked for nothing in return.
The nominations last year were fantastic and I’m sure that the standard this year will be just as high.
There are a few items relating to our immediate area this week:

A coach is being organised for those who wish to attend the licensing service at St. Mary’s church, Nottingham on Sunday 22nd February at 3.30 pm. The cost will be £6 for adults and £3 for children – please enter your name on the list in the church if you wish to come.
The sun and frost in recent days have been especially dramatic – there are also a lot of natural sounds to listen to when all else is still in the village!
There were a couple of thefts locally last night including items stolen from a car in the Creamery Lane/Church Walk area. We will provide more information when the Police report comes in, but in the meantime be on your guard and if you saw anything suspicious contact Derbyshire Police on Tel: 0345 123 3333
Parwich Primary School is again participating in Bag 2 School, where good quality second hand clothing is exchanged for money. This is a fantastic fundraiser for us and a great way for you to create space in your wardrobe for all the new things you have been picking up in the sales. Bring your unwanted adults’ and children’s clothing, bedding, curtains, soft toys, shoes, belts and handbags to School. Last time we raised about £100 (with a collection of ½ tonne) but will get better terms for this repeat collection (£300 per tonne) so start looking out your contribution.
Children take your blue bags to School on Monday 26th Jan or by 9am on the Tuesday. Everyone else please leave your unwanted adults’ and children’s clothing, bedding, curtains, soft toys, shoes, belts and handbags in the School porch on the afternoon of Monday 26th January ready for collection on the next day.
Places are strictly limited due to the space available in the hall. However if you would like to go on a waiting list in case anyone drops out – or if you would like to put your name down for the next course which we are hoping to arrange please phone 390 529 or email martin@orchidserve.com.

The photo below is another of dawn today: “Red sky in the morning …” Will weather law hold good? Definitely a change on the way, the frost has gone for the time being at least.
To take advantage of the discount, PDHS members please let me have your 2009 Suttons Seeds orders before 20th January.
Remember there is generally 45% off seed orders and 10% off other catalogue items.
Thanks
Dot
PS Let me know if you need a catalogue (tel. 456).
Given the Horticultural Society membership is only £2 per year, you are into profit with orders of as little as £4-50. Save twice: first on your seed orders, and second on the flowers and vegetables you produce.
As temperatures dropped well below -6 degrees, a posse of intrepid Parwichians gathered on The Green by The Church around 7pm on Friday evening hoping to stoke the boiler with tasty fish and chips. Hopes were high! It was Friday night!
As the minutes ticked by, villagers’ hope turned to doubt and then annoyance as the chip van failed to turn up. Eventually, some headed pubwards, others went to the shop whilst others just went home to search the cupboard for anything edible.
As reliability is an important requirement for a chip van, we wonder whether we can find some way for our chippie to let us know for sure whether the van will turn up next Friday……..
Leaders from the Peak District National Park Authority will be holding a community visit to Parwich on Tuesday 13 January.
The aim of the day is for us to come and listen to local people to find out the key issues for the community – to find out what is going well, what needs improving and areas where we can work together in the future.
The people coming will be:
Jim Dixon, chief executive
Councillor Irene Ratcliffe, deputy chair of the authority and a county councillor (part of her constituency covers the Parwich area).
Dan Yates, village officer
John Fern, head of communications
The itinerary will be:
1.30pm – 2pm: Visit to Sycamore Inn to meet landlady Janet Gosling.
2:15pm – 3.30pm: Parwich Primary School. Meeting headteacher Caroline Rodgers, some governors and parents.
From this point on all the meetings will be in Parwich Memorial Hall.
3:45pm – 4:15pm: Parwich website (parwich.org) – Meeting Mike Atkinson and Peter Trewhitt.
4:15pm – 5pm: Parwich Village Action Group – Meeting Peter Trewhitt, Lynette Coyne and other committee members.
5pm – 6pm: Meeting some of the Parwich Memorial Hall Management Committee, including secretary Amanda Johnson.
6pm – 7pm: Meeting parish councillors from Parwich Parish Council, Eaton & Alsop Parish Council and Ballidon & Bradbourne Parish Council and any interested members of the public.
Members of the public are welcome to attend the session between 6pm and 7pm at the memorial hall.
Anyone who is unable to make the event can send questions or comments to parwich.org (either as a comment below or via email to parwich@hotmail.co.uk) to be passed on to us on the day. Alternatively, they could talk to representatives from the groups we are meeting and ask them to pass on their comments.

There are still a limited number of places left on Jo-anne’s Make-up Workshop, which is being held at the Bentley Brook from 10.30 to 4.30 on Saturday 10th January.
The workshop consists of a full day’s make-up course and costs £125, which includes coffee and lunch.

The first edition for 2009 of “The Stunner” is, like last week a little on the thin side. Obviously not too much news around. So this week the links to Parwich are slightly more tenuous. To read this week’s e-edition online click here.
p1. “New Year brings new sighting of ‘black beast’“, as spotted by Ralph, founder of the Y-Not-Festival held near Pikehall. p2.“Monitoring crime on your patch.” – A new police website is aiming to keep us informed on crime rates. Tissington Safer Neighbourhood area (covers Parwich) statistics state that crime is down by 11.1%. p7. “Time to recycle your Christmas tree” Derbyshire Dales Council are encouraging recycling. Put your tree out at the edge of your property by 7am on your “green” collection day between 5th & 30th January, and as long as it is no higher than 5ft it will be collected, otherwise chop it down to size.

Derbyshire Police are appealing for volunteers to help train new Special Constables. They are trained initially for 7 weeks at Force Headquarters, Ripley at the week-ends. Throughout, they are assessed through a series of practical policing exercises, and we require people to assist in acting out of these scenarios. Including public order offences, first aid, traffic offences and others. No previous acting experience is necessary but volunteers need to be available on certain weekends during part of the day. We are arranging an open evening at Force Headquarters Training School on Thursday 22nd January from 7.30pm. till approx. 8.30. Light refreshments will be provided.
Please contact PC Mark Freel or Sandra Haycock on 01773 572785 or 01773 572130.
We have had some lovely photos sent into us from Penny, the Parwich Pre-School leader. This photo shows Penny with Felicity, her assistant and some of our pre-schoolers.
Gorgeous lunchtime skies with trees silhouetted on the horizon whilst walking along Monsdale Lane. It was pretty treacherous underfoot, rather like a skating rink walking up the Pikehall Road, one lorry even had to be towed up the hill by a tractor.
Christmas cards with a religious theme are wanted for recycling into new cards – Liz Round of Thorpe knows a nun who would be grateful for any such cards which you can give her. So instead of throwing them away, please give them to me, and I will take them to Liz.

p.s. Sainsbury’s will reycle all your other Christmas Cards until 13th January.
