Middleton Top and Leawood Pump

Yesterday’s Local History Society trip was a great success.  We started at Middleton Top, where the stationary engine was working.  When the Cromford & High Peak Railway (now the High Peak Trail) was build in the late 1820s, to join the Cromford Canal to the Peak Forest Canal at Whaley Bridge, they did not have a set idea of what a railway should be.  Continue Reading »

Parwich on TV

East Midlands Today is broadcasting short interviews with Stuart, Phyllis, Shannon, and Nikki & Giles when they were watching ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ in the Sycamore on Saturday.  There are also some general shots of the village and of the pub interspersed with clips of Tom and Camilla’s jive, which has got them through to the next round.

Many thanks for the following information from Lynn Burrows, the Peak District National Park Ranger for our area:

The Peak District National Park Authority’s Area Team in the Parwich, Ballidon and Alsop en le Dale area

The Peak District National Park Authority’s Ranger Service
provides a crucial link between the authority and the local community – relaying information, complaints and compliments. We also carry out much of the work on the ground in local communities for the National Park Authority.

The Peak District National Park Authority has two main jobs:

  • To take care of the landscape, wildlife and culture of the Peak District so that it will be here for future generations to enjoy
  • And to provide opportunities for people to understand and enjoy this fabulous and inspiring landscape.

This is supported by a third aim which is to help sustain the communities that live within the Peak District.

As rangers this means that we are involved in a wide variety of activities and in the recent past I have carried out the following type of work in your area: Continue Reading »

Road safety night at the Bluebell.

Shirley’s Driving School are hosting a road safety event at 7:30pm on Tuesday (October 7th) at the Bluebell Inn, on the A515 at Tissington.

The event is open to past and present pupils, their parents, and pupils and parents from any other driving schools.

There will be a talk from Ashbourne fire service, chips and a raffle.

For the third year running, Sotheby’s of London are staging Beyond Limits: a selling exhibition of modern and contemporary sculpture in the gardens of Chatsworth House.

This year’s display includes sculptures by Salvador Dali, Marc Quinn, Zadok Ben-David, Lynn Chadwick, Robert Indiana, Zaha Hadid, Richard Hudson and many more.

Our favourites this year were Marc Quinn’s giant bronze baby (“Planet”), which sits at the near end of the lake, and Robert Indiana’s “The American Love”, which sits at the far end. We were also very much taken by Jedd Novatt’s more abstract – and endlessly fascinating – “Chaos Vascos II”.

The exhibition runs until November 2nd and comes highly recommended – particularly on a clear, bright afternoon, when the sunlight displays the works to their best advantage.

(Hover your cursor over each image to reveal its title, and click on each image to enlarge it.)

Which sculpture is your favourite? Please let us know in the comments.

One point in it

Based purely on the judges’ voting, Austin’s jive scored just one point more than Tom’s, putting Tom and Camilla in second place. Telephone voting has now closed, and the final results of this round can be seen this evening (Sunday) on BBC1 at 8:10pm.

To view this video clip in high quality, full screen mode:

  • Double-click on the video screen.
  • Select “watch in high quality”.
  • Click the “full screen” button, which is second from the right at the bottom of the video window.

You can also view the full show via the BBC iPlayer.

Vote for Tom

Come along to the Sycamore Inn this evening (6-45 to 8pm Saturday 4th Oct) to cheer Tom on.  BBC East Midlands will be filming and chip butties will follow the programme.

Stop Press: According to “well-informed sources” (guess who?), Tom and Camilla will be Couple Number Six in tonight’s draw, with their arch-rivals Austin Healey and Erin Boag drawn as Couple Number One. They will be dancing the jive, and the rumour mill suggests that the music could be a chart-topping Michael Jackson hit from 1991. (Oops, we were wrong!) Tom’s fiancée Clare will be cheering him on in the studio audience, along with all the bridesmaids-to-be; watch out for their specially made badges!

Phone lines are open between the end of the dancing (aprox. 8pm)
and 9-30pm on Saturday 4th Oct

Tom’s week in the papers

Tom has again had good media coverage this week:

Woman

  • Mon Sep 29, pages 8-9: Dance Away with Strictly’s Camilla.
Includes ‘Strictly Wardrobe Wars’ and ‘Our Strictly double date’.
This focuses on Camilla’s costumes and has a small item on Tom and his fiancée Clare’s double date with Camilla and her boyfriend Kevin Sacre of Hollyoaks fame.)

TV Times

  • Sep 27 to Oct 3, pages 12-13: Tom Chambers: Strictly love.
Including a couple of excellent photos of Tom and Clare, this talks about how the couple met and that their wedding date has had to be altered because of Strictly Come Dancing.

Outstanding Osteopathy

After a long time with a pretty severe back problem and lots of money spent trying to cure it, I have found an ace!  Stephen Marshall at Peak Osteopathy (Alport near Youlgreave) Tel 01629 636997.  He has straightened me out and I fell as right as rain at last.

Thank you to Don for giving us this invaluable information.

I would also like to say how much I have been helped  with a hip problem, from being in regular discomfort and needing cortisone injections, now I am currently pain free since being “worked over” by Stephen.

When you ring you need to leave a message and he is excellent about ringing you back promptly – as he works from home he will often be able to slot you in when other osteopaths make you wait for several days.  Another advantage with Stephen is that he is honest with you about how many sessions you might have to attend and whether or not it is a problem that he can help you with.  He is also very local.

Help publicise the Snail Trail

The new date for the fund raising Snail Trail is Saturday 25th October.  If you have not already booked in your stall please contact Barbara on 279 as soon as possible.  Also can you help publicise this event by printing out posters and taking them out and about with you?

If you can help, click on the poster below to access it as a pdf that can be easily printed out on A4, then select the print icon in the tool bar.  Please put the poster up anywhere you visit in the surrounding area where people might be interested (e.g. work places, colleges, shops, garden centres).  The more people that know about it the more successful the event will be.

Visit Shrewsbury

There are still some seats left on the Parwich Over 60s trip to Shrewsbury on Tuesday 14th October.  You don’t have to be over 60 to come along.

Contact Alan L on 279 for more details or to reserve your seat(s).

Strictly Come Voting

This week’s competition is with the male celebrities at 6-45pm on BBC1, Saturday (4th October).  Tom and Camilla are doing the Jive.

To vote for Tom & Camilla ring

between the end of the show and 9-30pm on the Saturday evening (watch the show to confirm these details).  This round’s results will be announced on the Sunday show (5th October) which starts at 8-10pm on BBC1.

Everyone is welcome to watch the Saturday Show at the Sycamore Inn (national community pub of the year 2008) on the specially provided wide screen TV, to cheer Tom on and to share the chip butties.  Radio Derby and the Derby Evening Telegraph are also to be there this week.

Consall Gardens

Martin C also has passed on this tip from his mother-in-law, Joan S (moved to Ashbourne but not forgotten), that Consall Gardens in Staffordshire are well worth visiting.  The Gardens are open every Wednesday, Sunday and Bank Holiday from Good Friday to the end of October, so there is still time to visit before the end of the mseason.  Would this be a good destination for a future Horticultural Society trip?

On reclaimed industrial land this 70 acres of landscape garden are the creation of one man, William Podmore, over many years.  There is interest through out the year.  Continue Reading »

Manure poisoning vegetables!

Do you know about this weed killer that can be found in manure, and that damages vegetables?

Martin C asked us to check if people are aware of the risk from some manure to garden plants.  One particular hormone based weedkiller, aminopyralid, used by some farmers, can stay active in grass even after going through a horse’s digestive system.  Gardeners have recently been finding typical signs of damage with curled leaves (see photo from the RHS site) in their plants, particularly vegetables.

Gardeners’ Question Time’s Chris Beardshaw says, ‘It’s potentially a huge problem which can affect ornamental plants as well as vegetables.’ Continue Reading »

Saturday – Bulk Rubbish Collection

On Saturday morning it is the bulk rubbish collection, the dustcart picks up at various points in the village.  Even if you only have a small amount to get rid of, it is better to use this facility, so that we can always justify its importance to the village.

Next collection date – Saturday 22nd November

Tonight on the Claudia Winkleman ‘It Takes Two‘ show on BBC 2 at 6-30pm it seems there is to be a bit of banter between Tom and Austin re their fun rivalry, and then (probably) some good luck messages from Rosy and nephews Oliver and Charlie.

All can be seen subsequently on ‘I’ Player, as it was amusing last night as Tom and Clare turned up in Oxford St at the Gary Rhodes book signing so Tom said to just check he was not canvassing for Strictly votes.

Click on the above picture to see last night’s episode, which also contains a slot on Tom and Camilla’s rehearsals (it will be on-line for 6 days)

Click on the following link to access all the recent episodes of ‘It Takes Two’.

Also in the Sycamore Inn this Saturday Night we hope to watch the Strictly episode and Tom’s Jive. A few Chip Butties will follow.

Stuart

The kneeler project so far.

The kneelers in St Peters Church are in a rather sorry state, so Irene Wilton kindly sponsored the purchase of the first 13 replacement embroidered kneelers in memory of Ambrose– these are in the process of being sewn up.

We now have a further kits each waiting for a sponsor. Would you like to sponsor a kneeler? Each kit costs £35.

We can customise the kneeler to include your own dedication – for example someone you wish to remember, a special date or anniversary, a christening, a village group etc. If you choose to sponsor a kneeler, you can either make it up yourself, or our team of embroiderers can do it for you.

If there is sufficient demand further kneelers can be commissioned and it may also be possible to incorporate your own design.

If you are interested, please speak to the churchwardens – Helen Pitts (362) or Martin (529)

Bob Matthews Quiz – 9th Oct

Shrub Sale

A quiet anniversary.

Officially speaking, PARWICH.ORG is not much more than six months old – but strictly speaking, we’re a little older than that.

Exactly a year ago today, with no fanfare and no publicity, the very first test post appeared on this blog. It was a modest piece, which simply linked to a 1975 news feature on the notorious “Red House Raid” that had recently re-surfaced on the web.

Although four more posts appeared on the same day, this was followed by two months of “radio silence”, while we went away and discussed the pros and cons of running a village blog.

Would people read it? Would they contribute to it? Would there even be enough to write about?

As we could only find two other village blogs in the country – neither of which were being regularly updated – we could only hazard a guess, and take a leap of faith into untested waters.

Twelve months, 775 posts and 1,026 comments later (not to mention the 50+ “static” pages elsewhere on the site), it does rather look as if the experiment has paid off. And so, if you’ll allow us a brief moment of self-congratulation…

Happy Birthday to us!

Indian Summer?

What wonderful weather we have had over the weekend. Here are a few photos taken from Parwich Hill on Sunday afternoon to prove it’s not always lashing it down! Click on each picture to see it enlarged.

The Mystery of the Disappearing Swan

When we first moved to the village we were intrigued by the swan that always was present on the water on the left-hand side of the B5056   between the Bentley Brook & Bradbourne Mill.  It obviously didn’t take us that long to suss out that it was plastic, albeit pretty realistic looking.  Visitors who came to stay often would remark on it.  But when did it disappear?  Was it the recent flood-waters that washed it away?  If so, where is it now?

A tea time visitor

Just wanted to send you a photo of our little visitor who comes to share his/her tea with the cats most evenings.

Best regards
Robert and Cheryl

Sadly the rain free days (15 so far) are due to end next week.

Misdirected mail.

A letter addressed to Mrs J Bolton and a package addressed to Mr S Woods have been delivered to Creamery Cottage during the week. Neither the letter nor the package look like junk mail, and so we are keen to pass them on to their rightful owners.

All information gratefully received! Our phone number is 503.

Update #1: Julie B has been successfully traced; thanks to Lyn and Jane for the info.

Update #2: The package has also now been claimed; thanks to those who passed the message on.
