Fun Fair starts tonight

Get into the Wakes spirit a day early by coming along to Wesseldine’s Fun Fair on Parwich Green tonight, Friday 27th June.  They plan to get going around when the pub opens, or a bit after (aprox 7pm -ish).

It looks like there are going to be some new attractions this year.

Calling all kneelers!

If you have any spare wool from the kneeler you are working on can you keep it safely because some people are running short of certain colours.  If you have any of the dark blue wool spare (about 8″) can you ring Jean on 529.

This is a two in one meeting. Firstly, it is your chance to share your concerns with Derbyshire Police & work together to resolve any problems. The aim is to try and do this by having Community Forums, one on each Beat. This is a further opportunity to influence how your area is policed.

Secondly there will be a presentation by The Derby and Derbyshire Road Safety Partnership about their role and responsibilities, which includes Safety Camera operations (Speed and Traffic light cameras).

The Tissington Safer Neighbourhood Team is only named like this because Tissington is in the centre of our area, which includes Mappleton, Thorpe, Fenny Bentley, Parwich, Bradbourne, Ballidon, Kniveton, Alsop en le Dale, and Pikehall. For this first Community Forum the venue will be at Tissington Village Hall because of it’s central location.

If you are interested in attending please click here for further details & to download the form which needs to be returned by July 4th.

Links with PC Ian Cooper

We are incredibly fortunate in our community that we have a low level of crime & we want to keep it this way. We are working closely with PC Ian Cooper to ensure that our villages are kept up to date with all appropriate information and have created some static pages where you can access his contact details, past newsletters and other relevant information.  Click on the Useful Info tab at the top of the page and the find you will find the Police section under the directory category.

We are part of the Ringmaster network (see below) and will post any messages that come in to us.

Ringmaster Messages
This is a way in which Derbyshire Police gets information out into the Community, (you can receive this information by phone, fax or email), it will inform us about suspicious incidents, descriptions of vehicles & people & can also be used for non crime incidents, such as a missing person. If you would like to be part of the Ringmaster Message system please click here for the form.

If you are already part of Ringmaster and have not already filled in a form this year, could you do so, so that the Police records are up to date.

Key Individual Networks – (KIN)
This is basically a database of individuals who can be helpful to PC Cooper, but County needs to formalise it slightly, hence a small amount of form filling. PC Cooper already has a range of contacts from Parish Councillors, Publicans, event organisers & just people he can call on for a cup of tea, but he would like more contacts. In our area he is not anticipating having any meetings unless there is a need, but as a member of KIN, we may be asked to occasionally feedback comments to the authority.  If you would like to be a KIN please contact PC Ian Cooper.

County Councillor

Some of you will have seen the article in the Ashbourne Telegraph on Councillor Ray Caswell’s resignation as Town Councillor for Ashbourne, on health grounds. We are pleased that he continues as County Councillor for the Dovedale Ward which includes Eton & Alsop and Parwich, and send him our good wishes. His group leader Councillor Andrew Lewer contacted us today to say that, while Councillor Caswell is unwell, constituents can contact him on any County Council issues.

Councillor Andrew Lewer can be contacted by phone via tel. 01629 580000 ext 6022, or email andrew.lewer@derbyshire.gov.uk

Replica Tympanum arrives

The replica tympanum arrived at Parwich Church today and was fitted to the wall inside the tower.  The original carved stone is deteriorating significantly, but English Heritage felt the risk of moving it was too great.  In order to create a permanent record before the carving disappeared completely this replica was made.

The Fancy Dress Parade

If you haven’t already, there is still time to plan your costume for the Fancy Dress Parade on Saturday.  The Marshal and his deputies are planning to storm Camelot, but hopefully there are other challengers in the wings.

Participants show assemble at the School steps for 6pm; the parade begins at 6-15pm.  The categories are:  Continue Reading »

All the fun of the fair

Preparations for Wakes continue a pace.  Think of those working hard to prepare our fun.

The fair moved onto the Green on Monday & Tuesday, fortunately the ground is a bit more solid this year.

What the papers say

In today’s (25th June 2008) Ashbbourne News Telegraph are the following our readers might find of interest:

P.6 A great page feature on Sunday’s Children’s Show (even though I say it myself).  Seriously with four photos, a big thank you to the paper for including the results in full.  Everyone including the children worked really hard, so it is good to get the recognition.
P.7 The 13th World Toe Wrestling Championship is to take place at the Bentley Brook Inn on Friday (6pm to 9pm).  TV coverage and celebrities!  However make sure you are not too hung over to enjoy Wakes Saturday.
P.9 Councillor Ray Caswell is to step down from Ashbourne Town Council because of ill health.  Many will know Mr Caswell.  We would like to take this opportunity to send Mr Caswell our best wishes, and look forward to his continued excellent representation of our ward (Dovedale Ward) on the County Council.  Continue Reading »

Last Thursday’s Coffee Morning

Coffee provided by Janet and delicious home made cakes made by several people were enthusiastically enjoyed by a gathering of people at the Sycamore on Thursday morning. These occasions are always enjoyable because you often get to chat and make new friends.  It is an opportunity to get to know people that you might only have waved to or smiled at before. The cakes were far too tasty for those of us on a diet – not to mention too many names- and I know of at least one person that was hung over on calorie bombshells!   Amongst all the chatting there was time for people to help with a little bit of ‘market research’ for the Big Lottery Fund Application on the kinds of activities, groups, past-times that they could be interested in.  Some very interesting suggestions were made.  You might see someone wandering about over Wakes Week with a small questionnaire, if they stop you please take pity on them and help to answer a few questions – it is totally anonymous. The results will be available for us all to see.

As always a big thank you to Janet for her generous hospitality and to Marion for organising it.

Thank you to Patti B for sending this blog in.

Flower Festival Helpers wanted

Can you help during the Flower Festival in Parwich Church (Friday 4th to Sunday 6th July)?  The Church will be open from 11am to 6pm (Friday and Saturday) and from 2pm to 5pm on Sunday with refreshments served.

Volunteers are needed for one or two hour slots to act as stewards in the Church or to help with refreshments.

Also we are looking to borrow a number of largish glass carboys or demijohns to put in the church to collect visitors’ donations.  Can you help, or do you have any suitable alternatives?

If the answer to any of the above is yes, please contact Rachel R on tel. 202.

Children’s Show slide show

We have a new slide show on-line with photographs of the 2008 Children’s Horticultural Show.  A further show on Open Gardens will follow soon.  Click here to go to our index of slide shows, or click on the photo link below to go straight to the Children’s Show photos:

Colouring in for Flower Festival

The Flower Festival (4th to 6th July) will also be to launch a display on Parwich’s oldest man-made object.  This is the carved stone over the west door of St Peter’s Church.

Children of all ages are invited to colour in the above sketches of the carvings to help decorate the church over that weekend.  Copies of the animals will be available in the village, or print them yourself by going to a printer friendly pdf version by clicking on the above image or clicking here.

Please leave your coloured in versions in the box in Church by Wednesday 2nd July.  If you have any questions please contact Andrew Robinson.

In the current (July) issue of The Derbyshire Magazine, you’ll find a decidedly glamorous photo feature on the “Beautiful Fund Raiser” evening which took place at The Horns in Ashbourne last month (raising £300 for Project Parwich in the process). Copies of the magazine are available in the Sycamore shop.

Elsewhere in the same issue, you’ll find an illustrated trailer for a feature in next month’s magazine, in which Jo-anne Jewett will be talking about her work as a top make-up artist.

If you have any prizes suitable for the Parwich School PTA Tombola (for both adults and children) at the Wakes Saturday Market (28th June) can you give them to Denise Ball or take them to Parwich Primary School before 3-30pm Thursday 26th June.  (Please, leave them in the School porch with a note indicating they are for the Tombola.)

Guess my name

This fine doll has been made by a Parwich resident to raise money for Memorial Hall.  If you want a chance at winning her you must come along to the Wakes Saturday Market and guess her name.

2008 Children’s Show Results

Thank you to Parwich & District Horticultural Society for sending us the following:

Everyone will agree that this year’s event has been a great success. The weather was a welcome improvement on last year. This year 17 gardens were open. The Horticultural Society appreciates all the hard work involved in preparing your gardens and tidying up afterwards, in addition to the time taken on the day; so a very big thank you to all who opened their gardens. Also well done Dot; the day ran smoothly, as always.  This is one of those great days in the year, like Wakes, when one is so glad to be part of such a marvelous community.  Continue Reading »

Photographing seventeen gardens within the space of two and a half hours was always going to be a tall order. For Kevin S., who was forced to decline numerous offers of liquid refreshment along the way in the name of duty, completing the circuit represented an almost superhuman feat of endurance.

Kevin also found time to snap most (or was it all?) of the entries in this year’s scarecrow competition. Sincere apologies to anyone whose scarecrow remained undiscovered.

Despite the cloudy skies and the heavy winds, the gardens of Parwich looked truly magnificent this afternoon. Many thanks to all who took part, to all who visted, and of course to the Horticultural Society for arranging yet another successful and enjoyable event.

In the gallery which follows, our seventeen show gardens are displayed in numerical order, according to the official map: The School, School View, Stable Cottage, Wheatsheaf Cottage, Pool Croft, Town Head, Parwich Hall, Gardener’s Cottage, Knob Hall, Creamery Cottage, Orchard Farm, 6 Church Walk, Church Cottage, Flaxdale, The Fold, Walnut Cottage and Brook Close Farm.

At least one image from each garden has been chosen; usually there are two, and occasionally there are three. Again, our apologies to those gardens who received somewhat short shrift; time was very limited, and lighting conditions were far from ideal.

Our 2008 gallery starts “below the fold”. As always, clicky-clicky to make it biggy-biggy!

Thank you to Julie B for sending in this blog.

I am interested in organising either a regular Youth Club, Drama Club or a Book Club (reading/poetry) for Project Parwich.

Anybody interested in helping me, or just interested, please ring me on 688.

We would like to express our appreciation to everyone who contributed to a highly successful Open Gardens and Childrens’ Show.

Despite the wind, the gardens were looking beautiful and we would like to thank all those who invited us into their gardens and allowed us enjoy the results of their hard work.

Thank you also to the children who submitted exhibits to the show. Your creations were wonderful!

We would also like to thank you if you were involved behind the scenes – those who organised the event, donated plants, baked scones, served yummy cream teas, did the washing up….plus others who undertook the thousand other unsung jobs! Your efforts allowed us all to have a really good time.

Help appreciated this afternoon

If you can spare a little time this afternoon to help with washing up or serving cream teas it would be greatly appreciated.  Call in at the Memorial Hall anytime from 2pm – 6pm.

Thank you.

When the heavens opened for last year’s Gardens Open Day, the “positive spin” went something like this:

“Well, it’s a good thing in a way; the true enthusiasts won’t care about getting wet, so the gardens will be less crowded and we’ll all get a better view…”

This time around, I’m guessing that we could all put up with the occasional bottle-neck in return for some halfway decent weather!

The good news is that the Met Office are predicting dry conditions for most of Sunday. As it’s always difficult to know which forecast to pick from the Met Office site (are we closer to Bakewell, Buxton or Sudbury?), here are the current snapshots from all three: Continue Reading »

Open Gardens tomorrow

The weather will be better this year! (We hope!)

Open Gardens on Sunday

Are you ready for the Children’s Horticultural Show, is your Scarecrow getting made, is your basket hanging?  Whether your answers are ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ come along on Sunday afternoon, enjoy some beautiful gardens, have a cream tea and a great time.

This post is an interim, mid-month, update to the planning application post listed at the end of May.  The aim of the mid-month posts is to list any new planning applications that have been registered. Unlike the end of month posts, the mid-month posts do not give updates on the progress of all “active” planning applications.

Information has been sourced from the search facility on the Peak District National Park Authority (PDNPA) website.

There are no new planning applications for Alsop-en-le-Dale, Ballidon or Pikehall. There is one new application for Parwich:

A full update posting will be provided at the end of June.
You can also access this information at any time via the Planning section, listed under Categories.

Pigs, Pussies and Post boxes

Sorry Denis for stealing the title of your talk to the History Society.

‘The Devil is in the detail’ as they say.  And here is some detail from the new stained glass window in St. Peter’s.  The Grahams kept cows and pigs, and many will remember that both Mrs Graham and Miss Graham were fond (some might say too fond) of cats.  Can anyone let us know about the birds?
