This seems like an ideal time of the week to alert people to the excellent local fish delivery service, which calls into Parwich every Friday afternoon.
The service is run by R.G. Morris & Son, a family firm which operates from Buxton. Bob and Daniel Morris provide a helpful, informative and cheerful service, and are happy to leave deliveries in out-buildings or with neighbours if their customers are still out at work.
Free range poultry and eggs are also provided, along with seasonal game.
To quote from the firm’s brochure:
We offer the highest quality seafood, ranging from sustainable wild and farmed fish, to organically farmed fish. We also provide a wide variety of shellfish from well-managed and environmentally friendly fisheries, such as rope-grown mussels and hand-dived scallops.
Some fishing methods have now been found to damage the environment and have become an unacceptable way of sourcing fish. As a company, we will endeavour to provide fish and seafood caught through sustainable methods, thus promoting and helping to ensure that our industry continues to grow and improve in a viable way.
Our fish is brought in from the various ports all around the country to our refrigerated depot. From there we distribute it to all our customers on a daily basis, ensuring that it is fresh and of the highest quality each day.
We have been using this service for several years, and have been absolutely delighted with it. (Try the dressed crabs, the Dover sole or the halibut – they’re all gorgeous.)
Contact details: 01298 72458 (8am to 8pm), 07968 734909 (24 hr mobile).

Local news features more this week in the Ashbourne News Telegraph with a stunning photo on the cover of a crashed car (although it perhaps panders to the voyeur in us it is a very good photo, hopefully the driver makes a fully recovery).
Stories that might be of interest to our readers include:
As always let us know if we have missed anything.

This evening, the Annunciation window was installed in St. Peter’s church. Designed by Meg Lawrence of Radnor, Wales, it was fitted by Ian Pocklington of Norfolk. The installation work will be completed on Wednesday morning. The window was donated by Roger Graham, now of Breaston, near Derby, in memory of his grandmother and aunt, both of whom were postmistresses of Parwich. The window shows the Archangel Gabriel – patron saint of postmasters and postmistresses – telling the Blessed Virgin Mary that she will bear God’s Son. The window will be dedicated by the Bishop of Repton at a service on Sunday 6th July at 6 pm, which will be the climax of St. Peter’s Flower Festival.

At last we have got our first slide show of local photographs on-line. Click on the following to go to THE INDEX OF SLIDE SHOWS (only one available so far) or go directly to SLIDE SHOW NO.1 – GENERAL PHOTOS.
As we do more slide shows we will get better at it, but in the mean time let us know your thoughts on how this works. Also let us know if you have any problems displaying it with your browsers.
Please get in touch if you have any sets of photos you think would make a good slide show, or if you are willing to take photos at Open Gardens or during Wakes Week to create specific shows on them.

Yesterday was an open day at Bradbourne Mill. Our apologies for missing this and not giving advanced warning (if you spot something coming up, do let us know at parwich@hotmail.co.uk). Thank you to Alan Gifford for sending in the following up date:
I called at Bradbourne mill the other day, the wheels have turned and the pump system is in place; the hurst frame in basement is enclosed in horrible white galzed panels, to meet Planning requirements; now they are trying to agree what happens on the stone floor.

Although there are a number of stalls planned for the market on the Green on Wakes Saturday (from 11am onwards, Saturday 28th June 2008), there is still room for more. Individuals or local groups interested in running a stall should contact the Carnival and Recreation Committee (phone Barbara L on tel 279).
It is a great opportunity for local groups to promote themselves and to undertake fund raising activities, or for crafts folk to sell their wares, or for whatever you can think of (as long as it is legal and not indecent).

Thank you Mike G for sending us this splendid photo of a Daisy Bush in full bloom. It is very much in keeping with our current garden theme, and should help draw more visitors to Open Gardens next Sunday afternoon. Is it in your garden or do we need to locate it ourselves? Continue Reading »

Admission is £3 (including a cup of tea), at the School, where additional refreshments will be available including lots of homemade cakes, scones & strawberries & cream. Parking is in the field at the far end of Ashes Lane.
The event is organised by the Fenny Bentley Initiative (FBI), and this year the profits will be donated to the Air Ambulance Service.

If people are willing to take photographs of the Children’s Show, scarecrows and gardens on Sunday 22nd, PARWICH.ORG can make a slide show that will be accessed on-line. Send your photos to parwich@hotmail.co.uk or give them to Peter T (tel 287) on CD.
No names, house names or addresses will be included, just photos. Also we will check with the garden owners whether they are happy or not to have their gardens included.
Hopefully we can also do the same for Wakes Week.

The actor, who plays Sam Strachan in the BBC TV drama, and grew up in Parwich, opened the £2.2m centre in the Rykneld Road private hospital, which includes an MRI scanner and a CT scanner.
MRI means magnetic resonance imaging and the machine uses radio waves and magnets to create clear pictures of parts of the body.
The CT scanner takes 64 pictures of a patient’s body, from different angles, allowing detailed images to be built up for quicker diagnosis.
The MRI scanner can be used on up to 15 patients a day, whereas the CT scanner can investigate up 50 people a day.
Thank you to Stuart for sending this article in – as published in the Derby Evening Telegraph.

Thank you to Parwich & District Horticultural Society for supplying the following:
Don’t let the children next weekend upstage the main Parwich Annual Flower & Vegetable Show, which this year is on Sunday 7th September. Now is the time to start thinking about what you might want to enter. Tony and Rita (well done you both) nearly swept the board last year, so everyone else start planning.

Can we learn from what is happening in neighbouring communities?
Youlgrave has made massive steps forward in exploring renewable energy sources through Sustainable Youlgrave:
Sustainable Youlgrave began early in 2006 when a group of likeminded villagers in the Youlgrave area came together to discuss ways in which, by thinking globally but acting locally, we could do our bit to preserve this fragile planet and at the same time make our rural community fully sustainable. We are exploring a range of initiatives which cover specific renewable energy schemes, educational and energy-saving projects, plus related themes such as promoting local shops and services.
As well as various energy saving approaches, they are investigating the possibility of using an old watermill site in Bradford Dale to generate hydro-electricity. Interestingly an application in for a wind turbine at Middleton by Youlgrave was due for consideration at yesterday’s Planning Committee Meeting, Continue Reading »

Parwich Primary School
Dear Parents,
Thank you for your generosity. School has benefited from Parwich Community’s big heart!
Your donations to ‘Bags2School’ were incredible the entrance hall was covered by collection time on Tuesday. The PTA Cake Stall was well attended despite the disappointing weather. Thanks also to two individuals who donated plants and a fax/copier to school – thanks go to Mr Whitfield at Leatherbritches Nursery and Mr Rodgers of Ashover.
Golden Table
(Not available online)
Photographs
Please ensure all photograph money is returned by Monday 23rd June.
Year 6 parents – parents have suggested purchasing the Year 6 photo on disc, please see Mrs Barker if you are interested.
New School Logo Final Reminder
All the entries are displayed in the middle classroom; they’ll be there until Monday 16th June. Everyone is invited to view the logos and choose their favourite with a discreet tally system. The winning design will be announced in assembly on Friday 20th June.
PTA Coffee Morning / Tombola Reminder
A big thank you to everyone who supported the coffee morning, where we raised £76.20.
Can you please send any items suitable for an adult or child tombola into school ready for the PTA stall during Wakes. Please leave items in the school entrance – thank you.
KS2 Spelling Bee Fundraiser / Coffee Morning
On the morning of Thursday 19th June KS2 children will be taking part in a Spelling Bee which parents will be invited to watch and support. Entry into the competition will be £1 per child. If children wish to enter they will need to pay their £1 on Monday 16th June. They will then be separated into spelling ability groups and heats will take place on Tuesday morning. The children who are successful in heats will take part in the final on Thursday. Alongside this competition we will be selling hot drinks, cakes and biscuits. We would appreciate any donations of cakes and biscuits for this event.
KS1 Sponsored Spell
The children in Mrs Black’s class will be doing a Sponsored Spell for the benefit of the school funds on Friday 20 June. The children will be bringing a sponsor form home to be returned on Friday 20 June (spelling test day). Children can be sponsored for each correct word or letter, or by donating a fixed amount.

Hockey Club
In order for children to get the best out of their after school hockey club we have decided to change the finishing time to 4.45pm. This gives us time to return to school from the playing fields. Please contact Miss Chatfield if this causes you any problems.
KS2 Trip to Chatsworth
Don’t forget to return permission slips and your voluntary contributions by Thursday 19 June. This trip has been partly funded by the Parwich Horticultural Society to whom we are extremely grateful.
Future School Visits
Rising costs of fuel mean that coach company prices have risen significantly in recent months which inevitably mean higher priced visits. School does not make a profit on any school visits and actually on our more recent trips we have made a loss, being a small school our budget is not tailored to withstand these types of deficits. In future should ‘voluntary contributions’ not cover the cost of the visit the visit will have to be cancelled.
Best wishes
Caroline Rodgers

The driving ranges of Solihull or the roundabouts of Slough?

Having so far failed dismally to create a challenging observation task, here is one last go. All the photos below have been taken in the lanes of Parwich in the last three days. In which gardens or in front of which houses are these wonderful flowers (or vegetables) growing. Putting my money where my keyboard is, I will donate £25 to Project Parwich if anyone manages to get all 25 correct. Further if anyone submits a post with all correct by 6pm on Sunday 15th June 2008, I will double this, and give a box of chocolates to the winner. (If a number of people get them all correct by 6pm on Sunday, the winner will be drawn out of a hat or nearest equivalent.)

AND NOW FOR SOMETHING REALLY DIFFERENT THIS WEEKEND
The ancient Peak District village of Winster, near Bakewell, will be transported back in time one hundred years on Friday June 13, with the Look Sharp! re-enactment of the historic visit by pioneering folksong collector, Cecil Sharp. The event is supported by a grant of £18,700 from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). Continue Reading »

Have you got a small wheelbarrow, with the main body being about 2 feet long (excluding the handles). If it looks old, rusty, a bit broken, wood or metal that would be perfect. We need to borrow one for one of the displays at the flower festival, can you help us out?
Please ring Glynis on 561.

Thank you to Richard Tresidder for forwarding this information. Fanshawe Gate Hall has one of the most charming private gardens in Derbyshire, and the Ramsdens have worked very hard to make it accessible to as many people as possible, at the same time raising substantial funds for charity. If you have not visited these gardens you certainly should (though not on Sunday 22nd of June, as that day is Parwich’s Open Gardens).
