The Derbyshire County Council election results are now in for the two local divisions, with Simon Spencer retaining his seat and Irene Ratcliffe regaining her’s after a four-year gap:

Dovedale Division: including Parwich, Alsop & most of Pikehall

Dovedale

Wirksworth Division: including Ballidon and the rest of Pikehall

Wirksworth

The Conservatives have lost control of the County Council, with Labour achieving a substantial overall majority (taking 43 of the 64 seats). The average turnout rate for the County as a whole was 34.9%.

(Added 4th May: Overall for the County the political split in voting was Labour 43%, Conservatives 29%, UKIP 18.5%, Liberal Democrat 7.5% and Others 2%. Interestingly the BNP vote of nearly 11,000 in 2009 has evaporated, but the UKIP vote of under 2,000 in 2009 has risen to 3 votes shy of  38,000. The Liberal Democrats won three seats, but UKIP won none; does this mean that they also will be arguing for PR? What might this mean for next year’s elections to the European Parliament where there is PR?)

Clive Russell writes:

With some sadness, I received the news from a friend that Mrs. Anne Cooper, the wife of the Rev Jack Cooper, passed away yesterday (Sunday April 21st) after a long battle with cancer. She would be known and remembered by many older village residents as the former Mrs Annie Lyon of Knob Hall, who taught at Belper, Fenny Bentley and other local schools. She also served as Clerk to the Parish Council and was generally prominent in village life before moving to the North East following Jack’s retirement.

The County Council’s final plan for which lights in Parwich are to be part night can be downloaded as a pdf by clicking on the image below:

street light plan

Their time scale and plans for review are:

The implementation of part night lighting for Parwich is planned to take place in May 2013 and we will review accident and crime statistics in approximately twelve months time.

Note: Our poll results disagreed with the County Council’s initial proposals for 16 of the 33 street lights in Parwich. As a result of these poll results the County Council altered their plans for 9 of those 16 lights.

Street Light update

The results of the polls here at parwich.org produced a clear pattern of recommendations on part night street lighting: supporting the general principle of some lights being on all night along the prime access route of Shaw Lane and Main Street (including Nether Green and Sycamore and Chestnut Cottages), but the rest of the village being part night (including the Kiln Lane lights, proposed by the Council to be permanently switched off).

The County Council have responded positively to these poll results in general with three exceptions:

  1. That the light (065359) at the end of Croft Avenue be all night, because it covers a turning area at the end of a cul-de-sac
  2. That the three Smithy Close lights remain on all night, because it houses “vulnerable people
  3. That the three Creamery Lane lights remain on all night as Parwich Parish Council recommends this (see their comment below)

They did however offered us chance to comment further. (more…)

Thanks to Jane B for these three photos, which were taken on Easter Sunday.

1. Junction of Dale Road and A515 – pretty difficult to see traffic coming from the Buxton direction.

2. Walking with Buntingo and Lotti – it may not look it, but it is 6 feet down to the track from where they are standing – it’ll be a few weeks before the snow has melted sufficiently to allow cycling.

Some intriguing tracks have recently been found in the snow at the top of Parwich Hill. They were clearly made by some type of bird, but what could have made them? The tracks suggest a waddling gait, but all of our resident ornithologists were stumped. We therefore sent the photographs to Twycross Zoo, to see if they could help.

The response was instant, and very perplexing. “We recognised them immediately,” said a spokesman from the zoo, “as the marks are identical to those made by our Humboldt Penguins.”

“We have no idea how the penguin got to Parwich. It is certainly not one of ours, as we have counted them and they are all present and correct. As Humboldt penguins are known for burrowing, it is likely that yours has been living on the hill for a while, only making itself known after the recent heavy snowfall.”

“The Humboldt Penguin is a South American penguin, which breeds in coastal Peru and Chile. Its nearest relatives are the African Penguin, the Magellanic Penguin and the Galápagos Penguin. Have any of your residents visited any of these locations recently and perhaps smuggled one back?”

“They are certainly very resourceful birds. Last year, a Humboldt penguin escaped from Tokyo Sea Life Park by scaling the 13 feet high wall and through the fence into Tokyo bay. It then thrived in Tokyo Bay for 82 days before being recaptured.”

Whether our penguin has escaped or been stolen, we will never know. Climate change has been dramatic lately, but perhaps never this dramatic.

The Blog Team would like to extend its congratulations to our resident satirist Paul Burlinson, who has been invited to appear as a panellist on the next season of BBC1’s Have I Got News For You.

No stranger to the glamour of the television studio – his appearances on Channel 4’s Countdown in 2002 and 2004 have already gone down in broadcasting history – Paul was talent-spotted by HIGNY‘s executive producer, Ria Pollof.

“While taking a mini-break in your beautiful village earlier this year, I stumbled across Weedkiller Weekly, Paul’s wonderfully wry ‘sideways glance’ at events in the news”, says Ria, talking exclusively to PARWICH.ORG.

“We have been looking at ways to bring fresh new talent onto the show, and Paul’s cheeky sense of mischief was just the sort of thing we have been looking for. In this time of stringent budget cuts, we can no longer afford to pay the fees of many of our regular panellists, and as Paul asked for nothing more than a case of Marston’s Pedigree, a catering pack of pickled onions and a signed photograph of Dame Vera Lynn, we were only too happy to welcome him aboard!”

“Some of our production team were a little concerned about Paul’s somewhat provocative sense of humour”, Ria added, “but a top team of legal specialists will be on hand during the recording of the show, ready to intervene if his remarks get a little too close to the bone. We’ve had similar issues with Russell Brand, so forewarned is forearmed!”

Rumours that Paul is scheduled to appear on the same show as his great personal hero, Lord Prescott, could be neither confirmed nor denied as PARWICH.ORG went to press.

The final results for our Street Light polls have now been counted. It may be possible to still vote for several days, but these votes will not be included in the information sent to Derbyshire County Council (DCC).

You can still comment on
the County Council’s own website until Tuesday (2nd April 2013)

Our full poll results and workings out can be down loaded as a pdf by clicking here, and will be forwarded to the County Council. However here is a summary:

PARWICH.ORG readers supported the general principle of ‘part night lighting with decisions being made on a light by light basis’. The poll results agreed with DCC’s proposals for 16 lights, did not reach any consensus for one light, and disagreed with the proposals for 16 lights.

There is a clear recommendation that more lights be part night than the County Council proposes,  (more…)

An Ode To The Gritter

Gritter, oh gritter, how we long for you!
The snow is a beautiful icy-blue
The drifts are impressive, the surfing sublime
Even though Parwich is nowhere near a coastline
But we need to get out and back to work
Mind you, a day off is a really welcome perk
The wind howls, the fire’s stoked up
The Horlicks (aarghh) comes out for a hot, steaming cup
A few memorable days when Nature rules our lives
Until the exhausted gritter arrives ….
Some roads are now open (not yet the A515)
And it’s all back to normal, to the treadmill of life
No more scraping of shovels, no more gaiters and boots
No more shop shelves empty of foods
Let’s be honest, we’ll miss the snow
Thank you gritter, see you in 10 months or so.

Ongoing Road Conditions

Now, on Monday evening, the road from Parwich to the B5056 is passable with care, and the B5056 south to Ashbourne is also clear. We understand it is possible to get to the A515 through Alsop en le Dale, however we have not had any current reports of conditions on the A515 (Buxton Weather report there are still closures on the A515).

With the temperature again well below freezing and the possibility of more drifting, please keep on adding comments on road conditions, especially first thing Tuesday morning.

Tuesday 6-30am Road out of Parwich to Red House all OK to travel, narrow in places with a little ice; to allow passing look for vehicles ahead and oncoming. DS

Because of the bad road conditions, Mum had to be taken to Hospital by air ambulance yesterday, as it was impossible to get an ambulance into the village.

I would just like to thank everyone out of the village who helped to get her to the air ambulance which landed in Bells yard. Now it is impossible to get into see her.

I must also say a big thank you to the paramedics who came to her – they were brilliant – and also to the doctor that came out. It had taken him three hours to get here from Belper.

Yesterday’s rescue service was provided by the Derbyshire, Leicester and Rutland Air Ambulance charity (DLRAA). If you would like to make a donation towards the vital work which they do, please visit their website. And if you would like to get involved within the village, Parwich First Responders are still short-staffed and desperately looking for new volunteers. Please ring Sue on 390334 or Patti on 390206.

Here are some photos showing the valiant efforts being made to keep a road out of Parwich clear. Note that even with the snow plough going through, the road out of the village to the B5056 is only passable with great care and good clearance in a 4×4. There have now been several people in 2 wheel drive cars who needed to be towed out.

There continues to be strong support for some form of reduction in street lighting (86%), with the largest group in favour of making a decision on a light by light basisSo far the individual street light polls in general suggest some lights remain on all night in Main Street (including Chestnut and Sycamore Cottages) and Shaw Lane, through routes, including some that the County Council propose part night, but there is a split vote in relation to Smithy Lane, also a through route. In contrast for the rest of the village the polls support all lights being part night, more than proposed by the County Council, with the exception of Kiln Lane where there is support for the Council’s proposal to turn some lights off completely.

Parwich Parish Council have set up a sub-committee to forward their views, and will be taking these poll results into account on Wednesday. The County Council’s community engagement runs to the 2nd of April, so you can still contact them directly. The polls here at PARWICH.ORG will continue open until next Sunday (31st March), so those who have not done so already can still vote:

Here are some interim results from the polls at PARWICH.ORG on the County Councils proposals for part night street lighting in Parwich village, which are being discussed at tonight’s Parish Council meeting.

Although there is a wide range of genuinely held opinions, so far there seems to be strong support for some reduction in street lighting (86%) with the largest group in favour of making a decision on a light by light basis.

  • Decide on a light by light basis – 53%
  • Turn all lights off for part of the night – 23%
  • Turn street lights off altogether – 10%
  • Keep all lights on all night – 14%

Looking at the individual polls (see Draft Interim Report for the workings out), PARWICH.ORG readers so far disagree with the proposals for 14 lights, have not reached a consensus for 4 lights, and agree with the proposals for 15 lights. (more…)

Janis Castledine

Janis Castledine (1952-2013)

Thank you to Mike & Gill for the following:

Janis Castledine, late of Newton Grange and Parwich , died aged 61 on March 7th at the Royal Derby Hospital after a long and valiant battle with a brain tumour. She will be sorely missed by her family and all those who knew her. Jan lived in Parwich only a short while, living in one of the cottages on Creamery Lane where she planned and created a fantastic cottage garden from a sad looking back lawn. Janis was also involved in other village activities and was a committee member of the history society in its early days. After she left Parwich she continued to be a regular visitor to Flaxdale House for weekly painting sessions with Gill Radcliffe and she never left without a walk around the garden to see what was in flower and to appreciate Mike’s latest gardening activities. In fact she was an inspiration to Mike and Gill when they first came to Parwich and planned their gardening improvements, and many of the plantings were with Jan’s advice.

Her funeral is to take place on Thursday 21st March at 10am at St Peter’s Church, Chesterfield Road, Belper with the committal at Markeaton at 11am.

So far there seems to be strong support for some reduction in street lighting (89%), with the largest group in favour of making a decision on a light by light basis. Up to this morning, Friday 15th March, 36 people have responded to our general poll:

  • Decide on a light by light basis – 50%
  • Turn all lights off for part of the night – 28%
  • Turn street lights off altogether – 11%
  • Keep all lights on all night – 11%

In relation to the polls for individual lights, so far, things are less clear cut: some indicate agreement with the County Counci’s specific suggestion, others indicate disagreement with the proposals, though for many there is a split vote giving no clear consensus. (more…)

Local CAMRA pubs of the Year

The Ashbourne sub-branch of the Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) have announced their local pubs of the Year with our Sycamore Inn coming first in the rural pub of the year category, and with Smith’s Tavern winning the Ashbourne town pub of the year.

The Ashbourne News Telegraph quote Mark Grist, sub-branch chairman as saying:

Janet Gosling at The Sycamore runs a superb village pub right at the heart of the community, with the village shop inside, as well as finding the time to serve an excellently well-kept range of Robinson’s ales.

The Derbyshire Public transport unit have advised that there is a tendering process for the bus service in April. They said there is NO intention to take away a bus service from Parwich.

They are legally obliged to provide a service for children to school. They cannot provide details until after April of exact timetables. There may be changes to the services as a result of the re-tendering process and there will be notification in advance of any possible changes being implemented.

The Parish Council will be notified of any changes and will post these on the blog.

1. No replacement trees at Nethergreen
2. Trees just on one side at Nethergreen
3. Avenue of trees on both sides of the road at the Nethergreen area

Ray Williams was Headteacher of Parwich Primary School from 1985 to 2007. During these 22 years, Ray’s inspirational teaching and wise leadership of the school profoundly touched the lives of so many people. It was very fitting that a celebration service was held yesterday at the school. Former pupils, teaching staff, governors and others who knew Ray gathered to celebrate the life and achievements of a very special man.

School photographs had been set out, showing the many pupils from Ray’s time at the school. People spent time spotting people they knew and reflecting on the large number of former pupils who had benefited from Ray’s teaching.

20130202_141350_768x1024

Current headteacher Caroline Rodgers welcomed everyone and provided some opening words. She then invited everyone to gather in The Celebration Garden where an oak tree was to be dedicated to Ray. Dennis Lacock talked about the significance of the tree and likened the planting of acorns to sowing knowledge and wisdom in the minds of children.

20130202_141055_1024x768

Ray’s wife and brother laid earth round the base of the tree and the oak was dedicated to Ray.

Back in the school, Margaret, Haley and Jenny made a warm tribute to Ray, talking about their experiences working with him in school.

20130202_143823_1024x768

A tribute was also made by former pupil Chloe.

20130202_144030_1024x768

Ray’s wife Margaret thanked everyone for coming and said it meant a great deal to her and the family. She mentioned that in April, Ray’s son Gareth will be cycling 1,600km from Adelaide to Canberra over 10 days in Ray’s memory. The funds raised will go directly into research and support projects aimed at finding a cure for cancer. You can find out more about this great cause and read Gareth’s blog during his ride by clicking here.

20130202_141556_1024x768

In her opening words, Caroline highlighted just how giving Ray was as a person. On this sunny afternoon, we had an opportunity to reflect on this and to give thanks for having met such a wonderful person.

The Big Thaw

The rate at which the snow has been disappearing is quite remarkable. Impassable roads yesterday morning are now perfectly driveable. This does mean the melting ice, coupled with the overnight rain, have left quite a bit of water to drain away. This picture shows the icy puddle just down by the Ballidon turning:

This however has to be seen to be believed. Tissington Ford reached 3 feet and caused the sign showing the depth to swivel round. No problem for Andy’s Defender however. Watch and wonder at this piece of video:

Last of the snow?

A fair dollop of snow landed on Parwich last night, adding to the unmelted layer already on the ground. The morning saw many residents reaching for their shovels.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

At the time of writing (5.30pm on Saturday) the Parwich weatherlink (kindly made available by Graham & Amanda) says the temperature is 1 degree celsius. We are expecting a bit of a thaw mixed in with rain over the next few days. The village’s fondant icing appearance is likely to change.

Have we seen the last of the snow? Probably not. There is still plenty of time for more of the fluffy stuff. In the meantime, enjoy the warmer temperature!

Cheryl W reports:

Just to let you know that the road to Ashbourne are not good – even the A515 from the Bentley Brook (as at 8am)

Graham J reports (10:51):

Got to Harpur Hill (Buxton) this morning via Fenny Bentley in 4WD.

The A515 north is fine – well ploughed and gritted, but side roads are not that good in Buxton.

We have also received this update (at 8.20am) from Derbyshire Dales District Council:

It’s a pretty bleak picture in the Derbyshire Dales first thing Monday.

Some good news is that enough staff have somehow managed to get into our four leisure centres in Ashbourne, Bakewell, Matlock and Wirksworth, so all are open for business, but please be aware that parking could well be a problem. Staff at Arc Leisure Matlock have managed to clear the driveway up to the lower pedestrian entrance, but the main car parks are not accessible.

Our weekly Bakewell stallmarket has been cancelled but the Monday livestock market at our Agricultural Business Centre in Bakewell is apparently going ahead as planned.

So far as waste & recycling collections go, there’s no chance of our crews getting out onto the roads today. A supervisor has been out on today’s routes and it simply isn’t safe to do the collections, so we’ll be playing catch-up for the rest of this week. Our advice to residents is please leave your bins out and we’ll get to you just as soon as we can.

We’ll be posting regular updates on Facebook and Twitter.

For conditions in and around Buxton, the reports at http://www.buxtonweather.co.uk/ are always helpful.

If you have any more information on road conditions and snow-related closures today, please let us know.

Watch Out For The Puddles!

You might have noticed that there has been a raindrop or two in our area over the last 24 hours. There are some pretty big pools of water on the roads so we advise taking extra care.
