Last Thursday (29 April) we travelled to Bradwell for the season’s first away match. On their “interesting” green which twists and turns and rises and falls every which way – and with the North wind howling down the Hope Valley – the Parwich Team battled bravely to a 120-109 defeat; a scoreline that in practice did little to flatter our efforts. The home side were a hospitable lot though, and welcoming mugs of hot, steaming tea were gratefully received to warm the hands after or respective contributions. Such a beautiful setting, I for one will look forward to our return there in the Tuesday League fixture later this summer. (Bet it’s even better on a balmy evening.)
However, if Bradwell was cold, this week’s home clash against Matlock Park began with hailstones the size of golf balls battering the two teams as they took the field – any repeat of this could result in Parson’s Croft being renamed The Winter Gardens! Soon after starting though the sun shone on the righteous and, in a match that was nip and tuck from start to finish, it took a recount to confirm that Parwich were to emerge as narrow 126-120 victors. Both entire teams should take a bow for an exciting afternoon throughout.
Great to see a couple of new faces at the practice session last Sunday afternoon and hope that this may continue this week. The next 7 days sees us take on Youlgreave on Tuesday evening and then on the road again to Baslow on Thursday; I’m sure we’ll all do our best to make the you the reader proud at the next report.

Brent Crude remains steady at $68 a barrel on bullish demand outlooks, thanks to the reopening in the United States and Europe and a large draw in U.S. Crude oil inventories.

Plants will again be for sale outside Rookery House next week onwards.
Sales will be in aid of Parwich and District Horticultural Society to help replenish funds.
Open Gardens would normally be our main fund raiser and this is the second year that we are unable to hold this event. Aswell as subsidising trips and speakers for members, PDHS is usually able to make generous donations to other village groups. By purchasing or donating plants to sell you can help us continue to do this.
Look out for vegetable and flower seedlings alongside unusual perennials. Hand sanitiser will be available next to a collection jar.

Church tomorrow
There is one service and it’s in church, St Peter’s, at 9.30am. It’s a service of Holy Communion which we will celebrate with social distancing. Please bring a face mask unless you’re exempt.
Tomorrow is Rogation Sunday when traditionally church congregations walked around the parish boundaries, even in the rain! It’s a time of prayer for the crops and preparation for the Ascension when Jesus ascended to heaven.

It is with great regret that we will have to cancel Open Gardens this year. Covid restrictions have created too many complications for our small committee to overcome alongside a smaller number of gardens able to open. This means that there will be no donations available for village groups again this year.
However, we are hoping to hold a casual evening event in July where we can open gardens for folks from the village.
Definite plans (Boris permitting!) include the Produce Show on September 12th, a talk in October and the Bob Matthews Quiz on November 20th in the Legion. Looking forward to seeing you all then.
Next year is the 70th anniversary of the Society and with your help we hope to have a bumper year!

Oil prices rally towards $68 as the outlook on demand improves, and the market expects a major revitalisation for global oil demand from this summer onwards. Goldman Sachs, who have been particularly bullish on oil, have stuck to their forecast that Brent Crude could hit $80 later this year.

TIP: Time to check your tank? With a cold bank holiday weekend ahead, have you checked your tank level recently? It is a good idea to make a visual inspection, just to confirm your meter is working correctly – we have had quite a few members reach out recently to say their gauge was incorrect and they were much lower than expected, a quick inspection will rule out any risk. At the same time you can check the condition of your tank for any problems, such sags or cracks.

Amongst the items posted on here for sale on behalf of Geoff and Jack Allsopp is this chest. The lid of the chest is inscribed “Sampson Allsopp 1883” . Sampson was the grandfather of Geoff and Jack. Born in Newton Grange, Sampson married Jeanetta Katherine Brownlee in 1885 in Alsop, presumably taking this chest with him to start his married life. Sampson and Jeanetta had 7 children including Francis Victor who was the father of Geoff, Jack and their 5 brothers and 2 sisters. Sampson died in 1929 and Jeanetta in 1938. They are buried here in Parwich.
It would be good to think that there may be someone out there, related to the Allsopps who might be interested in acquiring this piece of family history.

- 6pm on Zoom: A service of Evening Prayer using modern words (from Common Worship). There will be opportunity to sing loudly in your own homes without anyone hearing you.

The start of the new season of Thursday and Tuesday league matches has brought varying results for Parwich. The curtain-raiser at home to Wirksworth, played on a warm and sunny afternoon, certainly brought a valliant effort, but despite winning more games we were narrowly pipped to a loss by a mere 3 points, the final score being 127-130. A close encounter throughout indeed.
However Tuesday Captain Dawn Alsopp rallied her troops for Tuesday evening and her intrepid men and ladies replied with an impressive 80 to 47 win over Bradwell. Under the swirling dark clouds that threatened much but in the end delivered only a sprinkle the Team rose to the occasion. Only the plummeting evening temperature had a say and the evening finished with Sue Ash doing an impression of Ernest Shackleton as he set out to conquer the Antarctic.
It’s all great fun, and the Team will welcome new members, so why not turn up to one of the Sunday open sessions and have a go – all equipment can be provided. It is fervently hoped that in the coming months we will be able to acknowledge our opponents with the customary warm handshakes and the offer of a pint at the conclusion of hostilities.

TIP: Remove water built up in your tank – Sunny weather can warm your tank and cause condensation to form. To prevent this causing issues we recommend using a water scavenger which will absorb contaminated water in the tank. It is simple to use, just fix the cord to the tank and drop in the scavenger. Or if you would like to test for water you can purchase a Water Test Kit. For more information please visit The Club Store.
Also, as spring has arrived and nature is now well and truly blossoming, it is a good idea to check your tank visibility to check that no greenery is starting to grow over or around your tank. If it is, please ensure you cut back any greenery that may obscure your tank so the drivers can complete a full inspection and a successful delivery.

Wakes this year starts on Saturday 26th June and some of you may be wondering why we have been a bit quiet about it! The problem we have is that it is so close to the government roadmap date of the 21st June it really is hard for us to know what to do for the best!
The Carnival and Recreation Committee have met this week and have decided that we won’t be holding the Carnival as usual but we will be doing the fancy dress competition from your home, with the judges driving around to see you all. We are also hoping to include a float category so they can follow the pick up playing the band music. We will be doing the Treasure Hunt on the Sunday, with both an adult and junior category and the Hill Race will be similar to last year with a few more categories. The rest really does depend on the next two government announcements. I know the Odd Fellows are meeting and are hoping to carry on as best they can – dependent on the next announcement on the 17th May so hopefully we will be able to put the full programme together after that date. We will also be working with the Legion and the Sycamore to provide as best a Wakes as we can whilst staying safely within the regulations.
We are always more than happy to take any suggestions on what we can do – just Facebook Messenger or email lucywigley@googlemail.com and hopefully we will be able to give you some more concrete news in a month.
In the meantime start planning your fancy dress and running up Parwich Hill to improve your times!

Food caddy liners being delivered in April and May
23 April 2021Derbyshire Dales households have started to receive their annual free roll of 52 caddy liners – and deliveries will continue for the rest of April and throughout May.
Please don’t contact us until the end of May to report that you haven’t yet received your free roll.
If you’re running out of the food bags we supply you can use any biodegradable bag that conforms to BS:EN13432 standard, displaying the “compostable” logo below.

Church on Sunday
There are two opportunities for worship in Parwich provided by our village churches:
- 11am in the church: A shorter all age service – suitable for everyone – thinking about God as our protector and St George as today (Friday) is St George’s Day. Please bring a mask unless you are exempt. Any hymn singing will occur outside the church. Social distancing will be observed and there won’t be any refreshments encouraging socialising.
- 6pm on Zoom: A traditional service of Evening Prayer from the 1662 Book of Common Prayer. There will be opportunity to sing loudly in your own homes without anyone hearing you.

Church meets tomorrow
Tomorrow on Zoom we’re celebrating the 70th anniversary of the formation of the Peak National Park that we all enjoy. We’ll be using contemporary words from the Northumbria Community and (hopefully) singing hymns in our homes while muted so not broadcasting to everyone else!
The congregation will be gathering between 1730 and 1800:
