Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club
This week we played 2 away matches, on Tuesday at Whitworth Park and Thursday at Chatsworth.
Tuesday evening, at least for our first two pairs proved to be warm and sunny and the bowls managed to live up to the weather, both games being keenly contested. We finished with a 2 point advantage when scores were totalled, 39-37. Our second two pairs were somewhat hampered by cooler temperatures and failing light (it was the same for the opposition!) but, nevertheless, their matches ended with equal points, 28 each. Some said that they needn’t have bothered playing! But every point counts. We ended up winners by the small margin of 67-65.
Thursday afternoon saw the club playing at Chatsworth, unfortunately, with only 9 players when the ideal number is 12. Chatsworth had won the league last year and, with us, had been promoted to Divsion 1; we were expecting a hard match.
True to past seasons we lost the doubles 47-57 but knew we had the chance to make up the deficit in the 6 singles games. Keith, Tony, Edith and Dawn all played well, the eventual result being 69-52 to Parwich meaning an overall winning score of 116-109.
A good week all round for Parwich.
Readers of this blog may have noticed that Ian J is not playing this season. Currently, he is seriously ill in hospital. Our best wishes go to both him and Iris.

Update for Bradbourne & Parwich Heating Oil Club
Brent oil prices ease slightly to $71.50 today as U.S. inventories increased by more than anticipated, offering evidence that the oil market is not as tight as expected. As a result we have only seen a small fall in kerosene rates this week.
TIP :Have you checked your tank level recently? It is a good idea to make a visual inspection just to confirm your gauge is working correctly. At the same time you can check the condition of tank for any sags and cracks.

Congratulations to Sir Richard, who has been re-elected as our Councillor here in the Dovedale and Parwich ward of Derbyshire Dales District Council
The results were
- Sandra Fearn (Liberal Democrats) 78 votes
- Sir Richard FitzHerbert (Conservative) 424 votes
- Sue Hodgson (Labour) 73 votes
The turn out was low, just under 44%. The Conservatives look set to retain control of the Council, though with a much reduced majority. See the District Council website for the full results.

The six Polling Stations for our ward are listed here, for residents of Parwich we vote in the Memorial Hall, but Alsop vote in Tissington, with voting between 7am to 10pm on Thursday 2nd May.
Historically turnout is low for local elections, but as a Parwich resident said “If you don’t vote you’ve no right to moan“.

There are district and parish council elections this Thursday, 2nd of May:
Parwich Parish Council – There are six candidates for seven elected positions (see the Parish Council website), so these six candidates will automatically take office without the need for a vote. Click here to see who they are. Congratulations to all six.
Derbyshire Dales District Council – Here in the Dovedale & Parwich ward we have three candidates:

Derbyshire County Council have asked the Parish Council to publicise the availability of these grants. There are 2,000 grants of up to £500 and a smaller number of larger grants.
More details available here.
Somewhere in Derbyshire has to get this money – some of it could be for Parwich!

Although the Day has been postponed to tomorrow Sunday 28 April, preparations were underway on Friday. Two areas have been marked out for the geophys team, one in Chris and Ruth’s orchard and one in the field at Nethergreen Farm. The geophys scanner cannot work in wet conditions so fingers crossed for a dry day tomorrow.
Friday also saw the removal of turf and loose stones from what will become the large excavation trench. With only an inch or so of top soil removed interesting stones were starting to be revealed which indicate an earlier construction. The trench is now ready for a full excavation.
Everyone is welcome to come along and have a go at the geophys survey and excavating the trench. There will be a few archaeological activities for children. Please bring along any interesting finds you may have from the village and also your knowledge about local water sources. We are hoping to start a major project on the importance of water to the village, this Archaeology Day is our first step towards this project.

The Annual Meeting of the Parish Council and the Parish Annual Meeting will be held in the Memorial Hall at 7.00pm and 8:30pm respectively on MONDAYthe 13th of May.
There will not be a Parish Council meeting on the third Wednesday of May – the 15th – as previously advertised.
The Parish Council is required to hold a Parish Annual Meeting each year. This meeting is not a formal Parish Council meeting and has no set format.
As in recent years the Parish Council will take the opportunity to provide summaries of activities and finances during the past year.
Village organisations are also welcome to talk about their own past and planned activities if they wish.
If you represent a village organisation and would like to do this, or have any other suggestions for the meeting, please contact the Clerk.

Brent oil prices hit fresh highs for 2019, passing $74.50 a barrel in response to tougher US sanctions against Iran, before falling back to $72 today. With the May Day bank holiday coming up, please ensure you have ordered early and allow plenty of time for your delivery.
TIP : Upgrade your fuel to premium fuel with an Exocet additive. Exocet additives lower carbon emissions, stabilise fuel, inhibit sludge formation in the tank, and improve overall fuel performance. Additives can be purchased from the club shop. If you have an AGA, then please ensure you order the Cooker additive.

Bring along any interesting finds that have appeared in your gardens or elsewhere and find out what they are. We have our very own finds expert Ian Pitts on hand to identify what you bring along.
The bits of pottery or metal work we find in our gardens can tell us a surprising amount. In my garden bits of late nineteenth or early twentieth century pottery at the bottom of the well tell us when it was likely to have gone out of use and been filled in, and two bits of pottery, one above and one below, suggest a yard surface, two feet or so below the current garden, was in use around the 1500s. (An advantage of having Ian doing your walling is the additional finds identification.)

The piece on the right is Medieval perhaps indicating a Medieval house was nearby
Also we have a display of some of the late Brian Foden’s finds in and around Parwich from his many years of field walking. This includes some very fine Neolithic flints and arrowheads.
Note, this event has been delayed a day, because of the imminent arrival of Storm Hannah. Come for all or part of the day, 10am to 4pm Sunday 28th April, Nethergreen Farm.

Tuesday 23rd April – Home to Youlgreave B
This was a great match for us. All four pairs won and we ended up 84 points to 54. Wendy made her debut in the Tuesday league and got a win with Dawn. Fran and Dot and Rick and Edith also had good wins and our star players were Keith and Harry with a 21-5 score. Youlgreave will no doubt have their revenge in the return match in July when we will be playing on their ‘interesting’ green.
Thursday 25th April – Home to Whitworth B
It was a different story today, but we did our best between sunshine and heavy showers. The combination of being in a higher league and hampered by a smaller pool of players didn’t help, but enough excuses – we lost! 102 points to 125. We had 2 winning games in the 3 doubles games and 3 wins in the 6 singles games, however the scores in the losing games weren’t enough to bring our overall score much higher.
We enjoy the competitiveness and rivalry of the league matches whether we win or lose, but bowling isn’t only about that. Playing fun and friendly games with friends and family in the beautiful Easter sunshine was a delight at the weekend and it would be sad if this amenity was lost to the village.
