We have the following message from the Legion:
Thanks to generous donations and fundraising activity, we are now able to spruce things up inside the Legion and have the new carpet fitted.
The Club bar will be open as usual while this is being done.
Any volunteers handy with a paint brush or a screwdriver will be very welcome – just come along between 10am and 5pm, Tuesday to Thursday this week.

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB
Only a few matches left this season. The Tuesday League matches now have to be started earlier because of the shorter days. Probably just as well as you can’t have old peeps wandering around in the dark with a set of woods in their hand.
Tuesday League.
Away – August 21 – Wirksworth.
This was the match that was cancelled because of the weather. Perhaps it should have been cancelled permanently. We had two good wins and two not so good losses. Dot and John B got to grips with the big green and won 21 – 15. Edith, playing this week with Sue A, Rick having tootled off to somewhere else, won 21 – 18. The remainder of the games we managed to lose quite well which gave a final score of Wirksworth 75, Parwich 58.
Away – August 22 – Matlock Bath.
We certainly did well on the old 50p green this week. Leading the way was Dot and John B who inspired everyone with their unbelievable skill in winning 21 – 4. Well John B needs bulling up as he has played rubbish for weeks. No need for any encouragement for Edith who fortunately had found Rick reasonably close at hand, they won 21- 14. Tony and Dawn nearly grasped defeat from the jaws of victory, but held on to sneak home 21 – 19. Although our fourth pair lost they battled to the end coming in 21 – 15 down. The final score Matlock Bath 58, Parwich 78. A cracking result on that green.
Next Match – Home – 29 August – Ashwood Park – 5.30pm.
Thursday League
Home – Matlock Park – 24 August.
This team are riding high in the league in second place and the match could be carnage, but no, your gallant band of intrepid, if not ancient bowlers rose to the cause! Well they had a go. Although we lost the three doubles, which as you devotees of this editorial will know, is not unusual, we were only 24 points behind. Which for us is tantamount to getting close!
Could the singles players get us back? You just had to be there. We won four out of the six games, but after 5 games the scores were tied at 107 each. You could have cut the air with a jellymould. Dawn was our final player and you could not have asked for a better. She soon went into a commanding lead, but her opponent came back and soon it was 14 each. Winner of the next end would win the match. What tension, it was greater than England in a penalty shoot-out with Germany, and the result was better, Dawn won the last end. Parwich 122, Matlock Park 121. Although it is inevitable we will be relegated at least we are going down fighting.
Next match – Away – Tideswell – 31 August – 1.45pm
MONDAY NIGHT IS BOWLS NIGHT
6.30pm – 7.30pm.
No Monday night this week as its a bank holiday and I’m sure you will be doing more exciting things.

THIS IS A MESSAGE FROM THE RURAL CRIME TEAM
We are appealing to the public for information regarding 2 separate arsons that the police are investigating
The first is a barn fire that occurred approximately 2300 hours on Sunday 6th August 2017. The location for the fire is a farm property situated off of FRIDEN ROAD in MIDDLETON-BY-YOULGRAVE. The crime reference number is: 17000336296.
Extensive damage was caused to the barn. A number of silage bails were also slashed with a sharp implement. A car at the property was subject to extensive criminal damage. It would appear a sharp implement was used to cause the damage to the paintwork of the vehicle.
The CEX festival was taking place nearby at the time of the fire and a witness has mentioned sighting either a red or white colored Ford Fiesta, possibly a year 2000 model, parked near the property, with the engine running and two occupants inside at the time of the fire.
We are particularly keen to speak with anyone that could hold any information with regards to the sighting of the vehicle or if they are aware of any other suspicious persons or vehicles at or near the location around the time of the ignition
The second report that we are investigating is the deliberate ignition of 15 tons of bail straw that were located next to a barn by a public footpath at the top of DARK LANE in ALPORT. The fire has caused scorching to the exterior of the barn. This is believed to have occurred between 2015 hours and 2030 hours on Friday 18th August 2017. The crime reference to which this relates is: 17000354912.
We are appealing for information from anyone that may have been using the footpath around the time who may have sighted any suspicious persons’ or vehicles that could help us to identify who may be responsible.
At this stage it is unclear whether the fires are connected, but we would however like to take this opportunity to advise members of our rural community to be vigilant in respect of the recent reports due to the property that has been targeted.

60 apprenticeships vacancies
Apprenticeships for more than 60 young people are on offer.
The apprenticeships are in:
health and social care − providing care for people in our older people’s homes − 39 vacancies
adult care catering − helping to provide meals for people in our older people’s homes − 16 vacancies
business administration − five vacancies.
Our Cabinet Member for Council Services, Councillor Angelique Foster, said:
“Apprenticeships are a great way for a young person to get a start on the career ladder and I’m delighted that we have so many opportunities available.
“With an apprenticeship at the council you can earn while you learn, receive on-the-job training and gain a qualification that employers really value.
“By joining one of the county’s largest employers you’ll gain vital knowledge that will be valued by employers in all sectors. And by working with our experienced employers you will also gain valuable skills.”
We will accept applications from anyone aged over 16, either school leavers or those looking to train in something new. Previous applicants need not apply.

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB
Getting towards the end of the season only three more matches in the Tuesday League and four in the Thursday. A good win and what we could call a good loss this week.
Tuesday League.
Away – August 15 – Whitworth Park.
Good result against a team currently third in the league. Tony and Dawn could do no wrong and finished winning 21 – 0. Although we only won one other game our points tally was considerably greater than Whitworth because of this win. Rick and Edith came home with a 21 – 7 win, whilst Clara and Harry got a much deserved 15 points. Dennis and Sue also got 11 points against Whitworth’s best pair. The final result Parwich 68, Whitworth 49. Can’t be bad. Two matches next week in order to play the cancelled match against Wirksworth.
Next Match – Away – 21 August – Wirksworth – 5.30pm. ( Cancelled match ).
Away – 22 August- Matlock Bath – 6.00pm.
Thursday League
Away – Bakewell – 17 August.
Bakewell got promoted ahead of us in the league last year winning by 3 points. They are bottom of the higher league and we are second last. Shows what a good standard the higher league is. We did well in the doubles winning one game and losing one by a single point. The third game was a win for Bakewell. Bakewell 61, Parwich 53. Close games in the singles and although we only won two of the games we just finished 7 points down. All in all however, we got a very creditable score, albeit a loss. Bakewell 143, Parwich 128. I don’t think this result will increase our chances of shooting up the league.
Next match – Home – Matlock Park – 24 August – 1.45pm
MONDAY NIGHT IS BOWLS NIGHT
6.30pm – 7.30pm.

We have received the following press release from Derbyshire County Council.
Derbyshire Connect services to be rolled out countywide
Community transport users will continue to receive life-line services as Derbyshire Connect buses are rolled out countywide.
We have pledged to continue supporting Dial-a-Bus (DAB)- style ‘shopping’ buses and aCTive Travel journeys to healthcare appointments.
These services are for people unable to use conventional transport because of mobility difficulties or because they live in areas − usually rural − where public transport is limited.
A new Derbyshire Connect service has been trialled in the Ashbourne and Wirksworth area since February. Contracts to operate the service across the county have now been awarded and will start in October − continuing to take people to supermarkets, shops, banks and medical appointments at hospitals, clinics, the doctors, dentists and opticians.
Councillor Trevor Ainsworth, our Cabinet Support Member for Highways, Transport and Infrastructure, said:
“This is great news for community transport users. We are aware that there have been concerns among some passengers that their services were ending because funding was being withdrawn. This is not the case − funding is being provided in a different way.”
Councillor Ainsworth added:
“We know how important getting out and about is for people to retain their independence and we are clear on our commitment to continue to support the most vulnerable, particularly in rural and isolated communities, ensuring they have the same opportunities as they currently have, to travel to vital services.”
Funding for DAB and aCTive Travel services is currently provided by the council to the county’s six community transport schemes through grants.
Following a legal challenge, which makes it more difficult to provide funding in this way, the new Derbyshire Connect services will be run under contract.
Ashbourne Community Transport, based in Ashbourne, won the contract to provide shopping buses to cover the Derbyshire Dales, High Peak and South Derbyshire.
Community Transport for Town and County (CT4TC), based in Chesterfield and Ripley, will run shopping buses in Amber Valley, Bolsover, Chesterfield, Erewash and North East Derbyshire.
South Derbyshire Community Volunteers Service, based in Swadlincote, will provide journeys to medical appointments in South Derbyshire and in the south of the Derbyshire Dales.
Ashbourne Community Transport, Erewash Community Transport, based in Ilkeston, and Community Transport Swadlincote will run services to healthcare appointments in Amber Valley and Erewash.
And CDGi Training Limited − a specialist healthcare transport provider based in Eckington – will put on aCTive Travel services in Bolsover, Chesterfield and North East Derbyshire.
Bakewell and Eyam Community Transport, based in Bakewell, The Bureau − Glossop’s voluntary and community network – New Mills Volunteer Centre and Voluntary and Community Services Peaks and Dales, based in Ashbourne and Buxton, will take passengers to medical appointments in the High Peak and north Derbyshire Dales.
Like the current DAB and aCTive travel services, the new Derbyshire Connect services will still need to be booked but will continue to run door-to-door with passenger assistants on hand to provide extra assistance, where necessary.
Councillor Ainsworth said:
“These new Derbyshire Connect buses will offer better value for money − around £7 per passenger to run compared to an average £16.57 for the current service − and provide a more customer focused service. Gold Card holders will also be able to travel for free − currently they have to pay − and in the longer term we expect them to develop into more flexible services to meet the needs of a wider range of customers.”

At this point I should be asking, like with the cats, for pictures of your allotment. However as we don’t have any allotments that would be rather pointless! Having finally been reunited with my Y Not wellies and the weather looking a bit more like summer over the weekend I’ve at last managed to spend a few hours in the garden. As a sometimes keen but not so knowledgeable gardener it doesn’t take much to put me off at this time of the year. My return to the garden was just in time to bump into this little fellow –
It’s been a busy time in Parwich with both highly successful Wakes and Open Gardens. The commitees running both events do a fantastic job and deserve the thanks of us all. I found the gardens I visited during Open Gardens to be very inspiring with lots of ideas and expertese shared. I don’t remember if I learnt anything over Wakes. For more inspiration,

We have received the following from the Chair of South Darley & Winster Pre-school, which we thought would be of local interest:
I am writing to you as Chair of the local playgroup running from the Burton Institute in Winster. Since we moved there last year our numbers have nearly quadrupled and we have extended our opening hours to 9am to 3pm, Monday to Thursday. I thought that parents in the Parwich area might be interested as it is possible to children to do full days with us.
South Darley Pre-school Parents is a registered charity run by a volunteer committee. It is registered for both the government tax free childcare scheme and from September 2017, 30 free hours of Early Years Education. Further information can be found on our website www.southdarleypreschool.co.uk.

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB
The weather played a part in this weeks jollies around the green, however what a show your village team players put up in the annual charity match.
Tuesday League.
August 8 – Away – Wirksworth.
Ready to roll, but the heavens had opened for most of the day. It is possible to play in the rain, but the only major weather problem on a crown green is a lightening storm. The snag is in the rain is to be able to judge the speed of the wood towards the jack. Rooster tails coming from the wood do not help. Anyway by the powers that be at Wirksworth it was decided that discretion being the better part of valour, the match should be cancelled. We will have to play a couple of Tuesday League matches next week.
Next Match – 15 August – Home – Whitworth Park – 6.30pm.
????????? – Away Wirksworth.
Thursday League
The Greenaway Trophy
So the annual bash to raise money for the Greenaway Centre took place this week. This is a competition open to all players in the Thursday League, in excess of 250. The pairs matches last all day and are played on a knockout basis. There are two sides to the competition with pairs who get knocked out in the first round playing in a repêchage competition. Now for those of you who have lived in the Village for a while will know of a chap, who is no longer with us, but who was the first player from Parwich to win the Trophy, Ron Birch. Ron was a great sportsman with many great sporting achievements to his name, one of which was playing for West Bromwich Albion in the First Division of the Football League. Since then John B has won the competition twice and various others have come close, so how would we do this year? Well, pretty well indeed. We had four players in the quarter finals in both the main draw and the repêchage, leading to three players in the semifinals and one player won the thing! This year our Edith, ably assisted by a Wirksworth player came out on top of the main Competition. She played a blinder. Unstoppable is a word that springs to mind. Great result for Edith. Commiserations to our other players who got so far.
Next match – Away – Bakewell – 17 August – 1.45pm
MONDAY NIGHT IS BOWLS NIGHT
6.30pm – 7.30pm.
Not sure about this Monday’s fun time. It could be that the cancelled match against Wirksworth will be played.

Dales residents invited to have their say on parking review
Derbyshire Dales District Council is asking local people for their views on possible changes to its car parking policy.
The council undertook a detailed parking policy review in 2013 when a number of changes were approved and implemented.
Other recommendations were put on hold for further consultation and this process has now started, giving people an opportunity to have their say on the possibility of charging for some existing free car parks and revising charges for season tickets.
The free car parks in question are Ashbourne’s Cokayne Avenue, Cromford’s Market Place and Lime Yard, Matlock’s Edgefold Road and Wirksworth’s Canterbury Road and North End. Continue Reading »

We have been asked by the Parish Council to publicise the next Village Maintenance Day which will be held on Sunday the 8th of October.
The particular tasks to be tackled will be discussed and planned at the next Parish Council Meeting on the 20th of September.
The Parish Council hopes that by giving advance notice, more people will be able to take part. Even if you can only give an hour or two you will be very welcome. The more people we have the more we can get done on the day.

Well I guess after staying under the radar for the last 15 months it’s time we said ” Hi “. Chris & I live at Hall Gates with our two cats , Toby & Willow. Our move to Parwich only brought us a short distance from Buxton in May 2016.
Chris runs his own business – Derbyshire Stock Fencing LTD & covers most areas of the UK & I am a Reiki practitioner.We both love the great outdoors so to be able to enjoy the peace & tranquility that Parwich offers is a real privilege. We are both avid motorcycle / road racing enthusiasts & top up this passion whenever we can – hence the photo !!!!!!

It has been about 4,000 years since the first cats were domesticated by the Ancient Egyptians and believe it or not, Tuesday 8th August is International Cat Day – an annual celebration of our moggy companions!
To celebrate we would like to put a collection of photos of the cats from our local area together in a post that will be published on Tuesday. So please email us at parwich@hotmail.co.uk with pictures of your cats, along with their names before 6 pm on Monday night.

I’ve just driven past the YNOT site, and to be honest, was pretty shocked – not just at the state of the fields (litter that will end up in a landfill which in itself is both ironic and depressing considering we live in a place of natural beauty) but the state of the road. The verges are pretty torn up. Who is responsible for fixing them? And does the license to hold the festival include a time frame to get the place ‘back to normal’? Usually there has been a team of folks cleaning up soon after this event, but not so with the new owners it appears.

Update for Bradbourne & Parwich Heating Oil Club
Crude has settled around $52 a barrel this week, however, with the pound falling back against the dollar in recent days, we have seen kerosene prices gently rise for a fourth consecutive week.
