PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

Two for the price of one this week, but it is a bit like the curates egg, good in parts. I think we can safely say that our stay in the exhausted heights of the top division in the Thursday League is rapidly coming to an end. Was it Mickey Mouse or Donald Duck who said ‘it is not the winning, but the taking part that counts’ or similar words, or perhaps a French feller on about the Olympics, good old Pierre.

Tuesday League.
July 25 – Away – Bakewell.
The week off did us a little bit of good for this weeks match. We shared the four games, two apiece, but thankfully our pairs defeated their opponents with less scores against us. As you all know points mean prizes, or wins in our case. Dawn and Tony and Edith and Rick both managed to win 21 – 10. Whilst Harry B and Dot fought like demons to get 14 points. Best not mention John and Pat B’s result except to say they lost. The final score however was a win 64 – 62. Not a very big margin, but big enough. Our first win in ages.
August 1 – Home – Bradwell.
The rain had poured down for most of the day and there was a possibility that the match could not take place, however we all prevailed in the end and thank goodness we did. The troops were in storming form with Pat B and Harry B leading the way with a 21 – 2 win. Edith and Rick powered home 21 – 9, and even our esteemed captain Dawn, ably supported by Dot, won 21 – 11. To put the icing on the cake Dennis and Clara E charged home winning  21 – 15. Parwich 84, Bradwell 37.
Doubt if we will get to such giddy heights next week though.
Next Match – 8 August – Away – Wirksworth – 6.30pm.

Thursday League
July 27 – Away – Bradwell – 1.45.
The good thing about going to Bradwell is the journey is a nice one, the rest of the afternoon needs to be forgotten quickly. We only managed to win one game out of the three doubles and six singles played. Four defeats in a row now. Will the run ever end? Dennis and Audrey B put up a good show before accepting defeat 14 – 21. After the doubles we trailed 32 – 63.
Only one win in the singles, I can hardly believe it, although we came mighty close in three other games. Even so we were down 70 – 88. The final score, Bradwell 151(only 2 points away from a maximum 153), Parwich 102.
Unfortunately we are playing the top of the league next. Hang onto your hats.
Home – Hope Works – 3 August – 1.45pm.
Playing the top of the league is daunting enough at the best of times, but playing them in the form we are in – HELP. However we did not do so bad. The star performance of the day was Audrey B and Sue A beating a really good pair 21 – 18. Our other pairs did well too Clara and Dennis losing 16 – 21 and similarly Tony A and Ian J going down 14 – 21. A terrific show.
Now what this team do is only turn up to most matches with 9 players. We on the other hand say if you come to the green you get a game even if you are on crutches. Playing with
only 9 players is perfectly within the rules, but it does mean of course that 3 players have a very distinct advantage of getting used to the green. In the singles the 3 players who had already played in the doubles all won and two out of the remaining 3 didn’t. I rest my case. The final score although a loss was a very creditable result Parwich 116, Hope Works 139. At least we won’t have to play them next year.
No match next week in this league. It’s the annual Charity Match in aid of the Greenaway Centre.

MONDAY NIGHT IS BOWLS NIGHT
6.30pm – 7.30pm.
Last week we were positively inundated with people ‘having a go’ on the green. You could not move for jacks (the little white thing you aim at) and Jills. Come down next week and get involved. Bring the kids. It’s school holidays for the passed week. I bet they are bored out of their heads.
PS. If you can’t make Mondays just let Tony (724) or John (455) know and we will arrange an alternative.

John B.

So far as we can tell from Rightmove, as of August 4th 2017, there are actually no properties for sale or rent in our area (Alsop-en-le-Dale, Ballidon, Parwich & Pikehall).

We will update this post in due course but please let us know if you have any further (or more up to date) information.

Bowls

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

I suppose one consolation for only having one match this week is that we can only lose once, which indeed we did! However, I have great, if misleading fortitude, for the rest of the season. Hope springs eternal as they say.

Tuesday League.
July 18 – Blank week.
Next week we travel to Bakewell which is a problem in a number of ways, not least of which is trying to find somewhere to park. Always assuming you can find somewhere that is slightly closer than Chatsworth you then have to play on their green. Notwithstanding the fact that they are a great bunch of people the green is really tricky. Most greens are predominantly square whereas Bakewell’s is very oblong due to the fact you are playing in a very narrow public park overlooked on the sides by buildings. We will have to see how we get on.
Next Match – 25 July – Away – Bakewell, 6.30pm.

Thursday League
July 20 – Home – Hathersage – 1.45.
Not even our redoubtable singles players could rescue us this week. Our doubles pairs, however, played well against strong opposition. Harry and Audrey B cancelling a loss by winning 21 – 10. Ian J and Sue A, although losing played very well. After the doubles we only trailed Hathersage by 7 points.
The singles, although the games were shared 3 each, did not go well. It’s points that win prizes and their defeats were not as great as ours. Since joining the Club this year Keith B has only lost one game and again this week he was one of our three winners, Edith and Tony A being the other two. Their victories though were not good enough to give us a win. Final score Parwich 109, Hathersage 127.
Next match – Away – Bradwell – 27 July – 1.45pm.

MONDAY NIGHT IS BOWLS NIGHT
6.30pm – 7.30pm.
Don’t forget that on Mondays we are at Parsons Croft and we need the practise more than ever. All we need is you.
PS. If you can’t make Mondays just let Tony (724) or John (455) know and we will arrange an alternative.

John B.

Parish Council Meeting Agenda

The agenda for the Parish Council Meeting on the 19th July 2017 has been published here

In the News……

Derbyshire Advertiser 22 June 1917

1917 22 Jun Derbys Ad Twigge duck

Although no-one would want to see cruelty to a duck it does seem surreal that while many young men were being slaughtered in France, a case of cruelty to a duck is being taken to court back home. Although James Twigge is not an uncommon name at that time, it is likely to be the James Twigge who later farmed with his brother Ernest at Station Road Farm.  George Slater was the postman (with one arm) who was living in Shaw Lane in 1911 and then lived in the one up one down house in The Square . Frank Gibbs is likely to be the uncle to Len Gibbs of Lenscliffe and Mary Ellen Rodgers the wife of George Herbert Rodgers who many will know kept the greengrocers at Mount Pleasant.

Butterfly Reserve Open Day

Hoe Grange Quarry

The first Open Day for Derbyshire’s first Butterfly Reserve has been organised for Sunday the 23rd of July from 11 am to 3 pm.

Members of Butterfly Conservation East Midlands, including Ray Walker (Hon Warden), Derek Brownlee (Hon Assistant Warden) together with Pat and Ken Orpe will be able to show visitors around this abandoned limestone quarry where already 24 species of butterflies have been recorded including Dark Green Fritillary and the Peak District version of the Brown Argus. It will also be possible to see the work that many volunteers have done to enhance the habitat so as to increase the biodiversity at the site.

Directions. From the cross road in the centre of Longcliffe village, proceed in a north westerly direction towards Slipper Low Farm and just after the brow of the first hill, take the first left, just before a bungalow, and then proceed down a limestone track and park by the entrance gates to the Nature Reserve at the end of the track (SK222562).

As usual the event can’t happen without the army of volunteer helpers on the night. If you are able to help, especially with marshalling the event, please contact Nia on 661

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB

We are in great need of new wheels. We lost all of them last week and are still trying to find some. Does anybody know where you can get four new ones. Selector tyres might do us a deal. Four new players would do us better!

Tuesday League.
July 11 – Away – Whitworth Park.
A poor night in all respects. Not only did we not play well, but it chucked it down with rain. Harry and John B gave us a good start winning 21 – 11. This was countered by Sue and Clara losing 21 – 9. Rick and Edith came back from the dead, but just failed 20 – 21. Dawn and Dennis again tried really hard, in the end they had to succumb 21 – 8. Final score Whitworth 74, Parwich 58.
Although we had a poor game last week and this week we will hopefully not drop too many places down the league. No match next week so at least we can keep trying to find our wheels.
Next Match – Blank week.

Thursday League
July 13 – Home – Baslow – 1.45.
Strange match this week even though it was on our midden. You would have thought that with Tony and Clara winning 21 – 4 (Clara playing with her special laser guided new woods) that we were on to a good thing. Unfortunately one of our pairs lost 21 – 3. Game even. John H and Sue were 18 – 4 down and clawed their way back to lead 20 – 19. regrettably on the next end they went two down. 21 – 20 Baslow.
For once we really lost our way in the singles winning only one game out of six. The final result was Parwich 98, Baslow 122. Looking at things from an optimistic viewpoint we got three more points than last week! Perhaps what we should do is to bury a killer whale under our green which we can call upon when times get hard.
Next match – Home – Hathersage – 20 July – 1.45pm.

MONDAY NIGHT IS BOWLS NIGHT
6.30pm – 7.30pm.
Don’t forget that on Mondays we are at Parsons Croft and boy do we need the practise. We actually saw a new person on the green last Monday! Hope he comes again this Monday.
PS. If you can’t make Mondays just let Tony (724) or John (455) know and we will arrange an alternative.

John B.

Football Update

Massive thanks to Phil Kirkham for purchasing a bargain line marker for a £20 donation to a local sports club and then spending a lot of time making it as ‘good as new’, and without any charge (only a pint of beer), parents of the Friday Football feel free to buy Phil a beer when you see him, he deserves it!

Big thanks to Charlie Jones for helping mark out the football pitch with our new marker! Great job Charlie…it looks amazing!

Friday Football – Children only, 5.30 start

It is 12 months ago since we started Friday Football, we actually started on 15 July 2016, and doesn’t time fly! I remember wondering if any children would actually turn up, and they did….

We continue to have a regular weekly turnout of 20+ children and usually 2-3 helpers (which I am eternally grateful to!).

We have recently purchased a line marker (thanks Phil) and line marking paint £70, probably enough to last a couple of years.

We are about to purchase some new balls as our existing balls are looking a bit tired, worn out and several are leaking.

Sunday Football – Older children and Adults, 6.30 start

We are still a little light on numbers; we normally get between 8-12 people playing. We need more….

5 a-side is great, but 4 a-side is very tough. We need 2 or 3 additional regulars. Come-on, dust off your trainers and get yourself down to the cricket pitch. It is great fun, good for your health and also good for our community spirit.

Hopefully see you on Sunday.

Thank you again to everyone for your support (parents, helpers, donators, Phil K and also the players).

We welcome everyone to come down and watch the children, see how much they have progressed and how much they are enjoying themselves!
