1917 12 Jan farm to let

Douglas Twigge lived at Flaxdale in 1911. In the 1910 Valuation, Flaxdale had 37 acres. These 32 acres for rent are likely to be the part of Flaxdale off Dam Lane ( that is now known as Flaxdale Holdings) with the other 3 acres being adjacent to the house. In 1910 Ernest Webster owned Flaxdale. Did Mr Allsopp own it in 1917 or was he the agent?

Local Military Service Tribunals heard applications for exemption for military service. These applications could be made on grounds of doing work of national importance, business or domestic hardship, medical unfitness and conscientious objection. County Appeals Tribunals heard appeals against decision made by local Military Service Tribunals.

Who was this Parwich farmer? The 1910 survey and 1911 census would indicate that the most likely candidate was William Bunting from Low Moor. However a member of the Bunting family has told me that by 1917 William was living at Middle Hills. Has anyone any idea who this farmer was from the description of his family and the acreage farmed?

I DANIEL BLAKE

Winner of the BAFTA Outstanding British Film, this moving film, directed by famous Ken Loach, tells of a 59 year old carpenter who is recovering from a heart attack. He befriends a single mother and her two kids as they navigate their way through the impersonal, Kafkaesque benefits system. With equal amounts of humour, warmth and despair, the journey is heartfelt and emotional until the end.

Shrove Tuesday

Today is Shrove Tuesday; it’s the day before Lent starts (which is on Ash Wednesday). Another name for this day is ‘Pancake Day’. The name comes from the custom of using up all the fattening ingredients in the house before Lent, so that people were ready to fast during Lent. In days gone by, for most people, these ingredients were often eggs and milk. A very simple recipe to use up these ingredients was to combine them with some flour and make pancakes!
My favourite tried and tested pancake recipe is pretty quick and simple, it requires no ‘resting’ and it comes from my old friend Delia Smith. Click here to be taken to the recipe on her website, or on continue reading, below, for a copy of the recipe.

When I was growing up (a process that is still largely incomplete….), there were two main toppings for pancakes:
• lemon juice and caster sugar, or
• golden syrup.

A more swish alternative was to make crepe suzette – a boozy orange liqueur recipe. Click here for Delia’s version.

These days there are so many cooking programmes on TV and so many different ingredients available to us, from all over the world, and I was wondering if anyone had any unusual or favourite pancake recipes, or toppings that they would like to share…..?

On a slightly different note…. Obviously Ashbourne is famous for the Shovetide football. But… did you know that in Scarborough Shrove Tuesday has been known as Skipping Day for around 100 years? The foreshore road on the south bay is closed and everyone heads over to the beach to participate in ‘long-rope’ skipping! (I kid you not and, to demonstrate, here is a photograph from 2015, courtesy of the scarborough.co.uk website!) There were also sand castle competitions and pancake races on the beach…..

Again, I was wondering…… are Ashbourne and Scarborough unique, or does anyone know of any other unusual customs in other parts of the country?

…Two Feet Apart

Spring is fast approaching and our winter visitors are departing, it’s time to start thinking gardens!img_3444

After reading Emma’s recent post about the best broad bean and tomatoes seeds to grow in Parwich I got to thinking how much gardening knowledge there is in the village and how little I know! Though I’ve successfully grown both for the last two years I was embarrassed to post a comment as the beans came as small plants labelled “Broad Beans” from Homebase and the tomatoes nicely planted up in large hanging baskets having been grown on in the big greenhouses at Wyaston Nurseries. My gardening experience seems to revolve around rotting rose blossoms, mildewy bears britches, brown spotted broad beans, non-appearing carrots and hosting slug and snail parties.

So now you know my level of gardening knowledge you will understand why I thought it would be a good idea to start a regular gardening post on the blog where we could share the pool of local knowledge with us newcomers/novice gardeners. After all what grows happily in Berkshire won’t necessarily survive in Parwich. There always seems to be people with too many seeds/plants/crops so this could be a useful sharing and swopping point. So welcome to the place where you can ask the gardening questions you were always afraid to ask!

Plant of the Month

The first regular feature is my garden plant of the month (always assuming any plants survive! ). This month it is the Galanthus – the Snowdrop. Our garden seems to be crowded with them at the moment – not planted by me I should add.

img_0927

I’ve read they should be lifted and divided every 3-4 years, after flowering. We’ve been here for 3 years so I guess that’s a job for me sometime soon?

For Project of the month, Any Answers and Jobs for the garden… Continue Reading »
