PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB
Last week’s glorious weather was followed by the heavens opening on Thursday and the match having to be abandoned. Having played bowls for more years than I care to remember this is the first time a match has been called off.
Matlock Tuesday League.
Home – Whitworth Park – 23 August – 6.00pm.
Early starts now, it is quite amazing how quickly the nights are drawing in and we haven’t even got passed August yet. Whitworth were a fair way ahead of us in the league, 19 points to be exact so we needed to try our best. We managed to win three of the four games and came a close second in the other. Dot H propping up John B again won 21 – 9. Dawn A and Tony a won 21 – 12 with the ever reliable Edith and Rick chipping in with a 21 – 16 win. Adding the 15 points we got in the fourth game gave us a win 78 – 58. Now you maths buffs will have already clocked that we won by 20 points and thus have overtaken our opponents in the league! Only two more matches left in this league now.
- Next match – Away – Chatsworth – 30 August – 6.00pm.
Matlock Thursday League.
Away – Bradwell – 25 August – 1.45.
So for the first time that I can recall the match had to be called off. It sheeted down! Unlike the cricket we unfortunately do not have recourse to the Duckworth- Lewis method to decide who has won the match so we will have another go next Wednesday. Perhaps in such circumstances we could automatically award the match to the away team on the basis that they had to travel. Alternatively we could have a game of tiddlywinks. Thinking about it we might do a bit better at that.
Next match – Away – Bradwell – 31 August – 1.45 pm – Wednesday.- Next match – Home – Bakewell – 1 September – 1.45pm
John B.

Thank you to the Parish Council for this information:
The Parish Council is aware that the condition of the roads in, and around, the village is of concern to residents. The responsibility for maintaining the roads rests with Derbyshire County Council. DCC operate an on-line form for accessing information and reporting various issues which can be found here.
To report a pothole select
- Report or request
- Fault on Road
- Road condition
then select the picture that matches the pothole and add its location and comments and/or photographs.
The following have already been reported by the Clerk in April with photographic evidence.
- Near the Cottage and Nether Green
Deep pothole – Reported on 6 April 2016, I believe this pothole has been reported before but there has been no repair. This pot hole is approximately 9cm deep It is on the main route through. Parwich It is on a narrow lane frequently used by cyclists in groups. If a cyclist were unable to avoid it the risk of serious injury would be very high.Current status: Job authorised
- Near Church View
Shallow pothole – The surface has broken up around iron works in the road leaving a 6cm exposed sharp metal edge. This is a hazard to cyclists and pedestrians.Current status: Enquiry noted
- B5056 to Ashbourne
Subsidence – This road has been damaged by heavy lorry traffic in a number of places. This is the main route from several villages and businesses into Ashbourne. There is concern that failure to address the condition of this road will lead to further deterioration resulting in more costly and disruptive repairs being required.Current status: Enquiry noted
So as you will realise nothing has happened very quickly. The Parish Council appears to have no more influence than anyone else using the reporting form. However it may be that if more people report the same issues indicating their continued concern then they might be given a greater priority.
Andrew Martin.
Parish Clerk.

Thanks in advance, Katy W.

The cooker previously sold but will not fit in the kitchen of the new owner. Great opportunity to get something to keep you warm in the long cold nights ahead.
Does anyone in the village need an AGA cooker?
“It is oil fired and as well as cooking, it also heated our hot water supply, we have no idea how old it is, but it has been regularly serviced. It will be decommissioned in about two weeks time. We do not want anything for it, but whoever wants it must take it away themselves”.

The Sycamore redecorations are progressing well, so keep Friday 2nd September free in your diary for the grand re-opening (see https://parwich.org/2016/08/11/sycamore-re-launch-planned/).
Kirsty is continuing the newspaper orders, so if you have a paper on Saturday or Sunday they will be available to collect. Currently the Shop @The Sycamore is open each day from 10am to 2pm, and we will keep you updated as things progress.
However the list of who gets what newspaper has been mislaid, so if you could let Kirsty or Jane know what weekend papers you want that would be a great help. Either call into the Shop this lunch time or phone 390 212.

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB
After last week’s heroics by the members in the Greenaway it was back to business as usual. Of course we did have the excitement of the drone. I can’t get over how small the pilots are these days. Everybody survived and the weather was glorious.
Matlock Tuesday League.
Away – Matlock Golf Club – 16 August – 6.30pm.
We always struggle against the Golf Club and this match was no different. We had played out a draw on our green so we wanted to try to get the extra point, as it was we needed more carrots as the match ended in the dark. Fortunately the Golf Club being the rich people they are have got flood lights. Anyway we shared the games two each with one of the Golf Club players, playing out of her skin. Well done Marian. As it was Harry B and John B had one of their better outings winning 21 – 7. Dawn A and Tony A playing with miners helmets on won 21 – 18. Close as the other games were the final score was a win for the Golf Club 67 – 65. Hopefully we won’t slip down a place.
- Next match – Home – Whitworth Park – 23 August – 6.30pm.
Matlock Thursday League.
Home – Youlgrave – 18 August – 1.45.
Despite still not managing to get a camel buried under the green and the organisation of an intimidating drone flying overhead we only just beat Youlgrave. The doubles games ended one point ahead for Youlgrave with Sue A and Clara E losing by one point. Youlgrave 52, Parwich 51.
Thankfully our inimitable singles players won all but one of the six games. Tony A winning 15 -8. The remaining games were very tight, Dot H just getting home 15 – 14 after a great fight back. Parwich 132, Youlgrave 124. Our average score in this league is 130 points per match so we were right on target. We are still in second place in the league and unless we can start losing well we are going to get promoted.
- Next match – Away – Bradwell – 25 August – 1.45 pm
Good matches last Sunday with Edith and Tony lifting their respective crowns as champions. This Sunday the Nadin Cup starts at 2.00pm. Why not come along.
Still think we should offer to play in the Olympics.
John B.

The planned drone survey of a possible location for a mobile phone mast near the tennis courts took place today. We are now waiting to see what, if any, proposals are made.
The drone also flew over the church to inspect the roof. This was not to assess another location for a mobile phone mast.

There is a story in the Ashbourne News Telegraph regarding a month of road closures that are worth noting and perhaps replanning routes through the town. Or you could be like me, read all the advance notices, drive past the signs everyday and then get stuck in a jam in the centre! 😦

Lovely red skies last night over Parwich.

Followed by a misty morning this morning. Is the end of summer in sight?

Mobile phone mast
There is a possibility that a mobile phone mast could be installed in place of one of the floodlights at the tennis courts. A drone may be flying in the area on Thursday afternoon to establish if it would give useful coverage. The drone is fully licensed for this work.
This is just a feasibility study. No decision has been taken about agreeing to have a mast installed. This would be subject to normal planning regulations and would require the Parish Council to agree to lease the small piece of ground the mast would stand on.
If it appears that a mast would be technically feasible the Parish Council will request more detail about what the mast would look like and the benefits would be. They will then use the blog to share this information and ask for comments before any decision is made.
