Our Weatherman in the Village says:
It’s too early for autumn! This unseasonal weather doesn’t look like changing in the coming week though, so expect more of the same – cool temperatures, breezy and showery conditions. Time for a break in the Med? ……

Do you remember this photo from July, of the swallows amazing skill of drinking whilst still on the wing?

Well this recent fledgling illustrates that is a skill that has to be mastered, pictured here by John F-S ignominiously flat on the water and then taking off again.

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB
Only one league match this week because of the Greenaway Competition, and judging by the result of the one we played it was just as well.
Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Away – Matlock Golf Club – 12 August.
Perhaps what we should have done was to challenge the opposition to a round of golf instead of bowls; we surely could not have done any worse. We only managed to win one game and that was our redoubtable pair Edith and Rick and even they struggled. From being second in the division a few matches ago we are plummeting down the table at a great rate of knots. The final score was Golf Club 69 Parwich 43. At least we played well up until the middle of the season. I can’t believe we have only three matches left and then that’s it until next April.
- Next match – Home – Bradwell – 19 August – 6.00pm.
Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Greenaway Charity Competition – 7 August.
As I mentioned last week this Competition is to try to raise much needed funds for the Greenaway Centre in Darley Dale. The weather is usually very kind to us and this year was no exception, it only rained very lightly for a short time. Our members have done well in past years, and have won the shield on quite a few occasions. Not to be this year though. You are given a partner for the Competition so it is very much the luck of the draw. Both Rick M and Ian J and Val K (playing together) were knocked out in the semi – final. Better luck next year hopefully. The Charity however will benefit from a shed load of money thanks to the Bowlers digging deep.
- Next match – Away – Hope Works, Hope. – 21 August.
We are playing our Round Robin Club competition this Sunday, starting at 10.30 at Parsons Croft. You are welcome to join us any time during the day.

We have received the following update from DDDC:
An investigation into fire damage to the plant room at Derbyshire Dales District Council’s Ashbourne Leisure Centre has revealed that the pool will have to remain closed for the rest of the Summer.
The pool hasn’t been available since a blaze broke out late on Saturday 26 July, although all “dryside” facilities – including the fitness suite, sports hall and squash courts – have remained open as usual.
Various contractors, insurance assessors and specialists have now completed their inspections. Exact cost and timescales are not yet known, but the replacement of two damaged filtration units is the biggest time issue facing the District Council. A DDDC spokesperson said: “Once the insurance company has approved the works, like-for-like replacement could mean placing an overseas order and a lead time of several weeks. We are trying to source a faster alternative, but the likelihood is that we’re now looking at the autumn at the earliest before the pool is back in use.” At one stage the blaze – thought to have started outside the building – spread to the roof, but fortunately the centre’s new changing village, currently nearing completion, was not affected.
Derbyshire police arrested a 16 year-old and two 18 year-olds following the fire. The teenagers have been released on bail.

Parwich is now the proud owner of its very own static defibrillator!! Thanks to Lottery funding, Waitrose and local charities and the organisational efforts of Martin C, on behalf of Parwich First Responders, villagers will have this kit at their disposal to use in the event of a heart attack when there are no First Responders available to assist.
How does it work? As always the first step will be to dial 999. If there is no First Responder to be dispatched the caller will be advised that they can get our static defibrillator and given instructions how to operate it. This equipment can then be used until such time as an ambulance arrives.
How will I know what to do? The defibrillator will “talk” you through what you need to do. However, training for the entire village will be provided (hopefully at the end of September) to ensure that you are confident to use it. Parwich First Responders strongly recommend that you attend this training so that you know exactly what to do to save the life of a loved-one at what will be a traumatic time.
Remember: the earlier chest compressions followed by use of a defibrillator (if appropriate) are started, the better the outcome for the patient.
Please watch this space for further information. We also hope to deliver information to each household.

Katy at Village Games says “the teacher says it is very much free style and will be adapted to the participants which turn up however saying that is aimed more at the parents and children (mummies and daughters dancing together etc) rather than an experienced dancer, however that’s not to say we could not introduce a further session, should there be the interest in the village.”

If there is a clear sky tonight, watch out for the combination of full moon (a so called ‘supermoon‘, as its position in the sky creates an optical illusion of being significantly larger than normal) and the Persied meteor shower.

Our Weatherman in the Village says:
Just think….all that water falling today (Sunday) started its journey to us in the Caribbean Sea! Perhaps it would stay there in future?
Our lovely dry warm summer seems to have well and truly broken, and even my (still) broken rain gauge seems to have been shocked into life temporarily.
After today’s deluge, the weather for the coming weeks looks like being generally unsettled with blustery showers or longer periods of rain. Not a great week in prospect weather-wise……

Hello Possums,
Well I must tell you, all hell broke loose at Weedkiller’s headquarters recently, when our head canteen cook, Mavis Crow, learnt that her application to be included in the last 15,975 hopefuls for a place in ‘The Great British Bake Off’had been rejected. Apparently Mavis’s Spam and Stilton Quiche and her Coconut Crumble failed to impress the judges. The air was blue, as Mavis threw an almighty tantrum; pots and pans flying everywhere. ”It’s a bloody fix” she screamed, stubbing her fag out on her treasured signed photo of Paul Hollywood, ”They’re all pals of Mary Berry. It’s a flaming conspiracy.” It took two Newcastle Browns and a good swig of cooking sherry to calm her down. What a kerfuffle.
Hurry! Hurry! It’s the last few days of Parwich Blog’s furniture sale. We wont be beaten on price: buy now, pay nothing for ten years, then fifty year’s interest free credit; guaranteed Christmas delivery.
A French hospice is to open a wine bar for terminally ill patients at the Clermont Ferrand Hospital in Central France. The bar will stock a wide range of spirits, wine and champagne. A spokesman did say that the consumption of alcohol by patients will be carefully monitored to avoid the risk of long term alcohol dependency issues.
A Swedish woman was aghast to discover the skulls and bones of eighty people stored in IKEA bags in the basement of her local church. Apparently the remains were exhumed to allow building repairs to take place and had lain forgotten for some considerable time. A spokesman for IKEA has promised to forward instructions for self assembly of the skeletons which will be re-interred in flat pack coffins.

PARWICH CROWN GREEN BOWLS CLUB
Why do people take things so literally, we only wanted to lose the occasional match not to disappear into a losing spiral. Well at least we won one match this week.
Matlock Tuesday bowls league.
Home – Youlgrave – 5 Aug.
When we played at Youlgrave earlier in the year we played in a thunderstorm, one of the few times this year when this has occurred. It even tried to rain here this week, perhaps it would have been better had it done so. Harry B and Val K fought back well to win 21 – 17. Similarly Tony A and Dennis E lost narrowly 21 – 16. After two games only one point in it. The two final games ended 21 – 7 to Youlgrave (enough said) with Rick M and Edith R pulling out all the stops in their usual inimitable fashion to repeat a win for us 21 – 7. We therefore just lost the match by one point 65 – 66.
- Next match – Away – Matlock Golf Club – 12 August – 6.30pm.
Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Chatsworth A – 7 August.
We had been doing quite well in this league until last week’s painful loss, so we needed to get back into the swing of things this week. Our three doubles pairs did us proud winning two games to one and giving us a lead of 56 to 50.
As you avid readers of this scintillating copy will know our singles players do, more often than not, keep us in the match and quite often give us the winning edge. Thankfully they came through for us again this week winning four of the six games and only narrowly losing a fifth. This gave us a score of 78 – 66. The final overall result was 134 – 116 to Parwich. An excellent turnaround from last week. We had dropped down to fourth in the league after the loss so hopefully this win will give us a chance to go up a place.
No match next week in this league as it is the annual charity game to provide as much money as possible for the Greenaway centre in Darley Dale. Keep your fingers crossed for good weather. In the past Parwich players have done quite well in this competition let’s hope the trend continues.
- Next match – Away – Greenaway Competition – 14 August.
On Sunday we are playing a Club competition – Ladies and Men’s singles. Not sure the weather is going to be good though. See you down at Parsons Croft about 2.00ish. The kettle will be on.

As an Alsop myself, I made a backpacking trip in 2008 across Europe, and had to stop at Alsop en le Dale. I was peaking over the fence of the hall when a woman asked if she could help me. Understandably looking suspicious, I explained my situation. She showed me the church because I had previously not pushed hard enough on the door, and presumed it locked. The woman lived in the farmhouse right next to the church and offered to let me come to her home for tea. She made my trip to Alsop en le Dale spectacular. I wonder if there’s a way to send a thank you note to the kind woman that I met that day, as well as make a small contribution to the church.
Thank you,
Michael Alsop
