A charity event is taking place at Hill Top Farm on Friday 21st June, in aid of the East Midlands Air Ambulance: a service which demonstrated its importance to our community earlier in the year.

The main attraction is a live band, Purple Cloud of Funk, who perform a wide range of well known covers. You can find out more about them on their Facebook page, and you can hear samples of their music on their official website.

“We are lucky to get local band Purple Cloud of Funk”, says Robert Gosling, “as they were on Radio 1 a couple of weeks ago!”

There will be a bar and a burger van, and camping is even available for those who might need it!

Tickets are £6 in advance and £7 on the door. For tickets and information, please contact one of the numbers shown on the flyer below.

Derbyshire Dales District Council have made their new waste collection calendar available for download. This covers the period from May 30th to December 18th 2013.

Please click here to view it.

You can also find a link to this document on our INFO page, on the SITE MAP, and in the ELSEWHERE ON PARWICH.ORG section of the sidebar to your right. Weekly details are also published on our DIARY page, and on the weekly “What’s On” posts.

The Legion will be open from:

on Bank Holiday Sunday.

Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club

Can’t claim two wins this week we were well and truly beaten on Tuesday night. Did great on Thursday though.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Away – 21 May – Chatsworth.

Again the weather was not kind to us nor was our ability on the green! We were short of players this week because of people on holiday. To cap it all we had 17 points deducted for completing the score card incorrectly. The league Secretary is a stickler for getting the card absolutely right, so a poor score became even poorer. We lost 81 to 54 less the 17! Edith and Rick however kept up their impressive winning run. Let us hope we fare better next week.

  • Next match – Home – Buxton Park – 28 May 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Home – Matlock Bath – 23 May.

Even after last week’s good, but low score win, we still managed to retain third place in the Division. We again played really well this week. We were still short of players for this game and could only put a team of 10 together instead of the required 12. Ian and Audrey had a fabulous win 21 – 9 in the doubles helping us to a 57 -42 point advantage with the singles to come. We only lost one of the six singles games. This gave us an overall win 140 to 103. Hopefully with this resounding win we will stay in third place in the league. Next week we have to go north to Hathersage. Not sure at all if we will maintain our 100% winning record there.

  • Next match – Away – Hathersage – 30 May – 1.45pm.

We have a friendly game this weekend on Sunday at Ashbourne Park 2.00pm in the afternoon. These games are very enjoyable as it gives us a chance to play against teams who are not in our Leagues plus the afternoon tea the hosts provide is not bad either!!

A new novel from a Parwich boy

Thank you to Hugh for letting us know about a new novel with Parwich connections:

I thought you might be interested to know that my son, Jasper has just published his first novel.

I am of course biased, but it is brilliant. It is a thinking person’s thriller, and a great page turner. It is set in Venezuela, where he spent many months of research, and it contains wonderful descriptions of that country and its people. Its main character, Harry Christmas, is a thoroughly disreputable, highly intelligent, impossible but irresistible, hopeless case. The book is the story of his flight to Venezuela pursued by the homicidal maniac son of a woman he has cheated on.

Michael Palin read it and wrote “Very funny very unpleasant yet very touching at the same time”.

It is called “A Bright Moon for Fools” and is available from Amazon, and is in Waterstone’s branches across the UK among other bookstores. It is published as an ebook and in hardback, by the Inside the Dog Press ISBN 978-0-9574681-0-8.

Hello Possums,

Everyone in fine fettle? Good.

Seattle, Washington: Keen gardeners, from far and wide, flung off their clothes in celebration of the tenth anniversary of world naked gardening day. The organizer, Mark Storey, conducted a survey among members, and discovered that, funnily enough, gardening came a close second in the popularity stakes of unclothed activities. Just be jolly careful with those pruning shears girls.

Coronation Street is facing meltdown, after an effigy of Ken Barlow was defaced by vandals, whilst on display in a replica set of the Rovers Return at Madame Tussaud’s waxworks museum. I say “Bring back Ena Sharples, Minnie Caldwell and Martha Longhurst. Three milk stouts and a bit of juicy gossip about Albert Tatlock. There were no hanky-panky in them days, tha knows.”  Continue Reading »

Public urged to have their say on final list of parking recommendations

Derbyshire Dales District Council has rejected suggestions for a charge to be imposed on its popular residents’ parking permit. Charging for the permit, which is sent out free annually to all 33,000 households in the Dales, is not among the recommendations as a new round of public consultation starts this week (21 May) on proposed car parking changes in the district.

But local people can have their say on whether a charge of £100 should be introduced for anyone wanting to buy a second permit or replace a lost permit.

Meeting last week, the Environment Committee decided on the options local people will be asked to comment on online from 21 May at www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/parkingreview and via questionnaires available from the reception desks at MatlockTown Hall, Bakewell Agricultural Business Centre and the District Council’s leisure centres in Ashbourne, Bakewell, Matlock and Wirksworth.

The recommendations are:

* Introduce the option of a half hour charge within short stay car parks

* Designate specific town centre car parks as short stay only

* Introduce a flat rate charge for evening / overnight parking from 6.00pm to 6.00am

* Increase parking charges to help keep pace with inflation

* Bring additional car parks into charge

* Offer, at a charge, a second or replacement residents’ free parking permit  Continue Reading »

Could be tempting providence, but so far this year we have been playing really well. The weather however, has not been kind to us on quite a few match days. Tuesdays match was no exception.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Away – 14 May – Ashwood Park Buxton.

There were brass monkeys running round in packs on Tuesday night. It was freezing and throwing it down with rain. We start seasons quite well, but Ashwood have got off to an even better start. At the beginning of the match they were third in the division and we were about half way. We managed to share the four games, two each, with Edith and Rick playing their usual solid game and Dawn and Dot following suit. Our other two pairs unfortunately did not manage to win, although they kept trying. The final outcome was another win for us 67 to 62. This will hopefully keep us about half way in the division.
Next match – Home – Chatsworth B – 21 May 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Chatsworth B – 16 May.

Don’t let anybody else know, but before today’s match we were third in the league. The weather was a little kinder to us this afternoon. Having played our socks off in the doubles games last week, this week was unfortunately the complete opposite. Our pairs did not play badly, the opposition could do no wrong. We would have two or three bowls counting and the final ‘wood’ would come in form Chatsworth and take the shot. Before we knew anything we had lost the doubles 63 to 22. Not a true reflection of the games at all.

We do play quite well in the singles games and this week we excelled all our usual expectations. I have to say that you had to feel sorry for the opposition. Dawn won 15 to 0. Val won 15 to 1, Harry 15 to 5. The fight back was on! Although we only won one further game our point tally was 87 to us and 43 to Chatsworth. What a change around. The final score was therefore a win for us 109 to 106. We can’t keep this up can we?

Next match – Home – Matlock Bath – 23 May – 1.45pm.

No weekend matches this weekend, but if you fancy a go anytime give a member of the Club a call and we will meet up and ‘send a few down’.

Computers for Rural People

This email has been sent to the blog by Parwich Parish Council, the following appeared in a circular from Rural Action Derbyshire and provides information from a charity offering refurbished computers with some software and a warrenty for people in rural areas at a small cost.

Arthur Rank Centre – Computers for Rural People

Living in a rural area, whether on a farm miles from anywhere, or even in a country town, means spending time and money travelling about to get things done.

Email and Internet provide enormous opportunities when you can’t just pop round the corner to the shop or library etc, yet computers are usually expensive items, and few people want to buy one “just to see if one day it might be useful”. Once you have one and know how to use it, and appreciate what it can do, you don’t mind paying but that first step is often inhibited by the cost.

The Arthur Rank Centre is committed to supporting the rural community, and has set up the “Computers for Rural People” scheme to provide computers at very low cost to encourage people to take the first step.  Continue Reading »

Free caddy liners distributed across the Derbyshire Dales

The distribution of free compostable caddy liners to all 33,000 households across the Derbyshire Dales is set to be completed this week.

An annual supply of liners for residents’ kitchen food caddies was part of the agreement between Derbyshire Dales District Council and contractor Serco when a new recycling service was launched last autumn.Residents received an initial supply of the liners with their new recycling containers from October last year. From now on they will receive a free annual supply of 52 liners each year.

Additional liners can be bought online at www.caddyliners.com or from the District Council’s reception desks at the Town Hall in Matlock, Bakewell Agricultural Centre and the leisure centres in Ashbourne, Bakewell, Matlock and Wirksworth.

A District Council spokesperson said: “Local people might notice their annual supply of caddy liners differs from the initial supply as these have no printing on them, but they do comply with the strict compostable standards set by the recycling company. It’s important that only liners approved by the District Council are used to transfer food waste from kitchen caddies to kerbside caddies for the weekly collection. Alternatively, our message to residents is don’t use a liner at all; simply wash out your kitchen caddy after use.”

A wealth of information about waste and recycling in the Derbyshire Dales is available online at www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/waste

Flower Power

Celebrating flower power in the beautiful Dales

Flower power across the beautiful Derbyshire Dales is being celebrated through a new free publication.

‘Floral Dales 2013’ is a leaflet produced by Derbyshire Dales District Council, featuring dates and details of local well dressings, open gardens and flower festivals. The colourful guide is available from visitor information points across the Dales, including Ashbourne, Bakewell, Matlock Peak Rail and Matlock Bath. It is also free to view and download online at www.derbyshiredales.gov.uk/touristguides.

Tissington Well Dressings, on now until 15 May, is the first of 26 well dressings festivals in Derbyshire Dales villages and towns between now and mid-September.

The guide’s ‘Hidden Gems’ section features a list of open garden weekends at private houses that do not normally open to the public, and there’s also a ‘Meet the Experts’ schedule of top gardeners who open their gardens as part of the National Gardens Scheme.

Celebrate with the Over 60s

20130503-220727.jpg

Hello Possums,

This week saw the state opening of parliament. For the first time, Her Majesty the Queen was accompanied by Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall. The Prince looked resplendent sporting more medals and orders than the Imperial War Museum, including a frequent flier badge on loan from Prince Andrew. However, some minutes into the proceedings, the Queen was rudely interrupted by an extremely noisy marching band outside. HMSlamming down her notes, she stormed outside to remonstrate with them. “Will you lot keep quiet, One is trying to make a speech” she yelled. A burly band master approached and said “Who the **** do you think you are, Dame Helen Mirren?

The Italians are in the headlines again for doing what they do best, fleecing the tourists, robbery without violence. The Antica Roma ice cream parlour, adjacent to the famous Spanish Steps, charged four Brits £50.00 for three scoops of ice cream, whipped cream extra, toppings iceextra, sit down extra, breathe the air extra. The Mayor has apologized profusely and offered the tourists a tour of the city as recompense. Unfortunately luncheon is not included, as the Mayor considers the restaurants a complete rip off.

Open Singles Competition

Sunday 12 May was the first Club competition, the Open Singles. We had a good turnout of players which resulted in semis finals being played by Dawn Allsopp against Harry Bunting and the other semi was Edith Rider against John Henbery.

These semi finals were played first to reach 15. Dawn started really well and unfortunately for Harry she did not relinquish the lead and went through to her fifth final in six years! Edith by the same token started really well against John and got through comfortably to the final.

In the final Dawn again got off to a flying start and had reached 6 before Edith was on the card. Keeping up some really class bowling Dawn continued to forge ahead. It was not until Dawn got to 12 that Edith started to play as we all know she could. The score got to 14-12 to Dawn before Dawn put on another great display of bowling coming out on top 21 – 16, a really good match.

Dawn has now won this competition six times and five of those have come in the last six years. Can anybody stop her from getting another hat- trick of wins next year ? The weather may have been awful, but the bowls made up for that.

Congratulations Dawn.

Some good temperatures and a glorious Bank Holiday at the beginning of last week. The cooler and more unsettled conditions of the latter part of the week look likely to continue into the coming week with a mixture of sunshine and showers in prospect – good for the gardens.
