Although temporarily derailed by a serious thunderstorm on Friday night, which caused power to all the stages to be temporarily shut down as a precautionary measure, this year’s sold-out Y Not Festival was once again a great success. Here are a selection of tweets and videos from the weekend.

PP5The Parwich Panoramic 5 fell race started in 2009. Initially set up as a fund raiser towards the redevelopment of the Memorial Hall, our village hall, it has become an annual fixture in the fell runner’s calendar.

Further down the post is an outline of the Senior Race route, and information on the history of what you might see when taking it at a more leisurely pace than the PP5 competitors do. Please  walk the route and send in any photographs to parwich@hotmail.co.uk, as we hope eventually to produce a leaflet for both locals and visitors.

But first, here are the race results and photographs from previous years posted at parwich.org:

Paul B’s Weedkiller Weekly #40

Hello Possums,

ballotWell of course, the highlight of the week was the nail biting finish to the free and democratic Zimbabwe parliamentary elections. Once again Morgan Tsangirai was snapping at the heels of Robert Mugabi, but somehow managed to snatch defeat from the jaws of victory.

cricketPippa Middleton, not one for letting the grass grow under her feet, has taken on the challenge of explaining the ins and outs of jolly old cricket to our American friends across the pond. Good luck.

Our Weatherman in the Village says:

The changeable weather looks like continuing, which is a shame for the Ashes cricket match at Old Trafford – with all three results currently possible, a good day tomorrow (Monday) could see a classic finish! Unfortunately tomorrow doesn’t look too good with rain forecast to disrupt play, which would indicate the draw will be the most probable outcome. Tuesday however looks like being a better day for the Parwich Panoramic Five race. Wednesday onwards looks like being a return to the present unsettled theme with more rain possible.

Paper Sacks and White Lilac

Can anyone make use of some heavy duty paper sacks which hold 20kg in weight? Ideal for storing vegetables.

I am in the process of digging up rooted pieces of white lilac if anyone has a space in their garden needing to be filled.

This month’s Waitrose Charity

Thank you Helen for pointing out that putting our green tokens in the box for Brassington Brownies will help Parwich girls:

Please help Brassington Brownies.

This is the Brownie pack attended by girls from Parwich.
Each month Waitrose donate £1000 to be shared by 3 local groups. How much money each group receives is determined by the number of green tokens deposited by customers. During August, Brassington Brownies is one of the 3 choices and it would be great if you could support them.

Lift Required w/c 13 August

I don’t think the morning bus is running at the moment to Ashbourne, because school is out?

If so, would it be possible for anyone to give Sam Webster a lift into Ashbourne the mornings of 13 to 16 August? He needs to be in Mappleton by 9:30 am.

Thanks!

Lose some, WIN SOME!

Parwich Crown Green Bowls Club

Having played this week’s teams on their greens and been successful on both we needed to get back to our winning ways, thankfully we did.

Matlock Tuesday League.
Home – Ashwood Park – 30 July.

Having shared the games two apiece on Ashwood’s green we did the same again on our green, with the same result. Harry and Val played a stormer as indeed did Edith and Rick, both pairs winning their respective games 21 – 4. You can’t get too much better than that. In the two remaining games, although we lost them, our points scored were very good. In the end we only dropped nine points from the maximum possible of 84. Parwich 75, Ashwood 50. Our opponents next week beat us really well, plus we were penalised for completing the score card incorrectly. Let us hope we do better next week.

  • Next match – Home – Chatsworth – 6 August 6.30pm.

Matlock Thursday Friendly League.
Away – Chatsworth – 1 August 2013.

Audrey and Dennis played well in their doubles game, as indeed did Clara and Ian, but we only managed to win one of the three games. In the singles we won four out of the six games, with Dawn and Tony scoring heavily in their games. In the end we scored 79 out of a possible 90. This gave us a win by 126 to 120. We were mid table in the division and this score should keep us there. Next week we are at Matlock Bath, on their green. Keep your fingers crossed.

  • Next match – Away – Matlock Bath – 8 August – 1.45pm.

The Square Robin, played last Sunday, was a really good day and the outcome was unclear right until the final game. In the end Harry and Rick came out on top. Congratulations. The friendly match against Ashbourne Bowls Club due to be played this Sunday, has been cancelled.

Please click here for details of Derbyshire County Council’s proposed Winter Service Scheme for 2013/14.

If you are willing to participate in the Snow Warden Scheme for 2013/14 by becoming a snow warden for Parwich, to assist with clearance of village footpaths, please advise a member of Parwich Parish Council or contact the clerk to the parish council, by no later than 5th September 2013. This will enable paperwork, training and salt deliveries to be put in place in advance of any bad weather.

Hello Possums,

Well, obviously, the week’s news is dominated by the much awaited birth of Prince George; Weedkiller’s Royal correspondent tells us that Auntie Pippa is already planning her Nephew’s first skiing lesson on the nursery slopes at Cloisters. royal babyThere will be a special section in Waitroses’ magazine on Royal baby food, and Pippa has promised that every child, born on the same day as the Prince, will receive a signed copy of her book, ‘Celebrate’. But hurry as there are only half a million copies left.

The Parwich photographers fraternity have gone into overdrive recently with some very impressive snaps. owlOur very own David G camped out for three nights, in a camouflaged hide, to bag a photo of an owl that was cleverly concealed in the foliage of a tree. Good show old boy.

A visit from a blue tit

As John FS’s reputation as the paparazzi of the ‘bird world’ grows, would-be celebrities are unabashed in their attempts to get in front of his camera. (I blame ‘Big Brother’ myself.)
